Jameis Watch: Ignore The 40-Yard Dash Time

February 22nd, 2015
Winstonwide

The evidence is overwhelming

Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, former national champion Jameis Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon and Josh McCown.

It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback ever to wear No. 5 in the state of Florida.

Joe isn’t blind or wearing Jameis-Winston-colored glasses. Joe saw Winston look like anything but a great athlete running the 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis yesterday.

It was ugly. His official time, per NFL.com, was 4.97 seconds. (Damn, Joe was clocked faster than that with his college team.)

However, Bucs fans would be wise to ignore Winston’s 40 time. One of the better running quarterbacks of the past five NFL seasons was a guy who also ran a 4.97 time at the Combine. His name was Josh Freeman.

The Bucs’ former franchise QB ran for 364 yards on 68 attempts in 2010, second most in the NFL that year behind Michael Vick. And it’s not like Freeman was running for his life. It was mostly smart running — for a 10-6 team — en route to a great season throwing the football and protecting it.

Sprinting in a straight line is much different than running in a football game. It always has been. Joe’s almost glad Winston isn’t more of a runner. That’s a great way to get killed in the NFL and break down quickly. Winston typically beats teams in the pocket, where he’ll make his living in the NFL.

Need more evidence that 40 times don’t mean much? Mike Glennon ran a faster 40 time than Winston and Freeman during his pre-draft days, and Josh McCown is a better athlete than all of them (4.59 40-yard dash), and he rarely figured out how use his legs effectively last season.

Joe likes the way Winston moves in this college clip below.

    I remember that play. Beautiful.

All you Deniers: Riiiiight, we don’t need that….

  2. Jacko101 Says:

Joe…. Relax please with Winston one day please. Our franchise has had enough duds and we surely don’t need one with the first pic.

  3. Underdog Says:

I really do hope that Joe knows how through all of his continuious and daily useless Winston dribble how many devoted readers he has lost

Just like how Joe writing in the third person would drive away fans, or Joe endlessly using nicknames would kill readership, or Joe calling out his media brethren publicly, or Joe calling Mark Dominik “Rockstar, or Joe having too many ads on his pages, or Joe changing the navigation on the site, or Joe supporting Johnny Football, etc. etc. Pick a year. Joe’s traffic grows significantly annually, while the naysayers continue to say Joe is chasing people away.–Joe

  4. Josh P Says:

yet all of the devoted readers he has lost are still posting ad nauseum..

  5. Bucfan4life Says:

What a great clip. It also shows how much quicker he is than Glennon as far as moving around in the pocket. Glennon would have been sacked there. He may not be fast at 40 yard dash but he is quick moving around the pocket.

  6. Rob Says:

I agree that the 40 time isn’t important, but Mariota has miles of tape on plays where he escapes pressure then delivers great passes down the field.

  7. Josh P Says:

    @Rob

you are correct about his ability to escape pressure..But that was college.. NFL is a much faster game and he will not have that kind of success in the NFL.

  8. J 2.0 Says:

    @ underdog

It was this way last year with all the Johnny Football stories. We all know Jameis is going to visit with the Bucs here soon as well so there will be about 87 Jameis stories in those few days.

The 40 time is irrelevant. Jameis is quick enough to make plays with his feet and extend plays when the O-line undoubtedly breaks down. He also possesses well above average athleticism for his size and can make tacklers miss.

  9. tmaxcon Says:

    rob

mariota was sacked 31 times. that’s 31 times his superior speed meant nothing.

  10. biff barker Says:

I’d really, really like to know what Koetter thinks. He’s the guy who has been successful at both levels and in different systems too.

  11. mikeh Says:

same old! you know how many other QBs have done that. but yes he showed he can keep a play alive and kept his eyes down field nice play. against boston college DB.

  12. Couch Fan Says:

Mariota sacked 31 times. Winston 17. Speed at QB doesnt matter very much. It’s nice but not a necessity.

  13. mikeh Says:

I hope we fix are O LINE no matter who the QB is.

