Jameis Watch: “Be Happy!”

January 23rd, 2015

jameis 1215

Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, former national champion Jameis Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon and Josh McCown.

It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback to wear No. 5 ever in the state of Florida.

Former NFL linebacker Kirk Morrison played eight seasons. He knows a quarterback when he sees one. And when the Fox Sports NFL analyst looks at prospective quarterbacks, for him, there is just one.

That would be Jameis Winston.

In a recent interview with Pat Donovan and Aaron Jacobson on WDAE-AM 620, Morrison said Winston, from what he has studied, is head and shoulders above the rest of the quarterbacks in the draft.

Morrison said Tampa Bay fans should rejoice when Roger Goodell calls Winston’s name to begin the draft at the end of April.

“Buccaneers fans should be happy with Jameis Winston,” Morrison said. “He’s the guy I have seen the most from as far as making throws, going through progressions, footwork, mechanics, the fundamentals. That’s what I look at when I evaluate quarterbacks and when I look at Jameis Winston, he has only lost one football game. He has been in pressure situations and knew how to overcome that on the field. We are not going to talk about off the field.”

Morrison goes on to laud Winston. You can enjoy the entire interview by clicking the red arrow below. Audio courtesy of Joe’s friends at WDAE-AM 620.

We know all this -playing isnt a problem

  2. Mr. Patrick Says:

There are a lot of QB’s in the draft every year that can “make all the throws” that never have a successful NFL career. Most experts agree that Winston’s mechanics need work and agree that at times this year he was careless with the football leading to all of those interceptions. If any team is desparate enough to start him from day 1 he will be a turnover machine

  3. lurker Says:

then why do people want mariota…not even close skill-wise. don’t settle…we will regret it.

good guy dungy couldn’t get us a superbowl. m it took badboy gruden to do it. 😮

  4. Jonny 2.3 Says:

Its not even a discussion any more. Winston is far better than Mariota based on his on the field play as well as leadership. Were it not for the sexual assault allegation, Mariota’s name would not even be brought up as a potential #1 overall.

  5. lurker Says:

” Most experts agree that Winston’s mechanics need work and agree that at times this year he was careless with the football leading to all of those interceptions.”

    thanks for more made-up stuff.

  6. Babaloo Says:

That’s hilarious. We are not going to talk off the field. His off the field problems supersede his on the field efforts because if he doesn’t calm it down it’ll be difficult to play from a jail cell.

How long till we hear about a bar fight or strip club incident or god forbid another rape incident? Some of those things take you off the field for quite some time and I don’t think he has gotten anywheres near learning his lesson.

  7. Mr. Patrick Says:

    @ Joe
You never answered my question from the Derrick Brooks Character Developement Plan post. Too tough of a decision?

  8. 87ForJameisNoMariota Says:

“Buccaneers fans should be happy with Jameis Winston,” Morrison said. “He’s the guy I have seen the most from as far as making throws, going through progressions, footwork, mechanics, the fundamentals.”

Come on guy I know you actually played in the NFL… but if you read the comments daily on JBF. Winston possesses none of those traits all.

Don’t you know that these Buc fans know more than you?

  9. 87ForJameisNoMariota Says:

Joe which one would you prefer…Jameis or Johnny?

  10. Ellis Says:

I’m not thrilled with Winston or Mariota….. Trade down, get picks and find our “Russell Wilson” in the later rounds

  11. Robert 9 Says:

how’s he gonna do it from a jail cell?

  12. 87ForJameisNoMariota Says:

Robert9…quit whining the same words every day…

How do you know he will wind up in jail?

  13. 87ForJameisNoMariota Says:

You all are starting to sound like whiny little 2 year olds….

  14. Scott Says:

@Ellis Our Russell Wilson is Mike Glennon. Now he may end up somewhere else but that guy will flourish with a good team. He is smart and that is a lot of coaches #1 invaluable skill

  15. Robert 9 Says:

I have not whined every day.

I have applauded the hires of the OC and QB coach, Lansana etc.

but I am consistent on this because I believe the best indicator of future behavior is past behavior. Sometimes that can change if there is a life altering experience/reprecussion from actions. but in this case he has been protected from his wrong doings and don’t see them changing until something bad happens. just my .02

  16. lurker Says:

exactly…joe wants to use your crystal balls, people.

you have no idea if jameis will “end up in jail”. hell, it is far more likely one of the moronic posters here end up in jail!

  17. Barry Says:

The Glazers franchise will take a hit if they allow Winston to be drafted with their first pick. Not all want an accused rapist as our QB.

yeah because running out of bound 1/2 yard short is smart.

  20. lurker Says:

“He is smart and that is a lot of coaches #1 invaluable skill”

yes, much more valuable than acuracy and ability

  21. Tampabaybucfan Says:

It’s Friday afternoon at 2:40pm….If Winston is drafted….it will be about this time on every Friday in the off-season that I’ll start to get a bit nervous about what Winston will be doing Friday night…..

Like I said….can accept either, but will sleep easier with Mariota….

  22. lurker Says:

“He is smart and that is a lot of coaches #1 invaluable skill”

yeah, because you know a lot of coaches…smh

  23. lurker Says:

“it will be about this time on every Friday in the off-season that I’ll start to get a bit nervous about what Winston will be doing Friday night…..”

    wow…someone needs a hobby! 😉

    amiright

  24. Eric Says:

I highly doubt Lovie Smith is going to not draft a super talented QB because of a couple of college pranks.

Lovie has a son, I doubt he was perfect.

