Important people on Team Mariota think he can play Day 1

It’s official, Bucs offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter has been talking about Marcus Mariota to his old colleague and friend Mark Helfrich, the Oregon head coach.

It’s got draft gurus chatting about whether Mariota would be targeted — and ready — to play for Tampa Bay on Day 1.

You can listen to all of Helfrich here on “The Rich Eisen Show.”

He’s extremely confident that Mariota can succeed quickly in the NFL under a coach with the right strengths and background.

“We have elements of option; we have elements of West Coast. You know, our passing game would fit into any other NFL franchise’s playbook very easily,” Helfrich said of the Oregon offense. “A lot is being made that [Mariota] is going to have this drastic, huge learning curve to the NFL from a schematic standpoint. I don’t think that is true. Dirk Koetter is the offensive coordinator in Tampa now, has a huge background that I have been fortunate enough to learn from for many, many years. And there’s a bunch of stuff in our offense that will marry up well.”

So Mariota can be Day 1 ready?

That’s dangerous stuff. Even Tony Dungy told Joe that Mariota would need plenty of developmental time. Nothing wrong with that, if you’re a head coach not worried about job security.

NFL Network draft gurus Daniel Jeremiah and Charles Davis dove into the possibility of Mariota being Day 1-ready in this excellent video. As Davis has said previously, the 2011 lockout forced Carolina and Cincinnati to devise college-like offenses for their rookie QBs. Cam Newton and and Andy Dalton went on to have great years.

You can hear all of Helfrich below.

Certainly NOT what Joe and the Winstonites want to contemplate.

  2. the Cannon Says:

It’s about damn time some common sense is showing it’s face

  3. WS99 Says:

I just have to keep telling myself “this kid is going to be good” but I still can’t believe it. I wish I could.

  4. the Cannon Says:

It’s about damn time some common sense is showing it’s face. we don’t need a quick fix, we need long term stability

  5. Josh P Says:

Potiential smokescreen leverage for a trade with the Birds. This is actuay starting to get fun.

  6. tmaxcon Says:

Long term stability and WINNING = Winston

Mariota = a project that is injury prone and fragile with a huge risk.

  7. Josh P Says:

Yes a head coach showing support for his former player. This is just shocking news.

  8. LargoBuc Says:

You know Mariota would be a good fit for say the Packers where he could learn from Rodgers where he sits and learns to be a NFL quarterback and even provide releif for an injured Aaron Rodgers.
Could he be a week one starter for the Bucs? Maybe. I still think throwing him in a pro style could be rough in that scenario. And if we just run “spread” every down opposing defenses will have their way.
I like Mariota. Anyone could see he’s an amazing athlete. I just dont think he’s the best choice for a team that wants (needs?) to start a rookie qb now.

  9. Jeagan1999 Says:

EVERY college QB will have a learning curve coming to the NFL! The question is, is a college QB smart enough, athletic enough, hard working enough and mature enough to learn quickly and transition quickly into the pro game? I think Maripta is all of those things and more!

  10. Jeagan1999 Says:

EVERY college QB will have a huge huge learning curve coming to the NFL! The question is, is a college QB smart enough, athletic enough, hard working enough and mature enough to learn quickly and transition quickly into the pro game? I think Maripta is all of those things and more!

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Is it just me….or are the articles becoming more pro-Mariota…..or at the very least equal on both QBs?

Perhaps this is just the “news of the day” and Joe is feeding it to us…..

Anyway, thanks Joe….because both QBs have a real shot at being picked.

As the draft gets closer the Mocks may get more even….

Long term stability and WINNING = Winston
    ……………………………………….
LOL yeah when I think of stability a picture of Winston pops in my head

  13. SoonerinTampa Says:

200 comments on this post easy…the FSU trolls will beat the hell out anyone who dares speak ill of the Lord and Master of the QB position.

  14. Nick Says:

Congrats, Mariota Mob! The first legitimate piece of evidence in your favor. Still about 786 to 1. But big day none the less.

  15. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

tmaxcon is consistently earning his new tmoron nickname. Get a clue. #MariotascomingtoTampa

  16. knuckledragger Says:

    @SoonerinTampa
Sad but true. Oh well it is all good for entertainment. I love to come home after work and read the comments!