  14. rayjay1122 Says:

The only time a 40 yard straight line run is needed by a QB is when he is trying to catch a DB to prevent a pick six!!! OK, that was a little jab due to the interceptions thrown but just poking fun. I like Winston and if he is the pick I am all for it!!

  15. kaput Says:

    I wonder what Marion’s 40 time was?

It’s not about sprinting 30 or 40 yards, it’s about moving 30 or 40 inches so that you can deliver a strike down field with guys diving all around you.

I’m a Gator, graduated there back in ’95, and have no love for the garnet and gold, but this choice is a no-brainer. Winston all day long.

  16. Corey Says:

Less athletic ability makes passer like him train harder mentally to overcome physical limitation. Also makes defense play in no mans land due to not knowing what JW is thinking. They have to respect his passing

  17. mikeh Says:

there is no question Winston has skills. the bucs just have to look him over for the next 2 months. on his off field stuff and make a decision.

  18. Tom Says:

If Joe is driving readers away by talking about Winston then what will drafting him do to them?

This is more about getting fans acclimated to the guy who very well could be our starting QB for the next saga of Bucs football

  19. Tom Edrington Says:

Comforting to know I had a faster 40 time than Jameis when I was his age.

Guy can’t run or jump……Joe has totally worn me out……

I am officially giving in to the Dark Side of The Force…..

Hopefully, Winston will give funny interviews when he has a few of those three and four pick games…..

    Bring him on!

  20. eric Says:

It’s funny how everyone points out how important a good o line is when it comes to preventing sacks yet no one acknowledges how Winston’s entire line is projected to go in the first three rounds. I wonder how Mariota would have been sacked if he had the same line. Maybe that’s the reason he was sacked more? Last I checked hew threw 18 it’s in college against crappy defenses. Mariota had only 2. Fact is turnovers not sacks taken, usually lead to opponents winning games. Even Freeman had less Ints.
Maybe Kelvin Benjamin is the reason he posted such great stats. Kinda like what Evans was to Manziel. Name me one star wide receiver that played with Mariota….I’ll wait. Then name me one star o lineman. I’ll wait for that too. Use your brain people!

  21. Dylan Says:

If the bucs can just draft a couple lineman and sign a couple in FA, with winston the offense could be scary. a healthy ASJ(6’6), V jack(6’5), Evans(6’5), plus doug martin and charles sims at RB rotation. Bucs are drafting winston, there was a clip after jameis threw a pass at the combine. The camera then showed lovie and jason laughing saying “wow”. “great pass”. Im no expert but they looked excited.

  22. Iknowmorethanlovie Says:

Joe was all over Manziel last draft the dude turned out to be not ready. I just hope he’s right about Jameis as missing on this pick could be a franchise killer for this team and city. Especially with Loser Lovie at the helm

  23. Josh P Says:

    @Tom Edrington

Guess you didn’t watch Ok St. game when JW broke for a 30 yard TD run and in the process hurdled over one of his OL that was blocking down field.. He runs and jumps just fine.. You can check out the Duke game in 13′ also if you want to see how high he can jump.

  24. mikeh Says:

SORRY- professor eric but we do need some oline help no!

  25. Patrick in VA Says:

Folks, if the same thing happening last year with Manziel didn’t drive readers away, then it won’t happen this year either. It’s silly to talk about how many viewers it is driving away when we don’t have access to the page view numbers and it’s clearly not driving away those that are commenting about it because they’re here commenting about it. Just let it go. That’s one of the bonuses of the Joes implementing the “read more” button. You don’t have to scroll very far to get past those articles that you think are silly.

  26. Josh P Says:

    @eric

FSU O-line was not very good at all this year.Matter of fact it was middle of the pack in the ACC.Which was the reason why Cameron Erving moved from LT to C, it was out of necessity.. They lost a lot of leadership on the line when Stork left last season.

