Stop Playing Maxwell Smart!

January 30th, 2015

????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

The dot connecting sect of the Marcus Mariota Gang erupted in glee yesterday when Adam Schefter became the second BSPNer in recent weeks to knight the Oregon quarterback as the first overall pick in April’s draft.

Never mind that Mariota hasn’t been interviewed by the Bucs. Never mind he has a bum shoulder. Never mind he hasn’t had a pro day. Never mind he has never diagrammed a play for the Tampa Bay. Never mind the NFL Scouting Combine is a month away.

This dot-connecting (without the dots) tmany Bucs fans are enamored with irks Andrew Astleford of Fox Sports Florida. Hold up, Astleford said, this anointing of Mariota is premature jocularity.

But a rush to understand doesn’t always include wisdom.

Say the hires of Koetter and Bajakian mean the Bucs have chosen to make Mariota the top pick. Would it not be concerning that Lovie Smith and Jason Licht made up their minds after brief looks in Pasadena, California, and Arlington, Texas? Would it not be concerning that they made their choice before deeper scouting and the chance to use each possible tool at their disposal prior to draft day?

A rushed process would be no right way to approach the most important choice of their time together, a choice that may make or break their regime in Tampa. It would be like buying a house sight unseen. It would be like entering into marriage with someone after a coffee date at Starbucks. It would be silly and reckless, especially considering the pair must produce fast after the 2-14 failure last season.

Astleford is right on the money except for one small element. Joe actually thinks if the Bucs do draft a quarterback, then it would buy Lovie Smith another year.

If the Bucs don’t draft a quarterback, stick with turnover-prone Josh McCown, and have another season that smells like a port-a-potty in July, then Lovie is in deep s(p)it.

Of course, this doesn’t apply to your daily nugget telling us which former B-list QB endorses Winston, right?

To me, this shows this guy has only watched three games himself. I’m sure the Bucs have already reviewed every game each quarterback has played in their career.

So Andrew Astleford of Fox Sports Florida has done nothing but show his ignorance. And, frankly, I’m seeing just as many fans saying the pick is Winston…which kind of makes this hypocrisy.
Every year we hear about how, if a team has really done their research, the combine and pro days should mean very little.

  3. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Really, the debate isn’t on who it willl be at this point, but rather, who it should be.

The visually impaired say it shold be Winston. The fans with foresight say it should be Mariota.

Honestly, even though I believe Winston will be a bust, if the Bucs pick him I will pray for him to become a HoFer.

  4. Chris Says:

Wow you really hate this kid, you always point out anything negative you can find on him. You also say all the scouts and national reports are wild to think the Bucs should take him over Winston. If we draft Mariota I hope someone tells him to ready how much you doubted him,

That’s classic, if somebody disagrees with you, insult them.

Actually, for those that have actually watched the two QBs play, the obvious choice would be Winston. I wanted Mariota to be our pick all season long, and then I began to dig a little deeper, and deeper, and deeper…now I’m not so sure Mariota is much better than a late 1st round pick at best. The tape doesn’t lie. Compare both QBs on draftbreakdown.com film and anybody that ISN’T visually impaired, will be able to clearly see the difference between the two players.

    Bonzai,

    Lol you’re crazy.

  8. Eric Says:

Lovie isn’t thinking about “buying another year”.

The Glazers are aware of the total disaster he inherited and are going to give the man the time he needs.

He’s going to take the best player for the team, pure and simple. Just like he did last year with Evans.

They didn’t focus on evans till after his pro day. Silly to think they have made up their minds.

  9. Tom Edrington Says:

Wondering if Vegas has established an Over/Under on:

    1. Number of “Jameis Watch” posts still to come between now and the draft.

    2. Number of negative Mariota posts still to come between now and the draft.

  10. Jacko101 Says:

I don’t know who they will draft; however we can safely consider Winston, Mariota, or Williams. Lovie did say his draft board was complete. Joe doesn’t want to admit it but Mariota seems to lead the pack. The Bucs can’t afford to draft Winston with all the previous draft busts. I’d bet on Winston or Williams depending on FA and possible trades.

