Jameis Watch: Clutch Karma

January 14th, 2015

jameis 1211Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, former national champion Jameis Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon and Josh McCown.

It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback to wear No. 5 ever in the state of Florida.

One thing Joe really, really likes about Winston is the dude is just clutch. How many times did he damned near play perfect ball in the second half of games, rescuing Florida State’s hindquarters to pull out thrilling wins week after week? Nothing seemed to rattle the guy.

Then, on Monday, when Joe was watching the Ohio State trample Oregon, there was a graphic displayed showing in all BCS championship games, the team that led at halftime won. Well, all but one.

What team was that? Winston-led Florida State last year, highlighted by a last-minute championship-winning drive engineered by, you guessed it, Winston.

Why would that be such a heinous thing for the Bucs to have, a guy who rises to the occasion and doesn’t wilt under the pressure? Outside of rising out of his bed to start the day, Joe isn’t sure what turnover-prone Josh McCown does that is clutch.

Remember: the lone come-from-behind win this season came not from the hands of McCown, but from Mike Glennon, who rallied the Bucs in the final seconds on the road to beat the playoff-bound Steelers. McCown’s only win came against the sorry Redskins.

How great would it be for the Bucs to finally have a quarterback with winning karma and no tail between his legs in the final minutes?

    I have never argued about Winston’s talent level, what I have always argued was his basic immaturity and his inability to make mature life decisions. I don’t want to be the team that drafts him only to find out that what has been reported about his exploits was only the tip of the proverbial iceberg and we wind up with a cross between Dexter Manly and JaMarcus Russell who busts out before his first contract expires.

  2. Tom Edrington Says:

    @flmike:

    You have echoed the thoughts of a LOT of people….

    Last weekend I ran into a fellow with a direct connection to famous Jameis and my main inquiry was:

    “How do you think he’ll come across when NFL GMs interview him face-to-face, one-on-one?”

    Got a kick out of his quick answer:

    “He won’t impress them with his vocabulary.”

    So in Winston’s case, thank goodness for game film.

  3. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

    Trade down twice in the 1st round….and fill in the holes

  4. Wombat Says:

    The Bucs will pick the best player on the board…. USC’s Leonard Williams at #1

  5. DEEnice07 Says:

    Why does the majority of this town want to bash a young man who hasn’t done anything most of you reading this haven’t done yourselves as a young adult. The dude is a winner & all you guys want to find is the negatives in the best QB prospect we have the chance to draft in forever. Ultimately it will be the Glazers making the pick, not the majority of you Winston haters or Lovie & the crew. I believe they have no choice but to draft #5 knowing that it will instantly make many like myselves who were season pass holders get back on board because of the excitement alone that he’ll bring! & you same haters will be buying his jersey & cheering him on at the newly named Raymond JAMEIS Stadium..once the kid does what he only knows how to do, & that’s WIN BABY!

  6. Joehelldeloxley Says:

    the 1st draft pick is something good, reaq really good BUT you must know how to use it.

    We surely need some improvment at the QB position but without a real good offensive line what will this guy do during the games ?

    I don’t know what to do with this pick; exchange it, pick up for the futur, I don’t know.

    I just hope the staff and the GM know.

    About this kid, there is one thing I know and that is true in every sport in the world: guys unable to make real life decision don’t last.

  7. Barry Says:

    I thought the whole point of getting a franchise QB is to get a franchise QB, correct? Winston’s just isn’t a franchise QB. #RedFlagJameis

  8. Matt Says:

    And unlike 2014, Jameis wasn’t part of the reason the team was down at the half. He was nearly perfection in 2013. Let’s not forget his 2013 stats, before the smear campaign and with talented Jr. / sr. Level receivers.

  9. Jerseybucsfan Says:

    This is the guy we need to take. If there were no off field problem wouldn’t he be the best pick so since you have to hope for any other player not to bust out what’s the difference with winton

  10. Matt Says:

    @joehell,
    You could easily argue Winston learned how to make real life decisions over the past year, whether he wanted to or not. And I just don’t see a way bucs trade out of first pick with all the needs they have.