  27. mac Says:

I would have liked to see Winston run at least a 4.8… But it really doesn’t matter… He is mobile enough to extend plays and he is good moving around in the pocket… I was impressed with his throwing and so was everybody else at the combine…

Nothing wrong with Mariotta but he is the second best QB… I was also impressed with Bryce Petty from Baylor… He has a great arm…

  28. Josh P Says:

.20 difference in 40 times wouldn’t even be noticeable when it comes to a QB on the field.

  29. 87ForWinstonNOMariota Says:

Winston has probably(just a guess) already studied who the Bucs have on their roster and our O-line. He LOVES to watch game film and try to find any edge for his game.

Jameis the line was atrocious….so unless that gets fixed…throw quick!

  30. eric Says:

Walter football has 3 of the FSU lineman in the top 7 G/C in this deep draft for o lineman. I think they know a tad bit more than you do. Get your facts straight before you run that gator. Chris Landry of Landry football who is an actual paid and unbiased scout thinks Mariota is better on the field. Not to mention the train wreck he is off the field. Go to the big dogs page and listen to the hour they spoke if your still in denial. Say no to Freeman 2.0!

  31. Ryan Says:

Joe, you’re scaring me. I was on board with your JFF love last offseason and I wanted us to draft him too, and thus far he is nowhere near what we thought he could be. Now this year your man crush is Winston and I’m on board too and I’m scared! Someone take a quick trip into the future and let us know if Jameis worked out or not.

  32. mikeh Says:

we need oline help! for our nonexistent running game.

  33. Buxfan Says:

In the NFL, QB’s make a living in the pocket. Russell made a lot of plays in the pocket. Johnny Manziel and Marcus Mariota are one read, take off QB’s. That don’t work in the NFL. They trust there legs more then there eyes and arms. Marcus could be good in about 4 years. But God forbid if a team draft Mariota to start him right away. He’s got a lot to learn before jumping into the fire.

  34. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Mikeh I know you rather we go with mariota but im starting to respect your quotes more and more. Your not using exclamation marks as much as if you are angry. I think we can all agree we just desperately ready to see the Buccs win again. Nice to see you refrane from calling us WINSton supporters brain dead. Salute to you bro.

  35. rayjay1122 Says:

These mock drafts just kill me!!! LOL. Now Bucky Brooks as of 2/19 has Mariota sliding all the way to the Chiefs at 18. No way if Mariota slides that far that the Eagles do not trade up to grab him. I know you can’t predict trades but some of the mocks are a little like just pulling names from a hat and plugging that name into the spot pulled for. I mean do these guys put any thought at all into these things??? We may very well pick Winston #1 but there is no way Mariota goes #18 to the Chiefs. I would bet a huge sum of money that, that will not be the selection at 18.

  36. 87ForWinstonNOMariota Says:

eric…I already HAVE used my brain. It took about 0.5 seconds Jameis Winston is a no-brainer.

Mocks are saying Winston to be drafted by the Bucs in a 9-3 lead. The margin is going to grow soon for Winston and then it will all but be a done deal. Most mockers don;t get the first pick wrong.

All we’ll have to do is wait for the name to be called sunshine!

Hey Hey Tampa Bay The Bucs Know How To Shine!

Never HAD a franchise QB in Tampa. I want to find out if there is one in this draft!

  37. eric Says:

Just as I posted earlier, not a single top flight WR for Mariota and no o lineman worth speaking of. Correct me if I’m wrong but having at least a cople, he’ll even one would have made Mariota look even better. Case rested.

  38. Nybucsfan Says:

Joe all you do is contradict yourself. I think you owe the big dog who you bet he would run faster than 4.8 now 4.97 is ok and you are comparing him to JF5. Hmmm how about a lineman that was 337 had a better high jump. No way he is a gym rat like people claim. 20% body fat is a lot.

To clarify, the original bet with Big Dog was that Winston would break 5.0. Joe said he would. So Joe won. However, Joe expressed confidence Winston would break 4.8. What you won’t find is Joe saying every that 40 times matter for a QB. –Joe

  39. 87ForWinstonNOMariota Says:

rayjay…maybe he thinks the Chiefs are going to trade up with the Titans

  40. mikeh Says:

@NOLE- im a bucs fan first and foremost pal. also i only get pissed when people start name calling and crap you know. im sick of it! just like the rest of you.

