Chopping Block
February 25th, 2015The free agency dinner bell rings March 10. Just around the corner. Hope you grab your popcorn.
Of course, it isn’t just free agents that will find new homes around that time. Involuntarily, so will a lot of overpriced veterans, as clubs slash cash to either get under the salary cap, or free up funds for a spending spree.
Adam Caplan of BSPN put together a list of 10 guys likely to face the NFL’s chopping block, and a certain Bucs offensive tackle, not surprisingly, found his way on Caplan’s list.
Anthony Collins | LT | Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Salary-cap number: $6 million
The signing of Collins last season was a no-brainer since he was coming off his best season with the Bengals in 2013. However, he wound up losing his starting job with the Buccaneers to Demar Dotson, who moved over from right tackle. Collins has $3 million of his $6 million base salary fully guaranteed even if he’s not on the roster. And the remaining $3 million becomes fully guaranteed on March 12.
The list is interesting not just because there is a Buccaneer on it, but some players that could help the Bucs. One would be defensive end Tamba Hali of Kansas City.
No sober person that could claim Hali isn’t a major upgrade over ghostly Michael Johnson. Well, a mannequin might be an upgrade, too.
The reason Hali might be turned loose is that the Chiefs are going to have to shell out major cash to Justin Houston, and the Chiefs spent a first-round pick on defensive end/outside linebacker Dee Ford. Per Caplan, Ford struggled last year.

I think there will be a lot more people cut than just Collins.

Even worse, Lovie got paid $3 million per win.

why hasn’t Koenen been cut yet? would we owe him money if we cut him before a certain date? just curious Hearing lovie say last year he did what we asked him to do was a joke –30-35 yard punts is just (as barkley would say) Turrible.
maybe its just me

The money owed to Michael Johnson is the only thing that could be keeping him off this list…and even then, he should be on the list.

Our punter was the highest paid in the NFL with the worst average. He needs to leave as of yesterday!

Like i said, I am more interested in who the Bucs cut and don’t resign as mush as what free agents they do sign!
February 25th, 2015 at 2:44 pm
much as what free agents they do sign!
February 25th, 2015 at 2:55 pm
Jacoby Jones is available now. The Bucs should not hesitate and sign him.

Cutting Collins won.’to be such a terrible hit ion the cap but Johnson’si will. Lovie spends more on dinner than you make in a week Edriington. LOL.
Living well is the best revenge you philistine.

Keep Collins for depth this year. Its only a 3million dollar difference whether we cut him this year or keep him. Draft some depth on the O-line this and next year when we owe him nothing cut him.

I would also like to see the BUCS go after Tamba Hali. Michael Johnson is a complete bust at DE.
February 25th, 2015 at 4:04 pm
Michael Johnson will be better this year.
February 25th, 2015 at 4:07 pm
Why is Koenen still here?

Desmond Bryant (Age:29)-Could be a nice rotation tackle-as some pass rush potential

We need to cut Collins & Cousins…..at the very least to send a message to the Oline….not acceptable..
Johnson is another story….I just can’t see trying to save $2mil on him while paying him $7mil to leave…..we have got to give him a shot……perhaps we can put up some billboards and shame him into playing better…..

He’s gotta go, he was so inconsistent. Articles have chronicled the speech delivered to the O Line at the end of the year, some responded, some didn’t and got benched….where was Collins?
Too much money for a backup – next! Unless he wants to redo the deal for the vet minimum
Teams across the league pluck 4th and 5th rounders routinely and plug them in as back ups, why spend millions? He is definitely not a starter….