  11. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

    Jameis on field decisions are as bad as his off field….

  12. Tom Edrington Says:

    @DEENice07:

    WHAT? You think most of the readers may have done stuff like Jameis?

    Preposterous supposition!

    One of my lacrosse teammates swiped a steak from a Greenville grocery store and he ended up on probation….we elected him one of our captains (great attack player with incredible stick)….he was very, very grateful saying: “thanks guys, this will look good on my probation record..”

    Winston swiped crab legs and it was simply a laughing matter….

    get real DEENice

  13. flmike Says:

    @Tom Edrington

    Which makes me worry, because what that shows me and every other educated person out there is he probably doesn’t read (I didn’t say can’t, I said doesn’t), just reading the news on a daily basis improves your vocabulary, he probably doesn’t communicate well with people who are older or in authority, which again is due to his lack of a vast or even adult lexicon, which leads right back to my major issue with him which is his maturity issues….

  14. flmike Says:

    @Jerseybucsfan

  17. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

    I am very curious to see what happens to this board if MM decides to stay in school for another year. Then what do the Bucs do? If they trade down, they better get a whole lot of draft picks….something of the Dallass Cowgirls (Hershel Walker)/Minnesota Vikings variety.

    I am all in on the Jameis bandwagon. Let’s go for it.

  18. David Says:

    Flmike…are u serious? Brett Favre, and Peyton Manning had similar drawls as Jameis Winston. Just because a person tlks slang or country doesnt mran their not intelligent. Stop judging people. Im sure u could’ve had a microscope on u buddy. And @ Tom E. Laughing matter? He had community service which he completed! Wat else do u want from the guy? He went to court explained his side and was punished. Get off ur high horse. I’m not really defending Winston here as much as I’m apalled soo many of us Bucs fan are self righteous perfect human beings! No wonder our team is cursed!

  19. Waterboy Says:

    @Tom Edrington
    Google “Winston Elite 11” and look at that video. He admits on there he’s a country boy so maybe not the best vocabulary but a very smart guy that’s used to being in high pressure situations.

  20. OB Says:

    If we do draft Winston, I am sure he will have a support base to keep him out of trouble and his contract will have penalties in it also.

    I spent a lot of years in the military and saw young troops like Winston blossom with the right leadership, I believe he will get it here if he is the chosen one, but whoever we choose, they will have the leadership necessary to win and sit on the bench for a while watching Glennon play for seasoning.

    Question Joe, can a QB on the sidelines listen in on the instructions given the on field QB through the headset?

  21. buddhaboy Says:

    Trade Down and fill the holes???? The biggest hole besides lovie’s head is at quarterback.

    This decision is easy. Winston at 1

  22. BuccoDav Says:

    If my memory serves correct, Joe has railed numerous times over the past 2 years about the Bucs only playing half a game… Now he’s all in with the QB that only showed up for half a game most of last season. BTW, he showed up in the wrong half of his teams’ biggest game of the year.

  23. mark2001 Says:

    Trade down seems more and more the ticket…. unless all the background garbage about Winston turns out to be better than advertised.

  24. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @DEEnice

    “Winston haters ”

    Again there are two words be bandied about thoughlessly in this debate that I wish we could stop using. When you use these words it simply indicates a lack of vocabulary on the poster’s part or a poor thought out first.

    I’ll begin with Deenice’s tired word of the day HATERS. I get that just like gay the word hate has apparently picked up new meaning.

    I nor most of the posters here hate Jamies. We are AFRAID of Jameis. Big difference between hate and fear. And some would perhaps chastise me and say it’s not fear it’s common sense.!

    And can all of you Jameis supporters stop trying to wipe the slate clean as if close to a half dozen “documented” events never happen. They DID. It’s clearly a reflection of Jameis poor judgment.

