Jameis Winston Hatchet Job On NFL.com

February 26th, 2015
Jameis

Joe will not tolerate this

Joe’s not going to sit quietly while Jameis Winston, likely the next Tampa Bay quarterback, is assaulted unfairly on the NFL’s official website in a story that, at best, misrepresents the words of Bucs management.

Here’s how the Chase Goodbread hit piece opens:

“At the NFL Scouting Combine last week in Indianapolis, Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Lovie Smith and GM Jason Licht both expressed cautious optimism that the team’s background checks on Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston would come back satisfactory.”

Joe has a huge problem with that. It’s not what the Bucs’ hierarchy said.

Licht and Lovie did not express “cautious optimism” about Winston background checks. What Lovie and Licht did express at the Combine is thorough confidence that their research into Winston to that point made them comfortable with him as a potential draft pick. And both said they would continue to research Winston’s background as they would other potential picks.

There’s a huge difference there.

Joe believes Goodbread crossed a line on that front and a correction/clarification is in order immediately.

The NFL.com article itself, titled “Story of Jameis Winston’s Accuser To Be Told In Documentary,” is about The Hunting Ground film on sexual assault issues on college campuses. It will feature Winston’s accuser, among others, and opens Friday.

The NFL.com piece shamefully closes with, “The Hunting Ground should provide the public with some of the same insight into Winston that the Bucs and other NFL clubs use in their final evaluation of the draft’s most polarizing figure.”

Really, Mr. Goodbread?

So the one-sided take of Winston’s accuser — Winston was never charged and was cleared by three separate entities — is going to provide “the same insight into Winston that the Bucs and other NFL clubs use in their evaluation?”

Joe’s going to bet Goodbread is not a Winston guy. And that’s just fine. No problem there. But this kind of attack job disguised as news on the league’s official website is inappropriate, and Joe sincerely hopes the folks at One Buc Palace make a phone call to the league office.

If this is what NFL.com is pumping out in February, Joe can only imagine what will be there as the draft gets closer.

Joe, now a Senator has asked each team to look at the documentary. My question is why she gets to tell her side when the guy was cleared 3 times. It make my blood boil to read 1 sided stories such as this when the evidence does not support the narrative. The sad part is they are doing it to create a story for clicks instead of responsible journalism.

It’s America, Luther. She can say what she wants. If Winston doesn’t like it, he can sue her successfully if it becomes malicious.–Joe

  2. Jb Says:

What do you expect? So many stories have been misconstrued and told the slant truth. They’ve carefully left out important details to fit their narrative and many choose not to look up facts themselves but just assume take others’ words for truth. Her story in the documentary is her 3rd version of the story and contradicts her own friends statements in the (public) police report.

And the 3rd time he was cleared was by one of the most respectable members within the law community. To think a cover up there is flat out ignorant.

  3. Jb Says:

*and don’t just contradict her friends’ statements but also her own.

  4. Yungry Says:

I’ll get the popcorn ready for tomorrow…Winston won’t be tossed anymore soft balls. God forbid this story won’t go away… What a shocker!~

Welcome to Tampa Mariota, Winston doesn’t fit in with what Lovie wants from his leader. Great article on Mariota right here (Not a message board link parade here. Especially with a six-month old piece.) Thanks. –Joe

i really think the nfl heads and media are trying desperately for mariota to get the 1 pick.

  7. ColoradoBuc Says:

Joe’s right – whether you want the Bucs to draft Winston or Mariotta, this is NOT journalism, but rather self-serving commercialism designed to keep the flames fanned, despite what Lovie has actually said.

    Gruden on Winston:
“He’s a dynamic kid,” Gruden said. “You don’t go to Florida State and meet many people that don’t love being around Winston. He is a polarizing player for some. Some people can’t agree on what he is off the field. I’ve got a lot of confidence that he’s learned some valuable lessons and he knows he’s going to be in the spotlight for the rest of his career. It’s up to him to get it done.”

  10. Howard Cosell Says:

I saw this coming like a train in the distance.
It will peak right at the draft.

Yeah. Look out. It’s going to get very political.

  11. knuckledragger Says:

    Gruden on Mariota:
“If you don’t like Marcus Mariota, you don’t like human beings,” Gruden said.

The one common criticism of Mariota is that he spent his college career playing in a spread offense. Gruden said he’s not worried about that.

“He’s not the offensive coordinator,” Gruden said. “It’s not his fault. What they do at Oregon is very unique. That type of football is on its way to the NFL. You’re seeing more and more no-huddle offenses. You see a lot of intermediate passes from 10 yards and in, which is a big part of Oregon.

“When you watch Philadelphia [which is coached by former Oregon coach Chip Kelly] play offense, you see the Oregon Ducks. The No. 1 offense in football the last two years is Philadelphia. So the system works. Mariota can play in that system. Somebody is going to see a (6-foot-4) quarterback with 4.5 speed. This guy is quick, he’s smart, he’s the most humble, hard-working guy maybe in this draft. I want him on my team. I’ll put my system in around him. I think personally Marcus Mariota can play in any system.”

