Bucs OC Dirk Koetter explains his three-point offensive philosophy.
New Bucs offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter has only been on the job a handful of weeks. Naturally, being the insider multimedia maven Scott Smith is (hey, his office is inside One Buc Palace), he coerced Koetter to cough up insight into his offensive goals.
Koetter described his Holy Trinity of offensive football.
Two of the points are no-brainers. Koetter wants to limit sacks and turnovers. Please, someone find a Joe an offensive coach who wants more sacks and turnovers.
The one element that caught Joe’s attention, however, was his big-play philosophy.
Creating big plays.
“The second one is creating explosive plays,” said Koetter. “Your percentage of scoring touchdowns is going to go way, way up the more explosive plays you have. It’s one thing to say you’re going to beat down the defense, but you can make ‘explosives’ in your run game, you can have ‘explosives’ in your pass game. We’ve got to create ‘explosives.’
Despite the Falcons’ struggles in a 6-10 campaign last season, Atlanta’s offense still ranked fourth in the NFL with 61 passing plays of 20 or more yards. Moreover, during his five years at the helm of the Jaguars’ attack, Jacksonville ranked fourth in the league with 283 rushing plays of 10 or more yards.
Well, if Lovie Smith is inclined to pass on a quarterback in the draft (UH-gen) for the second straight year, which would be downright irresponsible for the future of the franchise, not sure how many “explosive” plays Koetter will get from turnover-prone Josh McCown.
Of course, with McCown, one is more inclined to get blown up by a defense than get an explosive play.

If McCown is the starting QB, they all should be fired then.
He should be released now so he can latch on to a team that competes with us.

If they want to maximize Evans’ talent they need a guy who can wing it down field. Maybe Mariota can make those throws but it is no where on tape. Winston has spent two years making those throws to Benjamin and Greene.

Josh McCown is likely starting at least some of next year so as disgusting as it’ll be might as well get used to the thought.

Most people will never get use to McCown starting. He is awful and its plain to see to everyone except Lovie. God I hope he can’t be this stupid. You know your screwed when the fans of a team is smarter than the coach.

Also in that interview Koetter said the most important thing was to have a QB that didn’t turn the ball over with interceptions and wanted his QB to be able to pick up 1st downs on 3rd down with his mobility. Geez, who does that sound like? (Hint – It’s not Winston)

It would be nice to see some offense on the Bucs for a change, but I guess it has only been 38 seasons….I’m so impatient.

McCown will not have anything to do with the starting offense. I actually would like to see what glennon can do in a real offense. Not that I want him as out starter.

If you’ve never seen Mariota make those throws i would suggest you watch his 2013 film. If you don’t have time to watch full games, there’s a guy by the name of MadMike on youtube that has his highlights of 2012 and 2013 “wing it” passes and tight windows throws.

Use the Cannon as the bridge to the future.
Best case, Glennon does a serviceable job and pushes up his trade stock. Maybe he earns a chance to start somewhere. Regardless of which QB we draft, the OL won’t be settled in the first half of the season.
I wouldn’t put that on a rookie.

So basically Koetter wants an offense that is devoid of McClown and his antics. Lovie should spare Buc fans of ever having to watch McClown play another game. No more vomitball!

I’ve seen the tape. Very few NFL caliber plays to evaluate. You have to disregard the completions where the defender isn’t even in frame. He is fairly accurate over the middle but not at an elite level. Winston has dozens of downfield throws in decent to tight coverage to evaluate. Total crapshoot with Mariota.

I wouldn’t say total crapshoot. I would say less tape than winston. The times he’s been given the opportunity he’s done excellent. Winston also throws a lot of interceptions at the college level. I think most would agree that suggesting either will be an instant superstar would inaccurate.

Absolutely correct.
The picks are just as big of a concern. NFL secondary’s understand how to disguise coverage. This combined with the pass rush and blitzes is a nightmare for any rookie QB,
No doubt the arm strength is there though. None.
But, if we do take Mariotta, Koetter will have to design plays that capitalize on his skillset. Same thing Chud did with Cam.

70% cometion percentage and ridiculous TD INT ratio means Mariota makes the SMART throws. If it was just 40 TDs or so to go with his low INTs, I could see an argument that he doesn’t make enough tough ones. But 100 TDs in 3 years is proof the guybis making smart reads and delivering the ball well enough to score. A lot. Add in his rushing numbers and he is fully capable of being n explosive NFL talent. I’ve seen a numerical breakdown of throws 10+ and 20+ yards out and the cometion % dropped off is not bad at all.
He will succeed, especially with an offense catered to his strengths. I see the Bucs already working towards that by personnel.

You have to go with the best QB for us and that is Mariota. Gotta take the guy with the better skill set.

All those “explosive” plays and the Falcons and Jags were where during the playoffs?
Don’t get me wrong, explosive plays are nice, but using stats to build a case isn’t always a solid way to go. Stats are kind of funky.
For instance, ‘Sporting Charts’ has a different take on ‘explosive’ plays. Their criteria, of course, is a little different. Passing plays must be 25+ yards (not 20). Running plays are the similar (10+ yards instead of 10 OR more yards). NOW, the stats show that the Bucs ranked 13th in ‘explosive’ passing plays, while the Falcons ranked 26th. Both teams tied for 28th in ‘explosive’ running plays.
And the Falcons had a franchise QB.

I expect to see a vastly improved offense this year now that we don.’t have a Div. III failed offensive coordinator running the program.
The offensive play calling and schemes made everyone look bad last year.

I would rather have nearly anyone at QB than Josh Mccown. I love Tampa Bay and I love the Buccaneers but if Lovie goes with Mccown as the opening day starter without so much as a position battle I swear I will not watch. Even Rah and Schiano know better. Lovie cant really want to make the same mistake two years in a row. I dont care how much we fix the oline or how much our defense improves. Get Mccown outa here now.

Explosive plays sounds great. Gotta have a good QB to make them happen consistently though. I sure hope Koetter plays a major role in the choosing of which QB to draft. I trust his offensive judgement more than anyone else in the building.
I expect with Koetter running the offense and a talented young QB running the plays – we are finally going to see some offensive production this season – which will make the defense better as well. Good things are on the horizon Bucs fans -hang in there and don’t lose faith.

Don’t pretend you’ve watched a ton of tape on Mariota. I’ve seen several highlights where he scrambles around buying time and then hits a super tight window in the end zone. As for..

And he has more than a dozen of them to the wrong team!!! Pretty easy to hit tight windows when you don’t take care of the ball and let it fly regardless of the consequences.
