Anthony Becht: Schedule Guards & Centers Visits

March 5th, 2015

Evan Dietrich-Smith might not like what was on radio today

As an NFL tight end for 12+ years, Anthony Becht knows offensive line play.

Becht was brought in for a free agency chat on WDAE-AM 620 this morning and had strong feelings about the Bucs’ needed upgrades.

Becht, who serves on the Buccaneers Radio Network and breaks down film on Buccaneers.com, was banging the drum for 49ers free agent guard Mike Iupati. He was clear that the Bucs should at least court him. Becht said the Bucs should be preparing out of the gate to set up visits with guards and centers.

(Beware, Mr. Dietrich-Smith.)

Becht gave a bit of a thumbs down on free agent guard Todd Herremans, the former Eagles veteran. And he said the Bucs should be leaning toward drafting an offensive lineman on Day 2 of the draft, if not trading back into the first round to grab an O-lineman.

On the defensive side of the ball, Becht likes likely free agent safety Devin McCourty of New England.

There’s more in the audio below. Enjoy.

    Tkras is a g.

  2. Mumbles Says:

Cameron Erving in the 2nd round of Stefen Wisniewski in FA!

  3. Jeagan1999 Says:

Amen. Our O-line is a hot mess! The biggest things holding the Bucs back last year were McCown (now gone ), lack of pass rush (still a work in progress) and our pitiful offensive line. If we don’t fix the QB pressure and the O-line, we are looking at a 4-6 win season at best!

  4. The Real Malloy Says:

I think EDS playing next to Mankins will be much improved this season. If we can get above average play from RG and RT (assuming john coffee switches to the left)…i think our line can be top half of the league.

  5. bucco brice Says:

Iupati and McCourty would be a signing bonanza! 2 best free agent fits for the Bucs…

  6. robert 9 Says:

I find it crazy we are talking about taking O linemen late in the draft again this year, when last years guys are a disaster.

I know, I know, they can be gotten in late rounds and work out, but obviously our scouting sucked, and if they do the same again….well hopefully they did their homework.

as public enemy says, can’t truss it will work out though

  7. BP52 Says:

If the Bucs really do make the huge mistake of drafting JaMarcus (The Hunting Ground) Winston they should just hire the Tallahassee Police Department to play all of the offensive line positions as they have shown that they can protect him better than anyone else can

  8. robert 9 Says:

so, real….you think a guy like mankins in the last year of his craft is going to magically give it 120% for a bottom dweller team.

I beg to differ. he’ll be googling BBQ recipies in the film room at OBP

  9. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

Mr. Patrick still full of it.

this is a bell curve demonstration of a persons career. it shows how people decline quickly on the back end. we chould be signing guys in the mid point 25-27,28 years old.

  11. The Real Malloy Says:

    BOB9,

Yes, I do. Mankins is a stand up guy and a team leader. The Barbecue Master (after a full offseason here) will make the guys around him better…

    You’ll be eating crow…

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Logan Mankins is just fine….EDS will improve….we need to leave Dotson at RT….and pick up a LT & RG……draft or FA.
We will then have some depth & a better starting Oline.

I am optimistic we will fix these problems.

Dude, day 2 in the draft doesn’t mean late in the draft. Day one is the 1st round only, remember? Day 2 starts with the second round.

  14. robert 9 Says:

We need a stud LT to defend out QB

also a starting caliber LG if Mankins gets hurt or pulls another disappearing act

    Starter at RG

Potentially a Center, I would lean towards a starting caliber guy that can back up EDS if he decides to go bowling again

So we need a stud T, definitely a high caliber RG and two starting caliber guys at LG and C with upside.

and their gonna wait until late in the draft.

this QB is gonna get has a$$ killed!

  15. robert 9 Says:

yeah, but adamant their talking LB in the 2nd round.

  16. adamant Says:

It’s all talk at this time. Who is saying they are going to take a LB? Lovie? Jason? No. I’m quite certain the Bucs know where their greatest weaknesses are and will do what they can to address them via Free Agency and the draft.

  17. The Real Malloy Says:

if the right LB is there, they’ll take him in the 2nd…otherwise, I guarantee the 2nd rd pick is a G or T….probably a G

  18. robert 9 Says:

meh, I look at lovies history and what he did last year and i am sceptical

  19. adamant Says:

I can’t argue with Lovie’s history with O-line. But, I know overall he has a winning record, players respect him and it looks like he brought in a high quality offensive coordinator who should have significant input into who they draft and/or pick up in free agency.