He knows the score and will make his own opinion of Jameis.

Gonna be a great day when Jameis hugs the commish and puts on that bucs jersey.

That will be the day this thing starts turning around.

  25. 87ForJameisNoMariota Says:

I’m still waiting for someone to take me up on my bet…

I say the Bucs WILL draft Winston. If I’m wrong I buy you 2 tickets to the home opener. If I’m right, you buy me 2 tickets.

That’s how confident I am that they are going to take Winston. Even though pro day, the scouting combine and the interviews have yet to take place.

    Any takers?

  26. Scott Says:

Ok … I forgot to say Wilson is a little better BUT Wilson and Glennon are 2 diff types of QB, its not fair to compare. Remember people calling Wilson a game manager. Of course he has a cannon and he is not mobile BUT hes smart and will make plays…

with all that said i dont care if we trade him. I just feel like you should in general trust Schaino picks. Esp if he benched your franchise QB for this guy

  27. 87ForJameisNoMariota Says:

Eric they’ve already seen the tape on both QB’s by now….

That’s where my confidence comes from.

  28. lurker Says:

let’s keep track of the most preposterous things people say…

    Scott Said:
    January 23rd, 2015 at 3:35 pm
“Our Russell Wilson is Mike Glennon.”

  29. Buccfan37 Says:

I’ll just wait until the selection is made. It’s too bad one of these QB’s is not head and shoulders above the other making the pick more obvious. I support whoever the choice is and better minds will make it.

  30. Scott Says:

haha lurker. Both round 3, both same school*, might as well be. Jk

I am a MUCH bigger Winston fan than both of those QBs by the way including Wilson

  31. lurker Says:

“…and better (football) minds will make it.”
    *corrected

    let us hope so

  32. Mr. Patrick Says:

I really think that Winston would only have a handfull of supporters on here if it weren’t for the FSU people who wouldn’t care if he were Charles Manson. If the Bucs make the huge mistake of drafting him, then in 3 years when the Bucs are needing a QB again they will be back on here touting the current FSU QB in the draft. Blind loyalty runs amuck

  33. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    Jaboo!!

  34. Jim Says:

Scott – are you nuts? Glennon aka ‘cement shoes’ is our Russel Wilson. Glennon is NOT mobile and can only complete dink passes. 75% of his passes over 20 yards are incomplete

  35. Scott Says:

I condense my comments to avoid writing paragraphs while I should be working. So, my stuff might sound baseless or homer but its not. No reason to write a story out to convince you guys about an opinion anyway

  37. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

87 I’ve got a different wager I’d like to put up

I’ll take the first person to accept:

Bucs draft Jameis then you buy me AND YOURSELF a Jameis jersey. The $100 variety (no need to go crazy with the authentic — replica will be good enough)

If they draft Mariota I buy us both MM jerseys. Any takers?

  38. Scott Says:

Jim not our Russell Wilson at all. Sh*t Wilson is a running QB. Im talking about a quality quarterback who will win you games. I am not comparing them in that sense

  39. OAR Says:

    My crystal ball is deflated!

  40. 87ForJameisNoMariota Says:

CreamsicleBananaHammock…yes sir. I like that wager more.

It’s going to be a long 3 months, but hopefully it will start to sink in with these fans that the pick IS going to be Winston.

All they can do on draft day is cringe…

  41. Scott Says:

ok now you guys may think I am ludicrous but, after watching the tape here is how I feel

Glennon can make Winston type throws (yes his throws are that great) just not as much and hes not as complete as Winston

  42. lurker Says:

    “My crystal ball is deflated!”

there is plenty of hot air on jbf to help you out oar.

    ps wasn’t an offer

  43. lurker Says:

most everyone says glennon will make a great backup. it is really nice if both qb’s are similar so the offense doesn’t need to change much.

  44. Bucsfan4lyf Says:

People don’t like Mariota because of the “System” he was in.

NEWS FLASH! Drew Brees was also in a spread offense, can anyone tell me how great he is now?

You don’t find players coming to the draft that are 6’4, weigh 230 lbs, run a 4.4 and play QB. And to top it off, he is a great leader, great person off the field and the type of player Tampa needs for the fan base.

I’m sorry, but Wisnton to me is another Jamarcus Russell, all the talent in the world, but stupuid decisions off the field.

    #MARIOTAORBUST

  45. Luther Says:

If the Bucs were to draft Mariota, I would have serious concerns about their ability to grade talent. I’m not a football scout and I can see that Winston is better. The problem with people saying don’t draft Winston is that Mariota is not even close. I’m going on record to say that he will be a bust. There is no comparison with Bridgewater either because Bridgewater showed on film that he could make NFL throws that Mariota has not shown.

  46. 87ForJameisNoMariota Says:

    Bucsfan4lyf …now you’ve changed my mind. I want Mariota.

    Psych!

  47. 87ForJameisNoMariota Says:

Luther …welcome to the club…I called bust 2 weeks ago.

I think I’m all alone on an island though when I say Winston will win a SB within 3 years of entering the NFL..no matter who drafts him.

That I’m going on record with too.

  48. lurker Says:

i don’t like mariota because he is inaccurate on medium and long range passes. when his system was shutdown, he couldn’t work outside of it…see ohio state and arizona this year. see stanford the previous 2 years.

he is like manziel last year. why do all the manziel haters love mariota? manziel is the better creator and passer.

mariota can’t take a hit. he is not a vocal leader…has no fire. he also take too many sacks.

