Glory Days Bucs Tackle Shoots Down Suh

Joe is flabbergasted by the drum pounding for Ndamukong Suh by some Bucs fans, and it’s mind-numbing that some local media types think Suh in Tampa might actually happen.
It’s about as likely as Team Glazer hosting a clothing optional Town Hall meeting on Clearwater Beach and insisting on questions about Manchester United.
But hey, don’t trust Joe. Take the word of a guy knows defensive tackle play in the Lovie Smith’s old school Tampa-2 defense. That would be Booger McFarland, who wears a Super Bowl ring after playing defensive tackle alongside Warren Sapp.
McFarland, who keeps busy on the SEC Network and as a host on SiriusXM NFL Radio, took to Twitter today to deflate the hopes of the Suh crowd.

Joe’s glad Booger commented on the Xs and Os side of the Suh argument. It’s a nice complement to the fact that signing Suh, who likely is looking at $20 million a season, makes zero sense. You can’t tie up that much cash at defensive tackle.
You want the Bucs to address the defensive line with Team Glazer’s wallet? The dump Michael Johnson and get some edge-rush talent in the house.

Move McCoy to the A and let Suh wreak havoc in the B. Problem solved. McCoy himself said Suh was the better player.

All I know is that the front 4 in this defense is required to get constant pressure on the QB to be successful. If Suh does one thing great, it’s apply pressure! McCoy is the team leader and his role cannot change…. But any talk about help on the front 4 applying pressure is talk ill at least consider!

I can’t understand anyone wanting this turd. This guy has on the field character issues. Here are some stats from ESPN:
lost $420,669 due to fines and suspensions. In 2010, he was fined $7,500 for roughing Jake Delhomme and $15,000 for unnecessary roughness on Jay Cutler. In 2011, he was fined $20,000 for roughing Andy Dalton, and in 2012 he was fined $30,000 for kicking Matt Schaub in the groin. In 2013, he was fined $31,500 for roughing Brandon Weeden, but that fine was later rescinded.
He is a cheating magot. No need to bring this guy near here!

And……we only save $2m by cutting Johnson….I don’t understand why Joe keeps wanting to dump him….we don’t save enough to make a difference…better off keeping him in hopes he will improve….or at the least, provide depth.

Yep not happening. It would cosume most of the available cap space and we have plenty of other positions that need to be addressed. Plus, McDonald is a very good player himself and far cheaper. Quit dreaming people, this isn’t MLB or fantasy football.

I would love for Suh to come to the Bucs because they need a little more players with a little edge to them. I know there is no way the Glazers would actually pay what it would cost to sign Suh but it’s nice to dream once in a while. As for his previous incidents on the field I couldn’t care less to be honest. All I need Suh to do is to stop the run and pressure the quarterback that is his job not to set a good example for little kids that would be their parents’ job.

Everyone likes to forget that it was Darby, not Booger, that played along Sapp most of our championship year. That’s not a knock on Booger, he was just injured.
I sure do miss the days when he had the best radio show in the afternoons.

Booger’s right…Suh is not a good fit here in Tampa…I want Greg Hardy…
I just feel like Hardy and McCoy would compliment each other perfectly…I know he has some baggage but if he’s cleared to play we should make a move for him…Look, I know Tampa Bay usually prefers “high character” guys but this mentality is why we continue to suck year after year…We need to win football games; I want football players not boy scouts…
Imagine this scenario…we sign Hardy, and LB Eric Kendricks falls to us in the 2nd round…Plugging those 2 studs into our starting line-up would be insane…

What Booger fails to mention is that he was drafted by the Bucs to give them 2 Sapp’s. That was his comparison coming out of LSU. He was a dominant pass rusher and a disruptive force who was quick off the ball, but a little larger and stronger than Sapp to hold up in the run game (sound a ton like Suh in comparison to McCoy). The problem with him was that he couldn’t stay on the field and was somewhat of a bust (for his expectations). Is paying what he would command a bit of a problem? Yea, but not as much as one might think. We are going to have Winston, who is on a rookie deal, and although it’s more $ because of the #1 pick, it’s not the crippling financial commitment a #1 pick was of days past. Hopefully they’ve learned from Johnson and cut their losses. There are pass rushers available who will not command a huge salary (Freeny for ex.) One would think that guys might sign 1 year deals to play one on one next to McCoy and Suh hoping to rack up sack and get paid the following year.