  11. Lev Says:

Heard Lovie Smith farted today. Clear sign they will go with Mariota.

  12. David Says:

Or, is it possible that they watched the 3years of game film and figured him throwing and running around at the combine doesn’t change too much when it comes to his “on & off the field abiltities & behavior. He already has Jameis beat in both categories if you ask me. Now it’s just a matter of waiting to see if anyone drops a boatload of picks and players for the first overall pick that is irresistible to any team.

  13. Phil Says:

My only question is why haven’t we signed Jameis Winston to a contract yet? He will be the Bucs number one pick.

“That’s classic, if somebody disagrees with you, insult them.”

Acknowledging a disability is not “insulting”. As to ” people who have watched games” with both QBs, I have. All this season and a good portion of last season. Before the draft, I will have watched them all.

And I don’t just watch them. I analize them, rewindand look for reasons for things. I doubt anyone else here does that. In fact, I would guess that few media guys do as much effort as I have.

Case in point, this article. The guy obviously only watches a few games, then relies on the combine and pro days.

You yourself may have started off liking Mariota, but I would guess the words of these opinionated media guys who have not shown the dedication to really determine things for themselves have gradually turned you toward Winston. You claim to have watched games, and I believe you. But did you watch each game more than once, rewind certain plays ans pick them apart? I have.

That’s why I can tell you that Winston throws into tight windows (the obvious opinion) and the reason for it (what most media guys and fans miss). Is he just good, or is there a reason those windows were always so tight?

This is what goes above the heads of fans and plenty of media guys.

Someone once said, “If you hear a lie often enough, even if you start off knowing it is a lie, you may become programmed to believe it is the truth.”

I can give several examples, but here is the best. “God helps those who help themselves.” is the most quoted Bible verse in history, seconded by John 3:16. But the truth is? It isn’t even in the Bible. In fact, it contradicts everything God says. He tells us to depend upon him.

Yet people THINK the Bible says that. Hear a lie often enough and you’ll believe it is truth. I’m not trying to make this about religion though. There are other examples.

Take the whole “Barack Obama” is not an amaerican and never showed his birth certificate” thing. Common sense tells us you cannot become president without proving your citizenship, yet there are plenty who believe the statement. Even though it was proven to be a lie.

This is the case with Winston. We are being told he has the brighter future, that he is more NFL ready. We are told that over and over by the same people, or by people repeating what they say. Hear a lie often enough and youmay become convinced it is truth.

Take the whole NFL ready thing. Last I checked, NFL offenses, even in this new quarterback friendly league, do not run 4 wide recievers 87 percent of the time. But the media has convinced us Winston played an NFL style offense.

He’s a pocket passer. Period. But take a look at the new generation of quarterbacks in the NFL. Luck, Bridgewater and Carr are pocket passers (and they all show lots of promise). That’s what the media and fans expect from an NFL offense.

But, by the same token, just as many mobile quarterbacks are finding success in the NFL in this s new generation.

So, the opinions are subjective. And people use misdirection to sway public opinion. The only problem is, public opinion is rarely right, except in the most obvious circumstances. Luck was obvious.

Yet, throughout NFL history, the fans, media and teams have been wrong more than right. Flacco. Wilson. Brady.Newton. Warner.

I could name a ton of quarterbacks that were judged non-first-round worthy, yet they ended up being among the best…more so than the popular choice.

  16. Barry Says:

I knocked the $&tch out, I heard her moaning. I took that as a yes. #FaceOfTheFranchise

  17. Hawk Says:

    Recently, Lovie said,
“We got the chance to see two potential guys that maybe are going to be high draft picks…”
Strange that he didn’t say #1 for either. Seems to me, that just for ‘smoke and mirrors’, he would have hinted that they were both worthy of the #1 pick.
Either Lovie doesn’t know how the ‘smoke and mirrors’ game works, he forgot to ‘play’ when questioned about these QBs, OR, he has already decided on a different player/direction. With Lovie, who knows?

