Bucs Looking To Wash Hands Of Martin?

Since his Pro Bowl, rookie season of 2012, Doug Martin just hasn’t been the same. Injuries have something to do with that.
Martin lost a good chunk of 2013 with a shoulder injury and, after getting off to a terrible start, Martin admitted to Joe after the final game that he was injured early in the year, which affected his rushing prowess.
Perhaps because of this, from the Twitterings of the “Custodian of Canton,” eye-RAH! Kaufman of The Tampa Tribune, don’t bet Martin is wearing a Bucs uniform when the regular season kicks off less than six months from now.
The Bucs have more housecleaning to do before the start of training camp. Keep your eye on Dashon Goldson, Mike Glennon and Doug Martin

“Housecleaning?” Pretty strong word.
Running backs — with few exceptions (and Joe knows his readers will be quick to offer exceptions) have short shelf lives. They get the hell beat out of them too much. It’s a sad fact of NFL football in the 21st Century.
Martin may be feeling the wear and tear already. This is yet another example of why no general manager should ever draft a running back in the first round. It’s simply a bad investment, unless you are one running back from making a Super Bowl bid.

if the Bucs do trade Martin for a low round draft pick, That mean that GMC would be the only one left out of the 6 1st round draft picks that the Pop-star made.

The Bucs need a powerback or they need Sims to channel his inner Adrien Peterson. They shoul however trade Martin and a few others.

I remember saying right after we drafted Sims that it was the beginning of the end for Doug Martin. He just seemed lost last year and it looks like the organization is trying to phase him out. Sucks but I also dont think we will be on the team once the season starts. I mentioned in a previous post that this years RB class is the best I’ve seen in years. Almost reminds me of last years WR class. I would be thrilled if we drafted David Cobb in the 4th round if he’s still there, he basically carried the Golden Gophers entire offense.
BTW, its looks like there’s not only going to one RB taking in the first round this year but two, Joe. Gurley and Gordon.

If the Bucs draft another RB this year, they should have Lovie and Licht fired on the spot. Pissing away that 3rd rounder last year on Sims who clearly isn’t better than Martin (or Rainey for that matter) was bad enough, burning another pick on another RB a year later would be laughably bad. Especially since they probably would pick a RB before a single lineman.

Can’t use him properly if he can’t make someone miss. I only remember a couple of runs where he made a good move in the hole to get out in the open. There is almost always 1 defender unaccounted for in the hole and its his job to make that guy miss. Martin has not been up to the task for some time. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Rainey is the best back on this team and that includes James and Sims.

With the way this off season is going the Bucs D and special teams will have to be outstanding. The O will have to have a passing game that uses every part of the field to help the running game.

now I think glennon is the worst quarterback to start since josh Johnson but that’s not reality. I make fun of napoleon dynamite but seriously you use glennon and house cleaning in the same sentence? and your replacing doug martin with who? so that would mean the bucs are dumb enough to replace those two guys for the unknown in Charles sims and a rookie quarterback, glennon gets paid like a 5th round pick and your doing housecleaning? i’ll be so glad when sports writers offseason is over because the rumor mill news is getting really old

Like I said earlier today, more holes than draft picks. Sure every team has holes but for the Bucs we quite litterally have NOBODY at certain spots and not enough draft picks (excluding rounds 5-7).
If we can draft Martin as part of a nice package to get another third rounder, second rounder etc. Then im all for it. Trade Martin, Glennon, And a fourth for a third. Thats just one example and the combinations are endless.
BTW Matt Schaub is available. If people wanted Brian Hoyer to mentor Jameis then Matt Schaub would be twice the mentor.

Martin will be very productive behind a decent OLine as long as he stays healthy. Trading him for a 5th round pick or whatever doesn’t help the team this year as much as Martin can. Duh.
I seriously doubt he will be traded.
Trading away 1st round picks for a bag of peanuts or just releasing them after 4 years has gotten to be standard procedure around here. Stop the madness.

It’s thesilly season. Martin will be on the team. He played well the last two or three games when over his injuries. And you guys who want to take one year of a guy’s play such as Sims and genralize to his whole career are ridiculous. Sims was hurt in training camp and not utilized properly by the oc.

