Jameis Watch: Passing On Draft Night
March 16th, 2015
Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, former national champion Jameis Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon.
It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback ever to wear No. 5 in the state of Florida.
As of now, Jameis Winston plans to spend draft night at home with family and not attend the NFL’s giant draft spectacle with Roger Goodell in Chicago, per esteemed NFL writer Peter King of Sports Illustrated and TheMMQB.com.
Winston might change his mind, but nobody can make him. Until he’s drafted, he’s not property of anyone except Jameis Winston.
Joe knows some fans will blast Winston for this, but Joe can’t go there. Draft night might be the last time Winston is free of NFL rules and media demands. Once you’re an NFL quarterback, you’ve got all kinds of mandatory media obligations. Why not chill on the couch with dad and loved ones?
Besides, if Winston is with family and friends in Alabama or Tallahassee, that’s a much shorter trip for him to be at his new Tampa home the following morning.

This is an extremely smart move and those that are blasting him for it, especially the “he thinks he’s too good for the draft” are either trolls, morons, or haters. WHAT DOES HE GAIN BY ATTENDING?? Nothing.
If the Bucs bungle the pick and go Mariota (God help us) then the entire night will be about how the team was scared of his (non existent–media trumped up) record. And if he is the pick he’ll get interview after interview about whether he was surprised the Bucs picked him in spite of his (non-existent media trumped up) record.
Might as well stay home with his family. Truthfully, I’m surprised more players aren’t picking this option as the Draft green room has become nothing but a cheap excuse for gotcha journalism “now, let’s return to the green room where we can watch this 21 year old kid sweat as he gets passed by teams time and time again.”

Amazed at some of the hate thrown back and forth from the Winston and Anti-Winston Crew. Notice I didn’t say Pro-mariota, because there is a huge difference. It reminds me of the Payton Manning Draft quote from the colts on why they chose manning. The people who liked manning liked both QBs, the people who liked Ryan Leaf seemed to dislike Manning. I want Mariota to succeed, it would be great for the NFL and for College football. To see a guy come out of that Oregon Ducks’ offense and succeed in the NFL would shut down a lot of the pre-conceived doubt. That’s why I feel it would be best for Mariota’s career for him to fall to a team that is not QB desperate at the moment.
Yes, I would like Winston to be the Bucs QB, but I also think Mariota will be good eventually. No matter how much I spout off reasons why the Bucs should/should not draft a specific QB, it doesn’t make any difference to the front office. Truth be told, I am a born and raised FSU fan (UCF Alum) but I was a huge proponent of Tim Tebow and still am. Thought the guy was a winner. If a QB is a winner I am not too proud to say so. Tebow was a winner, a leader, and quite possibly the best damn college football player I have ever seen or will ever see in my lifetime. Mariota is also winner. Winston is a winner. I am certain that the Bucs will make the best decision for the current regime, hopefully it turns out to be the best decision for one of these young quality QBs.
I believe that Winston’s advisors may have played a part in his choice to forego attendance at the draft. Perhaps it would have shown teams that he is not about the glitz, glamor, and camera time associated with the pageantry of the draft. Unfortunately, no matter what the guy does he will inevitably get blasted. Make no mistake, if he follows through with this plan, there will be no room in his neighborhood for the amount of media that will be present at his house.
Tebow also chose to enjoy the draft from the “privacy” and comfort of his own home, around his family and friends. Although, he wasn’t slated to be picked early.
Go BUCS! Lets get back to winning!

mikeh…has 4 BK uniforms with matching pants and a little name tag. One of the shirts has a grease stain on it from working the fry machine for a month before he was promoted to bun toaster.

The Bucs may be leaning in one direction, but they probably have not completely decided yet. They know this pick will make or break the franchise for the next 5-10 years, so they want to get it right.
So they are taking their time, looking over the choices carefully.
Imagine if they surprised everyone and took one of the other QBs instead, believing one of them were the best one in the draft? Probably won’t happen, but you never know.

I think the NFL politely told him it would be a good idea not to attend and to stay home. There are only so many things you can say about Winston without bringing up the elephant in the room. When a team has the #1 pick, having their name called, going up on stage with the player…that is something every team in that position values. It’s huge advertizing.
Throughout the year, the “With the number one pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select…” video and images of them posing with the player and jersey would be used countless times on ESPN and NFLN. Just like the pick last year,
If he is to be the Buccaneers pick, they will tell him to be there. And if he isn’t, it shows selfishness and they will not pick him. Period.

Most of you homers here said Winston wouldn’t throw at the combine and guess what – you were wrong.
Winston has NOTHING to gain by going to the live draft – NOTHING! If he went there could be all types of women’s groups protesting as well as reporters asking questions that frankly should be left alone. He was cleared and it’s time to start fresh and clean.
Will going to NY improve his draft status? Will going get him more money? No & no, so why go?

It appears many of you have no idea of what this guy has been through over the past two years. I’m on record as saying I don’t believe her story, but regardless, he made an error in judgement that brought an immense amount of scrutiny for a college student. I am sure this is not how he envisioned his college career would go. When he left the Title 9 hearing he looked like he had been thru 12 with Tyson.
I would imagine this whole thing has been humbling and he wants to hang out with the people that stood with him throughout. Seems reasonable to me. It shows me at he’s possibly over the hype and better understands what might be most important.