  41. 87ForWinstonNOMariota Says:

Just a note to our readers :

eric… is not a pro scout or NFL draft analyst.

That is all for now. Have a nice day! 🙂

  42. iamkingsu Says:

Mariota should slide all the way out of the 1st round. I saw him play live when they came to UVA. That offense is a gimmick in every sense of the word and should be banned. He did not look up at the defense(pre snap). He just ran as fast as he could to the line of scrimmage and snapped the ball. Their players are ridiculously fast and they stretch you sideline to sideline and endzone to endzone every snap. They shouldve just played on the track. Reality will hit this kid like a ton of bricks if he doesn’t end up with Chip Kelly at the next level

  43. eric Says:

Name me a scout who does mock drafts. Pay close attention they switch the picks on a weekly basis to get people to go to the sites. Bottom line Lovie isn’t drafting a rapist, thief, turnover machine, and arrogant prick. Enjoy your Noles losing next year!

  44. Buccfan37 Says:

I wonder how well Winston would have fared behind the Bucs line last year. The “cement shoed giraffe” had no time back there, neither did McCown. It is doubtful Winston would of been left standing with that lack of protection. With an improved O line, all the more reason to keep Glennon.

  45. 87ForWinstonNOMariota Says:

Joe that’s going to be my theme song on draft day….along with the Noles war chant song mixed in. It’s not that long of a song and it’s the best song there ever was. Oh well.

  46. 87ForWinstonNOMariota Says:

Bottom line : eric is in denial.

I told you all of this was coming to this site soon.

This place is the place to be on the net right now if you’re a Bucs fan and love controversy. There’s no place like home!

  47. eric Says:

    Snap on….Craftsman….Winstonnomariota. See the correlation?

  48. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

eric let me guess you probably a gator right. If you didnt notice FSU had the nuber 2 recruiting class in the nation.AGAIN homeboy. As long as Fisher around we’ll be competeing for playoff spot year end year out. Bank on it.

  49. Bert Says:

    @Tom Edrington
I don’t know if your aware but jameis is a QB, not a receiver so he won’t be jumping or having to out run people every play. We won’t need the tebow jump pass every play. Nice try. Comments like that make some of y’all sound clueless.

  50. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Perryman is not our guy at mlb in the 2nd round. Stephone Anthony is the target. 6.2 243lbs 4.5 40 time clemson watch the youtube video.

  51. eric Says:

No not a Gator at all. Just an unbiased Tampa boy who wants his Bucs to be competitive again. Nole fans hate on Mariota cuz his team whooped your teams a $$. The fact is Mariota’s Ducks killed Winston’s Noles. Now make an excuse for that one.

  52. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

87ForWINStonnomariota I love that idea about using the FSU war chant come draft night I use it as my phones ring tone. I cant get enough of that sh*t man.

  53. Tom Edrington Says:

@ Josh: last I checked Okie St. and Duke weren’t in the NFL….

@ Bert: if giving in to the probability of Winston in Tampa is clueless, I’m in!

  54. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

“Joe isn’t blind or wearing Jameis-Winston-colored glasses.”

No, but I wouldn’t be surprised if you already ordered a custom No. 5 Bucs jersey and slapped the name Winston on the back lmao.

  55. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

“Bottom line Lovie isn’t drafting a rapist, thief, turnover machine, and arrogant prick. ”

Make sure you are here on April 30 so we can rub it in your face. Jameis to Tampa!

  56. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

I hear you eric,I did find it somewhat strange we all of sudden developed fumblitus but thats a conversation for another time. Reality of the matter is FSU is very relevant and will remain that way for long time.

  57. 87ForWinstonNOMariota Says:

eric…not one of us Buc-Noles fans hate on Mariota because he whooped up on FSU. That’s all in your delusional mind.

Who cares about what Mariota or Winston just did in college while playing up against eachother? eric. That’s who.

