McCown Release Raises Glennon Stock

February 11th, 2015

Without Josh McCown soiling the Tampa Bay roster any longer, Mike Glennon’s NFL stock just shot up fast.

If the Bucs planned to shop Glennon in a trade, having McCown on the roster could have hurt their leverage. For now, the Bucs can say with a straight face that Glennon is their quarterback of the future and they need solid compensation to trade him.

Remember, last spring, general manager Jason Licht confirmed there was plenty of trade interest in Glennon. And a TampaBay.com report claimed it was a half dozen teams. What that means is a mystery, but the NFL is no less quarterback starved than it was last year. And it least Glennon has numbers that the stats geeks can wrap their spreadsheets around.

There’s also the Sean Payton endorsement and Greg Schiano eager to take a phone call to talk about his chosen one.

I really hope Glennon isn’t the starter this year……..

  2. Skyline Crew Says:

I’m not certain we get rid of Glennon now. We trade Glennon then we must sign a QB in FA. Will have to wait until FA to find out though.

  3. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

It’s Glennon and Winston in a shoot out now.

  4. unbelievable Says:

If Glennon is not traded, then he will be starting next season, and we won’t draft a QB.

  5. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

Whatever you do, just don’t trade him to the f*cking Patriots.

  6. Mr. Patrick Says:

    Fire up “The Cannon”

  7. Mike10 Says:

Mike Glennon is the back up QB of the future. Every position on this roster doesn’t have to be starting pro-bowler or bust, aka, start building depth.

  8. Mr. Patrick Says:

Bucs will get some very good trade offers for Glennon. Then we will find out if he really is the QB of the future

  9. unbelievable Says:

    @Mr. Patrick, agreed.

@Walkda, HAHAHA! Line of the da!. But, seriously, don’t f*cking trade him to the patriots

    Koetter loves him some CANNON

  12. Howard Cosell Says:

Lol, I feel giddy like school girl.
Like a great weight has been lifted.

  13. mikeh Says:

koetter likes glennon that is why they signed him. lovie will pick up another QB in free agency to fight it out! one more sign lovie does not want bozo #5 because it will make no sense trading him then they need two more QB sorry 87!!!

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

FA will tell us a great deal on more than just QB…..

    Josh Johnson is a FA…..maybe he’d like a redux…..

  15. mikeh Says:

    they would need 2 more*

  16. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Glennon has value….either in a trade or as a early starter/backup next year….he’s cheap, young, experienced…..

I still think he is to be traded…..

Benching him for McCown late in the season becomes the #1 mystery to me…..

  17. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

Jameis Winston’s going to leave the red headed giraffe in the dust come training camp.

  18. mikeh Says:

@87 maybe. its already out lovie does not want to sign a rookie. there butting heads in the front office I heard on NFL NETWORK! we shall see soon enough! folks.

  19. mikeh Says:

87 how when its MG and mariota! the reason pinhead lovie made him ride the pine is he was going to get killed like any other QB would with that sh**y line. glennon would do well with 3 or 4 seconds!

  20. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

    Glennon has blonde hair…? ^^^^

  21. Jack Says:

Yep, they have positioned Glennon as the #1 QB. Now, let’s see how they play FA and the Draft.

  22. mikeh Says:

87- ITS A SHOOT OUT NOW BETWEEN MG AND WINSTON ? wait Winston still have his BB gun lol!

  23. Fort Myers Dave Says:

Napoleon Dynamite might start until the bye week (if the Bucs have an early one; week 4 to 6 or so) and by then the new qb from FSU or the left coast will be ready to take the reigns and knowing our Lovie the bucs could be 1-4 or 0-5 come bye time as the Bucs will still be learning Koetters system. The only way the red head sticks longer as starter is if the Bucs miraculously start a Wyche like “5 dash 2” which is ****ing unlikely but the Browns actually started rather well in 2014 w/Hoyer before flaming out with Manziel so anything is possible Personally I say throw the new qb into the fire week 1 to start the learning curve but conservative Lovie will probably make Koetter “ease” the Bucs first overall investment slowly into the flames, thus I think e may not start until after the bye week…… But that is putting the cart before the horse; first the Bucs better nab their qb in round one and put away all the speculation of an idiotic trade down unless it involves much more than the RG3 trade which will probably never happen as everyone on the planet saw how bad Fisher and the Lambs fleeced Danny Boy Snyder and the Rams are still a last place team as they do not have a franchise qb………….

  24. The Buc Realist Says:

MGM still lives! MG8 is still the best QB on the roster! Hell, even Joe joined the MGM for about 5 minutes!

  25. BirdDoggers Says:

A veteran QB on the roster would do a rookie QB some good. Trading Glennon would leave the cupboard bare. If they trade Glennon, it means they’re going all in with a rookie QB, starting him week 1. This is assuming they draft a QB. Maybe Lovie will stand by his word. Maybe the future is now and Glennon is the starter.

  26. FanOfBucs Says:

    Excellent decision.

Anyone smarter than I have any clever observations on the timing of the release? Free agency doesn’t start for a month or so.

