“Fascinating” Bucs
February 6th, 2015When Joe thinks of fascinating teams, that means interesting teams, fun teams, exciting teams, teams that have a chance of doing big things.
But in the eyes of Adam Schein, the word “fascinating” can mean different things. In his weekly NFL.com column, the SiriusXM Radio host of “Schein on Sports,” believes the Bucs are also fascinating.
Not for the reasons Joe cited in his first paragraph, but because the Bucs fell off the face of the earth so quickly and are now residents in the NFL cellar.
8) Tampa Bay Buccaneers
I’ve argued for two years that the Bucs have a quarterback, and that his name is Mike Glennon. Lovie Smith stunningly refused to give him a real shot at the job. Now the Bucs have the top pick in the draft. Jameis Winston has undeniable talent, but major maturity issues. Would you trust him to be the CEO of your franchise? I wouldn’t. Is Marcus Mariota ready to rock in an NFL offense?
After a very active offseason one year ago, Tampa had playoff aspirations. The Bucs hired Smith to take them to the postseason. They were the worst team in the NFL. Lovie Smith was the biggest underachiever among NFL coaches last year, even bigger than Marc Trestman was with Smith’s old Bears team.
My confidence level in the Bucs is currently pretty low. They truly have something to prove in the coming months. It’ll be very interesting to see how they proceed.
Joe has a hunch, and he believes the beancounters at One Buc Palace have a similar idea, that if Lovie Smith stunningly does not draft a quarterback, then you will see Bucs fans in droves throw in the towel on their team. They will just give up.
Joe wouldn’t cast blame. The Bucs passed on four quarterbacks early in the draft last year; Two proved their worth in their rookie seasons. Meanwhile, the Bucs had turnover-prone Josh McCown.
In a twisted way, Joe would be curious to see how empty the Den of Depression will be this fall if the Bucs reach for a guard at No. 1. God forbid Lovie passes on Winston or Mariota and either of the two, or both, have successful rookie seasons and the Bucs continue to flop like a boated tarpon.
February 6th, 2015 at 10:08 am
We will draft a QB……Lovie gave up on Glennon……McCown is unacceptable….He will draft a QB.
A rookie QB will probably buy him a 3rd year……
If he doesn’t draft a QB…..he will have to go at least 8-8 to save his job.

Come all you “fans” that are nothing but haters.
Come on haters let it roll.
Let’s hear it.

February 6th, 2015 at 10:18 am
Ok the Kevin let’s let it roll. Lovie was here in the 90’s when we needed a QB. Here we are in 2015 and finally have the pick to grab a QB. Jameis Winston is arguably the Greatest combo of College talent and NFL potential since Andrew Luck and before luck…you’d prolly have to look at Peyton. Who won a heisman and a title as a freshman? Go ahead and gather that info kevin and you’ll find one name. The guy we should take with the 1st pick. And you can bet I will not jump ship if that happens. Helll even if the pick is Mariota it shows fans you’re atleast living in 2015. And if I hear one more person who didn’t watch the Bucs vs the Skins where Glennon underthrew Mike Evans significantly twice I will lose my mind. He is absolutely horrid if he isnt dinking and dinking. It’s undeniable. And the only thing that remains throughout coaching changes(because apparently a lock down like Revis doesn’t even remain) is a franchise QB. My guess is lovie may end up back on the couch and it’ll be nice to have a QB that wants to come to Tampa because we have a QB. Certainly stopped chip kelly
February 6th, 2015 at 10:24 am
Wish we got Rex Ryan. A coach with a pulse.
February 6th, 2015 at 10:28 am
“After a very active offseason one year ago, Tampa had playoff aspirations.”
He’s rely got the pulse of this team. Lol
February 6th, 2015 at 10:29 am
Really. Dammit. That just takes the juice out of my snarky comment
February 6th, 2015 at 10:31 am
It was clear to see for all but those in denial after the home opener…
February 6th, 2015 at 10:34 am
@Tampabaybucfan
Agreed. Everything you need to know about Glennon’s status was answered in December. 0 snaps. He will never take another one for this franchise. The MGM needs to start talking to realtors.

