Jameis Watch: “Biggest Riser”

Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, former national champion Jameis Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon and Josh McCown.
It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback ever to wear No. 5 in the state of Florida.
Who was the big winner at the NFL Scouting Combine? Could it possibly have been Jameis Winston, who already was considered a potential No. 1 overall pick?
Yahoo! Sports draft guru Shaun King, the former Bucs quarterback, says it was.
King cited Winston impressing at all levels of evaluation and called Winston’s combine “outstanding in every aspect,” including in interpersonal relations with team and media.
“For me, he was the biggest riser,” King said, “because he put to rest a lot of the negative perceptions that were out there about him as a person.”
While it may see trivial to some, a quarterback’s handling of media is important. The NFL mandates quarterbacks devote time for twice weekly media grilling sessions during the season, and the general face-of-franchise public duties are inevitable. It simply can’t be avoided in the modern NFL.
Comfort in front of media is no reason to draft a QB, but a guy who struggles and crumbles under scrutiny would raise a red flag.

I’m curious to see what will happen when “The Hunting Ground” is released (documentary exploring sexual assault on college campuses). It features Winston’s accuser, who discusses the incident in detail in the film. When this issue gets thrust back into the national spotlight, I wouldn’t be surprised if people start having doubts about Winston going number 1.

King is right that Winston raised his stock even though he was already widely slated as the #1 pick.
Gotta give it to the kid. Most QBs who are already slotted at #1 wouldn’t even consider throwing at the combine. Jameis was not afraid to lay his skills on the line and risk having an off day. Instead he killed it. Made every throw just look so effortless. Proved yet again on the field that his confidence and swagger ain’t just talk.
Winston was the WOW factor at the combine – as in coaches and GMs who haven’t seen as much tape as their scouts saying to each other – “WOW – this kid’s really got it. He’s the real deal on the field.”
The other important thing Winston did was show via interviews and the press conference that he has charisma. That he is a real person. A genuine person who is funny, engaging, confident and comfortable in his own skin. He instilled faith that – YES – this guy can stand up in front of cameras and the press twice a week every week and represent our franchise in a positive way.
Combine all that with the short look video of Winston’s white board session with Mooch -and I would say Yea – Jameis definitely killed it at the combine.
Mariota raised his stock as well. Kudos to him for also throwing and doing quite well. We already knew he would run a very fast 40 – but then he went out and did it – so its just another check off the list.
Seeing these 2 perform as they did – certainly did wonders for Bucs fans confidence. We now all know if any of us didn’t before – that whatever happens in this draft short of a trade down which ain’t happening – The Buccaneers are finally gonna get a very legitimate franchise QB prospect. Both these guys are gonna be good in the NFL if the team that gets them handles it right. Feels good to know that doesn’t it?
I want Winston to be our new QB. But if for some reason the pick is Mariota – I ain’t gonna be crying about it. I hope those who prefer Mariota can come to the same conclusion and viewpoint.

He has been compared to Byron Leftwich who Koetter is familiar with. I don’t think Winston’s combine numbers did anything to dispel that comparison.

There are already doubts about Mariota. What will his learning curve be?
He was quiet, reserved unsure of what to say at the NFL Network interview table sitting next to Winston. Winston was making the commentators feel relaxed, smiling as he engaged in conversation with them. Mariota himself was concerned of how he will handle his responsibilties in the huddle. Will Mariota be able to overcome his natural reserved demeanor? Will he translate to a leader encouraging his troops? Will he become bothered easily by the signs of his opponents intimidations? Will he find his voice? Just saying… many are also having doubts about Mariota worthy of going number one as well.

I won a most improved award once…..I was excited about it initially until I realized that I had come the farthest because I had the most room to improve.
I believe that Winston did very well….but “riser” means the bar was set pretty low for him. I believe most expected Mariota to do well so…how does he rise?
Imagine what would have happened if Marita ran a 6.5 40? He had much to lose if he didn’t perform up to expectations.

