Kickoff Tailgate Party At Capogna’s Dugout
July 25th, 2009No, this is not a South Florida blog.
No, this not a college football blog.
But this is a football blog based in the Tampa Bay area and Joe doesn’t mind helping his friends, specifically at Capogna’s Dugout.
Sunday, the football season kicks off in a manner of speaking at Capogna’s Dugout, 1653 Gulf to Bay Blvd. in Clearwater. That’s when South Florida coach Jim Leavitt will make an appearance at the popular Clearwater eatery to get the crowds ready for football, which for all intents and purposes is less than nine days away when the Bucs begin training camp.
Leavitt will be the key highlight of a football tailgate party from 2-6 p.m. that will also include the Herd of Thunder band, cheerleaders (sadly, no Rachel Watson to Joe’s knowledge), Rocky the Bull and former USF basketball star Tony Grier who will autograph copies of his book, “A Raging Bull.”
Capogna’s will host various tailgate food items with a backyard barbecue flavor, grilled in the back of the restaurant.
The event begins at 2 p.m. and Leavitt will speak to the crowd and also sign autographs. For information call Capogna’s Dugout at (727) 441-4791 or e-mail Jason “Mutt” Hubbard at USFmutt@hotmail.com.
If the name “Capogna” sounds familiar to Bulls fans, it should. Former Bulls starting center Nick Capogna’s family owns Capogna’s Dugout. You can expect Nick Capogna to be there as well.

Capogna’s Dug-out is familiar in the fact that it has been the place to go for good pizza after sporting events for decades. At one time they had a location closer to Dunedin as well. I went there with my little league baseball teams in the ’70’s. This place has had good pizza for years. One of the things I miss about the Bay area.