  49. Arealbucsfan Says:

Dude its not jus FSU homers supporting him and if it wasnt for a rape charge(he wasnt guilty for) u would probably still hate him. Sounds like ur a GAYtors fan.

  50. Scott Says:

Lurker that would be freakin sweet if thats what we decided to do. Light is a wheel and dealer though so he could most def trade him for good value as he like to call it

  55. Pickgrin Says:

I will be glad when draft day comes and Winston is officially the Bucs new QB of the present and future. He will start from day – and while he will surely make some rookie mistakes – the talent he will show in his 1st year playing in the NFL will be undeniable. 2-3 years down the road – Winston will be a top 10 NFL QB. I’m not thrilled with Winston or Mariota….. Trade down, get picks and find our “Russell Wilson” in the later rounds

    ————–

How many Russell Wilsons have there been in the past 10 years? Brady (6th rounder) and Romo (undrafted) were over 10 years ago… try ONE… if there were sooooo many Russell Wilsons out there, don’t you think you’d be seeing one every year? Russell Wilson is a once every decade or so type story. you can’t count on landing a Russell Wilson in round 3 or a Tom Brady in round 6 because those prospects, and those chances, are few and far between.

Most of the elite QBs in the NFL, have been selected in the draft’s top 50 picks…. plain and simple.

  68. tiny tim Says:

@ cant’t fix it and Mr. Patrick,

Obviously you guys know nothing about modern day nfl football. I see why you continuously make the comments you do. First of all drafting a qb that turns out to be a bust will not set a franchise back 10 years. Minnesota just drafted Bridgewater after drafting Ponder 3 years ago. Bortles was drafted 3 years after gabbert. Tennesse drafted Locker three years ago, then drafted Zack Mettenberger last year and are still in position this year to draft Winston or Mariotta. Drafting a qb that is a bust is not the death sentence it was just 5 yrs ago due to the new salary scale. See this is what I am talking about when I say posters on here make stuff up just to validate a weak an uneducated point. Good try though.

  69. Cascade Says:

Joe’s opinion on QBs is not to be trusted…

  70. rayjay1122 Says:

If we take Winston, I will definitely support him and hope he succeeds. I want the Bucs to be relevant again and win championships. I honestly don’t care about his past as long as he is who the Bucs want. I personally am not blown away by his on the field skills though. I see him as being another Trent Dilfer type QB as far as his play goes. If we take him, I hope he makes me eat crow by becoming the 1st true great QB we have had. If Mariota is the guy, I have the same sentiments except for the Dilfer comparison. I think Mariota will be more tough to gaugue ahead of time due to the lack of experience under center and passing in the pocket. Both of these guys have big time bust potential but we have to take a chance. It is the only way to get a great QB. Either way, we will have to be patient longer. I don’t want another Steve Young situation.

  71. Bucsfan4lyf Says:

“In Winston’s Heisman winning 2013 frame, 40 TDs vs only 10 picks provided sufficient eye candy. But his numbers were just pedestrian in 2014: 25 TD vs 18 INT. His passer rating ranked 27th in the nation, sandwiched between Taylor Kelly and Gary Nova. Mariota OTOH was #1 nationally in both TDs and passer rating. Next look at character. Winston has been involved in several instances of questionable behavior. Now take that same guy, and add $22 million dollars. Maybe I’m not seeing the light, but I’d veer toward Mariota”

    #MariotaorBust

  72. Mr. Patrick Says:

The 2 teams in the Superbowl next Sunday will be starting 2 QB’s that are a 3rd round pick and a 6th round pick. And when our Buccaneers won their 1 and only Championship it was with a QB that was a veteren signed as a free agent. There are QB’s drafted in the 1st round every year that can “make all the throws” that turn out to be busts.
So why in the world would a franchise that is 2-14 and in need of talent all through the roster gamble or risk the #1 pick in the draft on a QB that is a major dice roll? That kind of thinking will keep you continually around 2-14

  81. lurker Says:

    hell, why keep the pick?

as i said last year, let’s just trade back in the first and get more picks. then keep trading back. hell, with the #1 overall we could probably get most of the picks in the 6th and 7th round if we keep trading back.

oh yeah…the higher the pick, the better the prospect, and more likely the person will succeed.

  82. pick6 Says:

for those trying to compare winston and mariotta, here’s a quote from the ESPN article that also reports the “100% joke” comment about manziel:
“The biggest on-field concern with Manziel as he moved into the NFL was whether he could master the nuances of a pro system. At Texas A&M, the emphasis was on tempo, calling plays in a hurry and getting to the line to run plays quickly. In the NFL, pre-snap reads, protections and coverages matter more than tempo.

At A&M, the center made protection calls and Manziel’s job was, in part, to find mismatches, often throwing to dominant 6-foot-5 receiver Mike Evans or scrambling when plays broke down.”

manziel off the field is a headache many orders of magnitude greater than JW (i am basing this statement on the fact that i refuse to find jameis guilty of sexual assualt, since, y’know, i am not a court of law), and there was constant evidence that he did not care enough about putting in the work a pro athlete needed.

manziel on the field, however, is a pretty good parallel for marcus mariotta and the struggles you can expect.

  88. tiny tim Says:

    @ mr Patrick,

Obviously you don’t know football to agree with someone who says picking the wrong qb will set your franchise back 10 years. Your knowledge is shot brotha!!

  89. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

In this day and age picking the wrong QB only sets you back a few years. Now if you continually pick the wrong QB then yes it could set you back 10 years, but one QB won’t do that.