  58. Bert Says:

    @Tom Edrington
Did we miss something did mariota play against NFL teams while at Oregon?

  59. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

Fact is you can’t even get your own numbers straight.

Winston had 24 interceptions in two seasons.

Mariota had 23 fumbles and 14 picks in three seasons.

    I agree, turnovers matter.

  60. mark2001 Says:

Well, I hope ends all the “statue” talk about Glennon….apparently, with a good offensive line, he is fast enough, if Winston is…..

  61. Thunder Sack Says:

    @eric

Good points with your original post. I didn’t really think of doing that sort of analysis backed up with facts.

As I have stated before, trade down and fix the myraid of holes on the team!

  62. 87ForWinstonNOMariota Says:

Thunder Sack…good point on trading down.

What do you think they are going to do though?

  63. mark2001 Says:

I can see it now….a Glennon/ Winston QB competition….all I can say is, let the faster man win….can’t wait to see those two “road runners” blazing down the track or field.

  64. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

    Trade down,C’mon man…

  65. LargoBuc Says:

Being able to run fast in a straight line is not that important for a QB. Pocket awareness is. You can be the fastest QB ever but that’s no subsitute for pocket awareness.

  66. mark2001 Says:

It isn’t any more serious than talking about Mariota’s lack of “friendly energy” in his news conference, or the way he schmoozed with other players and any inference regarding Mariota’s leadership. But some tried to make that an issue, didn’t they?

  67. Bert Says:

Does everyone bashing Jameis’s speed understand if he is drafted we won’t be running the veer?

So, the writer’s premise is to not believe when Lovie is complementing someone, correct? Didn’t Lovie complement Mariota and say it didn’t matter what offensive system he was in?

Could be lying about that as well, if your article is to be believed.

  71. Maze Says:

Great work Joes. Keep the Winston articles coming. Bucs are desperately void at QB

  72. White Tiger Says:

Lets qualify that: The only way a 5.0 Forty time DOESN’T matter is if you play for the New England Patriots, or the Denver Broncos…or you currently play QB in the ACC.

He lost weight, but he wasn’t in shape, he had a poor vert, a poor broad, and if his life depended on a foot race, he’d only be able to beat our defensive ends, Mike “Dynamite” Glennon and Tom Brady in a foo race. However, 40 year old Peyton Manning would still be able to beat him…

With the offensive line the Bucs currently have…he’d be on IR before the end of the first season.

  73. DRAFT #5 Says:

I don’t get this trade down foolishness. We are in position to draft a possible franchise QB and we pass. I don’t think so. If that happens Lovie and Licht may as well pack up their offices. When is the next time we are going to get a chance to draft one in another 15 years. Come on now draft Jameis and watch the wins pile up

Also for those saying MM had a bad offensive line then why is the C and LT project as 3rd round draft picks. If they sucked as it was suggested then they would go undrafted.

Again here to report the facts something others ignore.

  74. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Speaking for Pablo

“Pablo can’t ignore the 40 yard dash when it come to importance….like Pablo said….it is very important when Pablo outruns Border Patrol Agents…..it also comes in handy when Pablo is trying to avoid an a$$ whoppin’ from that Arizona Sherriff”
No, Pablo thinks Buc QBs need to be able to run for their life several times a game”

  75. grafikdetail Says:

Chris Landry is very biased toward Mariota simply because he thinks the kid is a choir boy & thinks Winston is the 2nd coming of the devil… he can wrap it up in whatever stats or analysis he wants but after listening to him it was quite obvious… regardless of what he thinkgs…the consensus among scouts working in the NFL… is Winston is better

  76. White Tiger Says:

I’m not an expert, so I have to yield to the actual experts. Since most of the experts are picking Kid Fameis. while I don’t see it…I see Mariota as a dependable young man who has PROVEN it by BEATING Kid Fameis in a head-to-head competition.

Mariota GRADUATED in THREE years, while Kid Fameis TALKED about graduating – and even HYPING the fact that he was recruited by Stanford – but he’s leaving FSU as a 3rd year sophomore pursuing a degree in social work…NOT GRADUATING.

