Mike Tomlin talks to Joe
Joe sure hopes Lovie Smith is like his old friend and colleague Mike Tomlin when it comes to quarterbacks.
Joe munched on scrambled eggs and fruit today with Tomlin at the NFL Owners meetings in Phoenix.
The phrase “franchise quarterback” got a rise out of Tomlin. He thinks the definition has taken on fuzzy-math status across the league.
“What is a franchise quarterback, you know? If you hear people talk, you’d think there’s 20, 25 of them in the NFL,” Tomlin said before busting into laughter. ‘And we all know there’s not. The bottom line is the quarterback position is an extremely important one, not only in football but in professional sports. If you got a good one, man, you got a horse in every race. And if you don’t you better be rock solid in all other areas. And that’s the reality of it.”
After that Tomlin rant, Joe followed up with asking Tomlin what he thought of Mike Glennon, a guy the Steelers prepared for and lost to last year.
“You know to be honest with you, I don’t have any detailed recollection of that,” Tomlin said of Glennon. “That’s a few games back. Obviously, he’s a solid young quarterback with a good skillset. Obviously, I don’t have any opinion on how they stack their depth chart.”
Well, it’s clear Tomlin doesn’t consider Glennon a franchise kind of guy. No surprise there. But what was a surprise is that Tomlin, a defensive-minded head coach, said he had no detailed recollection of Glennon, who threw for 302 yards and two touchdowns when the Bucs broke a decades long Steelers streak with a fourth-quarter, late-September comeback in Pittsburgh.
Really, Coach? They say the great coaches have short memories. So perhaps that’s the case here.

That’s my thoughts on Glennon too coach. Nothing to write home about. Serviceable, but not stellar starter material.

I would honestly be embarrassed to write that we should keep Glennon as our starter next year. Anyone that has watched him play over the last two years that comes up with the conclusion that he is a special Qb needs to be doing something else besides watching sports. Even the biggest Glennon jock sniffer wouldn’t put their job on the line for him, no matter what they say.

that’s going alittle far to even mention him as a potential franchise quarterback….he cant even get into the starting line up lol. A real comment from a real coach. translation he’s an average to below average quarterback. he’ll never be the reason you lose but never the reason why we win, if that’s your idea of a franchise quarterback then your probably the last of the dying breed called MGM

Most coaches don’t remember new backup QBs. Just give it a few years and glennon will be some teams attempt to get a veteran with a good track record as a back up. Then the fan base will get excited and pin the hopes of the season on glennons shoulders, he will give them about an 8-8 record and we will be laughing looking back on the days he wore a buc jersey.

His stats. He had no line… He didn’t need to pick up that first down he ran out of bounds for because we would’ve lost.
Look at his TD/INT ratio. He has less that Manning his rookie year.

Glennon is all we got now. That’s good enough for now. The fact that the team thinks highly of him still matters. I can’t wait to watch him play again.

Keep bashing Mike Glennon….he’s been nothing but a class act trooper for us. I agree that he’s not a franchise QB for us…(it takes a super-franchise QB) to win for us.
But…the time for Glennon bashing is over…either we will get a good pick for him 2-4th round or he will compete with our rookie for the starting job in Sept. At the very least he provides us with a decent, experienced inexpensive backup for the next 2 years….

That is Mike sticking up for his Buddy Lovie. He has a feeling Lovie is going with a qb and he is not going to give Glennon any love right now. How the hell can u not remember a qb who stole a game in your house 6 months ago that made u the laughing stock of the NFL for 1 week and had ur rabid fans calling for ur head.

An honest question for all. I agree totally with Tomlin that the term “franchise QB” has become pretty fuzzy and is certainly overused.
And so…was Brad Johnson a franchise QB?
Trent Dilfer?
Rich Gannon?
I’m just trying to get a feel for what folks mean when they say “franchise QB”.
IMO none of those three qualify under my definition. They all went to Super Bowls…two of them won! But I put them in the “you need to be rock solid everywhere else”. But your mileage may vary.
Special part b question for FSU fans. So which QB is better?

