Picking Flowers

There’s a new draft guru in town, and he played years for the Buccaneers.
When pressed for a Tampa Bay second-round pick on the offensive line, this guy moved his chips all in for Ereck Flowers, the gargantuan out of Miami.
Joe’s talking about former Bucs tight end Anthony Becht, who trains draft prospects at IMG Academy in Bradenton, in addition to his ESPN college football duties and chattering on the Buccaneers Radio Network.
The superior WDAE-AM 620 audio below is Becht going very deep on various draft prospects who could save the Bucs’ offensive line. Becht isn’t blown away by any of the names in this deep draft for O-linemen. He only grades Iowa lineman Brandon Scherff as a first-round talent, but Becht claims Scherff looks like a better guard.
But when asked to get off the fence on the rest of the potential tackles, Becht picked Flowers, who he called a “nasty finisher.” Though Becht said Flowers has sloppy feet.
“If he just works on his craft a little more, all that strength and talent and athleticism, it could be a scary type of player for you, if he can get coached up,” Becht said. “That’s the biggest things. All these guys are going to have to taught and coached up and just cleaned up.”
Becht went on to rave about Flowers’ raw athleticism and said he has the most upside of all the guys the Bucs might find in the second round.
Those who watched the combine saw Flowers perform feats of strength with his 6-6, 329-pound frame.

I’d hate to see us trade away future draft picks to move back up in the first round to draft a mediocre o lineman simply because we’re desperate.
If a decent OL slips to us in the second round, great…but don’t reach for a guy out of desperation

I agree with you, only to an extent.
You also have to look at it as a smart business decision.
If there is a guy you like, and you see him starting to slip do you
A) wait for him to hopefully make it to your pick in the 2nd round where you’ll only get him on a 4 year contract
or
B) trade away a 6th or 7th round pick to move up a couple slots and take him in the 1st where you get the opportunity to get him on a 5 year contract instead?

I dont think he’ll fall to the 2nd round, maybe near the bottom of the first. Thats why I havent even brought up his name.

Chris Landry just suggested the Bucs should pursue Eric Kendricks MLB in the draft.

Only O lineman I really know is Scherff. Would love the bucs to draft him but he’ll be gone early. With this guy Flower’s size alone I doubt he’ll even be there in the second, but one never knows.
also imo Eric Kendricks is overrated. Watched a few UCLA games this year and didnt not hear his name called once, not once. He disappears way to often to warrant such a high selection and the plays that he did make had more to do with being in the right place at the right time. You got the right team Bonzai, wrong player. Take a look at Myles Jack, I think we would be a much better fit if he’s eligible. either way we NEED either an o lineman or d lineman with that second pick.

I’d trade Glennon and #34 to move up for Flowers. Fisher would be a good pick, but he’s a RT. He is no Flowers, though. Flowers has the potential to be a franchise LT. Peat is the only other guy that really could do that this draft. Almost all the other tackles are RTs. I could live with Dotson at LT, but I’d rather put him at RT where he’s done well. Then put a young guy like Flowers in at RT. Draft a center in the 3rd, move EDS to RG. Suddenly the line looks a LOT better.

You realize Glennon+2nd can only move you from maybe 34-30. Maybe. Probably still no. This guy is going to be gone by 25 at the latest in most experts eyes, with several having him in the top 20. Moving back into the first round to 17-20 will cost a 2nd and probably another 2nd and a 5th.

@meh, Ali Marpet could probably play center too…..I want that guy, especially if we can get him in the 4th, he’s worth a our 3rd though IMO since we’re dropping so far out of the 4th.

You’ve HEARD of one freaking lineman… you think Kendricks, probably the best collegiate MLB since Kuechly came out is overrated, and you don’t even know if Myles Jack is eligible, he isn’t, but you’d take him, even though Kendricks is clearly better because you heard his name more. Newsflash, ESPN LOVES Myles Jack because he plays both ways on occasion… he’s decent, but clearly not in Kendricks’ class. BTW, Scherff is being projected by most as a OG.

No, you hope they would trade for Glennon and 34. Glennon essentially equates to a 2nd round pick here, which is utterly absurd. Dare to dream, but you’re gonna find that just because the Bucs are horribly managed and run doesn’t mean other teams are. Arizona is well run, and that would be a terrible trade for them. Not happening.

Sadly, Flowers most likely will be gone by pick #34…But with that said we can still get a really good O-lineman with that pick without reaching for someone in particular (due to a deep OL class)…Personally, I’m hoping we can find a way to trade back up into the 3rd rd and snag an edge-rusher before they’re all gone…for instance…

Why not trade a fifth rd pick for a proven guard or tackle. If someone like brandon Marshall and countless others go for late round picks why don’t we make a deal that is similar. We could only pray to get a starter in one of those late rounds, so why not trade a late pick to get a starter for sure

We’ve had so many guys pass through here with “great athleticism”, and the bottom line is by the time they reach the pros, they can’t be “coached up” any higher it would seem.
Give me a guy with average athleticism, who doesn’t need to be coached up.

Would we really want to turn Warhop loose on this guy? I mean, I get that anyone that we don’t get in the first round is going to come in and need to be coached but if he’s “sloppy” and needs to be “cleaned up”, I haven’t seen Warhop do that for anyone yet. I’d say that pick should be used on a DE, if one is around that warrants the pick.

Hey Skyline, if we get Mariota our Offense will have run option plays and Glennon is inept in that type Offense and they will have to trade him. Then you get Tebo to start until the OL gels since Tebo can get yardage carrying defenders with him if the OL aren’t getting holes early in the season. If you don’t think Mariota is the pick, you didn’t notice our lack of interest in Dallas acquiring the bad boy DE who used to be a star with Charlotte!
