Bill Polian: It’s Glennon Time

February 13th, 2015
Soon-to-be Hall of Fame GM Bill Polian believes Bucs QB Mike Glennon will start when the 2015 season begins.

Soon-to-be Hall of Fame GM Bill Polian believes Mike Glennon will start when the 2015 season begins.

Yesterday, the NFL world was still abuzz with the news of the Bucs washing their hands of turnover-prone Josh McCown.

The subject dominated talk on SiriusXM NFL Radio, ate up a good bit of chatter for popular radio and TV personalty Adam Schein’s “Schein on Sports,” and was hot on BSPN, Joe was told.

In a rare move, Joe watched BSPN and caught a panel discussion of the Bucs and quarterbacks, which included soon to be Hall of Famer Bill Polian — who is utterly fantastic in his weekly SiriusXM NFL Radio show — and former Browns general manger Phil Savage.

Polian believes Mike Glennon is your starting quarterback until or unless a rookie QB is deemed ready.

“[The meaning of McCown being cut] starts by saying Mike Glennon is a good caretaker,” Polian said. “And he will be given the keys, I suspect, to start and whomever they draft, with the first pick in the draft, will be the heir apparent and Glennon will revert to a backup job or perhaps be traded if he does well down the line. It makes it pretty clear right now [the Bucs] are going to take a quarterback.”

Savage chimed in saying he does not believe it is written in stone that the Bucs are going to draft Jameis Winston and, because Oregon coach Mark Helfich is such a good friend of Bucs offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter, no team will have more information on Marcus Mariota than the Bucs.

OK, that is true, but it’s time for Joe to tackle this Helfrich-and-Koetter-are-buddies-therefore-the-Bucs-will-draft-Mariota scheme.

First off, yes, the Bucs should have more info on Mariota than others. So Mariota has zero question marks? Really? If Helfrich is like most college coaches, he will be brutally honest with NFL clubs. Why? Because if he tries to con an NFL club with misinformation, he destroys any trust and credibility he has in the NFL, thus, burning bridges and hurting references for his future NFL prospects.

And if Helfrich — or any other college coach — pulls this stunt, good luck trying to get a gig in the NFL in the future.

Besides, would Koetter put his career on the line just to pacify a friend? Remember, whatever quarterback Tampa Bay takes, if he fails under Koetter (and, yes, in turn, under Lovie), then Koetter’s career as an NFL offensive coordinator is likely toast. If Koetter can develop whoever the Bucs draft, Koetter is looking at a head coaching gig in the NFL.

Let’s also take Savage’s take a step further. So the Bucs, as the Mariota Gang would like to believe, will try to turn their offense into a spread offense. But they’re going to start perhaps the most immobile quarterback in the NFL, Glennon, to run this spread until Mariota is deemed ready? Really? (Joe’s doubled-over in laughter at the thought.)

And don’t even try to sell the notion that the Bucs will break out a spread offense whenever Mariota is ready and until then will run a standard pro-set offense. Don’t suggest the Bucs might flip offenses in midseason.

As Jimbo Fisher once famously said when peppered with questions about playcalling, “This isn’t PlayStation.”

Mariota may very well be drafted by the Bucs, but folks have to come up with better reasons than Koetter and Helfich send each other Christmas cards. Mike Tomlin and Lane Kiffin are drinking buddies. You never saw Tomlin draft Jonathan Crompton, did you?

  1. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Another thing that tells me Mariota isn’t our guy is the fact that we don’t have the right type of receivers to run his offense. Does anyone see Vincent Jackson and Mike Evans being a good fit in an Oregon /Eagles type offense?

  2. Bobby M. Says:

Jumbo Fisher has produced how many quality NFL starting QBs?

  3. Pat Says:

Possibly their spider sense kicked in when 1 of the teams asking for MG8 was NE.

  4. Pickgrin Says:

i believe you are on the right track Joe. If you see the Bucs sign a vet QB like Vick or Sanchez – then they will be drafting Mariota and trading Glennon.

If nothing about our QB situation changes between now and draft day – then the Bucs are drafting Winston and rolling with Glennon as the bridge/back-up.

Glennon and Winston fighting it out in camp and pre-season for the right to start the opening game will be fun to watch the developments.

Glennon is likely to have the advantage initially as he will likely be starting to learn Koetters system soon if he hasn’t started already.