  90. tiny tim Says:

    @ Robert 9

How can you be so sure he is a rapist? I guess it takes a rapist to know a rapist. Tell me, with your experience as being a rapist obviously what made it so clear that Winston is also rapist such as yourself?

  91. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

Anyone want to help pick Robert’s new team?

Do you want to stay regional? Fins or Jags?

  92. tiny tim Says:

  93. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

If we do take Winston, I will support him 100% bcuz I want the Bucs to be successful more than anything. But, I think there’s probably a 1% chance that Lovie, Licht, & Glazers draft him. After Mariota’s workout and interviews, I believe he will be too strong of a prospect to pass up. How do u passon a guy who has impeccable character and all of the physical and mental attributes necessary to be successful?!? #notgonnahappen

  94. lurker Says:

    lol…that article is old mr.patrick.

jan 15 mel kiper mock 1.0 has jameis winston going #1 to the bucs.

    http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=12170956

“I said back in August he should be #1. I said last year he would go ahead of clowney if he were draft eligible. The off-the-field issue moved him down the board. I said for every month he didn’t have an issue he would move up 2,3,4 spots. He hasn’t had any more issues. No issues between now and late April…Jameis Winston NFL ready, Tampa Bay in a division with a lot of quality quarterbacks, I think Tampa Bay would take Jameis Winston #1 overall.”

  95. Mr. Patrick Says:

    @ Mr Tiny
I actually said that drafting the wrong QB in 1st round out of desparation sets a franchise back 5 years. The teams that were mentioned drafted another QB after 3 years, but they all had losing records this year and probably will next year also. I think that adds up to at least 5

  96. LargoBuc Says:

Look Winston is young and he is no choir boy but he has a swagger about him and a fire to win and be competetive. Lets just hope when times get rough as it will at times changing our losing culture, that the kid holds his head high and uses his superior skill set to lead our offense. The Glazers and Licht have to know that Winston gives us a better chance than Glennon does in the long run and dont get me started on Mccown. And who knows maybe AJ man, Lael Collins or Cedric Ogboueghi will be around at the top of the second.

  97. Mr. Patrick Says:

    @ Lurker
It was only last month. Winston has only played 1 game since then and he lost. It shows these guys change their minds like the wind or Kiper thinks the Bucs will overdraft him out of desparation even though he doesn’t think he’s a franchise QB

  98. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

I’ll bet anyone anything u can come up with that we don’t draft Winston…. Good Christian Lovie and the ultra conservative Glazer sons are going to draft the guy with impeccable character and also an elite skillset. That guy is Mariota, friends.

  99. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Tiny

See this is what I am talking about when I say posters on here make stuff up just to validate a weak an uneducated point. Good try though.

Without taking sides in your debate with Mr. Patrick, that at least is the way to post. I knew you had it in you. No ad hom and name calling and aside from Mr Patrick’s contention that he said 5 not 10 years at least you had a well thought out point.

Most of you are all too young to remember the great sendup on the first years of Sat Night Live where Akroyd and Curtain played two cable news hosts debating. Akroyd would usually start his response with…”Jane you ignorant slut”.

Good Christians practice forgiveness and support 2nd chances but that aspect doesn’t fit your agenda does it.

It’s a totally different issue. 2nd chances are fine. The only relevant question is whether or not you feel confident that the guy you pick with the #1 pick is reliable. If you have severe doubts, you don’t draft him as the first overall pick. You don’t spend the first overall pick on 2nd chances. You MUST get that pick right.

  104. 87ForJameisNoMariota Says:

“After Mariota’s workout and interviews, I believe he will be too strong of a prospect to pass up. How do u passon a guy who has impeccable character and all of the physical and mental attributes necessary to be successful?!?”

How can you pass on him? Very simple you look at the game tape, the combine, and interviews.

Actually all you need to do is look at the game tape…then it’s game set match.

Jameis Winston is coming to Tampa.

  105. Mr. Patrick Says:

    @ Lurker
Dude, pull your head out of the sand and read what everybody says, not just what you want to be true. You can’t make an intellegent decision on something until you hear facts and evidence from both sides. Stop calling BS on well thought out posts from people on hear just because it goes against your agenda. I’ve seen people on here call you out for being a Racist and an Idiot (which I have never done by the way) because of some of your comments that go against actual facts. I know you can do better or soon the people that post on here intellegently will just start to ignore you all together

  106. Luther Says:

I’m headed to Publix on draft day to get crab legs so I can celebrate drafting Winston.

  107. tmaxcon Says:

Here is another fact the anti Winston crowd will not want to read… Remember Lovie brought Brandon Marshal to the bears. Let me remind you folks that Marshals domestic violence history and mental health issues are very well documented and far more serious than anything Winston is guilty of. I am very happy for Marshall that he got his life together. No Marshall is not the face of the franchise like a QB but he is a very high profile player none the less. So for all you folks that “Guarantee” and are “Convinced” Lovie would never have a guy like Winston on his team please review history a bit. He also traded for Cutler who is a well documented head case and was run out of Denver.

  108. 87ForJameisNoMariota Says:

tmaxcon …you don’t need to convince anyone. Let them all be shocked on draft day.

  109. lurker Says:

and there you go making stuff up…when was i called a racist?

i was called an idiot for pointing out a posters inherent racism. that poster never responded, but the good ole white boys club did.

what facts have people posted? you posted an article from one month ago. i posted a more recent video, and dictated it for you, and that wasn’t good enough.

then i use your words of “changes his mind like the wind” and how that is a weak support of your argument.

then you always get flustered and cry foul.

ps you say you never called me an idiot but then post how another, in support of a racist comment, did…but you are not alluding are you?

pps i least i don’t have to worry about you ignoring my comments then

  110. tmaxcon Says:

You can’t convince folks that rather push agendas than deal with facts and reality.

