Adam Schein Eviscerates Bucs

Popular radio and TV personality Adam Schein mopped the floor with the Bucs for their 2014 season, recent moves and the team’s perceived flirtation with Jameis Winston, among other things.
Adam Schein has had it. The popular radio and TV personality finally reached his boiling point with the Bucs. So Thursday, upon news the Bucs cut bait with turnover-prone quarterback Josh McCown, a favorite of Schein’s, he took to the airwaves of “Mad Dog Radio,” part of the family of sports channels heard exclusively on SiriusXM Radio, dedicating half of his “Schein on Sports” monologue to tearing apart the Bucs.
Schein is a huge fan of Mike Glennon, a supporter of McCown, a believer in Greg Schiano and former Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik, but not impressed with Lovie Smith and is a devout hater of Jameis Winston.
Schein blended all of these subjects into a toxic diatribe that Joe will withhold comment on until tomorrow. Joe transcribed the entire tirade for the dancing and dining pleasure of his readers. Pull up a chair, grab a cold one and dive in.
“Second topic of the monologue today: Josh McCown released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. [Loud sigh] Now in theory, [chuckles] that statement alone, if I am going to put that in a monologue of my show, I should be fired. Josh McCown getting released by the Tamp Bay Buccaneers doesn’t move the meter in isolation.
“But then you start looking big picture: Holy cow! The Buccaneers are clueless. The Buccaneers are rudderless. The Buccaneers have fouled up the quarterback position for years. Josh Freeman, drafting Mike Glennon was brilliant. Mark Dominik, Greg Schiano wanted to play Mike Glennon. They were told by ownership you have to play Josh Freeman. Oh, good! How did that work out? Complete and utter disaster.
“So they fire Schiano, they bring in Lovie. Aaawww and Bucs fans, you remember? We did a whole show on how Bucs fans were excited. “We got the anti-Schiano. We are moving in the right direction.” There wasn’t a bigger failure in the NFL as a head coach last year than Lovie Smith. And it started with him fouling up the quarterback position.
“I loved Tampa signing Josh McCown. Loved it. Thought there would be an amazing quarterback competition. You know I think Mike Glennon is absolutely a top-32 quarterback in the NFL and should be starting in the league. But instead, they just gave the job to McCown. And they literally didn’t have, in early August, any offensive guards. They didn’t have – we had McCown on the show to talk about that. They didn’t employ starting offensive guards. They had to make the Logan Mankins’ deal. The whole thing was a mess.
“They didn’t have a quarterback competition. And in theory, you felt, all right, they will keep McCown for this upcoming year. They will draft a quarterback and they will trade Mike Glennon for a second- or third-round pick. A lot of teams want Mike Glennon. Cleveland, Buffalo, the Jets, Houston. Think of all the teams that could use somebody like Mike Glennon. [Chortles] The Buccaneers should be one of those teams but Lovie doesn’t like him.
“Which leads me to this: Josh McCown released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. And then you see all the ensuing reports. And I started firing out a bunch of texts last night because I – I am mesmerized by this: A lot of people in the NFL believe that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the overall No. 1 pick in the NFL draft are taking Jameis Winston.
“Oh, good! Jameis Winston. You remember Jameis Winston? Jameis Winston: The underachieving, pathetic, rudderless Buccaneers are going to turn their lonely eyes to a person who was investigated for sexual assault. Who was suspended by the Florida State baseball team for stealing crab legs. Who was suspended by the football team – the football team! – for shouting obscenities on campus. Then he showed up to the game when he was suspended, on the sidelines – remember this? – in full uniform. Jimbo Fisher had to tell him – I mean, the whole thing, is an embarrassment.
“Flipped out in the college football playoff, started chewing out his coach. That’s the guy you want? The Bucs are in utter disarray. And you are going to turn your eyes, your attention to Jameis Winston? Let me say this again on the record: I think Jameis Winston on the field can play in the NFL. I think what Jameis Winston did in the fourth quarter of competitive football games in his career at Florida State was absolutely awesome. Tough, clutch, he can make every single throw.
“If you make Jameis Winston your overall No. 1 pick in the draft and you make him the CEO of your franchise, you should fold the team. You are basically saying you care more about buzz and getting all the tickets sold for every game. And we don’t give a damn about winning.
“And I don’t want to hear about Lovie is going to be good for Jameis Winston. ‘You know, cause Lovie is a good guy, the players love him.’ How’d that work out for Tampa Bay last year? Riddle me that.
“My goodness, Jameis Winston can’t be the guy. Jameis Winston is not someone you can trust. How is Jameis Winston going to practice and study film and prepare and walk into the Buccaneers huddle? Week One, hypothetically, I don’t know, on the road in New Orleans? How is he going to get ready for the Atlanta Falcons? The guy is immature. Give me one reason to believe why Jameis Winston is going to mature?
“So he will be the No. 1 overall pick? He will get all of this money? And then he is going to mature? Then he is going to get it? Wow. This stinks. This smells bad. My goodness! If the Buccaneers – and cutting McCown to me makes no sense. Because McCown is a guy you want mentoring a young quarterback. If they draft Jameis Winston with the No. 1 overall pick, it will be an epic disaster. And Lovie Smith is going to be the ex-coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers sooner rather than later.”