  5. LUVMYBUC Says:

    I hear you,

But you do understand that Mark Helfrich is Medford, Oregon. His Alma mater Southern Oregon University. He stated many times, that returning home was a dream come true. That he had plenty of more lucrative opportunities to coach elsewhere–but he choose to return home.

What college coach in their right mine, would KEEP IT REAL -in any conceivable scenario— when their top prospect has a chance to go #1? You do understand what that means to your future recruiting class….right? Of course you do.

You also know that-the NFL is a freckle business–And not everyone is looking to uproot their family–on a fringe chance of success.

That other” Oregonian-you know the one worth 21.6 billion (Phil Knight) has stated he will do whatever it takes to keep Helfrich in Oregon.

So if they like Mariota–then they like’em ….But I wouldn’t base my finally decision on Mark Helfrich.

  6. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

The Bucs are most likely drafting a QB in this draft…on day 2 or 3 to backup Glennon and compete for a starting spot. Welcome to Tampa Leonard Williams, Gerald McCoy is waiting to work with you

  7. meh Says:

Nobody knows who we’re drafting. I prefer Mariota, but I’m good with either QB. I don’t pretend to have information about who we prefer.

I’m good with Glennon starting out the season too. There’s no reason to put a rookie into the fire before he’s ready. We’ll definitely need to put some work into the offensive line so we can keep Glennon and the rookie alive.

  8. meh Says:

Leonard Williams isn’t even a 4-3 DE. His ideal spot is 3-4 DE. Even though he’s a beast, we’d take Gregory over him just because of scheme fit. Williams would be a total waste here.

However, we’re not taking either of them. We’re taking a QB with that first pick.

  9. Rachel Watson's thong. Says:

    Good read Joe.

  10. Bucs4lyfe Says:

No No NO…..no more giving of the keys let a quarterback actually go out and earn the start for once, I mean seeing as you have never had stability at quarterback that would be a good idea. lovie came in here and gave the keys to mccown and schiano like a fool came in and gave the keys to glennon and guess what MGM glennon did just enough to get schiano fired. no o line just like mccown, no run game just like mccown. Glennon has done nothing to be given the keys and I think if he goes toe to toe with Winston OR mariotta they both could beat him out because of the added threat of not running like their feet is stuck in the mud. glennon doesn’t know enough to carry an offense and people keep talking about how he throws and cares for the ball, how about knowing how to take advantage of mismatches and throwing deep. you cant have another guy in the pocket afraid to throw deep against bad secondaries, don’t know how you can say he reads defenses well if the majority of his passes go to the running backs

  11. Mort Says:

If they do draft Mariota then it’ll be because they feel he can be a good professional quarterback, not a spread quarterback.

  12. David Says:

“Besides, would Koetter put his career on the line just to pacify a friend? If Koetter can develop whoever the Bucs draft, Koetter is looking at a head coaching gig in the NFL.”

Which is exactly why he is not going to gamble his career on a possible head case like Winston. Imagine sleeping at night or trying to, wondering what’s next? Talent wise he might be a little better (according to some) but I just don’t see it. If you look at number/stats Mariota is the clear winner! Oh yeah, then there is that Rose Bowl game we just seen Winston lose to Mariota in.

Mariota: 2014 Stats Winston: 2014 Stats

    Comp Pct% 68.3 Comp Pct% 65.3

Yeah Winston, had 26-27 wins but isn’t football a team sport? Did Winston win all those games by himself? They lost as a team. Mariota’s 35 wins don’t count I guess. Mariota is just better, period.

  13. pewter lou Says:

I think we’re ready for “Hard Knocks” now

  14. LUVMYBUCS Says:

I’m all for trading down–It would help restock the cupboards with premium cap friendly prospects. Folks forget the best move we’ve ever made as an organization was a TRADE DOWN.

    Recap

    • In 1995, after trading down five spots with the Philadelphia Eagles to pick up an extra second-round choice, Tampa Bay selected Miami defensive tackle Warren Sapp with the 12th overall pick.

Then they cashed in their extra chips from the Eagles and their own second-round pick to move back into the first round and select Florida State linebacker Derrick Brooks 28th overall.

  16. Joehelldeloxley Says:

Since when does a QB is winning game by himself ?

Without an OL, he is dead, without good receivers, his throws are incomplete or worst intercepted, without efficient RB, there is no diversity in the game, without a good defence, all his offensive job is ruined by the opponents offense.