Mariota EXCELLED in the only offense he was asked to run – improving his TD’s from his first season, while reducing his INT’s. Meanwhile Kid Fameis TD’s were cut in half, while his INT’s DOUBLED from his starting season…

There are ZERO Character issues with Mariota, his teammates love him, and describe him as a leader where it counts…on the field. Throw out any of the allegations of RAPE – but when it MATTERED MOST, Kid Fameis stood on a table and yelled obscenities at coeds who walked in front of him…and that was AFTER telling his coach, teammates, and the media that he’d NEVER be found in a similar situation…after being cleared of the RAPE allegation…

Kid Fameis gained weight after the season – big red flag (sure he dropped the weight, but he still doesn’t look in shapes). Every scouting report since Jamarcus Russell has told us that weight gain after the season and before the combine is a HUGE red flag. It can be indicative that the player isn’t taking this process seriously, that he’s an indulged college star who might be difficult to work with – and the flagrant arguments with his head coach that have been caught on video…

Sorry – I just don’t see it. The interception thing alone was addressed by Mayock yesterday…becuase the only reason Kid Fameis has so many come from behind wins in the second half – is due to HIS sloppy play in the FIRST half of those games!?

Anyone thinking this kid will walk right in and start winning in the NFL – is a fanboy.

  77. Bucfan4life Says:

Landry is certain that Winston won’t work out because of the off the field issues and nothing else. Big Dog has to know enough about football to know that MM’s completion percentage and yards per pass are all skewed by the system he is in. The YAC and amount of screen passes are absolutely part of he reason his numbers look so good. But to hear those two talk you would think those aren’t valid concerns. Well 95% of the experts are saying Winston after the combine. The NFL coach of the year says that MM runs no semblance of what a pr QB needs to do. Winston is definitely coming to Tampa unless he robs a bank between now and the draft! All these experts are not wrong. Landry and the rock star are really the only ones saying Mariota should be the guy.

  78. eric Says:

The best qb prospect in the last decade Andrew Luck has very similar combine results as Mariota. Plus Rodgers and Wilson are also part of the new generation of Quarterbacks.
    Luck. Mariota. A.Rodgers
    40 yd – 4.67. 4.52. 4.71
    Vertical- 36″ 36″ 34’5″
    Broad jump- 10’4″ 10’1″ 9’2″
    Wilson
    4.55
    34″
    9’8″

Welcome to the new NFL folks!

  79. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    “Mariota GRADUATED in THREE years”

You do realize that he redshirted in 2011 right? That’s four years on campus.

I agree, you’re not an expert. Neither am I. But, I can’t wait for Jameis to Evans touchdowns. Get on the bus or don’t. It doesn’t matter.

  80. Thunder Sack Says:

    @87ForWinstonNOMariota

There is still some time before the draft. It depends on what teams make some moves. No one was expecting McCown to get cut and that definitely made things more interesting.

More than likely the Bucs have evaluated the talent in the draft, evaluated free agents, and are going to go into patching mode to field a team that will be better than last year. They probably learned that spending heavily on FA is not going to build a better team quickly and a contender that will last.

I am thinking they will trade down and address one of the lines (hopefully OL) first. The trend, for years, has been putting together solid lines and winning with a game manager like Glennon.

Has Lovie done anything in his career to dissuade the fanbase from thinking he has deviated from this plan?

  81. Bert Says:

    @eric
Luck, Rodgers, and Russell were all pro style QB’s coming out of college. None of those QB’s came from a 100% no huddle option based offense. All were considered pocket passers. While trying to make a case for mariota and the “New NFL” you actually made a case for Jameis. If people want to mock jameis for wanting to compare himself to Peyton and Brady it is no different then those labeling mariota as the next Rodgers.

  82. DRAFT #5 Says:

I could give two craps about combine measurable’s for QB’s. The last time i watched a game there was no broad jump, vertical jump or 40 in those games. I want a guy who can make all the throws, reads defenses, command a huddle and knows X and O’s.