  18. Bird Says:

Have to agree here joe. U have been completely one sided. Love your articles . In the website 15 times plus a day. We ll have to wait on mariota. I am sure he is working with someone On snaps and footwork on pro ready offense. I will say this – watched Aaron Rodgers in last few games in playoffs and he didn’t take one snap from center. He took all plays in shotgun in spread type offense. Matt Ryan also ran a lot of same style. I think drafting mariota does give lovie more time. Maybe give mariota a few games before starting to learn pro system. Just to worried that Jameis is another kid with 2 cent head aka Johnny manziel who u were high on last year if I remember. We all want best for bucs. Been a fan my whole life so hopefully we get this right.

  19. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Eric, I agree with you as far as the time Lovie has.

In fact, I would take it a step further and say that the Glazers may have finally learned that constant turnover in head coaches doesn’t allow time to develop a team. I think, unless we see three seasons 3 wins or less, they wilo give Lovie at least five years total.

Some coaches are hired for the long hall. Like Marvin Lewis. Like Lovie was in Chicago.

I think the Glazers not only WANT to establish stability they NEED to establish stability. Even if Lovie fails, if they want to get a good coach to replace him, they’ll have to show he had ample time to get the job done.

The Bucs have had ten years of the team being developed in the wrong direction. It will take at least 2-3 years to right the ship. But once it is, things will be blockbuster.

  20. Luther Says:

Bonzai you are not the only one. Stop acting like you are the only person willing to dig deep. I’ve watched hours of them both and it’s not close. Winston is the better qb. I wanted Mariota but the tape says Winston.

  21. Joe Says:

@Bird & others – Joe has presented numerous pro-Mariota posts. And, Joe is on record saying he’d be just fine with the Bucs picking Mariota. However, Winston is Joe’s first choice, and Joe’s not going to back off from that.

Heck, just two days ago, Joe delivered a current pro-Mariota take from Father Dungy, from Joe’s exclusive conversation with him at the NBC meet and greet in Phoenix. https://www.joebucsfan.com/?p=130746

Why would Joe post such a thing if Joe were waging a propaganda war?

  22. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

“And I don’t just watch them. I analize them, rewindand look for reasons for things. I doubt anyone else here does that. In fact, I would guess that few media guys do as much effort as I have.”

    @Bonzai

Damn, you are amusing. Are you or have you ever been paid or hired professionally to “analyze” players?

If not, you are an amateur, just like everyone else here. Stop deluding yourself into thinking your opinion matters more than anyone else.

It matters, but, no more than anyone else. Regardless of how much you use the DVR.

I’m assuming you are using all 22 film, right? lol

  23. Winston4Mayor Says:

    Mariota= Mark Sanchez/Alex Smith/Kolin Kappernick

    Winston=Ben Rothlesburger/Donte Culpepper/Steve Mcnair

    Who would you rather have??

  24. jb Says:

Has Mariotta ever seen a playbook? From what I understand, he didn’t have one in Oregon. Why in heII would a team invest a #1 pick in a guy that needs to learn as much as it looks like he does. I call bullspit on any rumors that the Bucs are even remotely considering picking him. He might end up not even being taken in the first round! We’re supposed to pick him because he’s a good guy? Let Arthur Blank and the Falcons do that. Just look at their roster. They have 3 or 4 quality players and that’s about it….yet they hung 56 on us last season, what’s that say about the help we need? Mariota is NOT the way to change the losing culture here! If we’re not gonna take Winston, and I’m still not sold that we should, don’t waste this franchise turning pick on Mr. Nice Guy.

  25. ndog Says:

Like always none of this matters. The bottom line is who can play and when that question is asked there is only one answer and it isn’t the one read and run qb.

  26. biff barker Says:

Meh, this debate will rage on… and on… and on.

What we do know is that Lovie has at least this season to turn things around and this falls firmly on Koetter and staff. F

Bird, saw somewhere recently that 70% of all snaps are from the gun now. Rogers had the bum ankle which may have been a factor.