  17. knuckledragger Says:

Don’t know why my comment is awaiting moderation. I used no dirty words. Smh

  18. salish_seamonster Says:

    Yes to Mariota.

  19. MadMax Says:

Could he develop into the type of QB that I think Winston already is as a pocket passer? Maybe, in time. His leg speed is unquestionable. But Winston has that brain speed plus touch on the ball when he throws. They’re both not ready day 1 though. Thats why we’re keeping Glennon!

Its going to be another bad year, 5-7 wins. But thats moving up in the correct direction…..takes time.

  20. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

The Joes (like all other NFL teams) are going to start slowly trying to distance themselves from Winston as this draft process stretches on…. How in the heck is Joe’s credibility going to survive another horrible QB endorsement like Johnny from last year?!?? You’re on a slippery slo poo e, Joes.

  21. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

tmaxcon is steadily earning his new tmoron nickname. Get a clue. #MariotascomingtoTampa

  22. DooshLaRue Says:

    TBBF
I was thinking the same thing.
Maybe it was the pic of Winston on the mound that got Joe to start hedging a bit.
He looks a lot like a MLB pitcher too me.

BTW, my vote is to trade down and take Bryce Petty.

  23. Rob Says:

NO quarterback is day 1 ready. That’s nonsense. Some guys might catch on more quickly, but throwing QB’s to the wolves on day one is never a good idea – Winston, Mariota, or anyone else.

That said, I don’t see anything in Mariota’s make up that would mean he couldn’t make the transition as well as anyone else.

  24. tmaxcon Says:

Eric go back to peddling your PED garbage and order your Winston Jersey.

Draft Jameis, fire Lovie! save the bay!

  25. bucs4lyfe Says:

I think mariotta is a great kid and gonna be a good player in the nfl but not even a starter in high school and didn’t play much. then considering the offense he went to hey I like mariotta too but you have to admit that with that said he’s going to be a project and that’s something the bucs just don’t need

  26. Pickgrin Says:

It could work – but it would be a forced fit with the players we have now. Koetter and Bajakian are certainly capable of shortening Mariota’s learning curve and creating an offense that will help cater to his strengths – but considering our best offensive weapons besides Simms are all 6’5″ – its just not a good fit. And having Glennon try and operate in a system that emphasizes QB athleticism just flat out does not work – so we would also need a different bridge/back up QB as well. Makes no sense when you can take Winston who has more NFL ready talent than Mariota and more QB talent period.

Try as you might Mariota Mob – you are really reaching when the obvious answer as to what will happen is so obvious.

  27. Supersam Says:

Welcome to Tampa Mariota!! I can’t wait, and all you Winston lovers can go find a new team.

  28. Jim Says:

Why are most worried about NEXT season than the following ten+ seasons? This season ticket holder since 1977 predicts that Winston is the choice, 2017 will be Lovie’s last season as coach. If you want to get rid of Lovie -Winston is the man!

  29. Supersam Says:

Tmaxcon can go be a jets fan, cuz that’s where Winston is gonna be playing. Watch and see.

  30. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

Is that fear I smell….Jameis sluppers are neverous

  31. The Real Malloy Says:

I just cannot wait for draft day when we pass on Winston. It’ll be like Christmas!

The Joe’s are used to this QB drafting dissapointment..so I think they’ll be OK. All of you pounding the table for Winston on the other hand….It will be so very sweet.

  32. Eric Says:

I believe it will be Jameis, but it is exciting to contemplate Marcus hooking up with our OC.

Surely a lot more so than we have seen here in a long time.

Looks like Jameis pulled ahead after combine, but lots of positive trends toward Mariota lately.

Not to mention the Eagles seem to be contemplating a big offer. They may end up making us one we can’t refuse.

  33. Supersam Says:

The Bucs are keeping it juicy until draft day pretending like Winston ever had a chance, they’ve wanted Mariota since day one. Mariota fits everything Lovie wants in a quarterback, Winston is everything Lovie doesn’t want.

