Mariota Has A Tutor

February 11th, 2015

Mariota2It’s the time of year when hot NFL prospects pay big bucks for private coaching and head to places like IMG Academy in Bradenton to spend every waking hour tuning up their bodies.

The NFL Scouting Combine is next week in Indianapolis. (Yes, Joe will be there mingling and mining information, and talking to Lovie Smith.)

University of Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota is no exception. A report out of staradvertiser.com in Hawaii a couple of weeks ago claimed Kevin O’Connell, who is now expected to be the Browns’ new quarterbacks coach, is Mariota’s private QB coach. And that’s fueled fresh speculation out of Cleveland that the Browns are hot in the pants for Mariota and eager to trade up (with the Bucs?)  in the draft to get him.

Ironically, O’Connell the 29-year-old former Tom Brady backup, tutored Johnny Football about this time last year — and the Browns are about to hire the guy. It sure sounds like they might be hiring O’Connell to work with QB on their roster. But who knows?

Members of the Mariota Gang might enjoy the SI.com video about this new development.

Both 1st round picks this year, 2 2nd round picks, and Manziel and id listen

  2. WS99 Says:

Their 2 first round picks, next years first and second rnd and Alex Mack. I’ll take josh Gordon too if you want to throw him in for free.

  3. Mr. Patrick Says:

Bucs may have found their trade partner

  4. SuperBuc Says:

Browns can’t trade up for Marcus Mariota if the Bucs have already taken him at #1

  5. ddneast Says:

I’d rather have Brian Hiyer than the slender built, head case, silver spoon fed, spoiled rich brat Manzell.
Joe Thomas in addition to all of those draft picks would be like icing on the cake. Even Glennon could perform admirably with a fresh No. 1 pick and Joe Thomas on the line with a new OC who is imaginative and experienced enough to be able to build a productive offensive scheme.

  6. BirdDoggers Says:

O’Connell was likely hired to keep tutoring Manziel. They probably developed some kind of relationship and the Browns will try to help Manziel along before giving up on him this soon. Although, it is the Browns we’re talking about. Anything could happen with them.

  7. Robert 9 Says:

    i been telling yall knuckleheads.

hoyer will be in tampa backing up glennon and we will reap some sweet draft picks.

    suck the cucumber bit#*es

  8. Luther Says:

The Browns should be able to get their man by trading with Tennessee.

Draft Winston and enjoy the ride.

I’d wait till something actually happens before bragging about predicting anything lol

We all have our opinions / perception. This story is just another small drop in a big bucket of small stories.

Browns are a dysfunctional unpredictable franchise. No telling what anything means

  11. Robert 9 Says:

    true dat mr. lord

  12. knuckledragger Says:

Between Leonard Williams, Randy Gregory and Shane Ray, Lovie will probably be walking around the combine with an erection at the thought of drafting one of them.

  13. Mr. Patrick Says:

What is really pitiful and disturbing is that as laughable and dysfunctional as the Browns are, they won more games last year than the Bucs have won the last 2 years. Sigh……

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Joe

    “But who knows?”

A disclaimer that could easily be on all articles!!!

  15. Skyline Crew Says:

Only reports of trading with Tenn are the Jets trading with them for Winston. Take Mariota and get on with some winning.

  16. Armando Says:

Unplug the f**king phone and draft Winston

  17. Robert 9 Says:

there are no trading partners for a rapist, thief vandal

  18. ndog Says:

So skyline what happens when we can’t run the ball? Areally we supposed to go into the fetal position just like Oregon did against OSU? So you really want ANOTHER qb on this team that requires everything to be perfect around him to succeed? If you want that then you should want us to just keep Glennon!

  19. Mr. Patrick Says:

    @ Knuckles
That would be the smart thing to do

  20. chris k Says:

Damn! There are like so many teams rumored to trade up with the Bucs to draft Winston said no one.

No, we pass the ball like most teams do. Not sure why you think everything has to be perfect. Mariota carried his team quite a bit. Back in 2013 he injured his knee at the end of the season and he couldn’t run, but they still won games. Seems like you don’t watch film nor know much of what you talk about when it comes to Mariota. Fetal position? So by that you mean FSU went into the fetal position against Oregon?

  22. SuperBuc Says:

Marcus Mariota will be a dynamic and spectacular player in this league. He will be a Hero here in Tampa and will keep the stadium full. He will win Championships here and give the Bucs a face of their franchise that fans can be proud of

  23. Mr. Patrick Says:

    @ Chris K
    Exactly

  24. feelthepewterpower Says:

should be the “glennon gang” and “mariota mob” 🙂

  25. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

Why is there NO interest in anyone trading up for 17 INT’s ???

  26. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

How do you know that fungi nails? Do you have an office in One Buc Palace?

  27. Barry Says:

Mariota Has A Tutor. #TheCreepyCrab has a Bail bondsman.

