Report: Bucs Seeking To Cut Jackson Pay
February 13th, 2015
Vincent Jackson is set to earn about $10 million in 2015.
That’s a lot of cheese for a team’s No. 2 wide receiver.
Per longtime NFL writer Jason Cole, now on staff at Bleacher Report, that’s too much cash. Cole, via CBS Sports, claimed yesterday the Bucs will ask Jackson to take a pay cut.
Joe’s been told Cole’s report is pure speculation.
However, if the claim is eventually accurate, the Bucs have legitimate leverage with Jackson. Stud young wide receiver Mike Evans is on the roster, and the Bucs surely could buy a great No. 2 WR on the free agent market for much less than what V-Jax earns.
It’s not like Jackson’s representatives would think the Bucs are bluffing.
Big questions the Bucs should consider are how many years they believe Jackson can keep producing, and how long do they want to pay him. He’s signed at big bucks through 2016.
Joe’s not advocating Jackson get the boot from Tampa Bay, but it would be reasonable for the Bucs to mull restructuring his contract.

Not like the Glazer boys are running low on cash. Despite one of the worst offenses in the NFL, Vjax still had over 1,000 yards. It would be a very foolish move by L&L to cut VJax if he doesn’t take less pay, and a colossal failure in helping whoever is the starting QB next year, especially if he is a rookie.

You fairly restructure his deal consummate with being a #2 this season, #3 next season and an option for the 3rd year.
Dude can still play and takes care of himself. I can see him being an Ike Hillard type playing out of the slot in the third year.
Don’t screw VJax over. If you have to pay a little extra so be it.

he should take a pay cut. this is the 3rd year his skills have declined between speed and crucial drops.
he may make the money catches, but the drops are momentum killers.
If he does not want to, they may want to start looking at some free agents, at least weigh their options.

Jackson has been a model citizen on a train wreck of a football team against many predictions at the time he would become a typical crying WO diva. Restructure if you can but losing a vet of his caliber in this circumstance would be a mistake.

There is nothing wrong with asking him but i dont believe they have much leverage. V-Jax is a great #2 and has been a 1000 yard receiver ever since we’ve been here. One of the few Free agents that actually worked out. Sure they can sign another #2 but will he be just as good? Thats a major question mark and a major risk to take, especially if you are drafting a rookie QB to start next year.

Agree with Joe that restructuring under the circumstances is reasonable.
Also agree with Pickgrin that VJAX has earned the right to be overpaid for one more year IF we can afford it.
The wild card in all the Bucs financial calculations has to be Levonte’s new deal.
He’s in line for a big payday and certainly deserves it. I think that’s going to loom huge in the Bucs calculations. We’ve locked up GMac now it’s time to lock up Levonte. LD is priority #1

Ask for a paycut but give him a signing bonus for his new contract. He doesn’t have to accept it, but if they cut him then I will be pissed. We have to keep him and I think Jackson has some leverage in this negotiation as well.

VJax’s contract being deemed too expensive is relative. He’s still a good player and will be valuable for a rookie QB. The Bucs have a lot of cap space and figure to have more pending the decision on Goldson and other high priced, non-performing players. The Bucs may or may not be big spenders in free agency again. The signs point to them being more cautious. The best decision they could make is keeping a known commodity, even if it means overpaying for a year. They’ll likely have more than enough cap space to do it.

Wouldn’t be surprised if this story wasn’t a plant by Jackson’s agent to force his release. Especially with all the potential trade rumors…
This way he can go to his contender of choice-get him $4mill+ from us. Sign with a new squad and still get paid.

Agree entirely….not much leverage at all…he has a 2-year deal….and I doub’t Bucs want to offer extention in order to lower yearly amount….He is difficult to trade because of his salary…..Bucs can ask, but would be surprised….the only wildcard is how much VJ wants to stay in Tampa….because cutting him or paying him may be the only options.

