Joe’s not in the fairy dust crowd that believes magic dust and fresh air will transform the play of Evan Dietrich-Smith, Logan Mankins and Anthony Collins, and make Demar Doston a good starting NFL left tackle.
Joe’s already highlighted several likely free agent O-linemen the Bucs should at least sniff when the free agency dinner bell rings in 27 days. (What’s the harm of hot pursuit?)
Another one is Cowboys right tackle Jermey Parnell.
Joe can’t find anyone who thinks Parnell played poorly late last season when he made five starts, plus playoff starts for Dallas, which had a damn good O-line.
A four-year University of Mississippi basketball player, Parnell, like Dotston, was a project hoopster undrafted in 2009. He’s grinded out a career with the Cowboys and he shined when his number was called.
He turns 29 in June, and there’s plenty of speculation out of Dallas that they’ll look to keep longtime starting right tackle Doug Free and Parnell will look for a starting job elsewhere.
“He’s stepped in and we haven’t skipped a beat,” Cowboys offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Bill Callahan said of Parnell to DallasNews.com. “That speaks to his preparation and his ability to prepare week in and week out as a starter. So we’re real confident in J.P. and what he’s done and what he brings to the table. I think across the league he could start for any other team at right tackle. He’s that talented.”
“How he transformed himself, made himself, converted himself into an offensive lineman, it’s a story that needs to be told because this guy has come a long, long ways,” Callahan said. “I just love the guy, just works his butt off. Everything he does, he’s a pro. You just appreciate stories like that, guys coming up from nowhere and doing well and having a chance and an opportunity. This will be another big opportunity on this stage this weekend.”
Now Joe gets that Bucs fans might be trembling at the thought of signing another veteran offensive lineman that hasn’t made many starts. See Anthony Collins. But Parnell would come a lot cheaper than Collins, and his position, right tackle, is not as critical.
If the Bucs do continue with the Dotson experiment they appear committed to seeing through, then who plays right tackle? Joe would be pleased to see Parnell competing for that role.

Didn’t Bucs learn last year not to sign other team’s reserves and make them into starters? I just now read a lot of the same things I read last year about Anthony Collins

Man I miss Penn. penn is a beast, don’t care what nobody says I think many forget he wasn’t even drafted. This by far was Lovies biggest mistake.
Dotson should stay at RT we need an actual LT. Call Oher I guess, idk.

What about King Dunlap from San Diego?
I know this is way off topic but has anyone thought, if the Hawk will restructure (I understand that is a HUGE if) maybe moving him to the MLB position like we did with Phillips back in the day. Again, from what I can remember it turned out horribly for Phillips with a broken forearm but just a thought or an idea. Joe you have a pretty good pulse on most things Bucs have there been any talks about anything along those lines.

Joe is like Jon Gruden. Initially he falls in love with every player. If they talk to him when they get here, he stays in love with them.

All of last preseason every article I read said Collins had never given up a sack. Talk about hilarious, the preseason was an eye-opener.

Pamphile is the RT of the future, which might as well start this year, unless they draft or sign a LT and Dotson remains at RT.

Bucs are screwed for a long time, not only that we dont have good starters in the OL but we also don’t have any backups or depth.