The “Hunting Ground” should tell you everything about the Rapist Winston you need to know! I might scream if someone utters one more time that he was found to be innocent….if he had been in Pinellas County he would be doing 25 years! Rapist State University covered this up as did Winston…this film is the second video….Winston and the two animals who were standing their watching him “have consensual” sex with that female student while video taping the whole assault is the second video. All Winston had to do was provide the video to the Police and to the University. We would have NO conversation about this rape because the video would prove beyond “a reasonable doubt” in front of a jury….not (I can’t make a decision because it was he said/she said) as in the Title IX Hearing.
I guarantee you if she says NO, then you go to jail. Why destroy the video?? I know the Buc’s need a QB and I know the Rapist is the most Pro Style ready, but he is just not worth the risk. OK…I guess this discussion lives on at JBF….so here’s my take and I apologize if I have repeated some of my opinion on this…
Here is the problem Winston (Bucs) have with the rape allegation. Because of the incomplete (some say botched) investigation, we will likely never know the absolute truth. Unless the “victim” recants…it will permanently be a stain on Winston’s reputation. He can’t prove it didn’t happen and for many, they expect him to do that (impossible).
Going forward, the Bucs have a huge PR problem on their hands with the NFL fans in general and their own fans primarily. Much of the fan base is female, some Christians….many with children…..and that also includes future potential fans.
Sure, winning and Winston staying squeaky clean will help….but it will never be enough. If he is innocent he will suffer from loss of endorsements and extreme over-scrutiny.
I have been of the opinion (as good as anyone’s) that the Glazers will pass on him in the end. Mariota is an alternative that is a safe choice and if the Bucs miss on him it will be because Mariota, himself doesn’t eventually perform at a high level.
That is a much safer risk to take with an already battered fan base. I also think they have given Lovie assurance that he has the time to develop his Rookie QB whichever one he chooses. They can send strong messages that the hurdles to picking Winston are high….

If Winston can pass a polygraph on the rape allegation, then I’m all in on him. Those who would actually oppose a polygraph, are afraid he may be found guilty. The fact is, if they were to administer a polygraph, the public would never get the results, but, if the Bucs were to pass on Winston in the draft, the public would speculate, that Winston must have failed his polygraph.
So in lew of that, the Bucs are really somewhat forced into selecting Winston now. Even if they find out that Winston actually committed a felony after a failed polygraph. Because, unless they choose to ignore, or cover up the results, they will have to lie to us the real reason why they didn’t select him. Also, this could provoke Pam Bondi to re-open the allegation rape case, and subpoena the Bucs to hand over polygraph results to the state.
This could be a mess and not good business for the NFL either. So, although I advocate there be a polygraph, I know there won’t be one. The Bucs will select Winston and all this will be swept under the rug, just like Tallahassee, cause “Jaboo got skills”.
I just know this, If I were applying for a lucrative paying position, and I had all these same allegations swirling over my head, I would totally expect my new perspective employer to have me take a polygraph. Actually, I take that back, in the real world, most employers would not even deal with you to that point. But, when it comes to athletes, it’s more about their abilities than it is about their behavior, and colleges are the worst offenders when it comes to rewarding bad behavior, especially their star QB.

I am convinced there is not enough evidence and that her credibility is highly questionable…..It’s not my own opinion that concerns me….it’s simply the way things are…..others won’t take the time…..the general public and many fans will convict him in the court of public opinion.

If you look at the records, Erica told her friends, but, she didn’t call the police, she didn’t call her parents.
Her friends did that. And once they were involved, it got away from her. Why tell her friends she was raped? Maybe a woman scorned? Maybe so her bf Jamal Roberts didn’t find out she was banging other guys?

Very simple NY, the victim said she did not want to prosecute during those 11 months.
Her attorney was the one talking to the police as per her wishes.
After the news was going to break on it, because news agencies had requested the police report, did she change her mind and decide she wanted it prosecuted.
All of this is well documented in the reports.
But the bottom line is that this documentary adds no new information. It’s the same info that the police, state attorney, and the Supreme Court Judge had.