  34. bucs4lyfe Says:

a mariotta video was bound so surface at some point but it sure didn’t seem like anything was being attached to the bucs….I think mariotta is going to change the draft and the titans are going to cash in on all the teams going crazy to jump up to get him because Winston is going first

  35. tmaxcon Says:

I can’t wait to Mariota and Saint Tebow get popped for solicitation before the draft. I just hope it’s a girl and not an innocent petting zoo goat they get caught double teaming. Tebow can hook him up in TV afterwards

    Winston the real deal!

  36. WS99 Says:

    Joejoe

Yes it’s fear like when you have diarrhea and have to fart.

  37. MadMax Says:

Crazy how you Mariota guys go all out against Winston fans. I’d be ok with Mariota too but he would need a lot more time to develop, thats why I prefer Winston.

  38. MadMax Says:

Im out….have to sleep, work 3rd tonight.

  39. WS99 Says:

All great players have a chip on their shoulder not on their sideline.

  40. Eric Says:

Well to get a huge deal from the Eagles they have to play up like they are strongly considering Marcus.

All their picks this year, Foles, and their number one next year

Foles has destroyed us every time we play him.

  41. knucknbuc Says:

Yep mariota is the man. A lot of Winston fans gonna be real pissed. That’s ok though they’ll come back once they see mariota killing it for us and jameis leftwich err…Winston struggling on the titans or jets.

  42. robert 9 Says:

how is anyone surprised mariotta will be the pick. only question is will he be ready day one. I would be more comfortable giving glennon the reigns, but it depends on the system they implement.

winston is a clown with talent and character issues. people say the players love him. yeah, the 21 year old guys. lol

but they do not make the decisions. he may even drop like a rock on draft day.

  43. LargoBuc Says:

Guys there is a really good article on PR in their “fab 5” and the first section basically compares Winston and Mariota in a way that most national media types dont have the guts to attempt
It lacks a little in objectivity but really a good piece. I wont post a link cause I dont want to get banned but its really worth a read.

  44. robert 9 Says:

joe’s not on a slippery slope with me, he’s just rooting for the guy which draws the most attention, if bobby brown crackhead was a QB joe would be rooting for him.

it’s like a trainwreck, who can look away?

  45. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

ESPN’s Todd McShay: Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston. McShay writes: He is such a natural passer in terms of his ability to anticipate throws and deliver the ball accurately and, to me, if you limit it to an on-field evaluation, he’s second only to Andrew Luck among QB prospects of the past 10 years.

SBNation: Winston. Writer Dan Kadar has been steady with Winston the last couple weeks. Kadar writes: If Winston’s immaturity isn’t an issue for general manager Jason Licht or head coach Lovie Smith, he should be the pick.”

CBSSports’ Pat Kirwan: Winston. Kirwan writes: Some believe it isn’t a lock for the Bucs to take Winston, but at this point I’m not one of those non-believers. I interviewed Jameis at the combine and I could see how he could win over a team like Tampa.

CBSSports’ Rob Rang: Winston. Rang writes: “The release of Josh McCown appears to signal the Bucs are locking in on a quarterback with this pick and, at least on the field, Winston is clearly the most pro-ready passer in this class.”

CBS/NFLDraftScout: Winston. Dan Brugler writes: “Asking around at the NFL Scouting Combine, I could not find anyone (NFL scout, analyst, etc.) who doesn’t think Winston will be the No. 1 pick.”

NFL.com’s Bucky Brooks: Winston. Brooks writes: Winston impressed observers with his high football IQ and spectacular arm talent at the NFL Scouting Combine. He is an ideal fit for Dirk Koetter’s vertical passing game.

NFL.com’s Charles Davis: Winston. Davis switched from his last projection, which was for Marcus Mariota. Davis writes: “I have opined that Marcus Mariota would fit nicely here as well, but all signs point to Winston being the choice and it makes sense.”

NFL.com’s Daniel Jeremiah: Winston. Jeremiah writes: “I still believe Marcus Mariota is in play for this pick, but I’m going to stick with Winston.”

Fox Sports: Winston. Peter Schrager writes: This pick could end up being the most important one of Tampa Bay GM Jason Licht’s career. And in the end, I think it’ll be Winston.