    Now Joe and all of you can make the argument that he’s grown up, he’ll have a solid support team here in Tampa in DB55(the real one lol) and he’s worth the GAMBLE. But stop insulting our intelligence and trying to act like Jameis isn’t a GAMBLE based on his past actions. He IS. Doesn’t necessarily mean we shouldn’t take him. But those of you who don’t see the red flags or worse try and deny that they even exist need to take off the Garnett and Gold glasses or in Joe’s case back up take a deep breath and stop being so freaking desperate you’re willing to place your chips on the craps line. Yes you can win big that way but you can also lost.

    The other tired word. Thug!!! Jameis has done plenty to raise red flags, he’s done nothing of a “thuggish” nature.

    But this constant bickering over Jameis is just the start if we draft him. Mostly football freaks on this site, and almost 100% male. Trust me when you talk to more casual fans and especially women, they will not be happy with a Jameis selection. That’s simply a fact. If you think the reaction is bad here where we all WANT Jameis to be the right guy, wait until he’s picked and the general public weighs in.

    Again though I’m content to let L&L and Koetter make the call. I do not HATE Jameis, I simply fear wasting a #1 draft pick. Personally I hope the kid can get his head on straight, go to Tennessee and we get to face him in a Super Bowl in three years.

  25. R.O. Says:

    I think everyone missed the graphic at the beginning of the game. It said since 2010. Oregon has never overcome a deficit of more than 14 pts. Guess who has been the Qb for three of those years. He has no fire to rally his team. No desire. Those who want MM be careful what you wish for. You just might get it. None of you know JM.. None of you can judge him. I wish we could trade down to 6 with Jets. Let them take MM. We pick up a couple extra picks and can still walk away with JM. But that’s too far down. Not concerned with his antics. I want a winner. If we don’t take either, I’m fine with that also.

  26. Waterboy Says:

    I can’t believe all these debates are about behavior. Mariota isn’t even in the same ball park add Winston on a talent level. MM=RG3/Alex Smith/Kaepernick

  27. Teflon DON Says:

    i am so sick of all the commentators talking about maturity.. lets be real the kid just turned 21!!!!!! so you are telling me all you guys who are hating on him didnt make any immature decisions at that age? FOH

  28. Tom Edrington Says:

    @Waterboy:

    I’m not saying Winston has a poor vocabulary, it was someone who has direct knowledge, not me, all I asked was how he’d fare with his GM interviews…..I’m not judging, just reporting…..

    His words, not mine……learn the difference!

  29. Lovethepewter Says:

    Lol. I spoke with my direct connection to Winston and he said you’re an idiot.

  31. Chef Paul Says:

    St. Pete,

    Great Post. I agree with every word. Until the last paragraph. I think we should draft him. I’ll use your craps reference. You can win and you can lose playing craps. But if you don’t play, you are 100% guaranteed not to win. In real craps, though, you eventually run out of money. But in our case, we will always be in position to play craps until we finally do win. AND, we will always be in position to play craps if we never do actually play. I say, we need to take that gamble. You have to take chances to get ahead. Playing it safe usually gets you no where.

  32. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    Like I posted yesterday, Brett Favre (allegedly) texted his micro junk to a massage therapist 17 years into his pro career, and you guys are worried about Jameis saying FHITP, after false rape allegations?

    Do you think Favre exhibited good judgment? He showed the maturity of a teenager in his late 30’s!! And, you all know if the Bucs had been able to get him instead of Minnesota, no one would have complained about him doing that.

    But, Jameis is questionable??

    C’mon man.

  33. passthebuc Says:

    @Joe
    Last year it was Johnny football. This year its James. Your ability to evaluate talent is questionable. Why do’t you write about other possible first round options in detail. Trading down and pick collection. How many could we accumulate. what could be added with those picks. how that would change the offensive and defensive makeup.

