Loser Hands?

February 19th, 2015

Jameis WinstonMan, BSPN had a field day this afternoon with the freshly measured hand sizes of quarterback prospects Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota.

Both are under the “benchmark” 10-inch span, bellowed iconic former general manager Bill Polian. But Winston’s hand span was just 9 3/8 inches, whereas Mariota was 9 7/8 inches.

Oh, the panel of Polian, John “The Professor” Clayton and Sal Paolantonio were all worked up over Winston’s hand size.

BSPN flashed a fancy graphic on the TV screen about the small percentage of good starting quarterbacks who have succeeded with about that hand size, and they claimed Colin Kapernick (9 1/8 inches) is the only good one drafted since 2006. Never mind that Tony Romo is under nine inches and Aaron Rodgers checks in where Winston does.

Jiminy Christmas! Joe’s afraid to know what will be measured next.

I’m so sick of hearing people say that Jameis was the one that put FSU in the hole early in games. That’s a comment clearly made by someone who didn’t watch a single FSU game from start to finish.
    ……………………………………………………………………
I guess Creamsickle missed the UF and Louisville games. Either that or he is just full of shyte.

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Not an issue in my book….unless the hands are doing something illegal….

  3. lord cornelius Says:

    lol dumb.

both QBs can obviously sling the rock fine.

The avg hand size for QBs is 9.6 inches according to what I just read. So Mariota is actually above average and Winston is .2 inches smaller than average. Woopady do either way

The fact that Kaepernick and Rodgers have small hands is proof that it means nothing. Both those QBs are at least in the top 5 for velocity on their fastballs.

  4. Couch Fan Says:

Well these comments should be entertaining. Lol

  5. lord cornelius Says:

Winston definitely put FSU in some holes this year. Only a crazy homer would deny that.

However he only did it in a few games. And in those few games he was able to play exceptionally in the 2nd half.

There were a lot of games where our entire team just sucked. Primary defense / running game. We had NO running game until late in the 2nd half of the season. Winston had to be the entire offense and defenses knew it.

So basically I think you’re a fool if you say Winston was the only guy who put FSU in holes every week. I also think you’re a fool if you say he never did lol.

  6. Barry Says:

So it’s fair to say this is another Red Flag? OH Boy Winston supporters.

  7. PapaSki Says:

Just underinflate the footballs and you can grip it and rip it fine

  8. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

knuckledragger, been sitting on that one all morning huh?

Why didn’t you just respond to me under the post where it was originally instead of here? God you Winston HATERS are freaking pathological.

But thanks for proving that you watched zero FSU football this past yr. The defense was atrocious and was the reason we were constantly coming back, not the INT’s

  9. biff barker Says:

Shaun King reportedly has small hands.

They seem to work fine at the buffet though.

  10. Jeagan1999 Says:

A larger hand size does help in gripping the ball, but I wouldn’t say that either of these guys has particularly small hands. Don’t know that there’s anything to be overly afraid of there!

  11. Nybucsfan Says:

Jameis”the hunting ground” has bust all over him

  12. knuckledragger Says:

@Creamsickle………….Im not a Winston hater at all. Im a doubter in Human Nature. And no I haven’t been sitting on this one all morning. I just came home for lunch and read your ridiculous comment so I thought I would respond. I must say sir (if youre old enough to be called ‘sir”) that you as a Winston supporter are far worse than those annoying Tebowites a few yrs ago. Keep on posting. I enjoy humor

  13. biff barker Says:

And Russell Wilson is too short to play QB in the NFL. 2 consecutive SB starts should tell you that.

Frankly, I’m more worried about Winston keeping his weight down and Mariotta building a little more muscle.

  14. knuckledragger Says:

Oh and BTW I watch 11 of the FSU games from beginning to end with my wife the FSU grad.

  15. Armando Says:

Unplug the phone and DRAFT WINSTON!

  16. cover deuce Says:

Lol Papaski you beat me to the Tom Brady joke. Bravo.

  17. Buc Neckid Says:

You know what they say the correlation to small hand sizes are?

    Small Gloves

  18. Skyline Crew Says:

Winston’s hand span was just 9 3/8 inches, whereas Mariota was 9 7/8 inches.
    ********

Hahahaha wasn’t it all the Winstonites saying how small Mariota was and his hands were tiny and Winston was big. Guess not.

  19. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

No wonder Shaun King likes him…..

  20. bucrightoff Says:

    It all makes sense now…

    Small hands = small penis
Small penis = no ladies interest
    Small penis = still horny

Thus, you now know why he forces himself on women

    /sarcasm.

  21. jp4 Says:

On a whim, just measured my own hand span…10 inches!
That makes me a better QB prospect than Aaron Rodgers.

Forget Mariota and Winston…Bucs should sign ME!

  22. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I don’t know if my hands are small or not, but I know it takes both to hold my whopper.

On topic, smaller hands do tend to mean more fumbles and less control on the football. There have been exceptions though.

  23. OAR Says:

….and without nipples, boobs would be pointless.

  24. ndog Says:

I just wonder how all you Mariota over Winston people are going to feel if we do pick Mr. Emotionless over Winston and he sucks. This chance does not come along that often and you want to waste it on a project and just hope he can play in a system he had never even tried much less played in against the best defenses in the world. And you do have a guy who has played in that type of system and been very successful. You people are unreal.