The Bucs are not a team with a good OL, plenty of wonderful receivers (when already have VJax and Mike Evans, Thanks God!), 3 BEAST MODE as RB, and a terrific defense and I’m not even speaking about special team!

QB are important of course but not only. Mariotta or Winston will not make the team a superbowl contender next year or the year after.

Something in Koetter’s interview, make me smile, happily smile: he will designed the offense around the guy who wil be the QB. Around his quality, abilities, which, for me, means that the starter will play all season long.

This is what the team need stability and improvment.

  18. MTM Says:

The Glazers wanted Chip Kelly to be the head coach because they wanted a high powered offense. Hiring Koetter and drafting Mariota would be the next best thing. The idea that you have to have identical types of quarterbacks on the roster is a joke.

  19. Tampabaybucfan Says:

“If you see the Bucs sign a vet QB like Vick or Sanchez – then they will be drafting Mariota and trading Glennon.”

There is one scenerio that Joe completely leaves out…What if the plan is for Mariota to be developed under Glennon and run a “Pro Style” offense….similar to Matt Ryan.
The only difference would be that Mariota can run if necessary.

Myself, I believe the Bucs will adjust to whichever QB they choose and we will no absolutely nothing until after FA…..and maybe not the final answer even then.

This cutting of McCown could very well trigger the possibility that the Bucs are considering trading the pick also.

  20. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Joehelldeloxley

    Exactly–Bring the WALL to TAMPA.

  21. Tampabaybucfan Says:

  22. Jim Says:

PLEASE – not another season with ‘Cement Shoes’ at QB. I can’t bare watching the ‘dinkaneers’ passing game.

  23. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Tampabaybucfan

Yeah, I just hope we can fortify –the defensive line through free agency

  24. Bucs4lyfe Says:

No one is gonna gamble on a QB project!!! that would also mean putting your career in the hands of glennon and who the hell would do that, it’s no better than putting your career on the line for a rookie, if 90% of scouts, gm’s and coaches say Winston is nfl ready day one and mariotta is a project then only a pro day will change that because no one has seem him work in prostyle offense. so quote all the stats of one year if you want and conveniently leave out his Heisman trophy year if you want but Winston is clearly better and you could see that in florida state’s loss to Oregon. while most of the retards looked at the score board (which doesn’t make a difference when scouting a player) instead of the type of throws that were being made….whatever even in a loss to mariotta Winston looked like the better quarterback learn how to watch football

*Citrus Greening, and the 10 billion reasons WHY we need–identify and correct its root cause

  29. Bucfan4life Says:

Buc4life you are so right. Quoting Mariota’s stats is just ridiculous. The majority of his passes are screens at the line of scrimmage. Hard to pick those off and not very difficult throws to make either. When he does occasionally throw it 10 -15 yards his passes reminded me a lot of Freeman. Before Josh went mental I thought he was decent but my biggest complaint was that he seemed to never hit guys in stride. Mariota does the same thing. I think I saw a total of one perfect pass he made in the FSU game. The others seemed to be a little or way off. Receivers had to make adjustments to catch the ball even though they we wide open most of the time. Like you said, these guys need to learn how to watch football.

  30. tmaxcon Says:

Hopefully Glennon does start that will ensure Lovie and his staff will be gone sooner than later. Glennon is a career backup that you hope never has to see the field. His double digit career losses proves that beyond a reasonable doubt.

    Draft Winston Fire Lovie

  31. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

    LUV…then let me rephrase that.

David look at the game film to find out how Mariota got those gawdy numbers.

As well as look at the film to figure out how Winston got his 18 INT’s.

Or just read what Bucs4lyfe said…

  32. Supersam Says:

Matt Ryan is a slightly above average quarterback, why would we want to draft a quarterback “Jameis” that is a clone of him? Mariotas stats are far superior and so is his smarts and athleticism. Jameis is stupid off the feild and you can’t fix stupid. The few Things Mariota needs to learn can be taught in one off season of not sooner. I’m not even sure why this is a debate anymore.

  34. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

    LOL deal with it?

    Still holding out I see…

SuperSam on the other hand is going to be asking us why, why, why right up until the draft. Then be asking himself why, why, why after the draft.

The Bucs will draft Winston and Mr. Patrick will still call me clueless and in denial.

    Ho hum.