  111. Luther Says:

What I don’t understand is why people would want Mariota when people are thinking that he will probably fall after his workouts. If Tenn will pass him(they need a QB too), then why would we take him at number 1? This kind of logic fails me.

  112. Luther Says:

Also, I want to know why Mariota passed on the Senior Bowl. Carr and Garoppolo tore it up last year and I thought they would be the best QBs in last year’s draft. I still rate them higher than Bridgewater. Another spread favorite, Bryce Petty has looked terrible this week. Just say no to spread guys, especially guys that don’t have enough confidence to show his wares on such a large platform like the Senor Bowl.

  113. 87ForJameisNoMariota Says:

    Here’s a few other facts:
    1) Lovie didn’t have to spend the first overall pick to get Marshall.
    2) Marshall had mental health issues that were addressed.
    3) Marshall isn’t a QB, and the standard is different for QBs.

I’m not even saying not to draft Jameis. I’m just saying that the character concerns need to be fully investigated and they have to feel very confident they aren’t drafting a guy who is going to implode. I don’t think any fans are in a position to make that call. Personally, he scares me, and if I were a GM, I’d be losing sleep at the idea of drafting him.

  116. passthebuc Says:

A team without discipline and intent to draft James. This has disaster written all over it.

  117. White Tiger Says:

huh, reading some of these posts, it would seem folks didn’t see these two QB’s in head to head competition? Not sure if you guys noticed…Jameis Winston’s turnovers and lack of leadership, led to his teams EPIC collapse.

This just in: Despite FSU pulling to within a point at the half – Mariota SMOKED the ‘nole defense, and the defense smothered, harassed, and frustrated the guy SOME think did the better job.

The winning QB of that game (Marcus Mariota) was the REASON Oregon put the historic BEATDOWN on the Jameis Winston led Seminoles…

Jameis Winston finally faced a REAL defense, and he was confused, irrational, and had to be threatened with benching in order to comply with HIS coach’s wishes…can you imagine what he will do once he faces a defense that is better than Oregon…EVERY Sunday?

Lets not dismiss the facts…they’re pretty stubborn things.

  118. passthebuc Says:

there is only one way to rate Winston. you compare him to all the top QB’s over the last 10 years

  119. SuperSam Says:

The pick is gonna be Mariota. Sorry Winston lovers, but sounds like me there developing a playbook for Mariota.

Provide evidence to support your position!

  124. cmurda Says:

    @White Mariota,

Winston finally faced a real defense? Are you serious? Gators defense was legit twice and I’m not even going to look through the schedule to find other good defenses.

  125. Rex Says:

To Robert 9 and all of the people who continuously pick on Jameis for something that hasn’t even been proven ( rape allegations ), you all should know that he isn’t the only one that has had off field issues coming out of college. Dan Marino, Dez bryant, tyrann Mathieu, aqib talib. From what I’ve seen, they have been pretty successful and have outgrown their off field issues and immaturity. Once Jameis is surrounded by veterans and mature players. He will get the positive vibe and be on his best behavior if negative people would just give him a chance. You guys act as if he is the only one who has ever had this problem! And no matter who we get, you should just support your team no matter what! That’s what being a TRUE fan is! I don’t necesarilly want Mariota, but if we get him, I will support it all the way through! I go to every game, I’ve watched this 2-14 season and the 4-12 one the year before! Hell, I’ve even stuck with josh freeman for 5 years! You just have to learn to support it! I’m pretty sure that the GM and Lovie know a bit more than we do about this. It’s great to give your opinion but quit knocking the idea before you see It through! Just please quit bashing on what could be a franchise player. Unless you are psychic, you don’t know how he will turn out and you just have to witness for your selves and support your teams decision. I might sound biased because I am an FSU fan but I actually think Jameis is one of the best QB talents to come into the draft in the last 10 years. Mariota is great too but I just don’t see him working in our system unless he sits a year. And God knows you guys don’t have the patience for that. So side with the guy that can start day 1.

How long till we hear about a bar fight or strip club incident or god forbid another rape incident? Some of those things take you off the field for quite some time and I don’t think he has gotten anywheres near learning his lesson.

If the Bucs make the huge mistake of drafting him, then in 3 years when the Bucs are needing a QB again they will be back on here touting the current FSU QB in the draft. Blind loyalty runs amuck

    Your statement is lacking substance.

  130. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

You want to know why so many teams do not strike gold at QB with the first pick? Because the popular choice is usually the wrong choice.

Winston is the wrong choice, and if the Bucs draft him, I will hope for the best, hope that I am wrong. But I know I’m not and when he proves me right, I will remind everyone of you of how wrong you have been…constantly. And enjoy doing it.

Mariota is the better of the two. Period. Neither of them is and Andrew Luck, but of the two, Mariota is better. Winston’s mechanics are a myth.

The greatest myth is that he can throw into tight windows. If that’s the case, why the picks? Why are the windows tight? None of you wish to address those questions.

And, the answer to why Mariotahas wide recievers open? BECAUSE HE THROWS TEM OPEN, unlike Winston. That was once considered a better thing, but ignorance rules these days.

And, I’m sorry, but I really don’t care what this linebacker says. I bet I have watched more games of both quarterbacks than he has. Heck, I’m now watching previous season games of them just to do my research, and Winston is not as impressive as you think. He has extremely bad habits that remind me of failed quarterbacks or career backups.

