Why McCown May Improve With Browns

So the Browns have signed aging, journeyman backup quarterback Josh McCown to a three-year deal, in part, for leadership skills.
Never mind that his leadership skills are why the Bucs are in position to draft his successor, Jameis Winston, with the first pick overall.
Generally, in times of strife and stress, a team turns to a true leader for guidance and help. Given how godawful both the Bucs and the quarterback were, that tells Joe something about McCown’s leadership abilities, or lack thereof.
To read the words of spreadsheeter Nathan Jahnke of Pro Football Focus, another reason McCown stunk so bad with the Bucs was, well, the Bucs.

Time will only tell if that is true or not. Good players find a way to get the job done. McCown, save for the sorry Redskins, simply didn’t.
And, no, not every good quarterback plays behind a brick wall of an offensive line. When you start having to make excuses for the worst quarterback in the NFL, it’s time to move on from said quarterback.

Besides, who is he throwing to? I would have to say the Bucs had better targets in V Jax and Evans (and ASJ… Not so much). And all those jump ball passes to the Dunkanneers… Oh ya, never mind those either.

I am convinced we have the answer to why Lovie played McCown late in the season instead of Glennon…..Lovie was desperately hoping that McCown would have some great games….even 2 or 3 so he could justify keeping him in 2015…..when that didn’t happen….he cut him immediately.
I used to think it had to do with Glennon…but no…..I don’t think it had anything to do at all with Glennon.

He’s a 36 year old journeyman QB who just became the highest paid babysitter in the history of the world. Good for him.
3 years – $15 million dollars………wow!!! He was 1-10 last year as a starter!
I know McCown is a great guy, but a great QB he is not.

All of these stat geeks trying to spin their opinion as a fact. Mccown was trash. Sorry. He seemed like a nice guy but he was turnover prone unlike any Bucs QB i’ve ever seen and if he was such a great leader the Bucs would’ve won this garbage division. Or at least finish better than 2-14.

When the team is trying to lose…you can’t really judge his production. He will certainly improve but he’s a journeyman QB for a reason

Josh May not have had the greatest line due to poor OC calling but that doesn’t excuse his poor decision making.
Inopportune INT’s or fumbles when deep on either side of the field were almost a signature McClown play. Hey if your going to get sacked, throw the ball away or eat it, don’t make the play worse with a stupid decision.
But time and time again that is exactly what he did and what he was known for in the past.
He will have a real OC and offensive line this year but unlike the Bucs, he won’t have three towers to throw too. In fact,meh may still be she’ll shocked because the Browns will probably be without and first team receivers to throw to.
He might have given the Bills a little more thought. A good offensive line and a rising star in Sammy Watkins.
All this proves is you should raise your son to be a backup NFL QB. Great job security and pay for marginal performance.

Josh is guaranteed 6.5mil and can make up to 14mil, was in talks with at least two teams immediately, and yet we got ZERO for him? 3rd or 4th rounder vs releasing him early as a favor? Unbelievable! I TRULY DON’T UNDERSTAND. Another front office WTF!

i like josh mccown but i just look at the numbers and they’re giving him 5 mil a year as well (14 mil/3 years). This made me laugh. I guess maybe theres not much guaranteed?? but i would offer 20 bucks a game after last years performance

However we can see the logic in having McCown in the
same building with Mr Football. McCown is a God-fearing
of upstanding character, professionality and toughness.
He may have been hired as a representative of “Big Brothers
& Big Sisters” to mentor The Johnny.

I think just having an experienced play-caller and coordinator should help him immensely. there were times last season that he made some major league throws… but he often followed those up with really bad decisions when under pressure.

Every team would have called our bluff and he would have ended up on our roster or just getting cut anyway, WNP doesn’t know we’re drafting a quarterback and have Glennon on the roaster too…… You can’t learn about front office deals on this site seriously people

Why would Cleveland or any other team give up a late round pick for him? It’s not like the teams that interviewed him but lost him to the Browns are worried they can’t find another backup QB once FA starts (Sanchez, Locker, Vick, etc)

I tend to occur with the guy from PFF. I think fans are overblowing Mccown’s performance. Hard to succeed with no coordinator in place, the worst oline in the NFL, and taking cumulative shots every week, and off and on injuries with personnel all add up to crappy performances. McCown isn’t without blame, but he’s no where near as bad as he seemed last year. He played better in the second half as well with I forget how many consecutive games with at least two td passes.