Sooo the Bucs have paid busts like Goldson, Collins, Wright, Nicks(yes I know due to injury but still) and people want V Jax the only high prices free agent who has turned out to be an above average player at his position to take a pay cut. The bucs have plenty of money, V Jax deserves to be paid, if it wasn’t for him Mike Evans wouldn’t of had the season he had, and for them to both have over 1000 yards, something no bucs combo has ever done, with horrendous QB play, shows how good he truly is. People who want him to take a pay cut or get cut for that matter are ridiculous and if the coaches ownership agree, that is the reason why this team is in the dumps over the last decade. The few good players we get we tend to let go or cut or trade, and it never turns out. In the past several seasons we have gotten rid of Blount, Talib, Penn, Revis, Zuttah, all who played at a higher level this year than the players we replaced them with. On top of it we already have enough money under the cap and can make more by getting rid of some of the slobs on this team. Sorry for the rant just been a while since I have posted and notions like this are ridiculous.

$10 million isn’t THAT much overpay for being one of the only positive pieces of the offense; but $6-8 million would be more in line with his value now.
Golden Tate only got like $6 million a year leaving Seattle for Detroit. I think Vjax is more valuable to us than Tate but that’s what a solid #2 seems to make.
At least Mike Evans will be on a rookie deal for a few years. His cap number is only like $3-5 million for the next 3 seasons. So glad they changed the rookie wage scales. 1st round picks aren’t that much of a financial risk any more

On too of this, were clearly drafting a QB with the first pick, getting rid of a solid, veteran, professional WR would be the most ridiculous thing in the world, and goes to show that this organization does not know how to set up it’s young players for success. Rookie QBs need all the help they can get, not every QB is Russell Wilson who can come in and win with no name WR on his team.

It might be true that Jackson deserves to be overpaid for a season, but you can bet the bucs organization, like any business, is not going to be sentimental when it comes to any kind of contract situation. Just ask Brooks. Will most likely by take less or leave for Jackson.

2012 – 72 catches – 1384 yards
2013 – 78 catches – 1224 yards
2014 – 70 catches – 1002 yards
and he was pulled from the last game of the 2014 season on the 3rd play as soon as he caught a pass to get his 1000 yrd season. If the Bucs had a decent QB in 2014 Jackson would have been right back up to 1200-1300 yards again.
Jackson has never missed a game since he got here. He played through a broken wrist last year for God’s sake. Team captain that every single player in the locker room respects and looks up to. Model Citizen. Fantastic NFL wide receiver. Evans has said that having VJax around has helped his development ALOT.
Compare those accomplishments as a Buccaneer to Michael Johnson who will be a Buccaneer in 2015 making $9M.

Bucs don’t need to be messing with that. Evans still needs a mentor. Who knows for sure if he will go all Michael Clayton on us? Also, VJax is still producing. yes he has some drops but he still put up 1000 yds with putrid QB play. You don’t mess with locker room leaders! They’ve got plenty of cap space, especially once they cut more of last year’s busts, so LEAVE IT ALONE!

We dont have the luxury of asking stud players to take a lesser amount. We stink. He will walk and go play in New England at a reduced salary where he can compete for a SB. New England will happily take another one of our players to continue to build their dynasty.

Nicks is terrible now (beat out by Donte Moncrief), Smith is a one trick pony, Cobb is going nowhere, Maclin has only done well in Kelly’s system, Bryant is a no shot, same with Demaryus..
So just like last year the Bucs might dump a talent for money reasons, only to be unable to come close to replacing the talent level. This is what makes the Bucs the mess they are.

Bryant, Maclin, and Cobb for less money? Dez Bryant is going to break the bank and he isn’t wen going to reach free agency. The other two are going to come close if not surpass what V-Jax makes, and the other two are injury prone. Sure love to have them but would much rather keep Jackson and sign Eddie royal to play the slot. Evans, Jackson, Royal, Murphy, ASJ, Myers, Stocker. Pretty solid WR corp. spend the money on offensive line and defense, rookie QB in Winston, and this team can turn right around, or atleast have a chance to turn it around.
I could see if the Bucs were in cap trouble then sure have him take a pay cut or get cut, but come on does anyone actually want to risk getting rid of one of the only solid players we have on offense especially with a Rookie QB coming to town?