  12. Greg Says:

What about the story on that same website that says acusser lawyer wanted insurance policy on winston his last year of college football. This is also the lawyer that said her client wouldn’t sleep w jameis bc he’s black although she was dating another black guy from different college. I’m sorry but the more this girl talks and keeps changing things from her accounts I don’t see anyway how it’s possible that she’s making the whole thing thing up

  19. Posey99 Says:

What everyone that is defending Winston is absolutely failing on is the FACT that there is a lawsuit still. It’s not over. If you think it is you haven’t educated yourself or you’re refusing to acknowledge what is happening. The girl and FSU are going to court because of FSU’s investigation. Jameis Winston can easily be pulled back into this (and civilly charged) That’s why Lovie and Licht kept saying “so far what we know” “with the information we have right now” etc. that IS cautious optimism. WAKEUP!

  23. Pickgrin Says:

Atta boy Joe. Way to take up for your future Buccaneers quarterback. We who support and prefer Winston as the Bucs QB choice and have bothered to actually investigate the facts regarding his “character concerns” feel compelled to do the same thing daily on JBF threads. In most every case – it comes down to sheer ignorance of the facts by those who speak negatively of Winston. I’m sick of the negativity based on a false narrative of this kid. He’s made some bad decisions to be sure – but the negative perceptions based on mostly on falsehoods and especially the outright slander against Jameis that occurs everyday here on this very website by ignorant commentors just gets very, very old.

  24. knuckledragger Says:

  27. Luther Says:

    @knuckledragger

I have never trusted Gruden’s opinion about QB’s. He loves Winston too and I’ve never posted anything remotely praising it. He tried to replace Garcia and Brad Johnson and they were the most successful QB’s he had here. He also passed on Rodgers so his opinion means nothing. I do however love to watch his QB show because he does good things with them. I just don’t listen to his final analysis.

There’s still a court case involving the investigation. An Active case. A chance that Jameis gets pulled back in. What if we take him and he gets pulled back in? You don’t think that affects our team? My guess is he’s innocent. But don’t think for a second that it’s over. If it wasn’t for this I would want him on our team. This movie is a PR nightmare for him and the activist groups have timed it perfectly. Just like Peterson they won’t let it go. This negative media attention isn’t good. Expect more of these type of articles between now and the draft.

CAN’t WE just Talk about what IS instead of what might have been.
And as a disclaimer I am Not a Winston supporter.

  34. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

Jameis Winston is absolutely 100% not getting drafted by the Bucs at #1. Anyone who thinks otherwise (including analysts) is out of their minds. And I don’t hate Winston; I just like Mariota alot more)…. In the world of public relations, Perception rules the day. Embrace Mariota, guys, because he will be our new QB. You can take that to the bank.

  35. SuperSam Says:

Winston has some skills to be a decent quarterback, but its looking more and more like there is just to much on Winstons plate for Lovie and Licht to stomach. First the off the field garbage “immaturity”, then the shoulder stuff, now he wants to play baseball too, what next? No prospect is worth this much trouble I don’t care how great he can run a pro style offense.

  36. SAMCRO Says:

That settles it. If I were the Glazers, I would hire a hypnotist, and during their Q&A session with Winston put him under hypnosis. Then ask him that one most important question that everyone is dying to know?

Are you going to play baseball too? lol

  37. Eric Says:

Its pretty typical for a Winston article.the author obviously has done zero research and knows little about sexual battery cases.

Hundreds if not thousands of pages are readily available concerning the incident I feel sure the bucs have reviewed them already. There are statements in her own writing.

This guy acts as if it is something new. Case is from 2012.

Same story that no one found credible because her version changes every time she tells it
and differs from what her own friends say happened.

Never charged. No finding of a conduct violation.

  38. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

Wish they’d hypnotize Lovie to figure out what the hell he was thinking signing “The Ghost,” Josh McCown and Anthony Collins.

  40. SuperSam Says:

And there are conflicting reports on the shoulder, some say its nothing, others say it could be a serious long term problem. That’s a big gamble for ” The most important pick in franchise history”.

  41. knuckledragger Says:

JOE………Since you are here please answer my question of why Sometimes my name is Red and mostly Black.

  42. Adamant Says:

Erik – so glad that you have the confirmed choice due to your inside knowledge of the Bucs draft board. Impressive. Wait, you are clueless. Idiot.

  43. iamkingsu Says:

I wish some of you stop talking about this bumb Mariota smh. I saw him play live he has no qb feel. I mean he’s faster than the time he ran at the combine when he plays on a football field. If that’s what you’ll want as a qb I guess to each his own I

  44. White Tiger Says:

C’mon…talk about generating clicks…this is just story one in the push back towards Mariota. By the end, none of the original pro-Kid Fameis crowd, nor any of the original pro-Mariota crowd, will be swayed by any of the propaganda being strewn about the interwebs or print media.

…now, some in the middle, you will start put favoring one, then swayed to the other, and by the end…none of you will care which QB gets picked – or possibly some of you will be so sick of another 60 days of this…that you’ll simply prefer the guy with the least amount of drama (I can understand that sentiment).

I am an original Mariota backer – but because I am of the belief that on a purely technical/practical basis – we’re going to acknowledge that the volume of talent no longer is coming out of college with even a BASIC understanding of a “pro-style” offense, or the requirements of their position as it translates to an NFL “pro-style” offense. Several teams have converted to a spread-heavy/wco hybrid – acknowledging that it’s becoming too expensive to force these draftee’s into an NFL pro-style role – and deciding instead to change the NFL to fit the players.