I would agree there are probably only maybe 6-7 Franchise QBs in the league. Most are just good game managers, but the rest are, eh.

I define a franchise QB as a guy that can take the team, put them on his back and will them to a W. The guy that can make everyone else on the team better, regardless of who is put around him.

Maybe Luck…might still be too early for that one.
Off top of my head, that’s all i can come up with. Those guys rarely, if ever, have a bad season and always seem to be in contention for a playoff spot.

Celly, I would add Big Ben to that list. As much as I dislike him he throws for a ton of yards and seems to win games when they should lose. I might also put Wilson on there as well. I didn’t have Rivers on mine just because he hasn’t really done much. Sure he wins 7-8 games a year, but that isn’t much is it? Otherwise we would have other QBs on there like Palmer or Dalton.

Perhaps I was a little rough on you there, so let me try to explain what is and isn’t tampering. Giving praise to another player is not tampering. Talking about the possibility of a player joining your team when they are under contract with another team is tampering. Having talks with another player trying to get him to join your team is tampering. It’s really a very simple concept.

And then if he was followed up and asked if Glennon could be a Franchise QB on his team and he said yes, do you not think that would be tampering in the same sense that the Jets supposedly did?

Matt Hasselbeck, Rob Johnson, Matt Flynn, Aaron Brooks, Kevin Kolb and many many others were backup QBs when their new teams offered big money deals or traded for their services. Coaches know about back up QBs and Tomlin knows enough about Glennon. It’s doubtful he’s impressed, but on the other hand, you can’t take anything that comes out of a coach’s mouth as the truth.

It is funny to me that only 6 or 7 names are mentioned as being “franchise”
QBs, and no one is willing to definitively include Andrew Luck or even Russell Wilson as that caliber of player, I presume since they have not performed at that level for enough years yet in their young careers. Yet, most of the posters here are already proclaiming Jameis Winston a lock-cinch “franchise”QB, even though he has yet to play a single down in the NFL. Does anyone see any IRONY in that statement. Sounds a lot like all of the talk last year about Johnny Football and “Pineapple” McCown. SMH!
It also sounds to me that Coach Tomlin gave a “solid” compliment to Mike Glennon, calling him ” a solid young quarterback with a good skillset”. And he obviously didn’t want to call out Lovie Smith for his judgement “on how they stack their depth chart”.
Anyhow, I got my season ticket renewal in the mail recently, and we’ll just see how it all plays out. BTW, there was a picture of L & L holding up a jersey with #1 on it……………………………. I couldn’t believe my eyes, but it had MY name on it! I know I was as surprised as you guys.

My definition of franchise QB means you feel that you can feel that QB can consistently lead your team to victory. I think there are more than 6 or 7. Wilson, Luck are ABSOLUTELY franchise QB’s to me. I would consider Matt Ryan and Cam Newton franchise QB’s. I feel Flacco, Ben, Rivers, and maybe even Kaepernick are franchise guys in my eyes. You don’t have to be elite to be franchise.
There is no lock Winston is going to be a franchise guy. I wish it were that simple. I do believe he is the best bet, which is all you can hope for. The draft is a crap shoot, no doubt about it. I would, however, put my money on Jameis being a franchise QB over you 🙂

I’m just about spent on this debating over whether Glennon has the ability to become the guy or not. Bottom line is come week 1, we will know what we have or didn’t have with him.

Neither is tampering. Now, if they had engaged in talks with Revis then yes that is tampering. Saying I would love to have him back in an interview is not tampering. You are right though, I don’t know why I even bother trying to help stupid people.

Glennon is 5 – 13 all the excuses and creative math will not change that. When td/int percentage becomes the goal of the game instead of winning then we will talk. Glennon is a no heart, mediocre back up who doesn’t make players around him better.