He’s not the leader people claim. And his “come frome behind victories” were because he caused the team to fall behind. It will not be so easy in the NFL.

Most of all, he gets very rattled when in adversity. NFL defenses will have qa field day with his wind up and holding onto the ball too long.

But hey, you people, who have watched eith no games, only a couple games, or watched only on of them for an extended number of games, think you know all. For god’s sake…watch the signs!

  131. ChrisBuc23 Says:

Get over that off the field crap man no one is perfect. 133. JFat Says:

I think the gap in talent between Mariota and Winston is a bit overblown, they’re just different styles of QB, both can work in today’s NFL. Both are smart, one has a stronger arm, the other has a quicker release, one has experience in a more traditional offense, the other can use his legs as a weapon, one leads. They just need to get them both on the whiteboard and see who is the most impressive upstairs.

I think an imaginative offensive mind should be able to work with both of these guys and play to their strengths. Koetter will make/break this pick, if he is adaptable with his offense like he says he is, we’ll be in good shape either way.

  140. 87ForJameisNoMariota Says:

    mikeh…a wager has been placed.

  141. LargoBuc Says:

I truly beleive that neither Winston or Mariota are worthy of the first pick. Leonard Williams, Randy Gregory or Brandon Scherif are probably better than either qb. However for the sake of debate were assuming the Bucs are going to reach for a qb, which they probably will, and out of the two Winston will probably be their choice. I say that not based on any inside knowledge I have its just that of the two available Winston appears to be more pro ready than Mariota. Because of that Winston presumably will win more games this year for us than Mariota or whatever bridge gap qb they find. And those “more wins” is what Lovie NEEDS in 2015 otherwise he’s gone. Now the assumption that Winston will win more games than Mariota, Glennon or whomever veteran they could sign is huge! Lovie’s job basically depends on the production of some young qb. And that’s just assuming the defense continues to get better too. Yeah there is alot riding on this decision.

  142. cmurda Says:

  152. Mr. Patrick Says:

    @ LargoBuc
I agree that after spending millions in free agency on misses, going 2-14, going winless at home, going winless in the NFL’s worst division, and “earning” the #1 draft pick Lovie knows he has to win big now. That’s why I think he may pass on a rookie QB and draft somebody like Leonard Williams who can help them win now. Lovie doesn’t have time for a rookie QB to develope and anybody that thinks Winston or Mariota can help them win now is fooling themselves.

  171. Luther Says:

By the way…J.J. Watt is at home eating popcorn and watching the playoffs like us.

  172. Rex Says:

Mr. Patrick, I understand and respect your opinion why we should get Williams. I would love to get a guy of that caliber, but our offense is the primary need right now unless we go big with Oline in FA. But if we don’t get at least 2 Olinemen in FA then our primary need is either a QB or a top notch Olineman. Yes our defense would be great but our defense wasn’t the reason we went 2-14 in the first place this season. But I would love the duo of Williams/GMC otherwise.

Never drafted a QB in the 1st round! Yet won a Super Bowl with 3 different QB’s. Damn those hogs..lol

  175. lurker Says:

also, qb is harder to find than d-line. you can get good d-line in free agency, not so qb. also, we have spent high draft picks and money on our lines, not so on qb.

also, you said williams is the next jjwatt and COULD have the same impact…
    that is a risk.

it is a wayyyy different league than 44 years ago. rule changes on the field, draft, cap, and personnel.

    but, history, ummm yeah.

  181. Greg Says:

We had a thousand yard rusher we cut because he was an ahole. A thousand yard receiver we cut because he was an a-hole. why would the glaziers allow this? They wont. The guy is a scumbag. He gang raped a girl and video taped it. Only Florida state fans believe his crap. He has a pattern of this and has always gotten away with it so why would he change? I have been a Bucs fan for many years. I can handle being patient while we groom a qb but the next victim is on the Glaziers hands.

  182. LUVMYBUCS Says:

When you consider the insane roster, the Rams have built by trading away picks. The ONLY thing their missing is a Healthy QB.

  183. lurker Says:

and the rams have been to the playoffs? last appearance 2004.

  184. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Smh-Those picks would later become-Greg Robinson, Janoris Jenkins, Michael Brockers, Alec Ogletree, Zac Stacy and Stedman Bailey.

  185. lurker Says:

again…they haven’t been to the playoffs since 2004.

and they still need a qb!

  186. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Lol, again that’s all they need.

  187. Mr. Patrick Says:

    @ Rex
Yes and no. The defense got blown out 3 times and gave up some 4th quarter leads. But when you are 2-14, everybody is sucking
Also, remember when Lovie said that you win 8 games with defense and a couple more with offense and special teams. You know Lovie would love to see Williams next to GMC. Also, how many QB’s has Lovie ever drafted and how many rookie QB’s has Lovie ever played? He said he doesn’t have faith in or trust young QB’s

  188. Mr. Patrick Says:

    @ LUVMYBUCS
Maybe Rams will trade up to #1 and take Winston

  189. LargoBuc Says:

If you do take Williams at no.1 then who do we start at qb? Glennon? Will Lovie put his career on Glennons shoulders? I dont know but the fact that Lovie re-inserted Mccown into the lineup mid season suggests no he wont put all of his stock in Glennon despite him saying Glennon was the “qb of the future” which is a vague statement. I really wouldn’t be opposed to seeing what Glennon could do with a whole offseason going “all in”. The Pittsburgh game was as gutsy a performance i’ve seen from any Bucs qb ever. I just dont think the Bucs will go that route.