    Unchanged picks

ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr.: Winston. Kiper writes: I had Winston here in my first mock, and while I believe the Buccaneers will take a close look at Marcus Mariota here and make him an option, I project at this point they end up with the superior talent, assuming their inquiries and many questions into his past off-field behavior and maturity are answered and they feel comfortable. That’s still a big “if.”

Sports Illustrated: Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota. The former Duck has been atop Chris Burke’s mock draft in all four iterations. Burke writes: About three months of nitpicking are coming. Can Mariota translate his game from the Oregon offense to the NFL? Is Winston too immature or turnover-prone to step in as a rookie starter? Everyone’s trying to answer those questions, though this all boils down to which guy the Buccaneers trust. Mariota has held this spot in our mock drafts since the Buccaneers moved into the No. 1 spot.

The Sporting News: Mariota. Eric Galko writes: “While he’s no longer the consensus top quarterback in the 2015 NFL Draft, Mariota will still be the top pick.”

NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein: Winston. Zierlein writes: “Winston has warts to be sure, but pairing him with Mike Evans could ultimately prove to be too enticing for the Bucs to pass on.”

Final tally: Winston 11, Mariota 2

  46. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

That’s the current tally boys…read it and weep.

    Joe knows what’s up.

  47. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

Final tally: Winston 11, Mariota 2

Yah robert you’re right Winston’s going to drop like a rock on draft day…

Final tally: Winston 11, Mariota 2

  48. Ray Rice Says:

The YUCS have elements of everything in their offense except an offensive line.

  49. Bucs#1 Says:

It amazes me how all of the Winstonites just automatically think that if the Bucs draft Winston that they are just automatically going to “win now”. Ain’t gonna happen. He just turned 21 and has only played 2 years of college ball against weak competition. No way is he ready for the NFL. Guys, get a grip and come back down to reality

  50. Skyline Crew Says:

Mariota already knows the plays via white board from the combine and interviews he had there. He knows the sets. Nothing to see here, Mariota is the best pick at #1.

Gruden: “He played pretty well for [Oregon head coach Mark] Helfrich at Oregon without Chip Kelly,” Gruden said. He’s 6-4, he ran a 4.5. He has quickness, he’s a quick thinker, I’ve seen him throw into tight windows. If you don’t like Mariota, you don’t like human beings.”

  51. Skyline Crew Says:

“I had the impression, and I don’t know why, maybe because he’s a little bit of a quiet demeanor, that [Mariota] is kind of maybe a bit of a wallflower type, and he’s anything but,” Chris Landry said. “You can tell he’s very competitive, very organized. [..] What was really impressive is he knew all the coaches’ names, and I’m not talking the head coach, I’m talking the position coaches, so he’d done his homework in obviously knowing who was who, who did what, who coached what, he had a lot of good reference stuff. He asked a bunch of questions, he took notes.

“The biggest thing I got with [Mariota] was his competitive fire. He was very focused, very intense, you know he listened intently, he knew about the teams’ personnel. I mean you know, in the NFL, the teams that were interviewing. He knew about a lot of their sets, the players that were on it, he knew a lot about their offensive systems.

“He was extremely good on the grease board. When they put him and put NFL stuff on it it’s a lot more detailed and complex than what you see on some of the TV skits that they do. He was really good with that. He understands the difference, a lot of the differences of the concepts in the college game, was very good at explaining that. And yet you could tell he spent a lot of team studying NFL systems.

“Wasn’t very interested in talking about what he was good at. That was really intriguing. He talked more about what he needed to improve on. He didn’t think he was good at, you know, experience under center and whatnot, and he showed he even brought in a tape of what he’s been working on and asking some feedback from the coaches. Theis guy really gets it, you can tell he has that gymrat approach to it, the ‘Don’t tell me what I can do good, tell me what I can do better’ type of approach.”

  52. BP52 Says:

I will be happy with whatever the Bucs decide to do with that #1 pick just as long as they don’t draft Turd Winston

  53. Skyline Crew Says:

Joel Klatt: Marcus Mariota is best QB to enter #NFLDraft in last 3 years…Winston is second @NFLonFOX @CFBONFOX

  54. Posey99 Says:

    @87

Yep, looks like the typical copycat media mock draft season.