So this story is not resonating with me – I’m not sure if there is anything to it – and I don’t know which party is lying, nor do I care anymore. My mind was made up, this is designed to only cause doubt amongst the faithful, which I have never been.

  45. Pickgrin Says:

OMG – how are some you ever going to live this down since you have dug your anti-Winston holes so deep.

  46. Eric Says:

The case against the university is a titleIX action.

No way for jameis to get “pulled in” to that.

Im sure the bucs have a strong legal team and any first year law student can see she has no chance of winning it. The University President has documented 20 occassions where they. Tried to contact the girl and she did not cooperate.

And she has no damages because she lost the student conduct hearing before the Supreme Court Justice where she was given every opportunity to prove her claim, with counsel.

    That case is going nowhere.

  47. RastaMon Says:

The Glazers will not allow Jameis as the Bucs 1st pick….

  48. knuckledragger Says:

Damn you Joe for not answering me unless I don’t want you to.

  49. Eric Says:

Had we had hypnotized the rock star to drive far out of town six years ago we wouldn’t be in this horrific mess now.

    Go Lovie.

  50. chris k Says:

Gruden, Dungy, Jim Mora, and Chip Kelly.. What do they all have in common?? That’s right!! NFL MEN IN THE KNOW!!!! Those so called experts are being lazy and basically copycatting each others notes. How many times are we gonna hear the term “NFL READY”?? NFL personal and coaches wanna know the following from a rookie.. 1) is the player coachable? 2) does he have a high ceiling? 3) is he gonna give all his energy and time on mastering his craft?

Did we see Winston shout at his coaches during the Oregon game? Did we see Jimbo Fisher threaten to bench his ass if he didn’t do things his way? Do we know Winston is done with baseball and 100% committed to football? Does Winston have high character?

Brainwash all you want and Winston supporters keep calling Mariota backers stupid. At this point it doesn’t matter. But recognize this, when America was polled on ESPN who would they rather have as their QB it was a landslide in favor of Mariota! Landslide!! Not even close!! Only here in Florida are we finding this 50/50 split (excluding this site) Let me finish by saying I know Winston can sling it! I know Winston can grow up! I know he is smart on the whiteboard!! It’s time for all the Winston jock sniffers and FSU apoligist to acknowledge that Mariota can also do it all without all the baggage and all the diva crap. Winston carries the greater risk end of conversation. He might become a better pro, but he might not, but he is without a doubt the bigger risk whether Winston lovers will ever admit that or not. I’ll put my faith that the NFL men we have making the decision will do what they feel is best for the organization, and in the end I will support whoever they pick. I’m a fan 1st… All you Winston jock sniffers should try and open up your minds for just a minute and know that when it comes to this pick anything is possible..

  51. Skyline Crew Says:

Why are you surprised. You knew Winston was going to get bad publicity. This is only the beginning. Wait until he is drafted.

  52. Skyline Crew Says:

“The state attorney’s office wasn’t notified of the allegation until 11 months after the incident, and state attorney Willie Meggs concedes in the film that he believes something “bad” happened at Winston’s apartment, but that insufficient proof prevented a prosecution.”

  53. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

Here’s what good ‘ol Jason Licht said Jameis Winston:

“But I’d be lying if I said I don’t spend a lot of time thinking about the off-field stuff,” he said. “It’s always in the back of your mind. We’re people too. We have wives and daughters and bosses to answer to. And at the end of the day we will do the kind of due diligence the likes of which I don’t believe the Bucs will have ever done. This decision is going to affect so many people and their families. We’ve got to get it right.”

    HMMMM…

SOUNDS LIKE “CAUTIOUS OPTIMISM” TO ME.

As TBBF would say, “Tokyo Joes”.

  54. Greg Says:

The civil suit will not go away until it is settled one way or another. The previous exonerations of Mr. Winston for the charges are very different in what is charged in a civil case. There will be many sleepless nights by the Bucs brain trust weighing the benefit/risks to taking Mr. Winston and Mr. Marriota with the first pick. It is a choice that will affect the future employment of Lovie and Licht so we will see…

  55. Senor Mofo Says:

The only diff is he has done it at a high level whereas we have not.
You can’t really criticize properly unless you have a better understanding of what you are criticizing said person of. That is just my opinion though.

  63. Jb Says:

Posey99…. You do realize someone like Manning had a sexual harassment charge that didn’t get settled until years after he was in the league? That does not make him guilty. And this lawsuit against winston is not “pending.” They’ve threatened with a lawsuit but have not moved forward. Yes they are trying to sue the school still, and looking for money. That couldn’t be more obvious.

Winston’s lawyers have made it clear that if sued they will counter sue. There are public documents that the accuser seeked money twice. Her suing is solely for the fact that she is hoping to get money.

  64. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

It baffles me how some people attempt to twist WORDS. Sure, anybody, and I mean anybody, can twist numbers to suit their arguments. Hell, people have been doing it here every single day since Winston and Mariota declared for the NFL Draft. But twisting words is a bit more tricky.

Talking about how you think of somebody’s off-field issues in your spare time and then going on to stress the importance of picking the right guy because of the people around you, to me, fits right under the category of “cautiously optimistic”.

