Not only did the Bucs lose many millions on Ghost Johnson, the Bengals re-signed him and were awarded a pick for losing him.
Joe doesn’t know what to make of former defensive end Ghost Johnson. Oh, he had heart, that is for sure. Johnson was injured and still made it back onto the football field for the Bucs.
But that is how he earned his nickname. It was like the Bucs were playing with 10 defenders at times when Johnson started. The Bucs, in a moment of right-thinking, jettisoned Johnson earlier this month, who ran back to Cincinnati quicker than a gecko running from your footsteps.
Well, even with Johnson gone and millions lost, the Bucs are still haunted by Johnson.
The Bengals were awarded a third-round pick in compensation for losing Ghost a year ago to the Bucs. (Don’t worry. The pick doesn’t come from the Bucs’ stash). And the Bengals also were granted a fourth-round pick for the Bucs’ gift of Anthony Collins. (Bengals.com does a great job explaining the complicated system.)
That is just wrong and all but closes the book on a scary chapter of the Lovie Smith regime.

The draft picks are one thing but what bothers me most about pro contracts, at least if I understand them correctly, is that we are on the hook for the remainder of Johnson’s contract while he is free to double dip while getting another contract from the Bengals.
Perhaps an attorney here can explain or Joe can call the Dolman Law Group.
I understand it’s the way they’re written but why. We should be able to prevent Johnson from playing anywhere else unless another team paid us for his services.
I know you can restrain anybody from earning a living but the contract should be worded in a fashion that Johnson still has to show up and practice or workout at OBP. I suspect that the fly in the ointment is the CBA and NFL rules. If we kept Johnson and just let him sit around and do nothing it would suck up a roster spot.
If we’re paying him he should work for us whether he makes the roster or not.
Just doesn’t seem fair.

From what I understand it, the amount the Bengals pays him is deducted from what we pay him. Though I’m not entirely sure.

@BuccaneerBonzai, that is called ‘offsets’ in a contract. MJ did NOT have any offsets in his contract which means he can double dip. IF there are offsets in a contract, what you make with the next team is deducted from what the previous team owes you. If Team 1 owes you 5mil, and Team 2 signs you for 4mil, Team 1 still owes you 1mil….IF there is offset language. MJ had no such language.

not as bad as giving away a 1st and 4th plus 16 mil for a overpriced corner to rehab while only winning for games. if you had complained about that awful deal as much as last summer’s free agents that would be one thing but you actually just come across as salty and hateful and it’s childish unless you only root for the bucs just to complain.
has no bearing on what we do…you actually care that he went back to the bengals as sorry as he is? duh they got a pick for losing those two players and the bengals are probably the only team that wanted them after the seasons they had. bengals are a playoff team and where we are trying to go. so what…..to hell with the bengals, we’ll probably take years to retool our roster and become a playoff team then win one before they ever do. those two players aren’t going to change the fortune of them getting bounced out in the first round of playoffs every year and yea some may say you wish for that but you cried about it while dungy was here then cried about it before chucky eventually got fired too

i’m not mad. i just hope we can be the team in that situation one day. when you are winning fairly regularly as the bengals now are or the patriots have this entire century, people will overrate your role players and you get a chance to fleece the buccaneers of the league in trades or laugh while you double dip on a free agent who realizes he never should have left

How do you think Pittsburgh feels about the Patriots getting compensation for taking back LeGarrett Blount? It’s the same thing. If a starter doesn’t sign back with you, another team picks him up and he fails and ends up back on your roster. That means you get him back and get a compensatory pick in addition.
That’s the rules…..live by them.

That trade was fine. Elite, top 10 NFL talent isn’t cheap to acquire. Giving him away because the coach is so poor at adapting to talent he can’t fit in an elite player? Now that’s a pathetic move.

This deal looks much worse because 1) we only kept Revis for one year, that was not the strategy when the deal was made and 2) we used that $16mil last year and part of $16 mil for this year on these lousy non-football players that aren’t even able to play for a 2-14 football team after one year.

In Lovie’s defense they tried to keep Revis but wanted him to take a pay cut from the 16 mil a year salary. Once he refused to take a pay cut they attempted to trade him but he and his agent put a stop to that.

No defense will save Lovie, especially when Revis essentially just got $16 million a year guaranteed for 3 years from the Jets. It had nothing to do with the cap, look at how far under we are again this year and project to be next year. Lovie couldn’t make a guy you primarily use man to man work because he doesn’t believe in primarily man to man, Welcome to Lovieball.

Bucs got fleeced, with Licht supposedly having such great mentors in Philly and NE before he “earned” his first GM gig, I’m very disappointed in the monumental flop in FA last year. And now the salt……

Disgusting. I wish Lucht would’ve been smarter about the money he gave to Johnson. We should have paid him less and made him more of a rotational situation kind of guy and not our starting RDE which is at the 5 in Lovies defense wheras in Marvin Lewis’ defense he linrd up in the 4 which requires more strength and less speed and/or athleticism. Thats why playing him at RDE and thinking the transition would be flawless was a huge costly miscalculation. I just hope Licht abd his team learned from his rookie mistakes.

What is truly disgusting is DallasBucs continued obsession with excrement during his posts. This is why I think he suffered from some sort of trauma during potty training which probably happened much later in life than normal children which probably added to the trauma and embarrassment.
Really DallasBuc, if that is the most intelligent way you can express yourself, take your crayons and go back to the sandbox.

Lived in Texas for four years and there are only two places with more crazies than Florida and that is Texas and California coming in a distant second.
In fact there is only one thing Texas has more than crazies,and that is bullies.
It is a free country and you have your own misguided beliefs, no matter how wrong they are.
But as the old saying goes, you can have your own beliefs, but you can’t make up your own facts and spout them off as true.

I think given Lovies history, we will be more competetive in year two. Especisially with Koetter and hopefully Jameis. Im not going to say Lovie is garbage based on his first year. Of course he needs to be held accountable for the 2-14 record but im sure the Glazers hold him very accountable. Perhaps going 2-14 was a necesarry evil to really improve long term. He should’ve been smarter in how he used MJohnson and ACollins but with the money Licht paid them he probably had no choice but to play them as “franchsise” players instead of situational guys.
His biggest evil, in my opinion, was bringing in Mccown to be our starting QB. With the money we paid him compared to Glennon Lovie pretty much had to stick with Mccown and live and(in Lovies case)die with Mccown as our starter. Never shoulf have happened. Biggest Mistake the Bucs have made the past five years. So now Lovie has to live with that 2-14 record because je wanted Mccown. Licht signed him and did all the technical contract stuff but that was Lovies idea and boy did he pay the piper for that one.
But I will give Lovie a chance to improve this team long term and back him up, which is something I never could have done foe Schiano after his 4-12 soap opera. Schiano didnt have the resume to lead me to believe he could turn it around. Lovie does.
BTW ive been to FL, TX and CA and Cali has, by far, the most crazies 🙂

Name one fact you have rankled me with that has trumped my “misguided beliefs”?
I love all 3 states and spend most of my time between them. Not sure from where you get your notion of what states crazies come from but it is clearly anecdotal and you certainly haven’t visited the rest of this country or watched the news lately on what is going on in the rest of this world.
The only bullying going on here is you trying to bully me with the way you regularly come after me personally, which of course now also makes you a hypocrite. This a sports site, not a political one. I expect your certain brand of behavior over there, not here.