  55. Skyline Crew Says:

“Marcus has an unbelievable mind,” Ducks offensive coordinator Scott Frost said. “I think that’s his best attribute. Despite being able to do everything he can do physically, he can process things so fast. Sometimes he makes me feel inadequate because of how fast he can process through things.”

  56. Skyline Crew Says:

Question No. 2: Where Does Mariota Win?
The two plays above show three winning facets of Mariota’s game that will transition to the NFL:
    • He’s adept and getting rid of the ball quickly and with placement in the short game.
    • He executes football sleight-of-hand effectively within a spread offense.
    • He possesses sound mechanics with his footwork and release from the pocket on short and intermediate routes, which is a building block for success within a structure.

Mariota also frequently wins in tight-window, sideline throws delivered inside and outside structure. Both plays below are reminiscent of highlights seen from Aaron Rodgers’ game. However, I caution you not to take that statement and run with it.
This first-down, back-shoulder fade displays Mariota’s anticipation, placement, and comfort around edge pressure. The edge rush approaches the quarterback’s outside shoulder, and Mariota slides just enough to deliver the ball on the mark to the left sideline. –Football Outsiders

  57. Skyline Crew Says:

Anyways, we know that Mariota is going to be the #1 pick. Let’s talk about round 2.

Joe, is there any truth to the stories out there that the Bucs may be considering trading back up to get Ereck Flowers?

“Charlie Campbell reported on the Pat and Aaron Show on 620 WDAE that they could trade back up into the first round to draft Miami tackle Ereck Flowers. Campbell used to cover the Bucs for Pewter Report, so he certainly has some connections in the area.”

  58. Bucs#1 Says:

So Chris Landry said that the Bucs are meeting with Loenard William’s representatives. Interesting

  59. Sim Says:

Mariotta should be the choice here. Winston’s bust factor is so high and the scouting on him is reminiscent of Ryan Leaf. The guy is a turnover machine that can’t read underneath coverage, doesn’t look off safeties, rarely goes to 2nd or 3rd options, has a wind-up release, and is as flawed a human being as the 1st round has seen in many years. Mariotta offers the franchise a chance at real stability and leadership and the chance to develop a true frontline QB. Mariotta, on the other hand has a higher ceiling and higher floor IMO. He is a pure worker, can make the throws, is a magician in and out of the pocket, and is a true franchise leader. His development may take longer, but franchises should make picks based on long term benefit and not allow coaches to pick guys to avoid getting fired.

With that said, this staff and front office is a joke and will likely go for the low hanging fruit in Winston. Every decision they have made to this point has been a total disaster, including last year’s free agency sh** show. The Glazer’s should have done the prudent thing by cleaning house and bringing in a head coach that won’t squander this golden opportunity at #1.

  60. robert 9 Says:

winstons bust to success factor is about 4:1 against him.

  61. BP52 Says:

Mariota is a Stud. Winston is a Dud

  62. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

Mariota is the prototypical NFL QB
Jameis is a chubotub gummy bear

  63. Bucs#1 Says:

    Skyline

Thanks for the good factual content. Keep the real info coming Brother

  64. BirdDoggers Says:

If Oregon had elements of different style offenses, it didn’t show up on film. It’s safe to say every offense has bits and pieces of different schemes. The scheme Oregon ran is the reason so many analysts are having a hard time projecting Mariota to the NFL. He wasn’t asked to do the things pro QBs are required to be proficient at. Helfrich is promoting his player. Nothing wrong with that. Mariota could end up being a very good QB at the pro level. He’s certainly worth a shot if the coaches and scouts think he’s got what it takes.

  65. BarrydestroyedTheEvidence Says:

SELL THE FRANCHISE THIS TEAM WILL BE A JOKE NEXT YEAR REGARDLESS OF THE QB!