Also combine measurable’s do not measure how good a player will be. See combine warriors like Mike Mamula, Gaines Adams, RG III ect ect.

If people are bagging on the kid because he wants to be great like Manning and Brady those people need to have their heads examined. I want my quarterback to be cocky and want to be great. All QB are cocky see Aaron Rogers hate the Packers love the guys competitive nature and cockiness. That what Jameis has and what this offense/team needs.

    Again just the facts.

White tiger what you willing wager on the Buccs pick? The hell wit jerseys im interested in cash, holla at me. We can work out the details.

  84. Eric Says:

If we were assembling a track team Marcus would be the guy.

  85. Bert Says:

    @draft #5
    Good post

  86. DRAFT #5 Says:

I could also care what Chris Landry says. If he was such a great judge of talent he would be working for a team not doing his own thing.

You do not pass up the best QB prospect since Luck. If L & L did this and have a bad year again both are gone. If he pans out to be as good as most think they will never work in the league again by passing on him. The league is more forgiving on coach’s and GM’S that take a QB and they fail then passing on #1 player in the Draft. See the Coach and GM who let Elway go to Denver. They never worked in the league after that to my knowledge.

    @draft #5
    Good post

Thanks. Just trying to bring the facts not all the other nonsense people are talking about.

    Ignore the Crab-legs-stealing
    Ignore the BB-gun-shooting
    Ignore the obscenity-hollering
    Ignore the allegations
    Ignore the 40-Yard Dash Time
    Ignore Mariota
    Ignore Glennon.
Just close your eyes and take him.
You’ll see who he is after you draft him.

  89. DRAFT #5 Says:

Yes we will. A super bowl winning QB.

  90. Brian D Says:

Winston’s touchdown run against Oklahoma State this year was as impressive as anything I’ve ever seen Mariota do wih his feet.

  91. Bert Says:

    @draft #5
Agree 100%. Love and warrick Dunn said it best yesterday “jameis could walk on water and the haters would bash him by saying he couldn’t swim”.

  92. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

All hail the future face of the NFL “WINSton”,put ya money and prove yo stance damn all this banter.

  93. Bert Says:

    @brian d
One of the best QB runs I’ve ever seen. But haven’t you been reading the mariota mob, he didn’t run a fast 40 time so according to them he can’t be an NFL QB because he didn’t run a 4.4 forty. When the NFL teams start running the veer I’ll want speed out of our QB otherwise I’ll take the pocket passer(winston). Just my opinion.

  94. Senor Mofo Says:

Too many people frame this endless debate as though it can be resolved by comparing and contrasting Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota, as though one of them is inherently “better.”

But that isn’t the issue. Both of these guys have elite skills in certain areas, both have high football IQs, and both are exceptional leaders on the field.

It really comes down to what the Buccaneers’ long-term offensive vision is. If they decide that a traditional pocket passer fits their vision, and brings them more reliability, they will pick Winston. If they decide that they want to run a more innovative and creative scheme, and that a more athletic QB brings them more versatility, they will pick Mariota.

  95. Brandon Says:

Jake Plummer ran a 4.87 and was considered the most mobile QB in the league at one point.

I also know that Bruce Gradkowski ran a 4.59 and couldn’t get out of his own way.

  96. Bert Says:

Blaine Gabbert had a good 40 time. How did that work out?

  97. 87ForWinstonNOMariota Says:

Senor Mofo….the thing is I can’t see Lovie having any OC run some crazy innovative, creative scheme. Maybe some of you think that he might, just not me. I could be wrong as usual though. Who knows what in the hell Lovie thinks?

  98. Seminole Bill Says:

Seminole Bill watched last year as Glennon had trouble outrunning linemen, much less linebackers and DB’s. Seminole Bill wants to know why, if Glennon beat Jameis’ time in the 40, that Seminole Bill shouldn’t be worried that Jameis is too slow for the NFL.

  99. 87ForWinstonNOMariota Says:

Seminole Bill…the answer is simple for me. Instincts. Winston has much better pocket awareness than Glennon and therefore has better escapability than Glennon. Atleast from the games that I’ve watched which is all of them.