February 6th, 2015 at 10:36 am
Curious as to why the QB argument rages on… It’s all moot really.
Lovie is the worst coach in football. A man without imagination. None.
Watch his pressers, God forbid if you leave the sound on. Mr. “Simple as That” treats the media and fans like they are the simpletons.
Has this dullard ever had an original idea? Has he brought one single innovation to the game?
Can’t say I’ll need to wait for a response.
February 6th, 2015 at 10:40 am
If we don’t address the qb position and i’m not talking about a bum like cutler, i am out. we have to at least make an effore to land a franchise qb. not sure who is better between glennon and mckown but there are currently 40 qbs on rosters that i would rather have than either of them.
February 6th, 2015 at 10:44 am
The media and fan’s are simpletons..
February 6th, 2015 at 10:47 am
It’s EXACTLY what I’ve been saying for weeks in here Joe.
In 2013 I had season tickets. The place still had a fair amount fans at the game. You were there too Joe. It was the upper decks that mostly bare. The lower sections DID still have quite a few fans. Not full capacity, but it they were there.
When you fast forward to the 2014 season, from watching it on TV, you can clearly tell that those lower sections have emptied out considerably since 2013.
Am I right about 2014 Joe? You were there last season and I only went ot he home opener which still had quite a few fans. The 2-14 season certainly DID not help the ticket sales for 2015, it’s going to be worse than last season.
However…..
I hear the arguments loud and clear that winning sells tickets. Stars also sell tickets as well. I bought my season tickets after the Bucs went 7-9 in 2012 with an atrocious secondary. They added Revis and Goldson to the secondary and suckered me into to tickets. Some people might not understand, but it is going to take a Mariota or Winston for people to buy season tickets during this off-season. Trade down or draft some defensive player and the phones will be dead at One Buc.

February 6th, 2015 at 10:50 am
I wonder daily what our team could have done if the Glazers hadn’t jumped to hire Lovie so fast. I think they chose him simply because of his past association with the team and Coach Dungy. I also think they were remembering how horrid the team has been since they fired Gruden after a winning season, and saw a chance to take a coach who had been fired in a similar situation from Chicago.
It’s their prerogative of course to hire their coach of choice…but I did hope, for a little while anyway, that they would have hired an offensive minded coach like Ken Whisenhunt. Ah well.
February 6th, 2015 at 10:50 am
Biff….be careful “The Kevin” is lurking….
February 6th, 2015 at 10:53 am
Hell I wanted Martyball retread over Lovie Smith.
February 6th, 2015 at 10:54 am
Lovie is an extension of Dungy’s mind think. Should of hired an offensive minded coach. All offense draft last year, take that route again and despite Lovie the offense will improve to be respectable.
February 6th, 2015 at 10:57 am
Not to worry about the Kevin 87.
He be hatin’ da haters.
Bleed Orange just nailed it. We needed a coach with some measure of passion, innovation, vision.
The Glazer’s hired “Moses” Smith.
February 6th, 2015 at 10:59 am
Again, another person talking up Glennon. I don’t see how he is not getting another chance with a real OC and probably a better offensive line.
All signs are pointing (unless this is smoke and mirrors.) to him being somewhere else and the Bucs having a rookie QB learning behind McCown. Which is fine, but I think the team is making a mistake.
February 6th, 2015 at 11:05 am
I agree. Fire Lovie. He’s like an Albert Haynesworth and doesn’t care if he turns this team around. He’ll get checks for three years after he’s gone.
February 6th, 2015 at 11:07 am
@Joe: And seriously, 30 mysteries of 2014? How bout you rename the series, 30 reasons to fire Lovie?
February 6th, 2015 at 11:15 am
Biff…The Kevin goes after anyone that makes cracks about Lovie Smith. That was what the warning was for not that you need to be worried or anything. Ha!
February 6th, 2015 at 11:28 am
If we pass on a QB again, then we should go on strike. We should refuse to attend training camp practice, preseason games and at least the home opener to send a message. Of course I realize there is a better chance of me going on a space craft to Mars than everyone coming together to boycott the organization. Not saying to quit being fans but just to send a clear message.
February 6th, 2015 at 11:29 am
I can agree Lovie could be more passionate and straight forward with fans and media but he at least knows he lacks offensive prowess and tried to bring in a stud OC. That whole situation ended up FUBAR. But now we need to give Koetter a chance to turn offense around. However, for the love of God please draft one of these guys. I personally prefer Winston but either will be an upgrade and bring hope for the future.
February 6th, 2015 at 11:47 am
Fire Lovie….now if we draft a QB first…who is going to start, certainly not the rookie, McClown ?…I still think Glennon is more valuable to the franchise as a long term back up..hence…cut McClown…Glennon starts the season….Winston/Mariota sits and watches 5-6 games…still need to sign or draft a #3 QB
February 6th, 2015 at 11:51 am
Just wish the draft was here already. Every passing day I hear about that buffoon Liar Smith and the Bucs No. 1 Overall pick, the more ways I see him screwing it up. I would think the Glazer twins would tie his hands, but do they really care about this franchise anymore? Look at what they their players wear this season. They’ll continue making money regardless.
February 6th, 2015 at 12:01 pm
The buzzards were all a buzz when Reggie Bush had to give back his Heisman. Think anybody would give a care if Lovie Smith gave back his contract?