  66. Supersam Says:

@Skyline Yes thank you for those comments, it’s refreshing to hear some actual Posotive things said on Mariota. To me it’s a simple choice, Mariota. He’s more talented than Winston has no off the feild troubles, don’t give a spit about baseball and the guy is a winner!!! Why the heck is this even a discussion anymore!? It’s a no brainer, Winston will set this franchise back a decade and will cost a lot of people there jobs. Trust me, kid has bust written all over him.

  67. chris k Says:

@87, who’s really more credible? 32 NFL executives or mock drafters that have no skin in the game? It’s ok, you can say it, real football fans already know the answer to that. Throw in Winston having weight issues (you cant deny a fact) Weighed 248 at the Ducks game (amazing a leader let himself go) and then 261 a couple of weeks after before training for the combine (holy freaking weight issues) it becomes his like what is that? 20th redflag? I stopped counting. Go back and watch his 40 (which every scout has done) and where I agree time doesn’t matter so much for Qb’s, watch him sucking wind the last 10 yards. You know what that means right? You can say it, we all already know, it means poor conditioning! A poorly conditioned can’t control his weight headcase over Mariota? I think you might wanna start finding out the sizes of all these Jerseys you need to buy.

  68. rayjay1122 Says:

I will be a little bit happier if Mariota is our pick however I am fine with Winston. My biggest concerns with Winston is him getting sick of losing with the Bucs and leaving us high and dry to be a Baseball star. Individual efforts are more noticeable as a Pitcher than as a QB. You can be an All Star on a losing Baseball team but rarely does a QB of a losing football team get any recognition. Winston comes across to me to be more of a diva and will need a positive image as a star player even if he has a negative image as a human being. Mariota seems more humble and prepared to handle losing a little bit until everything comes together. I also like not having to worry about Mariota ditching his craft to play another sport. Just my personal thoughts and opinions though. I am not proclaiming to be right or know what will actually transpire in either players future if picked by the Bucs.

  69. Nick2 Says:

Why can’t Lovie and Licht just put an end to all this nonsense and proclaim who their preferred pic is??? Lovie loves to keep us all guessing until the last minute but 8 more weeks of this is going to drive me nuts!!!!!!!!!!

  70. c-spann Says:

I prefer Winston, just because he has shown the ability to overcome deficits in big games. He has a lot of INT this year but he was able to power thru the mistakes and come out on top. MM is good but to me he as never shown the moxie to comeback when his team is down. I will be more than happy to have either, I just down want them to trade the pick and we will be right back where we started; with no QB.

  71. Celly Says:

    @Skyline

Right…cause Gruden is always so hard on players.

What would’ve been post-worthy is if Gruden said that Winston was a bad QB.

  72. No qb in 1st Says:

Only thing I wonder is you hear of many teams being interested in mariota
Willing to trade but you hear of no one trying to move up to grab Winston
Start Glennon groom mariota unless there’s a great trade offer

  73. aceofaerospace Says:

We “sucked for the duck”. Now make the call. However if by some fluke/act of God/who could’ve seen that coming scenario we draft Winston instead, I will be his biggest fan.

  74. Bucs#1 Says:

    Nick

Because they don’t know who or what it is at this point. Just pace yourself Brother, lol

  75. Lion Says:

I find it extremely amusing that any pro Mariota crowd love to say that any evidence that the Bucs are leaving towards Winston being the pick is nothing but a smokescreen, but any pro Mariota news

  76. Lion Says:

Is 100% the accurate. You can’t have it both ways

  77. Nybucsfan Says:

@87 do you ignore everything not Winston? Joe post the other day that NFL executives preferred Mariota. They matter way more than someone that doesn’t actually get to make a pick

  78. Bucs#1 Says:

So Winston said at the combine that after the Rose Bowl, where he and his Noles got pounded by Mariota and his Ducks, that his weight got into the 260’s. Then he had to hurry up and take it off to look his best at the combine. So after the draft and his contract signing when the pressure is off it’s probably back to the 260’s again, maybe more. Yep, Jamarcus Russell 2.0

  79. JSmalls Says:

    Is Mariota clutch?