All you guys calling Lovie a liar should use it on the Rams Jeff Fisher. Up until a couple of weeks before he traded his QB away for Foles, he was “his” QB for 2015.
Jerry Jones is a liar, big surprise, because he told Demarcus Murray and the fans he didn’t have the cap space to sign him and then turned right around and signed Greg Hardy for twice the amount.

Martin had good games agaisnt NO and CAR late in the season. Bucs should keep him atleast one more year. See how he does this season, if he can become his 2012 self the Bucs can excercise the 1 year option they allow for 1st rounders. No reason to cut him without getting any good value in return. I think it would be a big mistake to not let him compete for the bucs starting position this year. If he can’t beat out Rainey Sims James or whoever else brought in, just don’t use the extra one-year option on his contract. Simple.

I think they’d be stupid at this point to cut Dashon Goldson without a replacement. I realize how much salary it would save, but who would we spend it on anyway? There is no one left!
And cutting him would only create another need this year. At this point, I think it’s better to wait a year, unless a veteran worth getting becomes available without losing a pick.

So far as Martin, I think they’d be wise to offer a trade, even up, for Adrian Peterson. Vikings would get out of his salary that way…and I still think Martin can be good behind a good offensive line.
Otherwise, I say keep him.

How extensive were Martin’s injuries and how much are they completely healed? Somebody knows, I guess they are’nt telling. If he is at or near 100%, he is worth keeping. Fixing that woeful O line should do wonders for some of these questionable players everybody and their brother wants to trade away.

Lets evaluate the stupidity of everything that is Tampa Bay, the fans, the media (yes you too Joe) and most importantly the franchise:
1. Joe constantly preaches patience “the right pieces will come in the draft” gosh I sure hope that 5th round pick we got for Zuttah is worth it from the Crows….cause Zuttah would have been our best O-Linemen last year.
2. Mark Barron is a bust!! He’s no John Lynch! He can’t cover a granny with a walker! All he does is hit hard and his angles suck! He is a bad fit for Lovies system!

But oh no Joe in ALL his wisdom sees the Bucs answer through the DRAFT because the Bucs have been such rockstars with DE’s over the last decade
4. Now you idiot of a fanbase wants to trade Doug Martin for a fifth round pick? Why? When has a fifth round pick ever paid off for Tampa? Since when has the franchise ever given us faith that they know what they’re doing with scouting and drafting? Martin is a proven commodity and yes, will probably never replicate his rookie season again. But RB is probably the one area of the team that doesn’t need fixing.
This isn’t Madden idiots stop trying to encourage this franchise to run it as such.

We have no idea how martin, sims, rainey or james will di in Dirk’s offense. i wouldn’t get rid of him just yet unless a trade comes along that is to good to pass up. He is still on his 1st contract so the cap hit is not to bad.

Hey Buc Realist. Do a little homework before you knock Dominik, even though that’s all you are good for on here. Dominik drafted five not six first rounders.
Freeman: failed himself but basically before he exploded off the field he held all Buc QB records
GMC: stud
Clayborn: can’t help injuries but he was a physical player is he stays heathy in Atlanta be curious to see his numbers
Barron: nfl sack leader this year from safety position. All sacks when he went to a coach who knew how to use him
Martin: injuries. I don’t know what happened as well. He earned that pro bowl first year.
Doubt the colts have many of polians first round picks anymore either and he’s going to canton.
The Bucs simply have had too much turnover for any of these players

Finally, RB’s do get the hell beat out of them but Martin hardly qualifies.
He was out for a good portion of the second season and was used sparingly in the last. In fact, like you said Joe, in I his last couple of games he came on strong so. I doubt if he qualified for a beat up back.
This whole story is so wrong and speculative it shouldn’t even had been posted.