  27. Pickgrin Says:

So Lovie wasn’t a liar after all. Apparently the quarterback of the future statement was true. He will likely be the back-up QB of the future for the next couple of years though. Glennon vs Winston in a training camp competition for the right to start opening day is exactly where this is headed.

  28. Mr. Patrick Says:

At this point none of us know for sure. Maybe even not the Bucs

  29. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

    Pickgrin…yup.

  30. Mr. Patrick Says:

    @87
Bucs should have Glennon dye his hair a little more red to match the Uni and call him “The C

  31. Mr. Patrick Says:

    @87
    “THE Crimson Cannon” lol

  32. Eric Says:

Did Glennon play all that much better than McCown?

I know he got that Pittsburg win but there was the Ravens debacle, somehow losing to the vikes, not a good game at Browns, etc.

Seemed to be accuracy issues and easily sacked?

    Did I miss something?

  33. Mumbles Says:

Remember the Lovie system. There will be 4 QBs in camp. Will keep 2 on the roster and 1 to the PS.

  34. mikeh Says:

YUP! WHAT YOU WINSTON FANS getting nervous! cuz lovie and the glazers don’t want bozo#5 as the face of the franchise! and I know 87 you will come back and say want to bet or whatever but I don’t see it ! they will not risk it! the kid has a pattern. and lovie does not want to baby sit.

  35. John Says:

Look out Bucs fans….. Freeman is still out there.

  36. SuperSam Says:

Report: Multiple teams want to meet with Josh McCown http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/02/11/report-multiple-teams-want-to-meet-with-josh-mccown/ Maybe not such a bad quarterback after all? Sure is drawing a lot of interest already for a guy whos “AWFUL”.

  37. Eric Says:

Remarkable for the worst QB in Bucs history.

Great backup. Terrible starter. Let’s keep it real here.–Joe

  38. J 2.0 Says:

I do not understand how anyone can say releasing McCown bodes well for drafting Winston. If anything it tells me they intend to draft a qb in round 2 or later or sign a FA qb. Lovie is not going to follow up a 2-14 season by starting a rookie qb with question marks.

He is building value on that 1st pick. They are going to shop that pick and try to stock up on additional picks to build the team and then maybe draft a Bryce Petty or Brett Hundley a little while later to be the back up if no signings in FA (which I do not think there will be anything major.)

Winston has way too many issues. I’d say nearly 95% of all “Non-FSU supporting” female fans absolutely hate this guy. I talk to plenty of women who watch football, granted their knowledge of the sport isn’t great, but as a season ticket holder, there are a lot of women at Bucs games. It is a PR nightmare. I’d say 75% of all “Non-FSU supporting” males aren’t going to support this guy.

Lovie will not risk losing his job (and possible legacy) by hitching his wagon to either Winston or Mariota. Especially a potential PR nightmare like Winston. Look for Glennon to start this season with a rookie back up like said Petty or Hundley (maybe both) and probably coach the defense up enough to win at least 8 or 9 games and keep his job and make a switch if necessary.

With all that said I wouldn’t do any of what I just typed. I’d draft Mariota.

  39. mikeh Says:

no QB could play good. n line and NO OC

  40. Edward Meehan Says:

will the bucs go for a D end. Will they trade down and acquire picks. Maybe Lovie was smarter than i gave him credit for. he saw the terrible O line and when McCowan got healthy, he said let him take the brunt of the the onslaught and save Glennon for next year. A trade with Cleveland looks possible. 2 firsts and 2n seconds.

  41. mikeh Says:

@j2.0 I hear ya! isaid this a month ago on hear but the Winston fans know it all! but I just can not see lovie pulling the trigger on a rookie not bozo#5 anyway.

In 2014, Josh McCown played 10.5 games, and the Bucs scored 158 pts, which is an average of 15.0 points per game. He passed for 2206 yds, which is an average of 210 yds per game.

In 2013, Mike Glennon was the QB for 13 games, and the Bucs’ offense scored 254 points, which is an average of 19.5 ppg.

In 2014, Mike Glennon was the QB for just under 5.5 games (minus Kafka’s qtr against Atlanta), and the Bucs scored 112 points, which is 20.4 ppg. He passed for 1417 yards, which is an average of 257 yds per game.

BTW #1: Other sites have reported that the release of Josh McCown results in NO cap hit to the Bucs.

BTW#2: Other sites report that the Bucs now have only two QBs on the roster, Glennon and Seth Lobato, an UDFA from Northern Colorado. I am not sure what happened to Mike Kafka.

    here you go…

    mel kiper’s new mock, 2.0 2/11/15

1 Jameis Winston Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-14)

Analysis: I had Winston here in my first mock, and while I believe the Buccaneers will take a close look at Marcus Mariota here and make him an option, I project at this point they end up with the superior talent, assuming their inquiries and many questions into his past off-field behavior and maturity are answered and they feel comfortable. That’s still a big “if.” Todd and I discussed it more here, but the reality is Winston is a major talent, in a category with some of the big-name No. 1 QB picks we’ve seen. However, it’s all clouded by the off-field stuff. If he lands here, the Buccaneers have a nice set of weapons for him, and he’s the most NFL-ready QB in the draft, maybe the only one in terms of a true understanding of an NFL-level scheme. He’s big, durable, strong-armed and has both a high football IQ and an ability to read, anticipate and process at a very high level what defenses are trying to do. It’s not a shock if he’s not taken here; I just think it’s the likeliest outcome at this stage.