  28. White Tiger Says:

I don’t see the Browns drafting yet another QB, when the one they JUST drafted hasn’t even been handed the reigns yet…?!

@BirdDogger has it right…O’Connell’s been retained to help Johnny Football adapt his game to the NFL, while adding some WCO twists.

Everybody wants to run Seattle’s offense – yet the ‘ol drop-back crowd wants to give Byron Leftwich another shot…? I don’t get you guys (besides, the 1980’s called, they want their QB back…let Lefty go…)?

Marriota is absolutely special. I’ll take Jim Mora’s analysis over Mike Mayock on this one – while I consider Mayock to be generally better than the rest – you kind of have to lean towards information from a former NFL head coach and the head coach of Marriota’s conference rival. Mora has absolutely nothing to gain by sticking his neck out for Marriota. This is as good a specific critique you can get – from a guy who had to scheme against Marriota and has an eye for what skills a college QB needs to have at the next level. Manock’s value is that when comparing him to the field of other talent evaluators, he’s the best. When comparing him to a guy who’s coached at the college and NFL level? You have to give it to Mora.

Marriota is the pick – get used to it.

  29. Buctebow Says:

Trade with the Browns, 3, 1sts, 2, 2nds and a 3rd plus Hoyer. Lovie keeps his job. Hoyer would not back up, he would start.

  30. OAR Says:

Kevin O’Connell tutored Manziel last year too. Maybe the Browns want him to continue with ole Beer Bong?

  31. 77bassguitarist Says:

    Mariota mafia sounds better joe

  32. Rrsrq Says:

We now know that Josh McCown will not be tutoring MM, Bucs cut ties

  33. keithv Says:

I don’t give a flying Fuk! I just want a damn winning season.
    Winston, Mariotta, or picks.
    I can’t speculate who,what,where,when,why.
I just want a winning damn season!
maybe just maybe if we fill RJ. All hold hands
and pray. Maybe just maybe. By the grace of God
we can have a winning season.

  34. Not ...... "The Kevin" Says:

I wouldn’t hate the idea Of Hoyer and Glennon battling it our….or Foles and Glennon. All I know is if our offense blows up over the next two season, Glaziers should fire Lovie and Hire Koetter.

I don’t hate Lovie, I think her will eventually build a tough team here, but not Dominant across the board. I truly believe you need a balanced, creative offense that is willing to take a few risks to be a threat year in year out. Coordinators some and go on both sides of the ball and if it’s up to me, I would rather lock in some success on the offensive side of the ball with a head coach and take whatever chances I must on defense…

  35. John Says:

Browns left tackle and both number 1’s….it’s a deal.

  36. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says
“Why is there NO interest in anyone trading up for 17 INT’s ???”

    hehehehehe

Exactly. If Winston is as good as all these evaluators say, how come we’re not hearing many rumors of teams wanting to trade up for him?

  37. mikeh Says:

the only reason they even talk about crab legs is he played in a pro style offense. who cares!!!!! he is still a pinhead!!!

  38. Bill Says:

    @Bonzai,

No team would publicly express interest in Winston until a trade was agreed to. He’s widely disliked on the national level, a rape accusation will do that. It’s one thing if you actually draft him, he’ll play for your team and assuming no more incidents he’ll eventually win over the fans…..but to publicly endorse him and then not get him? That’s a lose-lose situation.

Now the analysts don’t have this problem. They don’t have fans who think he’s a rapist and will get upset. They also have the ability to use terms like “on the field” and “from a football perspective” which insulate them from the PR issue.

  39. White Tiger Says:

Anyone who needs a QB, has to give up too much to move up. The trade value is staggering, and likely, just not worth the risk. That’s why in reality, it doesn’t happen that often.

Besides, it’s a QB driven league. You don’t got one, they’re VERY expensive.

The only problem is, when you’re picking number one in a weak draft, how good are the top two QB’s if you rated them agains those that came out the past 3 years?

…but it’s not like there’s a lot of options. In which case, you don’t take needless chances, you don’t believe the hype of the ‘hometown kid’, and you do your own film study…

That’s when Marriota’s upside jus off the page at you.

  40. bucs4lyfe Says:

why are the media always trying to connect the dots with EVERYTHING….how about this guy simply trying to get paid for his services. this fuels nothing except for the stupid people that think the bucs should trade down because YOU don’t believe there’s a quarterback worthy….glennon is trash and bucs have already learned their lesson about looking for short term quarterback solutions…Cleveland needs any kind of hope

  41. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

The only logical words spoken on the whole page were by you Bucc4lyfe and Bill. Appreaciate the wisdom bros.

  42. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Im curious, can someone show me the stat that shows how often over the last ten years teams with number one overall pick in the draft have traded out of that spot for anything. Im curious to see that stat.

  43. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Hmmm so the Browns ower has publicly stated that it too soon to give up on Johnny Manziel. I’ll sit back and wait and see how some will translate that to the Buccs are trading down for purpose of the Browns drafting marita. I can’t wait to see this.