  190. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Besides becoming the 1st team in NFL history to record back 2 back blowout

    Vs
    Oakland W 52-0
    Washington W 24-0

They recorded 3 signature wins this year. All while starting a 3rd string QB

    Vs
    Seattle W 28-26
    San Francisco W 13-10
    Denver W 22-7

All they need is a Healthy QB

  191. Joe Says:

Maybe Rams will trade up to #1 and take Winston

They are talking about keeping Bradford, but hard to believe with that salary.

  192. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Mr. Patrick

    Lol, Maybe

  193. Skyline Crew Says:

I prefer Mariota because of his skill set. I just like it better than Winston’s. Also Mariota doesn’t have as many mechanical flaws. Easily fixable though for Winston. Both QBs have trouble with underneath coverage. Winston gets a little happy feet and raddled when he gets pressure up the middle. Mariota is able to extend plays. Both QBs can improvise. Like I said I just like Mariota’s skill set better. Won’t complain if we take Winston. I just want a QB who will come in and work. Both can start in their rookie year as we don’t have the luxury of sitting a rookie unless they want Glennon at the helm for another year. No more McCown!

  194. lurker Says:

also, it takes 2 to tango. the bucs might be stuck with #1.

so again…the rams are home watching the playoff just like us.

and yet we can draft our franchise qb and they

  195. lurker Says:

    can’t

  196. Skyline Crew Says:

Teams that could trade up are Browns or Jets. We could do a three way with one of them and Titans.

  197. lurker Says:

and u r here with us during draft prep time.

  198. Mr. Patrick Says:

One thing I’ve learned from watching many, many drafts is that you can always expect the unexpected

  199. lurker Says:

also…we have the #1 pick, not the #2.

  200. lurker Says:

but, if you want to read on #1 picks traded down…

    1/15/15
    http://www.buccaneers.com/news/article-smith/Four-Times-the-1-Pick-Was-Traded/1c49d13-982c-4b1c-a5fe-1057a5393a50

    1990, 1995, 1997, 2001. 2 for and 2 against? crapshoot either way.
and pick valuations are judged differently now.

  201. lurker Says:

but…you grab the qb since there is only 1, maybe 2 before a stout dropoff…at this point in the evaluations, anyways.

  202. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Remember Chargers trade away their #1 pick to Atlanta

Those picks would help them draft

TCU running back LaDainian Tomlinson at #5
    Purdue Quarterback Drew Brees #33

Two 1st ballet Hall of Famers.

All depends on what you do with the picks.

  203. lurker Says:

also, you have to trust the front office with the extra picks.

and you keep a first round pick because of the rule changes from 24-44 years ago, that you like to bring up. the rookie wage scale and extra year help offset risk and reward good picking.

  204. lurker Says:

the article states that the brees pick was their own, not the trade. and brees became hall of fame material when he went to the saints.

  205. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    All I’m saying is-

History has proven that you can leverage your high draft picks. To gain MORE premium draft picks-And those picks, can be used to help build a championship caliber TEAM.

  206. lurker Says:

no-one will trade up for a runningback! and this was 14 or more years ago. but maybe someone will get crafty.

  207. lurker Says:

and history has proven that you can keep the #1 pick and it can be used to help build a championship caliber TEAM.

  208. lurker Says:

again, why not keep trading down for more value picks and get tons of 5th, 6th, and 7th rounders? same principle applies. because percentages of the better talent is at the top of the draft!

  209. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Like I stated the other day- ONE MANs trash is another mans TREASURE

Drew Brees was a PRO BOWLER in 2004-

Offensive Coordinator Cam Cameron didn’t feel that Drew was a good fit for his version of the Air Coryell offense. So the Chargers drafted Rivers.

No biggie-Payton thought Brees was a great fit for his version of the West Coast Offense. After Drew Brees became the Super Bowl MVP (XLIV); I would say he was right.

  210. Mr. Patrick Says:

The difference between the Bucs and the Rams is the Rams have built a solid roster by ammasing all of those extra picks and need a new QB or a healthy Bradford. The Bucs not only need a QB but have needs all over the field plus quality depth.

  211. Joe Says:

History has proven that you can leverage your high draft picks. To gain MORE premium draft picks-And those picks, can be used to help build a championship caliber TEAM.

You can do that next year too and still get your quarterback this year (Jameis).

Don’t see any quarterback (pro style) worth a s(p)it coming out next year.

If you are scared to draft, go full blown Ditka and George Allen and trade all the picks for players.

Until the Bucs get a decent quarterback — and teams are not trading/releasing good quarterbacks — this team isn’t going anywhere.

  212. Joe Says:

No biggie-Payton thought Brees was a great fit for his version of the West Coast Offense. After Drew Brees became the Super Bowl MVP (XLIV); I would say he was right.

Please remember Brees was damaged goods when the Chargers parted ways with him. He blew out his shoulder in the last game of the season. That’s why Saban passed on him. Dolphins doctors told him it was a bad gamble.

  213. LUVMYBUCS Says:

All I’m saying is that we’re not ONE PLAYER away.

Trade down, grab more premium picks-

So that we can supplement a lot of the holes on the roster -with young cap friendly, premium prospects.

    Lets GO!!!