Mark Barron is a bust. Sounds like Rams basically only going to get somethiing out of him as a rotational role player. The dude was supposed to be a perenial pro bowl safety; and is nothing close to it.
But hater-driven fans like to think the Rams are some amazing franchise compared to the Bucs. Comon guys.
I think we need to keep Martin unless we are getting a 3rd or better. His problems seemed to be his timing and vision. In 2012 he could make guys miss and get 3-4 yards when it looked like he’d be stopped for a loss; and if there was even a small hole he’d burst through it. NOt sure wtf happened but physically i think he’s still capable if he can just get his feel for the game back.

2. Mark Barron is a bust. Being a role playing part time player is a bust result for a #7 overall pick who was supposed to be a perenial pro bowl safety and the top safety taken in that draft. I don’t care if he is getting sacks as a gadget player you can find specialty players late in the draft.
3. You are really upset over George Selvie lol? We already have a bunch of younger / higher upside George Selives on the team. Calm down on that. We can go sign a George Selvie equivalent later if we really want.
4. Not a SINGLE PERSON in this article / comment section is suggesting we trade Martin for a 5th round pick. Closest thing is someone saying Martin & a 5th for AP. George Selvie was cut by the Bucs a few years back and nobody cried then… he isn’t much better now… he wasn’t good enough for Schiano…of course neither was Michael Bennett… or Chris Jones or Wallace Gilberry and whomever the other guy from two years ago that would have teamed with the other three and topped the Bucs totals in sacks.

Simms looked really really good in the final game against the saints. I know…..the saints defense was horrible, but the quickness of his feet, his shiftiness, his vision…..it was all a positive sight. He looked good. Id like to see him put on a few pounds but with him being a dual threat Martin should be moved back on the depth chart or traded if they can fetch anything for him. I’d prefer Simms as our primary and Mike James as our third down back as he get’s more yards after contact and a downhill runner.

1. Yes, of course Joe (and the majority of the fanbase) recognized signing Hardy would be nice. But then justified it with the need possibly being filled through the “deepest end class in recent memory” I’m saying (as I will continue in my points) The Bucs and fanbase are clueless based on drafting history.
2. Of COURSE Barron is a bust, proving again Tampa’s scouting ineptitude. HOWEVER he is equally as good if not better than any other safety on the roster now and the 4th and 6th rounders we got for him will almost assuredly amount to nothing. Much like if we traded Martin for a low-round draft pick. I used the 5th rounder as an example not based on anything people have actually suggested. Trading Martin merely creates another hole for no return. And I openly laugh at the idea of trading Martin and any combination of picks for AP.
3. Am I saying George Selvie is a savior of the franchise? Not at all. Not by a long-shot. He’s probably just camp meat. But 10 sacks over 2 years is more than Clayborn or Bowers or Johnson contributed. What’s 1.5 mil when we blow 30mil on the likes of McCown, Johnson and Collins?
4. Hardly crying, and I know for a fact that this is “keyboard tough guy” talk so please forgive me when I say that I believe with 100% certainty I could run a better scouting department/general manager than the Bucs have over the last 10 years. I truly genuinely believe that.
The results speak for themselves and until there is a deviation from 13 years of being a laughable franchise I will question (read: not criticize) their every move

I too believe we give Martin one more year to prove it. He is still the best back. Im sure he will tell you injuries had something to do with it. At least if he had a bad year, the whole team had a bad year with Evans being the exception. Why not rest the Muscle Hamster for a some time since backs only have about 4 years. Hopefully he rested a bit and can can contribute in a BIG way the next 2 years.

I didn’t have time to read through the comments above so if this was mentioned I apologize but anyone notice how since Gruden left each of the three new HCs decided to purge the roster of valuable football players for whatever various reason? Think about some of the players including now HOFers, SB winners and just good solid football players sent packing after the new coach got the job. Some maybe justified. Some maybe for example. Some just out of pure ego…I didn’t draft him, not my guy.
My point being that just because they have the title of HC or lapdog GM doesn’t mean the necessarily know what they are doing. It is often falsely assumed. I used to do that myself until I saw what the last 10 years has brought.

We had a terrible o line last year. You can’t say the running game struggles were Martin’s fault. that o line was garbage. I don’t see any reason to cut Martin before camp. And I doubt we get anything better than a 6th rd pick, which makes it a stupid move.