  34. CAN'T FIX IT Says:

    SO YOU GUYS WANT WINSTON, WELL IF THE BUC’S DRAFT HIM AND HE TURNS OUT TO BE ALRIGHT THE FIRST YEAR AND THEN HE PULLS A FREEMAN. CAN’T SHOW UP FOR TEAM MEETINGS ON TIME , STOPS BEING A TEAM PLAYER, OVER THROWS RECIEVERS UNDER THROWS RECIEVERS AND CAN’T DO NOTHING RIGHT AND NOW THEY BENCH HIS ASS AND THEY LET HIM GO , AND WE ARE RIGHT BACK WHERE WE STARTED (NO Q/B) …. SO GO DRAFT HIM AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS !!!!!!!

  35. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Chef Paul

    See your post is exactly what I’m talking about. You made an excellent point that draws me into the draft Jameis crowd.

    You are correct. If you don’t gamble you can never win. If L&L and Koetter like the odds then I’ll support the decision.

    Thanks for a well thought out post that actually scores points for a Jameis pick without the BS.

    Again for the hater squad…
    \
    hate

    “he hates flying”

    People do not HATE Jameis. We don’t even know him. We are responding to clear red flags. You’d have a better chance of convincing us if you went the Chef Paul route and instead of denying that it’s a gamble make the point he did. Nothing ventured nothing gained. That is a LEGITIMATE reason to accept the red flags…as DB said plan for the behavior in advance with a support team here and take our chances.

    ALL draft picks are a crap shoots. It simply about the odds and upside. Chef Paul is the first person in two weeks to make me come back to the Jameis side of the debate.

  36. bucco brice Says:

    draft trade chart says Philadelphia would need to send a 1-2-3 in 2015 and 2016 for #1 pick…seems like a good haul for a “rebuilding” team lacking depth and many holes to fill 🙂

  37. BoltIsle Says:

    Disclaimer: Jameis Supporter

    I get the reasons for concern. Is he immature? Yes. The crab legs issue has been resolved through the legal system. Guess that’s not enough for a lot of people. The standing on a table yelling something? He sat out a game. Again, guess that’s not enough for some people.
    As for the allegation, is it possible that maybe he’s telling the truth? He admitted having consensual sex with her. I have a son and hope he never is accused of anything because he’ll be guilty regardless of the facts. So many act like they are speaking for all women by being against him being the pick. I know as many women who believe she is setting him up as there are saying he’s guilty until proven innocent. How many common students have to have a retired Chief Justice of the Florida Supreme Court administer their Code of Conduct hearing? Keep in mind that in that hearing, if he had been found only 51% guilty, he was out. So many needless personal attacks because people disagree with the ruling. For perpetuity, when you google his name, that allegation will always be there.
    If you have character concerns, fine. But isn’t it possible he may mature and not make those off field decisions? Check out Rand University sometime. Randy Moss had a lot worse red flags when he entered the league and he turned out ok.
    I have more concerns about the team picking than Jameis. Historically, they have a poor record of first round picks. Jameis will frustrate because he has Favre like confidence in his ability to throw. Like Favre, more times than not, he’s right. Not all the picks were his fault, but never once did you hear him throw his OL or WR’s under the bus for it. And like Mariota, who I am not against, his teammates love him.

  38. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    @St. Pete-

    This is about Brett Favre’s rookie year in Atlanta-

    “During the preseason, he completed 14 of 34 passes for 160 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. He was activated for three regular season games and had no completions in five attempts, with two of them intercepted. Furthermore, there were questions regarding his maturity and off-field lifestyle.”

    Ron Wolf took the risk and traded a first round pick for him. It paid off.

    It should be noted, Favre still had maturity issues (see my post about alleged dong text). But, he managed to become one of the greatest of all time (and the guy threw a few interceptions in his day.)

  39. flmike Says:

    @Love and Warrick Dunn

    Favre was not the first pick of the draft, nor was he drafted to save a franchise….

  40. Buc-O's 82 Says:

    Conveniently left out that his ‘mounted comebacks’ were mostly against UNRANKED TEAMS. There’s none of those in the NFL.

  41. Buczilla Says:

    Well, you all finally drove me back to the posting board. Look, if we even think of trading away the first overall pick for anything less than some teams next two entire drafts and a starting player, Licht should be fired on the spot.