  214. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Joe

-Drew Brees Made the Pro Bowl 2004
-Cam Cameron Reportedly didn’t feel Brees was a good fit (2004)
-Chargers Drafted Phillip Rivers in 2004 (Round: 1 / Pick: 4)

-Drew Brees had surgery-AFTER injuring his shoulder at the end of the 2005 season

  215. lion Says:

To the fans that are comparing Winston to Freeman: That is the most ridiculous, idiotic, and ignorant thing that I have ever heard. Clearly you must know absolutely nothing about football to make a statement like that, and I have heard it from multiple people on JBF. Winston is far, far, far ahead better prospect coming out of college than Freeman was, I mean a lightyears of a difference and it’s not even close. The only thing that Freeman has with Winston is that they both wear the number 5 and that is most likely the reason fans try to compare the two which is also insane.

  216. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @joe

Remember, this was the big reason the war started between A.J. Smith and Marty Schottenheimer

  217. SuperSam Says:

Great video on fox sports!! Mariota is coming to Tampa!!! Whoot! Whoot!! http://www.foxsports.com/florida/video?vid=388542019628

  218. lurker Says:

we are more than a handful of picks away too!

you take the qb this year and he takes his lumps. then as joe said, you can trade down next year to fill out your roster. qb is a need! the rams didn’t need a qb, they had bradford. now, the rams are rethinking bradford and they cannot get a qb. when they do get their qb it will take time to gel/learn the offense and the rest of the team will be older or hitting freeagency.

  219. lurker Says:

so what good is the team without a qb? as you said, that is all the rams need, but they can’t get to the playoffs without one.

  220. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Nite brothas, appreciate the good convo.

  221. lurker Says:

hello…and what offense did koetter run in the nfl? could be because that college spread didn’t work there.

  222. lurker Says:

why look to koetter’s college days when he most recently has been in the nfl?
    smh

  223. Mr. Patrick Says:

    @ Sam
That video is very interesting. People always like to work with people they already know

  224. lurker Says:

    bye luvmybucs

  225. lurker Says:

lol…u guys just stretch things to fit your poor view.

  226. Joe Says:

Remember, this was the big reason the war started between A.J. Smith and Marty Schottenheimer

Fired Marty after a 15-win season, right?

  227. Mr. Patrick Says:

Good Night fellow Bucs fans. Enjoyed the good debate

  228. lurker Says:

    veni, vidi, vici

  229. Rex Says:

    @mr. Patrick
I agree that the defense wasn’t that good this year but after and during the Redskins game, the showed a lot of potential. And I can live with that for now. But our first priority is in the trenches of the offense. If you remember the packers game, our defense actually held them until the 4th quarter. But our offense couldn’t get past our own 40 yd line. But I also see where you would want a stud like Williams because he is raw talent that you don’t see every year and would be a great addition to what could be the best Dline group with him in the mix. But who we draft on offense is not up to lovie. He has no say in who to draft on offense. Our OC with take care of that. But it is up to lovie whether we pick offense or defense. Honestly, either Winston or Williams would help our team by a lot. But we need to address the elephant in the room ( Oline problems ). But I respect your point and somewhat agree with it

  230. IStillbleedOrange Says:

Just a passing thought to our staunch defenders of Winston/Mariota…let’s say the Bucs get their act together and put together a somewhat decent O-Line. Let’s also say the our new OC puts in a somewhat decent offense, balanced and innovative. Let’s add that our defense is shored up and is capable of being what we expect of them. Then we draft (Insert QB here) with our 1st round draft pick.

Now, toss in Josh McCown (for spits and giggles) as our bridge QB till (Insert Rookie QB) is ready to take over. With all the improvements to the offense, by chance Josh McCown leads us to a 5-2 start.

Who amongst you will be calling for (Insert Rookie QB here) to start if Josh McCown has us at 5-2 and competing for the NFC South? Or let’s say he has us at 6-2 at the halfway point of the season? Will you be calling for him to step aside? I’m merely curious, that’s all.

  231. lurker Says:

whelp…since most people say more time in the wings would benefit either rookie qb, then no-one would be chanting for mccown to step aside. it is just that winston is ready to run from the start, if needed.

    @istillbleedorange
if winston or mariotta is drafted and outperforms mccown and/or glennon in training camp and preseason, will you be calling for the vet to start?

  232. Meat Says:

Let be honest- if you got into both UF and FSU you got to UF 100% of the time. fSU was a nice safety school lol. freeshoes u!!!! Blindly supporting this geno smith 2.0.

  233. IStillbleedOrange Says:

In my years of watching this great game of football, it has been my experience that only once in a generation does a quarterback emerge from college really ready to have success as a rookie. Yes there have been outstanding QBs that had Hall of Fame careers, but very few were successful as rookies. Even the great Dan Marino had to wait until the 6th game of the season to start.

We’ve seen QB’s drafted in the 1st round before here in Tampa, and we’ve seen them thrown in way before they were ready. And we have seen what a shoddy O-Line does to inexperienced QBs. I believe, that unless Winston/Mariota shows himself to be the second coming of Dan Marino, he’ll be holding the clipboard for at least 4 games, more if McCown wins.

  234. bucrightoff Says:

If you’re wondering why the Jameis watch won’t be stopping (and will likely ramp up in the months to come), this article that says literally nothing has 240 comments. So yeah, don’t ever wonder why it keeps coming up. Part of me thinks Joe secretly wants them to pass on Jameis so he can do the Hackenberg/Cardale watch next year.

  236. sam gibbins Says:

google “The Hunting Ground” to get a good look at the guy you want the Bucs to draft.

  237. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

87Forjamiesnomariota you can almost bank on that 3 year superbowl win prediction for Winston. Kid about to be the equivalent to the nba’s Lebron James.