Lovie + involvement in personnel + involvement in QBs = 99% likely disaster. We need to modify the equation or drafting a QB is irrelevant.

Well said Adam. Couldn’t agree more. The Bucs are in total disarray. And Winston is icing on that already poisonous cake. We draft him, and I’m gone. Who cares right? Yeah, I know, but there are many many more fans like me who will walk over this kid. I’ll follow a team through ups and downs, as I have, but anointing Jamies D Winston as CEO of your struggling, dumpster fire of a franchise is a statement of extraordinary consequence.

That statement alone is enough to tune him out. What would he have the Bucs do? Would he keep McCown? Would he trade down and get more picks? Would he draft Mariota number 1?
All of those are dumb choices so give me Winston and I’ll take my chances. I’m tired of picking QBs off the scrap heap and losing because of it.

Glennon should have played ahead of McCown all season long. McCown never beat out Glennon. McCown was Lovie’s boy and so the job was gifted to him.
I’m not saying Glennon is the next coming of Peyton Manning. I do believe however with proper coaching and an even mediocre offensive line…,you know the line we had before Lovie blew it up…Glennon could win ten games in our division. But I agree he’s not the guy to get us all the way. I think he would be exposed in playoffs and really important divisional rival games. But he doesn’t suck as badly as some here would like to believe.
As for the no guards that is still the biggest mystery to me. Why did we see Carl Nicks on the practice field in his soft hat and shorts during August as if he was still going to play. Are you kdding me? Our medical staff sucks so badly that they couldn’t see Nicks was done. The honestly didn’t figure this out until weeks before opening day. Fire anybody at One Buc place who claims to be a team physician or trainer!!!! Acting as if Carl Nicks was going to actually play was a fraud as big as any Bernie Madoff pulled.

Lovie is in WAY over his head….I listened to his press conference yesterday and was underwhemled by his monotoned empty words…then by chance I listened to a long interview with #55 on all sorts of subject…a stark contrast in leadership and answering questions. Lovie is an empty suit that has been swept to this point in life by his association with the greatness of others. I don’t mean to be harsh…but that is what I see……

I think I’m not exactly going out on a limb here when I say that our front office is showing signs of being out of their depth. You know what they say about the best laid plans of mice and men often go astray….well, I think on the surface, their plans for 2014 looked to be tremendous…on paper. As we know all about good intentions last year, 2014 should go down in the annals of NFL history as a lesson in futility.
And now, we rest the hopes of the franchise on the shoulders of our front office…again…

The problem begins with Lovie. Say what you want, but it’s fact. You wanna run a professional NFL franchise or run a rehabilitation center for troubled youths? “Here in Tampa, we only see what we want to see and hear what we want to hear.” Much like a little child, or an ignorant fool.
Lovie is a SIGNIFICANTLY WORSE version of Marvin Lewis. Yes, there is a STRONG similarity there.