  80. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

Bucs#1, Winston did not say that. Noted Winston HATER Chris Landry said that

  81. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

Since 3/1 WalterFootball has added 17 mock drafts to it’s database

15 have the Bucs taking Winston
1 has the Bucs taking Mariota
1 has the Bucs taking Leonard Williams

  82. Bucs#1 Says:

    Hand Cream

If Landry said that Winston said it, then he said it. Grow up

  83. SteveBucsFan Says:

Sorry, joe doesn’t do the link parade in comments. –Joe

  84. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Sure…..the early Mocks (and they are early) pick Winston…..the Mockers don’t like to change back and forth…..so, I believe there will be some switching to Mariota closer to the draft. This will reflect what NFL execs think.

Once Mockers believe Lovie has the backing of the Glazers with more time to rebuild the Bucs….Mariota will be their choice.

  85. robert 9 Says:

they should consider winston for squidwards job at the crusty crab on spongebob

never liked that dude, and his crabby patties suck

  86. BP52 Says:

Everybody keeps harping on Winston’s and Mariota’s school grades. I hope they post their Wonderlic scores

I just saw a tweet from the Combine. In the 40 yard dash, Jameis Winston is now approaching the finish line

  88. mikeh Says:

@rayjay- that’s the problem with Winston among a few others. he is a its all about me person. and that is not good.

  89. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

TBBF, you put an awful lot of stock into that Walter Football database when it was showing Mariota love….just sayin’

  90. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

Bucs#1, Landry never said Winston said it.

  91. MTM Says:

Mariota will be fine in the Bucs new offense. I’m sure Koetter is calling plays where the quarterback throws to receivers. Enough of the total freaking b.s. that Mariota won’t succeed because of the “system” he played in. Child please!

  92. Skyline Crew Says:

Wonderlick scores don’t matter. Look to Big Ben for that one.

  93. mikeh Says:

and does not mean didly! who or how many have the bucs taking whoever! people. only the bucs know for now.

  94. mikeh Says:

also I doubt the bucs have even made up there minds yet! on who there taking.

  95. tye Says:

Dangerous stuff would be trusting JW as the pick… This is going to be the ultimate train wreck… If this happens, the Bucs present and future will mirror their poor past… It is said “those who do not learn from their past are destined to repeat mistakes!”

  96. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

chris k…the mocks don’t lie. Especially when it comes to the #1 pick.

“Since 3/1 WalterFootball has added 17 mock drafts to it’s database

15 have the Bucs taking Winston
1 has the Bucs taking Mariota
1 has the Bucs taking Leonard Williams”

They will tell you it doesn’t matter….but it does!

  98. Bucs#1 Says:

    Hand Cream

Yep, Landry said it when he was on with Duemig Friday. Go Listen

  99. Bucs#1 Says:

262 lbs. Winston said. That’s really a lot of Crab legs

  100. P'cola Buc Says:

Mocks as 87 states are very accurate when predicting the number 1 overall pick. A size sample of 66 different mock drafts is a very large one. These 66 mock drafts were done between February 22nd, 2015 to February 28th, 2015. The number 1 chosen picks yeilded the following results:

    Winston : 61
    Mariota : 03
    Williams : 02

Outstanding results for Winston! For Mariota to catch up that much ground would take nothing other than a mirace.

    Geeeze….miracle^^

  104. Bucs#1 Says:

It doesn’t matter what any of the mocks say. It only matters what Lovie, Licht and the Glazers think. Chris Landry said Friday that he knows for a fact that they haven’t made up their minds yet. They are also meeting with Leonard William’s representatives.

  105. P'cola Buc Says:

Those who do the mocks have their own inside information as well. The sample size of 66 is significant. It also percentage wise backs up 87’s 17 sample size to a “T”. Those who do mock drafts are involved with the NFL for a living. They are more than mere people on the street. What I’m trying to say here is that at this point in time, with the information they have, they feel the Buccaneers will chose Winston with their number one pick.

  106. Skyline Crew Says:

There have been times when the #1 mock pick wasn’t the actual #1 draft pick.

  107. White Tiger Says:

You guys act like a huge transition has to happen…some of us have been saying EXACTLY the same thing as this post…you can draft Mariota, a few o-linemen later in the draft, and still be relevant (i.e., WIN more than you lose) very quickly.