February 6th, 2015 at 12:15 pm
Ok, directly to the “experts” who say fire Lovie: Name me a coach, a winning coach, who would be willing to come to Tampa knowing the three coaches before him only lasted two years each? My guess is even if hes good(which I doubt) you’ll all want him fired right away too if we’re not 10-6 first year out. No one is turning this team into a contender overnight. Give a guy some time for crying out loud! I am embarrassed by this fan base!
February 6th, 2015 at 12:16 pm
Adam Schein looks like one of those characters you want to avoid when you go shopping for an used auto, high end furniture or perhaps a refinance of your house with less than stellar credit……
February 6th, 2015 at 12:31 pm
Lovie has more knowledge than all of you combined
I think we should get a QB. I don’t even care who. Just as long as it’s not mclown.
Lovie is a good coach and every player and analyst will say the same. So all you haters are absolute idiots that shouldn’t be allowed to breathe.
Just throw insults at anything and everything the bucs do. Nothing will be good enough for you hating as* haters.
You all actually expect every move that’s made to be the best move or pick in history of sports. After one draft you all would throw lovie out the door as if coaches are lining up to come to tampa.
We should be lucky to have a well respected coach here.
You bunch of stupid morons. Go hang yourselves (just the haters). We real fans will support out team. The rest can F off.
February 6th, 2015 at 12:35 pm
@Joe
DO NOT underestimate the number of Bucs fans that DO NOT want the Bucs to draft either one of these QB’s
February 6th, 2015 at 12:36 pm
Tell Lovie I said hi, “the kevin”.
You may want some kneepads and some chapstick while you are down there. Don’t forget to cup the balls.
February 6th, 2015 at 12:37 pm
Lovie does have to knowledge…hell all coaches have the knowledge….Lovie can not motivate, which is part of coaching. This was perfectly clear in the home opener when the team came out flat and listless….Lovie will never get this team past mediocre with occassional teases of better things to come. He might as well HC from the booth on game day !
February 6th, 2015 at 12:42 pm
Lovie is not a good coach. Good coaches have win at least 50% of their games against above .500 teams and make the playoffs in at least 50% of their seasons. Lovie is in the 30’s for both. He’s a mediocre coach plain and simple. I’m glad some people like The Kevin strive for mediocrity, some of us want to do better.
February 6th, 2015 at 12:54 pm
@lurker
Well said, Sir.
February 6th, 2015 at 1:00 pm
I’ve been screaming it from the mountain tops since the rumor of the Bucs signing Lovie hit he media, this will be the eorst head coaching decision ever made by the boys, worse than Morris, worse than Schiano, Lovie is quiet simply, a moron who’s career highlights were based on other peoples genius not his own, remember a movie from some years back called “Being There” Lovie is Chauncey Gardner….a simpleton who just by fate happens to be in the right spot at the right times, and for whatever reasons, people believe the word salad he spews because it’s so simple and plain spoken….
February 6th, 2015 at 1:00 pm
I’m not for firing anybody after 1 year but if there was ever a case to be made for firing a coach after 1 year, this would be it. I dont care about what Lovie did in Chicago or anywhere else. I dont care about all his experience. None of that experience did a damn thing for him last year. He looked lost, and completely inept and his team followed suit. He was thoroughly out coached by just about everybody we played. He HAS to improve big time next year. You are crazy if you dont think he is on the hot seat. Glazers brought him here with the intention of improving the team over the imbeciles we had before him. I bet you anything not in their wildest dreams did they imagine Lovie would be worse than Schiano and Raheem. Hopefully he proves me wrong but so far I see absolutely no reason to think he’s going to be better next season. Picking Winston would be a nice way to start showing he knows what he’s doing.
February 6th, 2015 at 1:13 pm
In a twisted way, Joe would be curious to see how empty the Den of Depression will be this fall if the Bucs reach for a guard at No. 1.
**************
That would be beyond idiotic. There are no guards that should go #1. Now if you wanna talk about OT maybe. However, I could see Leonard Williams going #1 to us.
February 6th, 2015 at 1:13 pm
Joe see this is what bothers me. Why write off winston? He does not have to be the ‘CEO of the franchise’. He just has to go in and play QB. Its not like he has to be responsible for the financial well being of the team. What I’m saying is not every Qb needs to come in and be P. Manning. Just play qb, shouldn’t be this complicated. He stole crab legs in college, big f@$%ing deal
February 6th, 2015 at 1:24 pm
Every time @The Kevin posts. I laugh. Hatin haters, haters, i hate haters. Lol dude stop