Not in those exact words, this is what I’ve been saying all along. Organizations in a healthy state may be able to get away with drafting Winston. The Bucs are still in a very fragile state. You take the guy that will make us proud he wears our uniform, not the one who could shame us some more.

My main concern is that Winston needs behavior mentoring at all. That speaks volumes.
There are several starters in the NFL I would take over either of these two, but we HAVE to acquire a starting QB during this draft or free agency, or trade.
Trades I would like:
With Dolphins: Ryan Tannehill and the 14th pick overall, and a 2016 1st rounder.
With Raiders: Derek Carr and the 4th overall, and a 2016 2nd rounder
With Redskins: Robert Griffin III and the 5th overall, a 2015 2nd rounder and 2016 1st & 2nd rounder
Obviously, the first two would be preferred. If we did the deal with the skins, we could still take a QB later, and we could go oline this year, and draft a QB next year if he doesn’t work out.

Notice, it’s the Winston guys that get all fired up about this. They defend him so hardcore. He’s the one with the tangible, undeniable dirt, yet people choose to fabricate their own truths.
This isn’t as much of a Winston guy vs Mariota guy as it is Winston guy vs everyone else.
I don’t care where he goes, I just do not want that kid on or associated with our team.

The fact all we hear about from”leaks” is they are leaning either Winston or Mariota means Leonard Williams is probably going to be the pick, or a trade down will happen. Get that smoke going and maybe some flames will come in the form of the Jets/Browns badly overpaying to come up to #1.

Schein makes a boatload of salient points as far as Winston is concerned, and about the Bucs being a rudderless ship. Not so sure I agree with his take on Glennon, although I like him, not as my starter. He is way off base on Schiano and Dominick. If Schiano and Dominick were as good as he says they were, we would have a boat load of really good players and a winning record, which we don’t. I’ll be interested in reading your take tomorrow.

He must not have watched many Bucs games live. Glennon is not the answer. McCown was due to cost $5M and he was historically bad — makes no sense to pay him.
If Winston is can make the plays and the throws, what is wrong with taking a chance on him?
He is just piling on a 2-14 terrible football team.

yeah, winston is more pro-ready because Chip Kellys offense is just a gimmick and can´t be successfull on NFL level because the pro football is soooo much different than college football, i cant imagine that both are called “football”.
+ QB from college pro-shemes always get way faster success in the NFL than guys from those gimmickey spread offenses, see:
Kapernick, RGIII, Cam Newton (with Rob Chudzinski especially), Russel wilson to an extend (as he is a real good tweener,… but mostly its about his ability to extend plays, with his legs and vison downfield.. just like Mariota..)
Traditional passers are always gonna be better because the NFL never changes and team never adapt new things that work..
I have never seen pistol offenses being successfull, helping the team..

This is such an easy argument. If you are discussing Mariota vs Winston in a general sense, for any of the other 31 teams, you may be able to make a slightly different argument. Slightly.
But for the TAMPA BAY BUCS, there is and can be only one choice. It’s crystal clear. You can see it from about 3000 mi away…

I heard the Bucs were thinking about giving out Lovie Smith bobble-heads at home games next year, but the idea was scrapped due to fear of mistaking one for the real Lovie – as the plastic spring toy would certainly have more life and strategic prowess than its real life(less) counterpart.

The reason there were no guards on the team was because of Nicks last minute retirement and the cutting of an o-line that underachieved by winning only 4 games. Zuttah, Larsen, Joesph, and Penn deserved to be cut, not because they were bad players. They are good players. They deserved to be cut because they underachieved.
The repercussions of these move and the loss of the Tedford killed the season, not McCown or Lovie Smith. 8 of our losses were less than one score.