You have the very recent model of Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle…and in our own division…Carolina…to see that a different offense allows you to become a lot more relevant, a lot more quickly.

You don’t have to married to QB who can “escape” pressure – if he has a pretty good offensive line that’s staffed by a massive-yet-agile Left Tackle…or who will be as effective a MG8 if he does NOT have a massive-yet-agile Left Tackle…

It’s a toss up – to the fans – I know which way I’d prefer the Bucs to go…the one where we’re more flexible AND relevant more quickly – by NOT taking yet another QB that runs a forty in 4.97 “…but throws this here football over that mountain over there…”

Most of them are historically copycats. You can put as much weight into the mock drafts as prior seasons. The media now a days is about as accurate as your local weatherman. The teams are a lockbox with their information. We have a draft party at my buddy’s house every year who is currently a starter on an NFL roster. Nobody has accurate information especially anyone affiliated with the media.

  109. White Tiger Says:

If those who did “mocks” for living – ever got a gig with a team – they wouldn’t be doing “mocks”.

How many “mocks” had Johnny Football as the 1st overall, consensus pick?

How many “mocks” simply copied off someone else paper – selling their particular angle while not really doing any of their own work?

I’ve only ever used “mocks”…to get an idea of some of the football types think…but I focus more on Gil Brandt’s picks as we get close to the final 30 days.

Each of them will tell you it’s a crap shoot…and here’s a clue: if they ask where you’re from, then don’t be surprised if they say nice things about your favorite team’s QB…

Using “mocks” to justify why your favorite NFL team MUST pick the QB of your favorite college team…is a recipe for disaster (not to mention heartbreak).

See, unlike guys who do “mocks” for a website, or television, or radio station…NFL GM’s and head coaches don’t really care how importantly you esteem your favorite college teams QB. They care about getting the guy that is the best QB for the system they plan to run.

Tell me the system that the Bucs new OC plans to run…and I’ll introduce you to his connection to the QB NOT named the Jameis Winston…

  110. mikeh Says:

    @white tiger spot on!

  111. ndog Says:

It’s so sad that you guys hoping for us to draft Mariots don’t realize that you should just be hoping for us to suck. This guy has bust written all over him. Name the other qb that is soft spoken, from a spread offense, not accurate on throws in the red zone and didn’t win crap as a team in college that went on to be successful in the NFL. I mean I’m not trying to be a jerk but do you guys really feel like this guy can make it in the NFL? I mean what has he done to make him so special, that you guys think he can overcome all of these obstacles when no one else had ever done it?

  112. loggedontosay Says:

It does not matter what he says because it is not true. Oregon could not defeat Ohio State because Ma-ri-o-ta could not complete pass in tight windows. The Bucs can take Mariota; it will just be another failed QB experience, and more losing seasons for years to come.

  113. the real Buck Bruce Says:

Do any of you guys have daughters if the answer is yes would you let her wear a Jameis Winston jersey to the game knowing that he is an alleged rapist.

  114. loggedontosay Says:

I would let my daughter wear a Jameis Winston jersey. No ones character should be held to the standard of lies of another person. That woman is a liar. I will not use her name because I do not know if Joe allows that.

  115. White Tiger Says:

Mariota had some nice passes completed in that college football playoff game against Ohio State (the one where Mariota previously annihilated & thoroughly dominated Kid Fameis’ team). I should know, I watched it very closely…I’m a Buckeye fan.

I watched Mariota hit 20, 30 and a 40 yard passes…effortlessly, ball comes back…ball is G-O-N-E (unlike when Kid Fameis throws, which is more like ball comes back, backbackbackbackkkk…then he lets er rip).

Yeah, no, I’m no FSU cooled drinker. Make mine Mariota, please.

  116. JFF Says:

Who gives a flying F what Tony Dungy thinks about Mariota being NFL-ready or not? When did he become an expert QB scout or analyst?

Dammit Joe you act like every guy who’s stepped in an NFL building before has a gift for evaluating talent. The track record of some of these guys speaks otherwise, i.e. a Tampa 2 dinosaur like Dungy hasn’t a clue about offense, especially in this decade, and even his defensive scheme has become almost obsolete.