  25. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

On a side note, men seem to lose tough with reality the older they get. Or get dumber. As a man, I have noticed these things. I was certainly smarter in my younger years. I’m still more evolved than most of you, but still…

    😉

  26. Joe Says:

I just wonder how all you Mariota over Winston people are going to feel if we do pick Mr. Emotionless over Winston and he sucks.

About the same as the folks who bellyached for Tavon Austin and Trent Richardson. Crickets.

  27. jp4 Says:

    Well, I guess that’s it…
ndog obviously has found a logical argument for Winston that settles the matter once and for all. Can’t argue with this kind of logic.
Why did no one else bring this point up, before?

  28. Pickgrin Says:

    Great Headline Joe. Perfectly sarcastic.

This is what’s wrong with the process right here. Every little deviation from the “perfect measurement” for any body part or skill set of the highly rated players becomes fair game for the ridicule of the talking heads. And out come the comparison charts to show how the projected expected results of that “weakness” will translate into the NFL supposedly . Its over the top – obsessive even.

Winston is 230 but people talk about his weight and concerns he will have weight problems. Mariota is 220 and he is talked about as underweight and “needs to bulk up”. LOfrickinL. So you have to be 225 as a QB to not have your weight talked about??

And OMG – both QBs come in at 6′-3 and 3/4″. Well that might be a problem too – they are not tall enough to see over the line – 6-4 is the prototype height standard and that 1/4″ might make a difference in some play one day.

If a player at any position runs 1/10th of a second behind his projected ideal 40 speed for that position – he is “slow”. 1/10th higher and he is “explosive”.

It just doesn’t end with all these measurements and comparisons.

I was very glad to hear Licht say directly yesterday that very little of what happens here at the Combine effects their decisions all that much. That its mainly just a good 1st opportunity to sit down with these prospects and start to get to know them. I take comfort in the fact that our GM says whats on tape is mostly what matters. That’s exactly how players should be primarily evaluated.

  29. armchairGM Says:

@Joe you bellyached for Manziel last year….. Ill leave it at that.

  30. ddneast Says:

BuccaneerBonzai, the fact that you can type on a keypad doesn’t make you the next Stephen Hawkin or a leader of a MENSA group.

  31. Robert 9 Says:

who the heck said stephen hawkin was that smart anyway?

    small hands. lol

I change my opinion. jameis=shaun king

imagine those two in a chinese buffet

owner be like. “you go now, you here 4 whole hours”!

  32. ElioT Says:

Maybe that’s why McClown sucks so bad.

    He has circus midget hands.

    Go Sucs!

Or the one’s who wanted Johnny Dumbass?

    Crickets…

  34. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

Crickets from Joe on Johnny Rehab? Are you serious? Joe has addressed that multiple times.

I find Joe’s pining for Morris Claiborne a more egregious offense than Johnny, but I was hoping for Trent Richardson and others thought RGIII would be a better pro than Andrew Luck. The draft is an absolute crapshoot. Hell, Mariota could go out next year, have two beers and then get a DUI. You never know how it’s going to play out

Ah, Joe, thanks for reminding me about those times.

I believe “everyone” here said Tavon was supposed to be the next, better Percy Harvin and Trent was the next AP…

  36. mark2001 Says:

Joe…Tom Oates in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel said Rodgers hands are 10 1/8 inches. So who is right?

  37. buddha Says:

The slow but steady descent of Jamies Winston now begins. He will drop out of the top ten.

  38. mark2001 Says:

Actually the whole point of the Tom Oates article was that Rodgers and the Packers should beat the 49ers because Rodgers hands were almost an inch bigger, per the title “Tom Oates: Hands down, Aaron Rodgers gives the Packers an edge.

    Not a link party. –Joe

  39. P'cola Buc Says:

talk….talk….blah…..blah…blah….all filler to keep us occupied until April 30. It’s the game tape as well as trying to discern if the off field issues will persist that will tell the tale. Yet some of the comments here were entertaining and downright hilarious!

  40. Not ...... "The Kevin" Says:

What if Joe had gotten his wish last year and the Bucs took Manziel instead of Evans.

    Dodged a bullet there…

Bucs should pay attention to which QB Joe wants and incorporate that into part of they’re research.

  41. Dylan Says:

I didn’t know the footballs were bigger in the NFL. Maybe that’s what was really behind deflate gate???

  42. mark2001 Says:

Joe, gave you that link because I didn’t want you to think I was “blowing smoke” No problem…I don’t work for the MJS and have nothing to gain. Still in mourning over my Redbird loss in the championship game.

  43. BoJim Says:

Jiminy Christmas! Joe’s afraid to know what will be measured next.

Careful Joe. Don’t put it past them to include “length of dong”.

BTW. Haters. Teddy Small-hands Bridgewater seems to be doing ok.

  44. mark2001 Says:

Regarding Manziel, seriously…if the rehab is a wakeup call, and the guy really starts to put his heart and attention fully into the game, he may turn out to be a good QB….yes, the odds are against him….but he has talent…who knows what he could do in a small town atmosphere, in a relatively quiet community like Green Bay? Seemed to do wonders for Favre.

  45. mark2001 Says:

bo…wait a few years when D Coordinators have time to adjust to Bridgewaters game.

  46. Trubucfan22 Says:

That explains that horrific fumble he had against Oregon in the ncaa tourney. Boy was that ugly.

Also bigger hands is obviously a positive for a QB. Yes you can play with smaller hands, but it’s just one of those things that big hands helps when you are a QB. Let’s not act like it doesn’t help.