  68. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

Pickgrin, I feel the exact same way about the Winston supporters….. Don’t worry, guys, Mariota will win you over eventually when he is efficiently running the offense from Week 1. I’m calling it now. Remember this during the season when he looks like he could possibly be the greatest Bucs QB ever.

todd mcshay mock draft 3.0 2/26

#1 Jameis Winston Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-14)
“Analysis: I’d be very surprised if the Bucs didn’t take a quarterback at No. 1, and both Winston and Mariota are possibilities here. But to me, Winston has a clear advantage over Mariota based on his on-field performance. He is such a natural passer in terms of his ability to anticipate throws and deliver the ball accurately, and, to me, if you limit it to an on-field evaluation, he’s second only to Andrew Luck among QB prospects of the past 10 years. Tampa Bay will have to be comfortable with its character and psychological evaluations of Winston before drafting him No. 1 overall, but from what I’ve heard, Winston really impressed teams during his combine interview sessions with how he talked about his past, and he wowed them with his football IQ. Mariota possesses great physical tools and very good character and football intelligence, and I think he has the potential to develop into a good NFL starter. But to me, Winston is both more advanced now and has the higher ceiling when projecting the future.”

marcus mariota goes #6 to nyjets

  79. knuckledragger Says:

As far as I can see Joe is carrying his bias to new heights. I WANT a qb for us. I just dont think that using a no. 1 pick in the draft on a QB is going to make a difference with such a weak foundation in our team. Foundations are in the lines. We have ONE player in EITHER TRENCH that is Elite or even above average

  80. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

    Luther,

The overall point is that the Bucs are not going to bring a guy onto our franchise that is actively & consistently attracting bad press; even if it has been awhile since he’s done something silly. If this story would stay in the past, the Winston supporters might have a slight chance. But, if it is a current pop culture thing, the Bucs will stay far away from it. Trust that.

  81. lurker Says:

you can like the second-best qb prospect this year, i will take mr. winston #1.

YUP…………………………JOE has me wrongfully classified as an Anti WInstonite as he does you Eric

  83. knuckledragger Says:

I guess WE ARE THE RED.

  84. tmaxcon Says:

Winston is the only logical pick for the bucs. Lovie and the Bucs need a Winner like Winston far more than Winston needs losers like Lovie and the Bucs. For the 8 or 10 hypocrites who cry all day long on here you will get used to winston. buy his jersey and celebrate his wins while lying to your friends how you have supported him from day one during the super bowl parade winston is leading. write it down…

  85. lurker Says:

“I just dont think that using a no. 1 pick in the draft on a QB is going to make a difference with such a weak foundation in our team.”

    and mike sando disagrees:

How Tampa Bay can bounce back
Buccaneers could turn things around with Winston as No. 1 pick

    1. There is precedent for significant offensive improvement with a quarterback drafted first overall.

    2. Dirk Koetter’s addition represents the greatest coordinator upgrade in the league this season.

    3. The schedule could be much more favorable for the Buccaneers this season.

    4. Lovie Smith’s track record has to count for something.

(obviously it is more in depth but behind a pay wall)

  86. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

If we did actually draft Winston, I would support him and hope that he has success. But, I don’t see it happening. I truly believe that Mariota is the obvious choice at this point.

  87. lurker Says:

red has nothing to do with winston affiliation…

but it is funny how you just blast pro-winstonites, knucklegragger.

  88. iamkingsu Says:

I’ve been saying winston is better than Luck was coming out of Stanford. Its just tickles me how everyone want to put him right behind Luck. Shoutout to mooch for at least giving jameis his full due for his knowledge of the game by saying he was the smartesr “ever”

  89. lurker Says:

mariota is the choice for the jets, eagles, maybe rams.

    Posey99 Says
“That’s why Lovie and Licht kept saying “so far what we know” “with the information we have right now” etc. that IS cautious optimism. WAKEUP!”

    NAILED IT.

  91. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Unfortunately, I saw this coming. It’s not a surprise and there will be more. It simply the nature of the 24/7/365 Cable/Internet media thirst for salacious material.

The Bucs & Winston will continue to have PR problems with this. It’s unfortunate and there isn’t much that can be done. When there is resistance and denial, it simply magnifies the problem. Ignoring it is difficult and tricky….

If the Bucs do decide to go with Winston, they will mount a PR campaign for him the likes of which you have never seen with a Bucs player.

  92. WS99 Says:

Winston slip to the second round and we draft them both. YES!

Winston ends up winning qb and Marriota becomes our #3 rcv bc of his outstanding athleticism.

  93. Afbagli Says:

I love how she completely changes her story in the docunebtary

  94. Senor Mofo Says:

Here’s the situational completion percentage for both QBs, according to ESPN Stats & Information:

    Mariota overall: 68.3
    Winston overall: 65.3

    Mariota inside the pocket: 72.2
    Winston inside the pocket: 66.2

Mariota 15 yards or more: 54.4
Winston 15 yards or more: 43.6

Mariota from shotgun or pistol: 68.2
Winston from shotgun or pistol: 64.9

    Mariota when blitzed: 71.6
    Winston when blitzed: 63.2

Mariota’s numbers look better across the board, even though Winston’s numbers are still good. I know, I know, Mariota only made “easy throws” to “wide open receivers” blah blah, and of course the Winstonistas can respond with any number of qualifiers to explain why Mariota’s numbers are pure fool’s gold and Winston is still the better passer.

Just food for thought. The debate, as usual, rages on.

