Lovie Smith had strong love for Mike Glennon today
Asked about Josh McCown today at the NFL Scouting Combine, Lovie Smith said “it’s a new year.”
And for now, Lovie said, it’s Mike Glennon’s time.
“The plan is to move forward with Mike. You look at our roster, Mike’s the quarterback on our roster right now, for good reason,” Lovie said. “Even though he didn’t play as much as he would like last year, we saw some things that we really liked him.
“Some of our new coaches that came in really liked him. Made the statement we would be moving forward in the future with him, and that’s where we are now.
Asked if Glennon could be a franchise QB in the NFL, Lovie didn’t back down.
“You can definitely say that Mike can be, you know, a quarterback that can play at a high level in this league and for us. Yes.”
Joe’s intrigued by the “new coaches” reference by Lovie. That means Dirk Koetter, the new Bucs offensive coordinator who already said Glennon has some Matt Ryan in him.
Man, Joe is running off to Walgreen’s for a bottle of Tums.

What do you expect Lovie Smith to say? Do you expect him to give up the future plans for the team? This is pure coach speak and Lovie is brilliant at it. Enough of this Lovie is a liar nonsense.
If Lovie were to come out and say that the team is targeting a QB and that Glennon is projected to be a backup, then Glennon loses even more value. We as fans want to hear Lovie talk up Glennon in the event that a QB needy team that is picking outside of the top 10 or doesn’t have a first round pick (Buffalo), perhaps makes a trade offer that appeals to the Bucs. This shouldn’t be difficult to grasp, folks.
It’s basically one gigantic poker game, especially during the build up to free agency and the draft.

that was a smart lie lovie….he’s the only quarterback on your roster, teams know your drafting a quarterback first overall and they know that will be your projected quarterback going forward until that rookie gets up to speed and don’t want to give you full value for him even though it’s not much but smart lie

MG8 is your Franchise QB, they may draft Mariota and groom him but if Glennon progresses it’s his job. Glazers are comfortable with both Mike Glennon and Marcus Mariota as the face of the Franchise. #TheCreepyCrab? Not so much. Do not rule out Browns or Eagles as trade partners.

It’s as if this is the first time you’ve ever heard a coach speak, and the first draft talk you’ve ever heard. A coach is not going to tip his hand in February. They want people to call and offer us trade options!!!

Why should this make anybody freak out? It’s actually a simple statement of fact.
Glennon will be the only veteran QB on the roster. Therefore it is assumed the job is his to lose. Fameis/Marcus come in as rookies and compete and perhaps like Russell Wilson beat out Flynn our rookie can beat out the Vet. Pretty much a no risk proposition. Lovie can keep handing out props to Glennon as his starter and if the rookie should come in and win the job, no embarrassment to Lovie as it’s spun as credit to the rookie!

Damn this guy has a stubborn opinion whether reports come out that the Glazers are fine with Winston or not. One came out yesterday saying the Glazers are comfortable with drafting Winston, but don’t tell Barry that.

But as evidence from Lovie and Licht’s utterly horrible negotiating attempts last year (and for Lovie, many years now), no one is going to offer anything of value. Be patient and Glennon will come cheap or even free. Other franchises aren’t as dumb as the Bucs believe it or not.

glennon and josh mccown had the exact same completion percentage in 2014. they had to get rid of one so you get rid of the older more expensive player. schiano is not the coach so glennon means nothing to this regime, they are drafting their guy in 3 months so why would anyone with common sense think that glennon can somehow get favor over the new guy. lovie brought in his guy mccown and made him the starter, if our draft pick competes with glennon and he’s not head and shoulder above the rookie which he wont be then why start glennon just start the future right away

Wow, the Bucs are in a real pickle at QB. Glennon is at best a top 20-25 QB, Mariota is a couple of seasons away from being ready to play in the NFL, Winston is an interception machine that is one boneheaded move away from prison, and the free agent class is woeful. I agree with Mayock, I wouldn’t want to be in L&L’s shoes. Glennon may actually be their best option. And I just puked in my mouth a little bit.

Also, this is what you expect a coach to say that is trying to get maximum value out of a player that they can possibly trade, I think they can possibly swindle a second round pick from a team, especially considering this years QB crop. I’d roll the dice with Glennon anyday over Petty or Hundley. Look what other teams gave up for Matt Cassel, Kevin Kolb, and Matt Flynn in the past. Glennon tops all three.

What do you expect him to say, “Glennon sucks. Did you see him in the Cleveland game? Two under thrown balls to Mike Evans, one so bad it was INT’d. Could have really changed the outcome of the game. I gave him a chance to be a starting NFL QB and make McCown a trivia question and he blew it.
Not online that, if he voices any displeasure about him, other teams would think they could get him for less in a trade.

I’m going to go with what Lovie said, they are moving forward with MG8 and Koetter likes him since I assume he is one of the coaches Lovie referred to. With an experienced OC finally on board to coach him up MG8 may be a good QB for us. So I expect MG8 to be here competing for the starting job if we do draft a QB.

I got the impression that it was difficult for Lovie to praise Melman and answer the question strongly. I know he wants to increase his value, but I don’t think he helped it in this interview.

Last year so many on here definitively knew the Bucs were drafting a QB in the draft…day one came and went as did days two and three…no QB. Avoid the depression folks, look at who Lovie is as a coach and a person, and then embrace Leonard Williams as the #1 pick.

54.1 % !!??! Also 23 TDs and only 18 INTs.
In the first three games of his 2nd season, 60 completions in 92 attempts, with 3 more TDs and only 1 more INT. Add them all together and do the math:
In the first 19 games of his career, ANDREW LUCK completed 399 passes of 719 attempts ======= 55.%% ?????!!! Granted he did throw for 26 TDs and only 19 INTs during those 19 games. Furthermore he was probably handicapped by an offensive line with TWO first round tackles, one 2nd rounder, one 3rd rounder, and a center who was an UDFA.
Just a reminder, a lowly 3rd round draft pick for a terrible team:
In his first 18.5 games has thrown for 29 TDs and only 15 INTs.
Hint: His first name is Mike and he wears number 8.