  35. Robert 9 Says:

  36. pick6 Says:

Bobby M – “Jumbo Fisher has produced how many quality NFL starting QBs?”

the same number as bobby bowden, chip kelly, and nick saban…combined. what’s your point? how many coaches in college have produced multiple quality NFL starters? if you can name one, how does that coach’s current starting QB look? history is meaningless in in predicting the success of college football programs. whoever makes you great one season is guaranteed to be gone within 4.

  37. pick6 Says:

sorry, i was thinking steve spurrier but typed bobby bowden.

  38. BrianDorry55 Says:

    @David

Yes how could Koetter possibly sleep at night wondering if Jameis is out in the streets somewhere contemplating his next criminal activity?! Perhaps he’ll sneak a candy bar into the movie theater…or drive 5 miles per hour over the speed limit…or (GASP) what if he lets a pal use his HBOGO account to catch up on Game of Thrones!??!

I’ll tell you how he’ll sleep at night…knowing he has a stud quarterback that’s going to bring him wherever he wants his career to end up.

  39. Skyline Crew Says:

Come on guys it is Lovie. Freeman will impress at the FA and he will be considered the best FA QB. We will sign him to a 2 year deal and Glennon will start. We will draft a D-lineman or trade back. I mean it is Lovie, right?

  40. Bucs4lyfe Says:

stat goofs are in full effect here….please make it stop please!!!! i’m so curious what it is about glennon’s stats that make people think he is a decent quarterback if you want to go on stats? people cant talk about the yards he throws for, cant talk about his accuracy and if your relying on the eye test you have no credibility to talk about Winston or mariotta. if you look at what nick foles did in chip Kelly’s offense I guess he is a brady luck type quarterback too since he only threw like 2 int’s in his first year under chip.

  41. tmaxcon Says:

it’s funny how the holier than thou Winston haters continue to hang their hat on Glennon who has failed at every opportunity to grab the starting job. He was gifted it with Schiano and had more than enough chances to beat out McCown. Raise your standards folks the goal is to win the game and be competitive in the playoffs. Glennon is not that guy. He does not make people around him better or have that killer drive / instinct. He will be a fine backup for someone else but the bucs need to do the only thing that is right and that is draft winston. any other pick would be senseless. I do love how all the creative math and twisted statistics about Glennon starts flying by 8’s nut huggers. The only question no one ever answers nor do the Glennon defenders bring up is Wins and Losses the only stat that matters. You either win or lose. Period. What’s 8’s record again. Oh yeah we can’t talk about his DOUBLE DIGIT losses. Let the BS Excuses Flow… He makes no one around him better. Raise the standards and bring back meaningful playoff football. Draft Winston and send Lovie back to his basement.

Again, I will ask one simple question… What is 8’s win loss record??????

Let the excuses fly…. LOL… But it’s not his fault… Life is unfair. He was not given a fair shot. Lovie is a big meanie…. Did I forget any…

It’s time to win and stop making excuses.

    ————————————————————————–

The idea that you would have QBs with styles as completely opposite as Mariota and Glennon as your #1 and #2 QB is the joke. So what, you are going to draft Mariota and craft an offense that caters to his strengths – but if he gets hurt and Glennon comes in you are going to change up completely and switch to strictly pocket passer mode which is all Glennon is capable of? That’s not going to happen!

There’s no way you draft a guy like Mariota without having a back up that is capable of doing some of the same things so you can practice with continuity and have continuity in a game if something happens to your starter.

Mariota and Glennon on the same team as your #1 and #2 QBs would not only be impractical – it would be almost impossible logistically.

    *****************

Agree with Pickgrin on this one. You can’t have Glennon on the roster if you draft Mariota. This is why I said I would wait until after the FA to see where we are at QB. Glennon isn’t mobile enough to do what Mariota can. Hell McCown wouldn’t have been able to either, but he would have been a better option than Glennon in that instance. If we want to run a Seattle/49er/GB type offense then Glennon is not your guy.

  51. carlstoe Says:

Cam and Anderson are opposite! Anderson can’t run the read option and isn’t as fast, but he played well. Kaepernick and Gabbert are opposite. Hoyer and Johnny opposite. RG3 and Cousins opposite.

An OC has hundreds of plays available, you adjust to who is the QB. Cannon is better short/medium passes and direct handoffs. Mariota would run some read option with short/medium throws.