And another important point. Jackson is 32 years old. I have read more than once about how dedicated VJax is to keeping himself healthy and in shape with his diet and year round work outs. That he intends to have a long career and is doing everything in his power to extend his body’s shelf life.
Jerry Rice was also well known for the fantastic way he took care of his body as he got into his 30s. Rice might be the outside extreme example for this premise because he was somewhat of a freak of nature – but he retired at the age of 42 and was a VERY effective receiver even past the age of 40. In 2002 at the age of 40, Rice had 82 receptions for 1211 yards.
Point being – it is quite conceivable that VJax could continue to be an excellent receiver for at least another 3,4 or 5 years.

I think he’d rather sign with a real contender for less money than re-structure with the Sucs.
The Bucs have ZERO leverage with the good players. NOBODY decent wants to play for Tampa unless they’re being over-paid to do so.
This team is, and has been a complete joke. Until that changes, over-paying for average to above average players will be the reality.

Jackson comes off as one of the real team leaders in addition to being a solid if not excellent receiver. Bucs will have over 30 mil in cap space assuming Goldson and Collins get cut, there isn’t a real reason to fuss over his salary right now.
I’d rather keep him than pay similar money to a guy coming from a team with a great QB (Cobb, Thomas) or someone with injury problems (Maclin) or someone who isn’t as good (T.Smith, Nicks, Crabtree). You know what you’re getting with Jackson, you can ask him to restructure but cutting him would be a bad idea.

ENTIRE PLAYER OF LEAGUE claim McCoy is top 2 DT in the business but somehow you know better cause you can judge from couch. I think the league players and personal men know more than any of us and there is reason they have those jobs and we write on these blogs..

Some of you have missed the point. All of our Aging Veterans should be considered for a restructuring. No one said get rid of them. It would be irresponsible for team management to NOT ask Aging Vets to restructure. Where is VJax going to land 10 mil for next season? He might command 3-5 mil. If he likes the direction the team is heading he will stay or I’m sure he will weigh it out and counter-offer. Hell if we could keep him even at 8 mil that is still a 2 mil savings. The underperforming Aging Vets I would be more stern with. How much will they command on the open market but you can’t BS your way out of these as well. We could end up seeing a guy get away like Michael Bennett (Sans the Bonehead SB Penalty), he has played well but Schiano and company said he was through. Save some money, lock up some of your young up and comers that are starting to show some promise (Banks etc) and continue to smartly build through the draft and free agency. Questions: What would be Michael Johnsons cap hit? Is he serviceable enough to be a rotation player at a lower salary? What is he worth on open market (sarcasm)? Between the draft drama of Winston or Mariota, with the hot seat heating up on Lovie and the start of free agency should make for some newsworthy and maybe exciting off season moves for the Bucs!

I also think some of you are underestimating what Vjax might be thinking. Restructure at a good rate at longer terms to finalize his career here in Tampa over the next 3-5 years. He may think it smart to graduate his contract down over the next few years to sustain better money for longer. Do any of you think he will be worth much, especially long term, after this next season? Make less this year but guarantee a few extra years of SOLID salary to cap off his career without having to move. Do you think current Super Bowl contenders are going to give him more money or a longer contract than the Bucs? Not a chance, if he could command 10 mil it would only be for a one year deal and no Guaranteed money. So let’s review, make 10 mil (MAYBE) next year and that’s it or make 20mil over the next 4 years with some of it guaranteed and a proper retirement and possibly a place in the “Ring of Honor” getting credit for mentoring one of the best young wide receivers in the game since, Well, when he was a rookie in San Diego? This guy will be a respected member of the sports media within 6 years.