DEEnice07 – I agree with you 100% on Booger. I love the guy on the radio and as a person, but as a player he was kind of a bust for a 1st rounder. He had one solid season with us (6.5 sacks) but spent too much time on IR. He has 2 Super Bowl rings that are basically gifts because he didn’t play in either game. He’s a good dude though!
Concerning Suh, it would be awesome, but I just don’t think it’s going to happen. I bet we’ll make a solid offer, but there will be a team that outbids us. One thing is for sure, Suh is getting PAID this offseason, but we shouldn’t throw over $30 mil towards 2 DT. Too many holes in other places.

it’s a fair point, and one i hadn’t considered, although it has a little bit of that “i can’t get galloway and antonio bryant on the field together because their roles are too similar” flavor to it. pretty rigid and limiting thinking, especially if both are capable of doing more than attacking the B gap. seems to me like an extraordinary advantage to have 2 elite interior guys and not have the defense know which one is setting up as the under tackle from one play to the next

Having Mccoy in the 3 and Suh in the 1 would cause so many headaches for opposing OC’s. Not to mention Greg Hardy at the 6. But this isnt Madden franchise mode were talking about. Investing that much in one group isnt practical. Plus we gotta have room for Orlando Franklin 🙂

Having Suh in the 1 and McCoy in the 3 would create chaos on our OWN defense. BOTH are 3’s. What this would do is convert the front to a 3-4 attack, that would compromise the strengths of McCoy and Suh, while strengthening the weakness of an outside rush…in either direction.
I’m glad you saved your post by introducing the reality of concentrating resources at the position of greatest need. Getting an edge rush is what we need to let McCoy have his Warren Sapp moment…the way Simeon liberated Sapp.
It’s going to have to come from free agency…because I don’t see a 6′ 5″ 250 lb DE that can run a forty in 4.3 seconds…but that’s how we got Simeon…we PAID him after he had been toiling in obscurity and misused by Arizona (the team that drafted him). His talents were maximized in the defense…and THAT move would instantly make the d-line and secondary a force to be reckoned with…

why not think outside the “box” . put McCoy or suh at defensive end. preferably McCoy since his first step is the best in the league. just a thought , but I also think they could work well together attacking both the A and the B gap. money will probably dictate that it never happens , but what a tandem it would be. as for McFarland , he fed off of sapp and never lived up to his potential. biggest underachiever on that team.point is , I am convinced booger can’t tell anyone how to play the position.

If having 2 big money DTs was worth it, they would’ve re-signed Sapp in 2004 and not let him walk so they could pay Booger.

Booger was in injured reserve and did not contribute much to the SB defense nor very much after.

As others have pointed out: Booger didn’t play most of the Bucs SB season & in either SB.
The Bucs drafted Booger one pick before J. Kearse (drafted by Chris Landry then GM of the Titans, who some of you criticize) and the draft after Sapp & Culpepper were statistically the best defensive tackle duo in the league.
Booger is probably correct on this point however, this Bucs fan found him disappointing as a player.

I love the financial concern being represented.
I’m not a fan of big money free agents. They usually flop, and I think it’s because they lack passion. Suh is a nasty bastard. He’s dirty, he’s ferocious. He’s one of very few players that I think will “not” be adversely effected by a contract.
Suh attacks the helmet in front of him, he can’t help himself. That means he’s not Michael Johnson, or Goldson, or Revis. He might not be a perfect schematic fit, but the money “must” be spent…and if you align his contract with a rookie QB then it makes sense.

I don’t want Suh at 15 mil but Booger is an idiot. The Lions drafted Suh & Fairley back to back in the 1st round, the Panthers drafted Lotulelei & Short back to back. Those happen to be 2 of the best 40 front DLs in the NFL.
The Bucs tried to do the same & would have had the best DT combo in the NFL if Brian Price was healthy.
As it stands we have 2 good 3-techs in McCoy/McDonald which is why I argued on twitter last year that Aaron Donald would be a poor value pick, even though I was/am a huge fan of his game. No doubt Evans is worth more to this team than Donald, just as the $15+ mil for Suh is better served elsewhere.

the money argument holds no water. the bucs are so starved for talent and so devoid of players worth bigtime contracts that we could spend FORTY million on the DT position each of the next 2 seasons and still sign every other player we want. we have more holes than can be filled in this Free Agency window, and draftees cost almost nothing for the first 4 years. we have no $20 million QB, we jettisoned our highly paid CB, and 2 monsters at DT lessens the need for a big financial splash in a DE market that has only 1 potentially dominant player (hardy), assuming his domestic issues are behind him and the full year off didn’t set him back any.