  95. Afbagli Says:

Her lawyer really wants that $10 million she’s been asking for

  100. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Joe, not long ago you made the claim that the Buvs need drama. THIS is the sort of drama you will get with Winston.

If you believe it will stop after the draft, you are wrong. Your peers in the press will leap on every chance to rag on Winston…and it will always reflect poorly on the team that drafts him. Especially when he is included in a civil suit.

But hey, jut like Freeman, just like MRSA, drama is “good” right?

  101. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Excuse the typos. Tablet.

  102. iamkingsu Says:

    @senor mofo

  108. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

As I was listening to dawg today, who seemed to be in the middle of a spat with Joe, I was delighted that my own thoughts were echoed by a couple callers, including the morality issue.

If the Bucs draft Winston, I will try to be “cautiously optimistic”, but I fully expect contoversy to rear it’s ugly head.

I suspect the MGM would grow in size by game 4.

  109. lurker Says:

    lemon, it’s in mike glennon!

  110. Tampabaybucfan Says:

This is a distraction and distractions are not good….sure they can be overcome, but teams are far better off if they are free to focus on Football…..

It may not keep the Bucs from drafting Winston but it won’t go away for quite some time.

  111. Tampabaybucfan Says:

If we think some Buc fans will have difficulty with Winston…..imagine how opposing team fans will react……sure, why should we care what opponents think….but, it’s just another PR nightmare rearing it’s ugly head perahps at most away games.

Not sure anyone has raised that point…..when you look at national opinion polls on the twe QBs Mariota dominates….sure, it’s meaningless…..on the field…..but media will focus on the negative when given the opportunity.

  112. Armando Says:

She said she was at a party, where she was hit in the head, knocked out and raped.

The truth: She and her friends met Jameis and his friends at Potbelly’s, a local club. She went back to Jameis’s apartment with him. There were witnesses.

She said accused was 5’11 – 6’1 black man and didn’t know who he was
Jameis is 6’4 and they had already met.

She said she was drugged (rufies?) and drunk.
Toxicology reports show no drugs, and minimal alcohol.

    She said she was raped.
    Rape kit says otherwise.

She said she had sex with no one else that day.
The truth: Two semen samples were found on her panties.

She asked her friend to say that the panties were hers (hers, being her friend’s)

She said she did not have a boyfriend.

The truth: She did; another athlete in another town. The second semen sample belonged to him.

Her aunt/attorney said she would never willingly sleep with Jameis because she doesn’t date “black boys.”

The truth: her boyfriend was black.

There were two witnesses to the consensual sex. Jameis’s roommates. They walked in on Jameis and her. She was on top (hardly a position of submission) and yelled: “Get the fuck out!”

She waited TWENTY months to file a title IX complaint.

And people wonder why Tally PD or the State DA or the FSU Board of Review didn’t think this was worth their time

Unplug the phone and DRAFT WINSTON.

  113. Yungry Says:

Better on and off the field, period… We don’t need a circus like NYJ or Dallas…

  114. Senor Mofo Says:

Lots of QBs have been drafted in the first round. Some have had issues, some have been clean as a whistle. Some have succeeded, many have failed, and a few have become elite.

Fans can debate, the media can debate, scouts and analysts can debate.

But this will still be an organizational decision, and will still be based on:

    1. The Buccaneers’ full and fair evaluation of the prospects.
    2. The Buccaneers’ long-term vision for the franchise.

There will be smokescreens, trade rumors, distractions, wild speculation, and frequent changes of opinion.

But unless something significant happens between now and April 30, we likely will not know who the pick is going to be until Roger Goodell steps up to the podium and says “With the first overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select . . .”

  115. Jeagan1999 Says:

i never really knew much about the actual details surrounding Winston and the investigation into the rape incident, pretty much just what I had heard and seen on the news and on the radio, but the more I read now, the more troubled I become. After reading this NYTimes article, I have serious questions about whether it’s wise to hitch our wagon to him. Was the rape allegation actually thoroughly investigated, or was Winston sheltered because of who he is? Now I’m not sure what to believe!

I believe most of the Mocks think Bucs/Lovie are desperate for “win-now” NFL ready…….and I think they are dead wrong on that point.

A lot of Winstonistas are disturbed because the New York Times is apparently more skilled at investigation than the Tallahassee Police Department.

And they should be disturbed. Because if Winston had done nothing wrong, and if the Tallahassee Police had conducted a thorough investigation, as they are beholden to the taxpayers to do, this wouldn’t even be a story.

Ah, but it remains a story.

And even if it all boiled down to nothing more than Winston simply having his friends videotape a consensual sexual encounter between himself and his accuser, it still speaks to his narcissistic, arrogant, “look at me” personality. It is still a character concern.

Winston is a powder keg. He’s volatile, and he could blow up in this team’s face at any point.

Lovie didn’t even want to be on “Hard Knocks.” Why would he openly invite the relentless public and media scrutiny that will follow the drafting of Jameis Winston?

  133. Jeagan1999 Says:

Lurker….thanks for the link to the story. It’s interesting, and it does raise some interesting points…but there is also a fair amount of assumptions and interpretations that I don’t know stand up to scrutiny. Besides Winston, the girl and his roommates…I don’t know if anyone else will ever know for sure the full story of what happened in that apartment that night. I suppose as in most “he said, she said” situations there will be people on both sides that believe their own interpretations of what really went on. One thing is for sure…this story will be around for a while. I just hope that if we do take Winston, it doesn’t turn out to be a huge distraction.