  50. cmurda Says:

From another organization’s standpoint, Glennon is a great trade target. He does have a strong arm, moves well for a goofy ass giraffe, and comes dirt cheap. He could likely be had for a 3rd rounder but the Bucs Brass should push for a 2nd rounder. Having said that, for no apparent reason we’ll probably end up fetching a 5th rounder for him. It’s just the way things seem to go at 1 Buc Palace the last decade.

  51. Owlykat Says:

Glennon has made it clear he wants to be a starter. He is the last person you want training the future Franchise QB. So trade Glennon for a draft pick badly needed for the OL, and hire Tebo to train your 1st round QB, and be available if the Rookie gets hurt. Bring in Mariota, who will show up Winston in the combine, and he has the smarts to quickly process the game and make good decisions. Winston had way more turnovers this year than Mariota and that won’t fly in the NFL. And Winston has serious character flaws that can result in suspension by the NFL–way too risky!

  52. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

If they are drafting Winston, I don’t believe they wish to get rid of Glennon. They’ll need a pocket passing QB to back him up.

And actually, if Glennon is still here, I see him getting the start and a last shot to prove himself…assuming we don’t sign or trade for a veteran.

I’m all for sitting either Winston or Mariota…at least long enough to make them feel like they have to earn the start. Make them work for it, and they’ll work harder to keep it.

“Glennon has made it clear he wants to be a starter. He is the last person you want training the future Franchise QB.”

Anyone suggesting Glennon mentor or train our newly drafted QB is an idiot. Glennon has not even proven he can be a good backup so far. Anything he knows has no value.

  54. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @lurker

SI has us taking Mariota. So we can all come up with mocks to suit our agenda.

Need a good negotiator to get good offers, and Licht has not shown he can be that thus far.

I don’t hate the man…I just want him to show he is meant for the job, and so far he has not done that.

Lovie hasn’t done great either. Both get a “D” in my book. However, Lovie has a slight edge because of his past successes.

Mel Kiper Jr.: Neither Marcus Mariota nor Jameis Winston is a franchise quarterback

“Now, he’s a third-year sophomore, and you saw his year: inconsistent, some bad reads, some inaccurate throws, struggles, interceptions,” Kiper said. “His touchdown-to-interception ratio [24/17] was way, way down from what it was last year [40/10]. Then you have the off-field issues. So all of a sudden, he’s not a franchise guy anymore.”

You should not take anything Kiper says with a grain of salt. He flips more often than a pancake at waffle house.

  58. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

And he said that about Wintston.

  59. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Mr. Patrick Says
“Bucs should have Glennon dye his hair…”

How cool would it be to see a player so into the team that he dyes his hair red and pewter for the game?

Better yet, they should have the old uni’s body painted on their bodies as a form of protest against the hideous things they are forced to wear now.

I really, really hate the new ones. I think 90% of the fans could have designed better ones.

  62. Pickgrin Says:

I listened to it Lurker – it was good info. Can’t believe how ga ga these guys are over Winston’s tape – yet they are sooooo scared he’s gonna do something to blow up a franchise. I don’t get it or see it. All I see is an immense talent the likes of which you only see once every 5-10 years – who did a handful of dumb things that are no big deal and would not have resulted in him missing NFL games.

  63. finishers Says:

We are trading Glennon for Sam Bradford !!

  64. bucs4lyfe Says:

the only value he has for bucs is trade for draft pick value what a waste of a 3rd round pick….he did nothing freeman couldn’t do in the last year of a contract and bucs could have simply went out the next year and got a quarterback

  65. Bucfan4life Says:

@J2.0 – I think your scenario is probably accurate. Unfortunately I don’t think they would have jettisoned McCown so quickly unless they were already planning to move forward with Glennon as the starter. I also agree that they probably will go for Hundley in the 2nd or maybe even the 3rd. Not sure if they will trade down in the 1st if they think Williams is good enough. Kind of sucks if that happens. All of us Bucs fans won’t be able to get excited about the future and the trend of mediocre to bad QBs in Tampa will continue.

  66. Bucs Fan Since '76 Says:

The Bucs benched Glennon in favor of the guy they just cut. It’s hard to see how that translates into a commitment to Glennon, especially since they have the number one overall pick and there are two potential franchise QB’s in this draft. Under these circumstances, it is also hard to believe any competent GM would believe Glennon is more valuable now. The evidence suggests Glennon stays, and the Bucs draft a QB with the first pick. If that QB demonstrates he’s capable of starting right away then that’s what will likely happen. If not then Glennon will start the season – and the Bucs will embark on another hopeless year.