His assessment of Lovie is 100% correct. The worst Coach in the NFL period.
I think Schien overvalues Glennon but Lovie never gave him a shot. None. Nor an OC or an OL for that matter.
As far as Winston, it’s laughable that the maturity issue is so easily dismissed by so many here… including our host. Different drum, but the beat is identical to last year.

You are completely wrong sir. It’ is ALL on Lovie. He is the head coach and the leader of the organization. Nick’s injury, just did not sneak up on them. Any leader who “planned” on Nicks being ready given the history is just foolish. Lovie blew up the offensive line without a plan in place, or for that matter backup plan to Nicks which forced the bucs to overpay for a has been Guard who has no desire to be in Tampa.
So instead of applying leadership and good coaching all the underachievers should be tossed aside so they can make pro bowls and win super bowl rings for other teams. It’ does not make sense. The bottom line Lovie and Loivie alone is in charge of this ship and he sank it. He has one year to right the ship and salvage his career or he will be permanently in the basement. Winston is his only choice. The funny part and all you blind winston haters heads will start spinning but the fact is Lovie needs Winston much more than Winston needs Lovie. Winston’s career has a solid UP arrow and he will be in the league for 10 plus years, while Dinosaur Lovie is clearly pointing down and his seat is not hot but flaming.
i know in this over sensitive political correct – group hug world some people can’t handle honest facts and blunt opposition to their agenda or opinion without labeling it “hate” but the LEADERSHIP of the bucs is accountable for every mistake they make and boy do they make. Lovie is not exempt for having to answer to his failures.

only thing i disagree with is the release of Josh Mc……Clearly the bucs wanted to do right by him. THey knew he wasnt in their future so they did the professional thing (for once) and cut him so he has time to find a new team. THAT was the right thing to do. PFT’s poll about which qb…has mariota in the lead by 2-1 ratio currently. In this new NFL…..no matter how guy a good is on the field….you dont stay on the field with off the field issues.

It is my humble opinion that Marcus Mariota will be the next Russell Wilson. Coach Smith will build an offense around him similar to Seattle’s and he will win Championships in Tampa.

So today at work I was talking to non Buc fans and they were confused that there is any debate going on. They thought all Bucs fans knew and were excited that the Bucs are taking Winston. Listening to national radio last night they also stated that it was clearly obvious the Bucs are taking Winston. All you morons that want Glennon or Mariota can jump up and down and stomp your feet all you want but Jameis is coming to Tampa. Go cheer for the Dolphins or whatever loser team picks up Glennon down the line, but this Buc fan will be enjoying a playoff contending Buc team for the next 12 years.

Ok so I see of some of Adam’s points…with the immaturity and his off the off the field issues..however as he stated Winston is awesome on the field..no doubt..however…in the end whoever we draft it’s gonna a HUGE gamble …Maroita or Winston…we do have BIG time mentors here..Derrick Brooks,John Lynch and many others..and these are mentors for him off the field not on the field obviously…in the end for all we know Winston ends up being pure gold for us..matter of the fact is we do not know how things will turn out….Adam’s opinion isn’t 100 % truth..as skeptical as I am about Winston as well..we need to give the guy a chance….period! Prove us wrong Winston!

By his account, no team should draft this guy. I keep hearing the same 4 reasons he shouldn’t be trusted but I haven’t heard anything negative since then. You would think if he was so immature, he would have done something stupid by now. We all have our demons. We spend so much energy to look at the dark side of him that we forget to look at the good. If we try hard enough we can find something bad on anyone.