Love and Warrick – I agree with you that it was not a $ grab at first. But you are unsure as to what the motivation was initially to claim rape if there was no rape.
I will tell you my theory. As the backdrop – consider that Erica was obviously scared of her family finding out that she was dating a “black boy” as her aunt put it. So the night that she went back to Winston’s apartment and had sex with him – she knew that Winston’s roommate had video of part of the encounter because she saw him through the partly opened door holding his phone up steadily with the red record light on. She was afraid that video of her having sex with a “black boy” might just get out. So she claimed rape in order to cover her bases just in case that video made it onto the internet or whatever. If the video did come out – then she had a ready made excuse to tell her family as to why she was seen on video having sex with a “black boy”.
That’s my theory at least. Could be BS – but it makes as much or more sense as any other reason I’ve seen as to why she would claim rape if that was not the case.
Once the lawyer aunt got involved – THEN it started to become about $ once they researched and found out that Winston was a 5 star blue chip QB recruit who might well be worth million$ in 2 or 3 years. And then the point come where it was all about the $ – because once it became obvious that Winston will never be charged for this accusation – there is no motivation other than $ that would prompt them to continue with this charade.

Story of Jameis Winston’s accuser to be told in documentary (story on NFL.com)
At the NFL Scouting Combine last week in Indianapolis, Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Lovie Smith and GM Jason Licht both expressed cautious optimism that the team’s background checks on Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston would come back satisfactory. But both were also clear that their dig into the former Heisman Trophy winner wasn’t yet complete.
And it likely won’t be without a look at a documentary set for release in select theaters this week.
The Hunting Ground, a film about sexual assault on college campuses, includes a detailed account from the woman who accused Winston of sexual assault in December 2012. The movie premieres in New York and Los Angeles on Friday.

She was not “hammered”. Testimony of everyone who witnessed (including her friends) said that she was not drunk much less wasted drunk. Blood alcohol level 3 hours later when blood was taken was .04 so there’s proof she wasn’t “hammered”. There were no drugs whatsoever in her system despite her claims that she was “drugged”.
According to the statement given to police by Erica’s friend Monika who was there with her at the bar – after Erica received a text to come outside from Winston’s roommate – she showed her friend the text and there was a discussion between them about Erica going with Winston and his friends. Monica questioned if it was a good idea – Erica said she wanted to go and Monica said “if you want to go- then go”. Erica was out the door within a matter of seconds. So don’t even try suggesting that she didn’t go home with them willingly. I guess she must have figured a nice game of Yatzee was awaiting her at the boys apartment – right?

I like Mariota too Erik – but “elite athleticism” does not a great NFL QB make.
There is a reason that Winston is now at the top of 85-90% of every draft board in the country. You think Mariota is the better QB obviously – but a vast majority of NFL experts disagree with your assessment – so you don’t have much of a leg to stand on in trying to make the argument that Mariota is a better QB than Winston.
Many experts were projecting Mariota #1 for awhile – but almost always with the caveat that if Winston didn’t have the “character concerns” then he would be the easy choice for #1. Now that everyone has seen the proof for themselves that Jameis is not trouble with a capital T – they are rightfully reverting back to just looking at tape and who is the best QB – and it is Winston by a pretty wide margin.

Maybe you are not a history buff; that’s fine. But in the end, the saying goes “the definition of insanity is continuing to do the same exact thing and expect different results.” This certainly applies to NFL Draft when it comes to immature quarterbacks. I literally have never played QB and I could have done exactly what he did on that whiteboard. 99% of the analysts are never real (gruden) and don’t give honey assessments for fear of passing off the good old boy NFL network. If Gruden was asked point blank- which QB should the Bucs take overall, he would waffle and tell u they are both good and it depends on personnel and coaching and the right fit… Never taking a true stance.