Mathematics would tell us otherwise. The sampling error is about 3% for a poll of 1,000 people. So you could poll a million people and you wouldn’t get over 20%.
February 6th, 2015 at 3:32 pm
@Mr. Patrick
NTM, JoeBucsFan is a skewed sample of supposedly knowledgeable fans. The average fan would want us to draft someone they’ve heard of which would skew heavily in the favor of Winston or Mariota.

joe twists that into the bucs have to use the 1st pick in the draft on a QB.
WTF?
February 6th, 2015 at 4:03 pm
I don’t want either QB. mariota is about as big as snookie on roids, and winston will blossom into the next shawn king at the chinese buffett….not even mentioning the character issues.
trade down. it’s not sexy, but then again the winners in FA and the teams that make the tough calls are the ones playing in the playoffs.

u mad, bro?
i didn’t want/like the lovie hire. i posted the article that showed lovie’s pathetic record vs teams over .500 and poor record vs teams at .500. i wanted an offensive minded coach. after making all the changes he wanted, spending the cap, etc he had a worse record. he is on the hot seat no matter how you don’t want him to be.
also, there are 32 nfl head coaching gigs in the world! that is it. if you do not think that the bucs can find someone that wants this gig, you are mistaken. we are not the raiders, yet.
ps why was lovie fired from the bears with a 10-6 record? look up the articles and fan sites, it is the same stuff as here.
February 6th, 2015 at 5:38 pm
I am just glad we have the number one pick and a gamblers shot at picking one that could be the franchise for years to come. The Bucs have never had a franchise QB and now, we finally have a chance to get one. This is wonderful. Lovie is maybe not the best coach, but the OC and DC are more critical to success anyway and I think we are ok on that front. Frazier got the defense working at the end of the season and it will be better next year. Koetter will be an excellent addition, he knows what he is doing I didn’t expect Lovie to come in and change everything the first year and when an avalanche of horrible circumstances and failed FA’s doomed the season, that was hard to suffer through. Ok fine, but now we have the first pick, so I am happy for the moment and optimistic about the future.
February 6th, 2015 at 6:02 pm
We all wanted an offensive minded coach. But the Glazers had to make the appeasement hire after Schiano/Raheem so people didn’t lose their mind, hence safe, boring Lovie. Hiring some no name co-ordinator would not have worked for them, even if it would have been better long term.
February 6th, 2015 at 6:34 pm
A cadaver’s left testicle has more life in it (and would make a better head coach) than Lovie Smith!
I’m excited for Mariota but (all the more reason to take him, who cares if he needs a year or so to develop) we’re still gonna suck! Let’s be reasonable here, we just lost a bunch of close games last year largely due to lack of discipline and the team finding ways to lose. That’s on the HC! We all saw in the SB what a bone-headed (only if it fails I know, but nonetheless) coaching call can do… and that’s Seattle. They have GOOD coaching! lol Lovie’s a complete moron. So, in reality, anyone expecting us to suddenly flip a switch and become a powerhouse is going to be very disappointed. We need to be thinking long term success, not all-or-nothing next year. Take Marcus, bolster the lines, take BPA once needs are met. Chip Kelly has a couple years left on his deal in Philly… by that time Lovie will have exhausted his seemingly endless supply of excuses.
Kelly + Mariota + solid Bucs D (by then) = an exciting team to watch and be proud of.

February 6th, 2015 at 9:00 pm
everyone.. Look at most of the successful teams. You need at least a capable quarterback. We don’t have a dominating running game or defense to even out having such bad qb. Our o line also doesn’t help either (draft me some of that). with a good qb at least you have a chance of winning more games than not

hey joe ok so you said the glazers will make the first pick but still we have a gm in place so are you really saying he is that powerless that all the blame and credit is going to go to lovie for every draft success and failure like it did in free agency….no one is really blaming licht and no one is really giving him credit. if he is the gm it would seem that he’s just a figure head because apparently he isn’t making any decisions around here. just sayin and on a side note I would love it if the bucs brass were split on mariotta and Winston, lovie wanting mariotta and licht wanting Winston hahaha now that would firing lovie that much more easy if his pick didn’t work out