  134. lurker Says:

and erica kinsman’s attorney (aunt) patricia cornwell tried to extort $7 million from jameis winston and wanted an insurance policy on him in case of injury. but money is not the motive, huh?

where is the nytimes detective work then?

  135. lurker Says:

that is your evaluation of his character senior mofo. he is confident and brash. players want that. sorry you are not confident and try to condemn people who are and consider that a negative…lmao

funny how people think it is cocky as a negative and that it will hinder his interviews with coaches and gm’s…but that is not what happened. he was great in all his interviews. so the anti-winstonites were wrong again.

Most people have only even known about Jameis Winston for two years. If you are willing to chalk everything that has surfaced about him during that brief period to nothing more than immaturity and naivete, then you are the one who is naive.

The Buccaneers cannot wave a magic wand and make his personality issues disappear.

I’m outside the U.S. right now, but I think that documentary opens in New York and L. A., the country’s largest media markets, tomorrow, right?

When half of your own campus, and most of the country, is wondering if you might be an outright rapist, you don’t jump up on a table and yell what he did.

    —————————————————————-
Well once again – a negative opinion of Winston is accompanied by ignorance of as well as mis-statement of the known facts.

The NYT article is a flat out hit piece. It intentionally leaves out key pieces of known evidence that exonerate Winston while telling the story of what supposedly happened – because it doesn’t fit their false narrative. There is too much to go into by trying to list here w/ supporting info and evidence – but suffice to say that the NYT has compromised their journalistic integrity in this case and opted instead for sensationalism.

Regarding Winston “having his friends videotape a consensual sexual encounter” – Winston had nothing to do with that. Winston’s roommate took some video with his phone of Jameis and Erica having sex without anyone’s permission. Winston’s door was broken and would not close properly or lock and Winston’s roommate and friend were outside his room messing with them while they were trying to have privacy. This included taking some video of what they were doing through the cracked door and he later walked in on them as well. While very uncool and childish – this was how Winston’s friends knew that the encounter was consensual. because they saw what happened. This included Erica going down on Winston before they started having sex as well as her being on top of him while having sex.

Additionally I have seen people say – well then why did Winston erase the very video that would have proved his innocence? The answer is that Winston DIDN’T erase the video. His friend and fellow football player Chris erased the video that he took on his phone 2 days later. Probably because it was illegal for him to have done what he did without permission from Winston and Erica.

  148. Senor Mofo Says:

    @Pickgrin

Winston’s rape allegation, in and of itself, and the media treatment of that allegation, are not going to make or break whether or not we draft Winston.

The Buccaneers’ private investigators will likely do a more thorough job, unfortunately, than the Tallahassee PD, and hopefully a better job than any media outlet.

But the possibility of continued public scrutiny, backlash, and distraction over that allegation is a factor. And it will continue.

Lovie has been burned by guys with issues. This franchise has been burned by guys with issues. No one will forget those past experiences in this evaluation process.

It’s the number one pick we’re talking about. Sure, talent trumps all else in the NFL, but both of these guys have elite talent. Some people’s idea that Winston’s off-field issues will be casually and summarily dismissed is absurd.

Well then I’m pretty sure the Bucs already have every bit as much info as the FBI and the DOJ have about the case and the “cover up”.

I don’t think anything else is going to come up with this kid the rest of way.

    Good night JBF”s.

  156. Senor Mofo Says:

    @lurker Says:

well, context says he will be drafted in the top 5, no matter what you say or believe.

sorry you feel the need to condemn a young man who has a had life experiences that will not jeopardize his draft status. it is a shame the lies, defamation, and extortion that mr. winston is facing.

    ================================================

Of course he will be drafted in the top five. That was my whole point about his lack of judgment.

Winston has elite talent, and he knows it. But he hasn’t let that sink in, because his behavior suggests that either he thinks he’s above it all, and thinks he can get away with anything because all will be forgiven, or he just doesn’t care one way or the other, and maybe he’ll get serious later, when he’s ready to get serious.

You know, at just the right time.

  157. Senor Mofo Says:

I’m sure a lot of you have been to amusement parks, and ridden roller coasters. I’m sure a lot of you also have nieces or nephews, or sons or daughters.

Here in Mexico City, Six Flags has a boomerang-style coaster, as they have at many of their parks. I have a little niece that loves these boomerang coasters.

The other day, I was thinking two things:

    1. Who would I trust, between Mariota and Winston, to take my niece to Six Flags? and;

    2. Who would I trust, between Mariota and Winston, to accurately complete a pass to her from the ground as that boomerang coaster made its outside swing on the second loop?

In both cases, Mariota was the answer.

Winston will have a roller coaster career, and picking him number one will come back and hit you in the face like a boomerang. And you damn sure ain’t gonna trust him with your niece.

  158. lurker Says:

    that is just silly.

winston has way better quarterbacking skills than mariota. smh

it would be best to get your niece away from the drug cartels that plague the country, including mexico city.

see, i can say silly things too, doesn’t make it a good opinion.

  159. Senor Mofo Says:

    @lurker

Winston has a bigger arm than Mariota. Winston makes better anticipation throws.

    That’s it.

In almost all other categories of QB evaluation, I’m taking Mariota.