    Do we need a better O-Line? Yes, any blind person could see that. Should that stop us from taking a QB number one over all? Not by a long shot. Say we trade down and get 4 or 5 extra picks and get a couple of serviceable linemen (after a couple years of development) and then we go looking for a QB. If we do get incrementally better and then we are picking from the middle to the lower third of the draft our chances at picking the QB of the future diminish greatly.

    Now as to Jameis, you can say you are afraid of him, or his off field antics scare you, but as a former college player I can tell you that he does not even move the needle on worrisome as compared to a lot of players coming out each and every year. Oh, and no you cannot compare the disciplinary actions of a lacrosse team to those of a football team. Sorry, that is just real world. The saintliest of players on my team (which is considered a straight and narrow program by most standards) used to get the “hook up” at local stores and restaurants.

    Has Jameis made some immature decisions? Yup. Anything to override his on field talent? Nope. Is he a sure thing? Hell no, but FAR better than most QBs coming out. I heard saw somebody compare him to Andrew Luck the other day on here and I almost spit out my adult beverage. However, I then decided to take a look. Not as far off as I imagined they might be:

    LUCK
    2009 13 TD 4 INT 143.5 Rating
    2010 32 TD 8 Int 170.2 Rating
    2011 37 TD 10 Int 169.7 Rating
    TOTALS 82 TD 22 Int 162.8 Rating

    WINSTON
    2013 40 TD 10 INT 184.3 Rating
    2014 25 TD 18 INT 145.5 Rating
    TOTALS 65 TD 28 INT 163.3 Rating

    Look, Luck clearly had the better college career and Winston’s numbers are a bit skewed because of the epic 2013 campaign, but there is no Andrew Luck coming out this year or any time soon. It is just the way it is. I think Winston is definitely the best prospect since.

    As far as interviews and lack of eloquence. Please tell me you are joking… You would not believe how horrible many of the guys in this league are at basic communication. Why do you think the same handful continually get interviewed. How do teammates respond? How is a player at communicating with a coach? What is there growth potential? Those are the questions that are asked. If you are interviewing a guy to date your daughter, than feel free to nitpick as much as you want; however, if you are looking for a player in the NFL… You better be focusing on what he can do for you between the lines.

    Rest assured, Tampa Bay’s security team will vet him and any other player they are seriously considering in ways that would make the NSA blush. If they think it is a no go, it doesn’t matter how much the fans want him it will be a no go. Any amount of conjecture on here will not affect that call one way or the other.

    OK, stepping down off soap box now… Have a nice day!

    —————-

    I agree with this! Winston is more a gamble when it comes to off-field behavior and MM is more of a gamble when it comes to on field production and whether he can adapt to the pro-game. I’d rather gamble on Winston.

  43. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    This has nothing to do with bashing Winston for me. This is more about evaluation.

    And he just has too many red flags.

    Yes, he was clutch in second halfs in college. He was horrible in first halfs though. There is a reason his team fell behind so often. And it wasn’t always because of the play of others.

    That concerns me.

    The second thing that bothers me is he doesn’t know how to lose. On the surface, some of you may think that’s a good thing, but it really isn’t. He self destructed during the bowl game. If anyone here thinks he can go undefeated in the NFL, speak up and expose your ignorance. How he handles adversity matters.

    So then, you may point out how much adversity he faced from the media in college. That discounts the fact that he himself generated that adversity. Handling it would have been to learn and correct himself. He did not. He continued to self destruct.

    The next thing that bothers me is the interceptions. I know someone is going to point out that all the greats had interceptions. That may be true, but his are happening for a reason. He stares down his target EVERY TIME.

    People point out how Mariota’s receivers are “always open”. People always point out that Winston throws into tight windows. Has ANYONE asked why those windows are so tight? It’s because he projects his throws. The defenses nearly always know where he is throwing, and in the NFL, that spells disaster.

    This past game, Ohio vs Oregon, I saw Mariota doing things people said he could not do. I saw him going long and being VERY accurate. I saw him staying in the pocket most of the time.