V. Jax has 72,78,70 catches his last 3 years. he is not a #2 WR, he is a 1A. He was #1 to begin 2015 until Evans took off. Pay the man this year. Dez and Cobb will be resigned by their teams. But Tampa needs to draft a WR soon. Murphy and Herron are not #2’s

Johnson makes $9M this year. $7M is guaranteed. If we cut him – we still have to pay him $7M and that is the amount of dead cap $ that would still count against the salary cap. So we would only save $2M by cutting him. I think that is plenty of incentive for Bucs to keep him at least 1 more year to see if he plays better and as a back up if not. He played a good bit of last year dealing with a high ankle sprain which is a fairly serious injury that typically takes a long time to heal. He also had a broken hand after week 8 so it is quite possible that injuries played a significant role in his sub par year. Hopefully at least – LOL.
He’s definitely not going to restructure after only 1 year and being guaranteed $7M this year. If we cut him – he gets $7M from Bucs no matter what and Johnson can go to another team and double dip to make even more than the $9M we are paying.
If Johnson sucks again this coming year – the Bucs can cut him after 2015 with no penalty or dead cap $ hit.

I’m curious as to some people’s thoughts on the Kraken. He beats his girlfriend and threatens to kill her. He then asks for an appeal and she doesn’t show up to the trial because he paid her off. So his case is essentially dismissed. Won’t be on his record. So does that mean he is innocent because he paid her off? So it is cool for him to be on our team? If that is the case we should try to get Ray Rice, AP, or any of the others out there that abuse people and let them know they have a safe haven here.

Agreed. He does have speed and hasn’t really had a QB to work with in Oakland. Of course working with Carr could benefit him working with a rookie QB here. He does have a 4.45 40.

If I am V-Jax, coming off my fourth straight 1,000-yard season but caught just two touchdown passes, lowest since his rookie year (tyvm Mike Evans), why would I want to be in Tampa at 32 years of age? This team is contemplating starting over with a rookie QB. I’d want to play with a more competitive (WIN NOW) team in my later years, unless of course I am being paid.

VJax will easily get $6-8 million on the open market, and the chance to play for a substantially better team. Teams like Seattle, KC, St. Louis, Philly would gladly take him at that price. They all would have taken him at $11 million per for the right draft pick. Beyond that, the Bucs are highly unlikely to find a player who matches the skill and talent of Jackson. People are mentioning FA WRs to target, but who is coming here with the current setup? Unknown QB situation, horrible team, could see a coaching change next year. Not an ideal setup, the likely scenario is another overpayment for a future FA bust.
The Bucs have little to no leverage here to ask for a paycut, just like they didn’t for Revis. We are devoid of talent so letting VJax go is a step backwards. And how does that help a potential rookie QB to have Louis Murphy as the #2 receiver? Obvious it doesn’t…

@Realist, I don’t think anyone is trading a 2nd rounder for V-Jax, that’s a pipe dream.
His work ethic, mentorship, and ability (still, at his age), are worth more than the 4th rounder NE will give us to trade him.
We don’t need to create more holes on this roster, or lose any of the little veteran leadership that we have. PLUS, we are not in bad cap shape. As long as he’s catching 1,000 yards/season, I’d like him on this team.

On top of it we already have enough money under the cap and can make more by getting rid of some of the slobs on this team. Sorry for the rant just been a while since I have posted and notions like this are ridiculous.

It’s that rub pennies together mentality that I can compare best with baseball teams. The Royals have been cutting or trading their players whenever they are set to be paid for over 2 decades. Last couple years they actually tried paying up a little bit and free agent shopping. Where did it get them? World Series.
Sure, you ask V-Jax to restructure contract. That’s only prudent but you definitely do not release him if he doesn’t budge. That #2 receiver still had over 1,000 yard season yet again and that was with a sprinkler throwing to him.