Mariota makes quicker decisions, has a cleaner delivery, quicker release, and overall better accuracy. He’s by far the better athlete, and has no off-field issues.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have no installed offense at the moment. They have positioned themselves to select either guy.

I don’t even buy the stupid “win-now” argument. Because no team that has the first pick is in a position to “win now”. If they were, they wouldn’t have that pick.

Winston is a prototypical drop-back passer. That is the limit of his skill set. He’s good, and he’s better than we’ve ever had, but that is his limit.

For Winston to win early in his NFL career, he has to play at a superior level in an average offense.

Mariota can win by using his athleticism and passing accuracy and playing at his average level in a dynamic scheme.

We are in a position to craft our offense around either guy. So, do we craft an average offense and hope Winston lights it up? Or, do we actually get innovative and creative for once in 40 years, knowing that Mariota can run that offense effectively on his worst day, and then watch as we get better and better?

  160. lurker Says:

wow, then you disagree with most experts, including todd mcshay who has winston as the best qb prospect since luck. winston has higher football iq, better arm, doesn’t get hurt, makes throws with men in his face or draped on him, better accuracy. the only thing hindering winston is some off-the-field decisions.

mariota needs a specific system. we do not have the receivers to run that system. koetter has never run that system in college or the pro’s. mariota runs fast but gets sacked a ton.

your opinion is that the prostyle is an average offense…silly. you just say things to try and fit your beliefs. you take the better qb, that is winston. wilson made a bad pass that cost them the superbowl. that is what a spread qb does.

  161. Senor Mofo Says:

    @lurker

Todd McShay’s credentials include being an intern to a scout for a year and then declaring himself a football analyst for a start-up publication. Just because you’ve heard his name a lot doesn’t make him an expert.

In fact, there are no “experts.” Draft picks are hit-or-miss more often than not, no matter how high they are selected.

This pick is a long-term football and business decision for the Glazers. They might get it right, they might get it wrong.

From a talent perspective, I don’t think you can go wrong with either guy. From a business perspective, you can go very wrong here.

  162. P'cola Buc Says:

Not sure if it means anything that I believe that Chase Goodbread just so happens to have worked as a reporter covering the Crimson Tide and lives in that area.

  163. Nybucsfan Says:

Really JOE Jason didn’t say his off the field stuff is always in the back of my mind we all have daughter and wife’s. Is that expressing cation. It’s just starting joe get use to it.

  164. Kingpin1 Says:

It a he said she said case it’s who you Want to believe. It needs to be dropped!!! He was found innocent. Just because the girl keeps saying she was raped doesn’t mean she was. So all you idiots who want to believe she wasjust because she is a girl and calls herself a rape victim with no evidence then go ahead but you are all foolish. Also Winston seems really worried doesn’t he? No he doesn’t because he knows the truth.

  165. Phil Says:

The girl wasn’t a rape victim she a dummy trying to scam a buck and she needs to go crawl in the hole she came from.

  166. BarrydestroyedTheEvidence Says:

    ^^^^^^

CANT WE ALL JUST GET ALONG ?

  167. JVNootz Says:

Jameis was NOT CLEARED of wrongdoing. They simply did not have enough evidence to do proceed. Big difference i n “cleared” and “not enough evidence”. Part of the issue in the lack of evidence was due to all parties involved in clearing the case. The PD grossly mishandled the case as did FSU who wanted to sweep this under the rug or at the very least, leave it on the back burner until their championship run was done.

As a matter of fact the ONLY thing ” clear” about this case was Winston’s support by PD and FSU in trying to cover and prolong this case as long as they could. Ironic you fault the article in question for stretching the truth, yet Joe tries to stretch the truth in a different direction.

  168. BK Says:

I expect all these blind Winston fans to fully support Mariota after he is selected. Lurker I expect you and some of the other FSU bandwagon to be at front of line. If we do pick him oh what a fun Summer in Civil court it will be for Winston. I expect him to settle out of court to minimize because of course he is not guilty of anything.

  169. JVNootz Says:

As I’ve stated before, the problem is not with INDIVIDUAL things Jameis did (soda, bb guns, crab legs, obscenity in public etc.) The issues TOGETHER, creating a pattern are the bigger issue here. He continued to misstep all while already having a bright spotlight on him. The pro Winston guys who continue to defend him chalk up the individual events to “kids being kids”, but the reality is, if this was a friend of your own child, you wouldnt want your child associating with a kid who is constantly getting in trouble. You can pretend you would be okay with it, but you’re lying to yourself.

A person with this pattern of behavior is not going to cease this behavior overnight.

  170. JVNootz Says:

    @lurker,

Our receivers do not need a “specific system” nor do they have to “fit with Mariota.Evans and VJax BOTH had 1000 yard seasons with JOSH MCCOWN throwing them the ball in a system that was mainly *sack* *incomplete*heave it up* sack* fumble* INTERCEPTION* SACK*HEAVE IT UP* SACK*

I’m pretty sure both WRs will still strive in the new offense with a coordinator who is very familiar with having two talented WRs. Mariota would be a HUGE upgrade from McCown and would protect the ball much better.

  171. Barry Says:

A young girl has accused Jameis Winston of a rape. A very serious crime.