    All the while, fans here were commenting on how good Jones was. Jones had 3 games. That’s it. His impulse truly was run first. He has potential, but he is nowhere near being as good as either Winston or Mariota. Yet fans were talking about how the Bucs should make sure to draft him when he comes out.

    If the Bucs draft Winston, I will get behind him, but I will always wonder when the other shoe will drop. When will I hear on the news that he is in trouble…again and again. I do not expect him to be successful. I’m sorry.

    He just does not have the mental capacity to be successful in the NFL. Aside from book smarts. A strong mind is a disciplined mind. Winston cannot control his behavior on or off the field. Imagine him throwing 3 picks in a game (should happen often enough). Imagine the temper tantrums he will put on display. Imagine how he will blame everyone but himself. Imagine the press conferences where he does that. His teammates will turn on him within weeks.

    And regarding his accuracy…supposed accuracy, I mean, if he was that good, he would not have so many picks. Its that simple.

    LOOK AT HIS BALL PLACEMENT IN REGARD TO AN NFL CALIBER DEFENSE.

  44. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Chef Paul Says
    “I say, we need to take that gamble. You have to take chances to get ahead. Playing it safe usually gets you no where.”

    Would not that theory apply to both quarterbacks then? Winston AND Mariota?

    While some are saying take the chance on Winston, that taking the chance is worth it, they show a double standard because they are not willing to take a chance on Mariota as well. Right?

    Mind you, I’m as guilty of this as anyone, coming from the other viewpoint.

  45. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    @flmike Says:

    I never claimed he was. He was the third QB drafted, behind Dan McGuire, and Todd Marinovich.

    My point was, it’s the front office’s job to look at his background, and determine if it’s a worthwhile gamble. It was for GB (the trade). And, looking back, he was better than all 32 guys drafted ahead of him. The Bucs took Charles McCrae that year.

  46. Waterboy Says:

    @BuccaneerBonzai
    The gamble for Mariota is whether he’s even good enough to start and be productive in the pros. That’s not something you gamble in with the 1st pick.

  47. Chef Paul Says:

    Bonzai,

    What waterboy said.

    Granted, I havent watched as many games as most everybody, but when I turn on the TV or radio and I hear “x’s and o’s, this guy is like Andrew Luck,” when it comes to Winston, it makes me want to gamble. On the other hand gambling on a QB, from a Chip Kelly system is different. The odds alone of Spread option QB succeeding in the NFL are far. Then add a QB from a Chip Kelly system with Chip Kelly and his system’s influences gone, makes the odds skyrocket. Like Jeff Tedford’s college QB’s.

  48. bucco brice Says:

    both QB’s are “projected” to be franchise QB’s …they aren’t can’t miss prospects like Luck….trade down or Leonard Williams is the man…

  50. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

    Winston will need to work on throwing mechanics and pocket presence. Also, his underneath reads will need to improve dramatically at this level. Not saying he can’t do it, just saying he has to do it.

  51. Mr. Patrick Says:

    The reason that Winston had so many second half comebacks was because he threw so many first half interceptions to bad teams. He is just not as good as his hype. Winston is the second coming of Byron Leftwich

    People! it’s been 27 years since the Bucs had the first over all pick. It could be another 27 years or longer before it happens again. We don’t have a franchise QB, never really have. Here’s our chance to (roll the dice) on a possible franchise QB (Winston). You don’t trade down to get a couple extra players instead of a potential Franchise QB that could lead our team for at least 10 years. Trading down to avoid risk? you still have risk that another team will get that franchise QB instead. You still have risk with each and every player you draft with those extra picks (example – Mark Barron). You don’t trade down to avoid risk. You make your evaluations of players, build your draft board and go with it. If a QB grades out to go with the #1 pick and your a franchise that’s never had a franchise QB you gotta go for it.There’s risk no matter what. Take the best pro – type QB. Winston!!!!