  100. 87ForWinstonNOMariota Says:

Bill …is Glennon faster than Brady, Luck, or Manning?

If he is faster than them….why does it matter?

  101. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Senior Mofo

I believe this pick will come down to whichever QB poses the least risk….

If Winston can answer the character risk issues….he’s the pick.
If Mariota can answer the NFL ready/capabilites….he’s the pick.

If both are deemed not a risk…..the Glazers would want to go with the QB with the highest long-term ceiling….Lovie, however would want the “win-now” QB.

And this, Gentlemen….brings us back to square one!!!

  102. White Tiger Says:

People who know their favorite player didn’t do well in the combine – always say the combine results are meaningless…

However, there’s a reason the NFL combine is getting MORE popular, and why owners, GM’s, head coaches (and staff) show up every year…and it’s not because the combine is meaningless…

  103. Howard Cosell Says:

So it looks like the Bucs really will draft Winston.
This is an epic victory for Joe compared to last year.
Although last year I was correct in thinking Manziel
would have a meltdown, which he did.
Football -wise I’m OK Winston, great player, but what
I’m concerned about is the obious beaten to death horse
in the room. Maybe Lovie, McCoy, Brooks and Koetter can all
take 6 hour shifts for 24-hour a day babysitting.

HEY! Don’t get mad. He’s acted like a loose cannon but his
football skills are so high that people don’t care about the lunacy.

It hope he works out. I really really do as a Bucs fan.
If he works out we can harass the division.

  104. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

Everyone who says he’s not similar to Josh freeman, you’re right; JFree was a better athlete with just as good of an arm and quite intelligent coming out. I would possibly rather have a JFree clone over Winston the statue….. Think about it. If u were on defense, who would rather face: A qb who is more stationery making throws or a guy who can potentially make those throws from anywhere on the field and can also outrun 90% of the guys in the league??? … Too much logic?

  105. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

In that last part of my comment above, I was talking about Mariota being able to outrun 90% of the guys in the league and can make throws from anywhere.

  106. Buddha Says:

Slow, fat, bad shoulder, history of poor off-field decision-making– of course he should be the first pick in the draft. Only a franchise as mired in poor management, bad luck, and incompetence would even consider such a hair- brained notion.

  107. White Tiger Says:

@Eric With CleanAthletics.com – I was wondering when someone else would make the obvious Josh Freeman comparison. I’ve done it, despite the personal meltdown, but then I’ve been a fan of Freeman for a long time. Trouble is, Freeman never had a hint of controversy in college – and won’t the haters hate even more when they find out that the last time Tampa drafted a QB that ran a 4.97 40 – in the first round – was Josh Freeman (who also played in that vaunted “pro-style” system…

Imagine the pressure you’d feel if you had some secrets in your closet – and were drafted 1st overall…it’s unfortunate, kid has talent, just not a lot of self-discipline.

    @buddha = QFT

I was going to add a comment – but you summed it all up quite accurately – and with fewer words.

Lets hope this Kid Fameis talk was all just a smokescreen…

  108. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I am really torn. I want Mariota…but once in a long while I get these…insights. A confirmation of sorts.

And for the first time, I got one tonight (at least I think it was). I’ve made money off these things, but they don’t happen often. When the shuttle blew, I had one of it happening the night before. It’s happened several times when legally gambling…and I won each time. Freaky, I know. Like I said, it happens so little that it’s hardly worth mentioning.

However, it happened tonight. And it concerns Winston being the best option. This goes against everything I want though. Darn it. These things are never wrong. They’ve happened maybe 12 times in my life, but never been wrong.

    Crap.

  109. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Freeman was considered mobile as well.

I think what a pocket quarterback needs is elusiveness. He doesn’t have to run more than 10 yards unless we’re pinned back because of penalties. With that short a run, its more important to be elusive.

    In my opinion anyway.

  110. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Mike Glennon is a perfect example of a pocket passer without elusiveness. He has no pocket awareness at all.
