Let Da’Quan Bowers Walk

Joe was stunned yesterday when he learned, by way of Houston sports radio yakker Jayson Braddock, that the Texans were trying to lure Bucs free agent defensive end Da’Quan Bowers, but the Bucs were trying to keep him.

(Joe communicated with someone he trusts last night and was told that, well, this rumor from Braddock has some holes in it.)

Joe knows Bucs fans are just fed up waiting for Bowers to do anything. So too, is Andrew Astleford of Fox Sports Florida, who believes the Bucs should just hand Bowers his parting gifts and wave goodbye.

Reason to let walk: This should be a no-brainer. With Jacquies Smith’s discovery at defensive end, and with plenty of depth at defensive tackle, Bowers is expendable. He was a bubble player to make the roster at the end of last preseason. This year, it’s time to part ways.

Prediction: Bowers never lived up to his potential with the Bucs. Perhaps he’ll revive his career elsewhere, but it’s best if both parties move on.

Joe would be slightly surprised if Bowers is brought back, even at a league minimum. It was telling prior to the Week 16 Packers game in December, when Bucs defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier said he thought Bowers was just beginning to understand how important conditioning is.

Wait a minute: Bowers had been in the NFL for four years and was on his third coaching staff, and he finally was beginning to figure out he needed to be in shape to play well? In Week 16?

That right there would have been enough for Joe to give Bowers his pink slip.

Should have been gone years ago.m

  2. Brandon Says:

What? DaQuan Bowers plays for the Bucs?

  3. Harry Says:

What a waste. I was so excited when we “stole” him in the draft. Dom knows knees!

  4. FortMyersDave Says:

How true Harry! Its best for the Bucs to let this guy go on to Houston as he is simply a bust who the Bucs wasted a 2nd rounder on and is now only a reminder of how bad Dom set back this franchise with so many asinine picks. I hope he does succeed for the texans but his time with the Bucs has to end…

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

But he’s got so much talent….what an upside….such a ceiling….if he only had more time…perhaps 15 years….then he would be great!!!

  6. The Buc Realist Says:

I am always amazed that Bowers catches all the flack ( very deservedly so ) when there is a first rounder that flamed out as well, But most want to resign adrian slowborn! who greatest accompplishment is late hitting Drew Brees and Tom Brady during a scrimmage!

  7. ddneast Says:

Big difference between Clayborn and Bowers is heart, hustle and production Buc Realist.
No one has ever said Clayborn was out of shape either.
Clayborn had 7.5 sacks is rookie season and was injured at the beginning of his second year.
He was then moved to LDE where he was also put in pass coverage by the genius known as Schiano.
Think that’s easy. Try throwing with your right arm all your life now start throwing with your left. Same thing.
    Do you understand now?

  8. MTM Says:

Bowers should have already been let go and he is just holding a spot that could filled with someone who gets it. The minute he was drafted he quit working hard.

  9. The Buc Realist Says:

    @ddneast

Clayborn has 1 move that worked his rookie year. 3 4 step bull rush then he would shove the tackle, he was exposed thru film and his second year blew out his knee.

Now he lost power to do his 1 move. Also It was Lovie who demoted him to LDE after he watched AC game film.

Schiano was correct in having AC drop in zone while blitzing LVD and other LB why do you think Coach Schiano had the better defense than lovie???

  10. Bawlmerbucfan Says:

With our luck, he’s heading to another team (presumably Houston). While playing alongside JJ Watt, he’s then going to turn into the second coming of Bruce Smith. Curt, Howie, Terry, and Jerry will then say we didn’t know how to use his talents.

  11. mac Says:

Let Bowers walk because he is probably too injured and out of shape to run…

  12. Matt Says:

He’s better suited as a 5 technique in a 3-4 where explosiveness isnt as important and he can eat all the donuts and fries he wants and bulk up.

who comes to camp either injured or out of shape every year even in a year we change coaches and could be out on the streets. No it’s simple the difference between the two is production. Atleast i can say Clayborn never got replaced by a no name guy like Daniel Te’o-Nesheim

A guy that gets his knee scoped and drained every off-season. And what production from clayborn??? some sacks 4 seasons ago?? I don’t think he can rush the passer from anyside anymore. and the last 3 season back it up!!!

  15. wc3310 Says:

Dump bowers keep Aj clay… play him same role as bowers Clayborn more effective around 275lb last year played too light could rebound backing up mccoy inside. Always bives max effort a guy id want next to me at the right price ofcourse

  16. The Real Malloy Says:

Clayborn will never back up McCoy inside. He doesnt have the size. The only reason Bowers kind of worked is because he gets fat and is much closer to 290 during the season, even more.

And who gave the name Cheese Burger Bowers? Favorite Buccaneer nick name…and I don’t believe it was the Joe’s..but I could be wrong.

  17. MGM4Life Says:

I saw Bowers last season on the bench eating chicken nuggets like most people eat popcorn. Out of shape slob

  18. Capt.Tim Says:

Remember when dim drafted McCoy,Price,Bowers and Clayborn. Said we’d have our line for the next 10 years.
Pathetic how bad that guy was, and how much he set this team back.

  19. Danati74 Says:

    Long live the Dom!