  57. Tiny Tim Says:

    I’m glad to know that any time a qb throws a pick, its all his fault. It can’t be the WR running the wrong route, or a WR letting a pass go off his hands into the defender’s hand or the offensive line not doing its job and allowing a defender to get in there and hit the qb on the release etc. Its also good to know that Jimbo Fisher stated only maybe 8 of the INT was Winston fault ie trying to do to much etc. That is why some of you posters are clueless an not even worth a response from knowledgeable fans.

    You do know he was majoring in pre-med before changing his major to biomedical Engineering and has a 3.8 gpa.

    ************************

    Would love to know where you pulled that BS from. It seems every time someone defends Winston’s intelligence his GPA keeps going up. At one point he had a 3.4 then it went up to a 3.6 and now it is at a 3.8. It truly is amazing. Also, last year he had no major has he was doing an Exploratory degree, which means he was doing electives. Also, have a general science major does not make one a pre-med. Also, an article from Jul 2014 said he was a social science major with a minor in business.

    “I was always raised as a student first and an athlete second,” said Winston, a social sciences major with a minor in business. “I think that’s the main purpose in college. Some athletes lose that perspective. It’s about being a student-athlete, and not just getting that easy money and going to the league. Even if kids leave early, I would want them to come back and get that degree.” Imagine if he could hear himself now.

  59. Waterboy Says:

    On Mike and Mike they just asked Chris Carter his thoughts on Mariota after seeing him up close and personal the other night and his response was “inaccurate, his coaches aren’t fully confident in him passing the ball down the field, there passing tree is totally different than the average passing tree of most teams”. He later went on to say that he felt that he could be good at the next level if put in a situation where he was given time but also made mention of how at the next level fans and teams are very impatient and used the EJ Manual situation as an example.

  60. Pickgrin Says:

    Its an easy decision. Jameis Winston is the best QB prospect to become available to the NFL in the last 3 years. The Bucs desperately need help at the QB position and have the #1 pick. None of Winston’s “bad decisions” are significant enough to keep him off the field and many who express serious “concerns” about his “behavior” have done worse things in their life than Jameis has (minus the intense scrutiny as well).

    Look up and watch the video “Winston Elite 11” that Waterboy referenced above – and hear Trent Dilfer tell an 18 y.o. Jameis –
    “You are one of the smartest kids I’ve ever been around”

    So yes Bucs – do your due diligence. Go over everything you can find out about Winston with a fine tooth comb and spend hours talking to him picking his brain about all things football and let him answer 1st hand any questions you have about the behavioral concerns. Then draft him #1 and don’t look back. It will be one of the best moves this franchise has ever made.

    I predict that within 2-3 years Winston will be considered a top 10 NFL QB – just as the 2 gems from the draft 3 years ago – Luck and Wilson (who are both 1 game away from a Super Bowl) are considered today.

  61. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

    Either QB will need to sit the first season to progress. Glennon didn’t get that luxury, but we should afford it to our next rookie. Learn from mistakes, right? Winston will need to work on throwing mechanics and pocket presence. Also, his underneath reads will need to improve dramatically at this level. Not saying he can’t do it, just saying he has to do it. Mariota will need to work on playcalling and some of his drop back from under center. Work on staying in the pocket just a little bit longer.

  62. Tiny Tim Says:

    Please tell me where you pulled your information ie exploratory degree. I believe the business degree you are talking about in July was from profootbalk where Florio says Winston should change his degree to business because Winston was saying college athletes should not be paid. If you want further proof…here are a couple of links….I hope Joe does not mind me sharing links from other sites

    I hope this clears things up for you.

  63. Waterboy Says:

    Not to mention Winston already makes all of his protection calls and pre-snap adjustments. So that’s also something Mariota will have to work on.

  64. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

    @Waterboy,

    That is something all QBs have to work on. Winston will still have to work on those as well. Staffords OC said this year that they gave him a lot more responsibilities this year on top of what he was already doing. He is in his 5th year of being a Pro and he still hasn’t gotten all the responsibilities of a QB yet? I would be curious on how long it takes for a Franchise QB to get all the responsibilities of being a QB. You can see that Manning and Brady do everything already.