  52. BirdDoggers Says:

Glennon is viewed by people outside the Bucs universe as a quality QB. People within the Bucs universe, including many fans and media types, long a ago concluded that he’s no better than a back up. I think there’s a good chance he’s on the team and starts week 1 while the rookie sits for a while. I’m interested to see what he can do in Koetters offense. He could surprise people, play well and net the Bucs a much higher pick in a trade or he could disappoint. It’s worth the risk of losing a potential 3rd rd or lower pick by trading him now vs. possibly getting something better later on.

  53. MTM Says:

    @ carlstoe

Thanks for pointing out the obvious.

  54. StPeteBucsFan Says:

IF Mariota has the arm strength to make NFL throws like out patterns and back shoulder tosses deep down the field then he’s the clear choice. He’s faster, more athletic, and smarter. He clearly is a far better representative or “face of the franchise” even eliminating any character questions about Fameis. And NO this is not a racist observation. They are BOTH black. Russell Wilson may be the best “face of a franchise” in the NFL and he is black so spare me the sermons.

All the crap about “systems” is just that. Mariota is a talented multi sport athlete who can learn 3-5-7 step drops very easily. Again this is freaking football not brain surgery.

As for Fameis tight window throws he made completions that would have many NFL coaches apoplectic. In other words he got away with some bad choices that would not work in the NFL. If you’re willing to eat 18 interceptions then yes you can force the ball into some tight windows.

  55. BucRock Says:

didn’t read all of the comments above so some points may be redundant….first off, I think a system can be formulated that, based on what I saw of Mariota, can be tailored to both Mariota and Glennon strengths. If you put them in a system similar to what Atlanta has run under Koetter, I think it could work. Mariota is a smart and physically talented guy. What he brings, that Glennon doesn’t have, is his mobility (obviously). I kind of look at him as a bigger version of Russell Wilson. I’d take that all day long.

The biggest issue on our team right now is the offensive line. If we get get a couple studs in FA and draft 2 (one we believe we can plug in and 1 that might be a diamond that needs work) I think we solve lots of issues.

What Polian said about Glennon makes total sense. If you have listened to Polian you know he knows what he’s talking about.

  56. Joseph F. Says:

There are at least two things to think about. One Glennon’s time with the Bucs all depends on who becomes available in F.A.
And two is what can we get for Glennon. I know that Glennon never got a fair chance in Tampa but that’s simply because he is not good enough. Maybe he would have a chance else where. But I don’t really see him being a starter anywhere. Not to say he is a bad Q.B. it’s just he is not a starting Q.B. but a good number two.

  57. Joseph F. Says:

JAMIES WINSTON WILL BE JASON AND LOVIE’S BIGGEST MISTAKE OF THERE CAREERS.
EVEN WITH DERRICK BROOKS HELPING HIM. IT WILL TAKE MORE TIME TO HELP JAMIES WINSTON THEN THERE IS FOR THE DRAFT.

  58. Joseph F. Says:

Dirk koetter doesn’t = Jamies Winston.
Who ever they decide to pick has to be the right pick or both Jason, Lovie and all other coaches will be looking for a new job in 2016.

  59. Joseph F. Says:

    BucRock,
That was some really nice writing.

  60. tgreg Says:

Please, please, please trade Glennon so I can follow a real team and not a group led by Lovie the Liar

  61. Stanglassman Says:

St. Pete B.F- As long as you understand the Jameis’s transition into being a very good to great NFL QB is much more likely and you are willing to take that risk. Almost all the experts agree unlike your opinion the Marcus. M. is a smarter person and better athlete than Jameis Winston. I rather take the bet that Jameis grows up and matures into a top NFL QB as projected rather than the risk of taking M.M and having him top-out like RGIII or Kap and being off the field or playing injured like most running QB in the NFL.
All that being said I’d be OK with MM but I would hope to get something for moving down and settling for the 2nd best QB prospect.

  62. Big Marlon B Says:

Why does everyone assume that if a team runs a spread offense, the QB has to be a running threat. Denver runs a good amount of spread plays…when has Peyton Manning ever been a feared runner? Ditto for Brady when the Pats spread it out. If the Bucs do decide to run a spread, they can conceivably keep Glennon and Mariota as well. The spread doesn’t automatically mean option plays will be involved. Not many teams aside from the 49ers and Seahawks run read options.