“He was on top of me and I couldn’t really breathe,” Kinsman says, noting Winston’s roommate disrupted Winston’s first attempt when he entered his bedroom because the door didn’t lock. She said the roommate, who she does not identify, pleaded with Winston to stop and noted Klinsman was saying “no.” That’s when Kinsman said Winston picked her up and took her to the bathroom, where the door did lock.
“He pushed his hand over my face and pushed my face to the floor,” she said, recalling the floor was tile. She said he dressed her and told her it was time to leave after he was done.

  172. biff barker Says:

The Bucs have a choice between hiring a galvanizing figure or a polarizing figure as the face of the franchise.

    Simple as that.

  173. SoonerinTampa Says:

Keep bangin the Winston articles Joe…it drives traffic and hate!!

It’s all about the clicks and the $$$$$$$$$$

  174. Mariota Joe Says:

Joe, there’s a HUGE difference between “confidence” and “certainty”. And certainly there is no certainty about Jameis.

  175. lurker Says:

i am in no fsu bandwagon. i could give 2 shi*s about florida or florida state.
you can want the second-best qb prospect, i will take mr. winston #1 and win more games then with marcus mediocre.

    Joe,
First – this I’m not sure if this is exclusive to me but this sight has been lagging and frequently crashes on me from multiple devices from multiple sights (PC, iPhone, MacBookPro’s)mainly Safari and Chrome. All at different locations and my internet speed is top notch – client side is clean.

Ok, onto Winston. First I went to UF – so lets all bear that in mind. However, I have to stick up for this kid. First, I don’t care what ANY lawyer says – the case is over. Lawyers are well, lawyers – they say what they need to say to defend their clients/case (on both sides) and at times they can be sore losers. However, bottom line it’s over. Unfortunately for JW, we have 2 months to perseverate this issue and watch some documentary on it. If he was already playing football and winning (and acquitted) this would be just like the Ray Lewis issue save for the fact nobody died. Most people would probably forget in a few weeks and just care about the next few games – just being real. Also regard all the stupid behavior problems in college. This ones quick. I’m a fairly successful, my friends are too, my brothers stupid successful and ALL of them did stupid stuff in college. However, we did make it on TV…thanks God. Granted he was in a position where he was in a quasi-reality show – but was still just a college kid like most of the rest of us. I’m sure MM had his unadvertised moments.

  179. Bruno Says:

    Correction – *Didn’t make it on TV…

  180. Joe Says:

That’s odd. Joe uses several devices, too. iPad (Safari and Chrome), Android phone, Chrome. No issues like that. Thanks for the tip.

  181. Bucs Fan Since '76 Says:

Here is my take as a former prosecutor and criminal defense attorney – Jameis had sex with a drunk young lady he’d met for the first time earlier the same evening at a bar. The sexual encounter was not romantic. His roommates acted like disrespectful jerks. She sobers up and feels embarrassed and used. She also rightfully felt regrets and probably disgust at her own behavior. She was clearly used and treated disrespectfully.

However, the evidence does not prove a criminal sexual assault. Even her own varying accounts create too much doubt to prosecute Winston. He did not get her drunk, and did not drug her. On the contrary, there is no evidence of any drugs in her system. And her blood alcohol level was not that high, even if you extrapolate it back to the time of the encounter it would not indicate extreme intoxication.

All that can be gleaned from the police reports and SAO Memo is that a group of college kids – men and women – acted recklessly, stupidly, and disrespectfully, toward themselves and each other. This is precisely the type of behavior we should teach our sons and daughters is bad and dangerous. I have taught my own son to treat women with the utmost care and respect. I’ve taught my daughters to treat themselves with the utmost care and respect. You can only pray they’ve listened and learned.

  182. Vico Says:

This sounds like Joe knows that an aggressive (and national) campaign on Winston will end up with this website losing its QB of choice (for the second straight year). Last year I was on board with drafting JF… I still don’t know if him coming to Tampa would play out differently than him going to rehab at the end of the season. But I’m sure I’m glad we have Evans. Whom wasn’t the best prospect, or anything like that, not even the first WR drafted. So because of this (and plenty of bad decisions drafting DE’s) I really hope we end up with Mariota joining the Bucs.

  183. Bucsfanman Says:

    ^
@’76-Thank you! That was the best statement I have heard on the subject yet. I do not dislike Jameis for who he is, I simply don’t respect him. We are all young once, I get that. It still does not excuse this behavior, regardless of the circumstances.
Frankly, I don’t know how anyone can say one guy is better than the other at this point. Given our O-line however, it might pay to be more athletic!

  184. passthebuc Says:

    All lies in jest
still, a man hears what he wants to here
    and will justify the rest.

If you think this story is going away, think again.
If Winston becomes a Buc, and you thinks this will not become a major distraction for a few years, think again.

  185. Bucs fan in Chicago Says:

The political left is pushing hard to promote their template that college campuses are dangerous places for women. The Winston story fits their narrative. Makes me like him more. So tired of the left wing media!

  186. Bucs fan in Chicago Says:

    “him” being Winston.

  187. lurker Says:

    silly republicant

  188. Rick Says:

Just the fact Joe, the NFL and all the commenters on this website are spending so much “ink” on this is why the Bucs should go with Mariotta. Regardless of the facts of any of the rape allegations or any of Winston’s other antics, he’s a distraction. And, a young Buccaneer team that is just beginning to get its feet underneath it doesn’t need these sorts of distractions.

  189. lurker Says:

but they need a cause to rally around!