THANK GOD we have an analyst that doesn’t pull any punches. TOTALLY agree with EVERYTHING he said. Lovie did the worst job in the NFL last year- remember he has his choice of scenarios as the hot commodity coach. He evaluated us, shipped away Zuttah and Tim Wright- and we ended up having to trade for an over-the-hill last minute guard- and for a couple games Oniel Cousins was our STARTING TIGHT END! Totally inept in all ways- clock management- play calling- scheme. I learned more from Madden. I literally am basically rooting for him to fail (as an AVID fan- in Afghanistan I streamed games, have a license plate on my cars, go to games, buy merch)…. not anymore! Lovie is a 1990’s position coach who was promoted like a Charlie Weiss… and he has done just well enough to stick around and be relevant. How many teams finish last and dont fire their head coach? Does that ever even happen? The only team with a more dysfunctional leadership is the Browns… but BARELY. Jameis will suck- he might start well but long-term the kid is a bad guy. If you have a kid playing football, you tell him not to act like Jameis (bad attitude- for your LEADER?) and he is immature and can barely speak English.

FACT- if you got into UF and FSU- you go to UF undergrad 100% of the time. All the free shoes grads here jocking Winston…. its amusing. He is a great on the field talent. With a terrible attitude and the best players around him for the last 2 years. Kelvin Benjamin- Devonte Freeman- Jernigan- he has days to throw the ball and regressed throwing 17 against a soft schedule. All his 4th quarter stuff were holes he was digging HIMSELF out of- man on man FSU was better across the entire field than their competition…. he has a terrible attitude and is stupid and immature. People laud his “smarts” on the field- but if I am his receiver I would not be able to understand the kid. Shannon Sharpe is more articulate. Bust within 4 years…. kinda like a Freeeman- I think he can even come in and be good, but just wait until he gets comfortable and a taste of success… people dont change-

This article is more indicting of the Bucs organization than anything. I can’t put much weight into Schein opinion because Lord knows Schiano and Dominik were not doing things that were conducive with winning.

Then he went and broke himself. Straight up contradicted himself. Said Winston wins games and late comebacks. In the next paragraph he said “if you draft Winston you don’t care about winning.”

I agree with alot of what Schein said, but when it comes to Winston, it really sounded personal didn’t it? I mean Winston’s coaches and teammates rave about him. Even players who’ve played against him rave about him. People do change and as men we mature later than society would like. And to make claims about his English, I mean c’mon why do we always judge someone on every little detail? People like are the reason I make my 13 year old son speak properly all the time because of his race and being judged. Have u guys ever listened to some nascar interviews or heard fmr President George Bush Jr. make a speech? Lol.

Bad attitude= Ripping his coach on the sidelines of the biggest game of his life…. his attitude is the exact kind my parents told me to avoid when I was playing youth sports. I respected my coaches- he was just like Dez Bryant ripping Garrett a couple years ago. Dez has sort of matured- but if you ask Garret- would he prefer Dez not rip him on the sidelines in public- and be more like Romo- Garret would say yes a million times over.

ray rice, adrian peterson, ben rothlessburger, richard sherman (shouting “obscenities” at the end of SB win), i’m failing to see this maturing process being relevant…… O.J. Simpson? aaron hernandez? the only thing the NFL cares about is if you murder somebody. then you might get “penalized”. other than that, if the player produced(or produces) wins, which in turn produces revenue, then the players job is safe. or better said, the players long term career is safe. unless winston tries or does kill somebody, i see these topics being a none issue.

RIght, but it makes him a poor choice to be the leader of your franchise. His behavior on the sidelines was reminiscent of TO yelling at Mcnabb- you do not want or need that. Any FSU fan who tries to say that he was just being passionate when he was freaking out on Jimbo (this was after throwing a backwards fumble for a TD to the other team) is not looking at this without bias. He is not your leader- because leaders don’t create additional controversy by standing head to toe with their head coach after making a TERRIBLE play (top 5 of his career) and spout off to him. What is his head coach was Parcells or Belicheat- they would have inactivated him. He is a great player, but all too similar to the TO’s of the world- and NOTHING like an Andrew Luck.

If he played wideout- I would have less of a problem with his antics. He is the quarterback- and you cant act like a petulant child (Ryan Leaf) at that position. Look at Cutler after his receiver drops a ball- he rolls his eyes. It makes him a bad leader and quarterback- even though physically Cutler has a freaking cannon- he just isnt a good QB because he had a terrible attitude.