  27. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

Joe has increased Mariota’s status his followers now have a moniker…Mariota “gang”….so we now have “mob vs gang”……..begs the question what are McCown’s followers called…”mom and dad”

  28. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

    Jameis =’s Shug

  29. Lefty Says:

So are the people that think, believe in or want Mariota who use the argument that it buys Lovie more time really comfortable with that rationale? To me that is the worst scenario of all, the proverbial ‘double whammy’..

  30. ndog Says:

Ask your self who is more accurate, more powerful arm, better leader, winner if national champ, tougher, more firey. The other is a better runner and is quite/ timid leader. Boy that sounds like a good debate. This discussion is a joke.

  31. flmike Says:

There is no denying either QBs talent, they both have skill sets unique to themselves, now the question becomes can we coach Mariota to up to become an NFL QB, one who can take snaps flawlessly from under center, one who can quickly read defenses and make the correct decisions based on what he has read pre-snap. On the flip side, can we teach Winston how to be an adult and how make adult decisions on and off the field to the point where he won’t embarrass himself and the franchise. In all my experience, you cannot teach someone how to be an adult, it has to come naturally, and I don’t see it happening anytime soon with this kid.

  32. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

ndog…Winston is hit and miss on the field…in 2013…he was surrounded by NFL talent vs the college ham and eggers they went up against…flash forward 2014…17 bone head INT’s

  33. ndog Says:

And still lost the same amount of games as Mariota, with a 104th ranked running game and below average defense. That’s what great players do they carry their teams on their back. That is something that Mariota has not and CANNOT do.

  34. Nybucsfan Says:

@ joe did Jason say the draft board was set before the end of the season? And wasn’t it you who was saying that who they hire will say a lot about the player they will pick? So now that isn’t pointing at Jameis( the hunting ground)Winston you no longer believe that to be true

  35. Chef Paul Says:

An old wise adage Bonzai might find benificial.

“it’s not close. Winston is the better qb… the tape says Winston.”

Agreed Luther. The combine measurements and stop watch readings aren’t going to mean that much. Yes Mariota will run a nice 40 time (if he runs) and should be able to demonstrate he can make all the throws (if he throws) – but there is a lot of game tape on both players. When you break down the tape – Only 1 of these QBs consistently demonstrates what NFL throws and NFL decision making looks like while playing College football.

Im playing MadMax smart. Too many holes in the trenches. The “SMART” pick is Leonard Williams or trade back and get some O line (I’d even be happy with Amari Cooper to replace Vdrops).

  44. bucrightoff Says:

All this arguing over Winston and Mariota and having two factions of the fanbase hate each other…good news is the two sides will come together once the Bucs draft Leonard Williams.

  45. Eric Says:

Hey if Marcus is the guy it could turn out great.

He surely is an electric college player.

Good argument could be made that a man with his mobility would be very useful behind our line.

In other words, can’t have a pocket passer without a pocket.

I’m all over the lot. Get more confused as time goes on………..

  46. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Yes…..we should absolutely wait on the final decision…..however, it is possible to eliminate a prospect early…..it is done all of the time….a player being taken “off the board”…..

I’m just saying without playing “Maxwell Smart” that the Glazers could have sent word down that Winston ain’t gonna happen….and that it’s either Mariota or a trade….and Bucs are preparing for that….

  47. Stpetebucsfan Says:

    @BucBonzai

I think the Glazers not only WANT to establish stability they NEED to establish stability.

Amen brother! That is spot on! And as L&L have repeatedly told us we have the QB of the future!

QB is not a beauty contest! It’s not about who can throw the ball the farthest, run the fastest etc. It’s about who can play when the lights come on and people are flying around the field like their careers depended it…which they do!

MG8 is perhaps the least glamorous QB in the league. Napoleon Dynamite for gawds sake. He’s a statue in the pocket and probably couldn’t out run half the posters on this blog. But as tckdr repeatedly points out with the stats he HAS performed on the field. Spare me the accuracy on long passes yadda yadda. How many times did we watch Buc receivers almost have to come to a dead stop when rubber band armed Jeff Garcia threw deep. But Garcia somehow managed to carve out a solid NFL career.

I understand the concern about MG8 being no more successful than a Garcia type who can get to the playoffs and maybe past the first round but lacks the talent to get us all the way home. But let’s at least find out.

If ever a kid deserved a chance it’s Glennon. His stats compared to all the other QB’s SCREAM for a shot. He had the Bucs in position to win at least two more games last year if we had even a mediocre defense at the time.

Trade down and pick up Andrus Peat or Scherff and a starting RG with the next pick. Take the half dozen extra picks and fill needs.

Glennon has played through JFro meltdowns, MRSA, Toes on the line, Lovieball and behind one of the most abysmal offensive lines in the game.

Take a stud LT and a starting RG and let’s see what Koetter can get out of Glennon. There will be plenty of QB’s next year as well and some could actually be better than Winston or Mariota.

I really don’t think we will have to wait up until draft day to know who the pick is going to be. Then again secretive Lovie is the HC.

I still suspect and hope we will know about 3 weeks before the draft.

Did everyone know Houston was going to take Clowney?

Ive dealt with losing season after losing season. No way I would ever let a draft pick come between me and my Bucs. Lol

I think when you become a fan of the Bucs they send you a welcome package that discusses the ins and outs of losing and how to best deal with it. Then in the back of the brochure they discuss that one magical year where we won a SB. You know, just to end it on a nice note.

I know I saw you corrected it, but I want to F with ya a little bit.

Good Good. I may be crazy for Winston but more crazy about the Bucs.

@87 Lovie holds his cards to the vest so tight I doubt we wont know until the guy is hugging the commish. And then into training camp Lovie still wont admit who is starter is until the last game of the preseason. And then he still maybe calling the rook (if we draft one) the QB of the future while starting Glennon or Mccown.

  76. 87ForJameisNoMariota Says:

Skyline…I think most people suspected they would take Clowney and that’s what I’m talking about.

As we get closer to the draft I think it will become like a groundswell which is what I thought when it came to Clowney.

For those of you that went to Pasco County schools….

    ground·swell

    noun
    1. a buildup of opinion or feeling in a large section of the population.

  77. Skyline Crew Says:

So what is this Pasco County School stuff I keep seeing? Is that a bad school district.

Real football doesn’t start until November anyways.

Skyline Crew…let’s just say when I moved to Florida (Pasco County) from Mass I was about 7 credits ahead of everyone in my Sophomore year. I was taking Junior classes and I also noticed a tremendous difference in lack of teaching from Mass to Pasco.

It’s also the general consensus from people I run into daily.

With all the off field suspensions, Bucs removed Shameis Winston and Dorial Beckham from their board. Raheem would have taken Shameis but front office has thrown out the trash!

U messed up Joe. Should be Glennon gang. And mariota mob. U got it backwards

  83. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

Lol. Joe (and many others) are still in denial about us drafting Mariota….. Joe’s QB credibility has been on steady decline since the infamous Jonny Football endorsement. In a few months, we’ll have a similar outcome with this silly Winston campaign. #winstonisabustwaitingtohappendontbestupidpeople

  84. White Tiger Says:

…never mind that Jameis Winston has displayed a troublesome character…repeatedly, even standing on a table to taunt young college women, AFTER being accused of rape (twice). Never mind that the trouble occurred more frequently AFTER Famous Jameis’ successful Heisman/National Championship season…when he knew the NFL was watching and scrutinizing, never mind that his lack of discipline was noted at Clemson and again verses Oregon at the Rose Bowl…ultimately becoming the reason his team did NOT advance…

No…bever mind his perfect Ryan Leaf imitation…the Famous Jameis crowd wants you and the Glazers to pay no attention to the man behind the curtain….

Sorry Jameis fans, in the real world, no one with this many question marks is EVER drafted with the 1st overall draft pick…well, not since Ryan Leaf went 2nd overall, Mat Leinart, Vince Young and maybe a few others…it almost NEVER happens…

I’d rather draft Marcus Mariota and bench him for a year – at least he’ll still be in the league in year 3…

Only thing I’ll add is that last year Joe was all man crush over Johnny Football. Now, the Browns are looking for another “franchise quarterback.” Enough said about Joe’s qualifications as a scout.