  65. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

    “Following the season-ending loss to the Dallas Cowboys — Stafford’s best game of the season — offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi told the Lions official team website that he had heaped more responsibility on Stafford than even Drew Brees had early in his days with the New Orleans Saints.

    “Looking back, I kind of try to drop maybe some responsibilities on him that maybe a quarterback like Drew didn’t get until four years into the system in New Orleans,” Lombardi said. “We asked a lot of him, and he responded. There is a tax when you ask a quarterback maybe to do that much and the more comfortable he gets the lower that tax will be.”

    Lombardi mentioned aspects such as play checks, protections and blocking scheme calls, among others. “

  66. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

    @Tiny Tim

    The exploratory degree comes directly from the FSU website.

    Also, I don’t believe anything that his father says. His father lies to the media more than anything. He is always saying something about Jameis and it is more often than not false.

  67. Tiny Tim Says:

    @ skyline

    You are sadly mistaken if you think Jameis has to sit a year. I have read how pro front office scouts say that Winston is rated a notch below how Luck graded out and Winston is graded higher than Cam, Stafford, and Bradford all #1 picks when they were coming out of college. It is ok to not want Winston because of his off the field issues, but to make up things and to nit pick this guy is crazy. He already has shown the ability to do everything a nfl qb is asked to do and that is why it should be no question who the Bucs take.

    Mariotta doesn’t even an offense where you can pass in the redzone because its an offense based on deception and speed in space. In the redzone, its not that much space and windows are tighter. Mariotta would have to learn how to pass in the redzone too.

  68. Tiny Tim Says:

    @skyline

    Well then you don’t believe him if you want to. Not sure how Winston’s father became a liar. Whatever you say. Its obvious you don’t like Winston no matter what and that is fine. And the page you reference says nothing about his degree. It only states his college accolades. It does say he was all ACC honor roll for two years. I don’t believe the school can put anything like that on their site due to Ferpa laws etc. Or maybe I did not see where it said Explatory degree. Can you point it out?

  69. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

    Winston’s father said his son was going to stay and get his degree. Then he said his son was going to make a decision after the championship game. Then his father said his son was going to make a decision in a day. Then we all found out that Winston’s father had declared him. His father seems to be trying to get spotlight time and his father makes crap up to get news stories. Don’t believe him when he speaks. Kind of like the boy who cried wolf.

  70. Twizzylax Says:

    Skyline, that page says the academic update was from the spring of 2013, when he likely hadn’t declared his major yet because he was in his second semester of his freshman year. Pretty sure his dad can be trusted in articles from this past fall more than an update from nearly two years ago. The football page has more updates, but doesn’t state his major… http://www.seminoles.com/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=209573010&DB_OEM_ID=32900

  71. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

    @Tiny Tim

    Scouts have said Mariota is below Luck and above RG3. Doesn’t really matter until we the see the combine and how well they truly grade out. Of course that doesn’t matter either. What does matter is what Lovie and Licht thing. Possibly Koetter will have a say as well.

    Also, I didn’t say Winston had to sit a year. I said who ever we sit should sit a year to develop. I already addressed the on field issues that Winston has. They are all fixable, but I would like for him to sit a year and fix them.

  72. Twizzylax Says:

    Sky, don’t you think his father is perhaps speaking for him due to the past controversy? Also, his father stated at the beginning of the football season that he was expecting to stay. After the season, he said that a lot had changed since then, so Jameis hadn’t made a decision and it would come after the NC game. However, they made the decision earlier because his father said there was too much press around him, so he wanted to get the decision out and begin moving forward. I’m not sure how that’s a problem at all.

  73. Tiny Tim Says:

    So someone changing their minds equates to lying? Really? You know I said I was going to take a dump at 2pm, but instead I decided to take a dump at 1:30pm. Does that make me a liar? Geez man you are so far removed from reality its not funny. Every kids intentions when they first go to college is to complete their degree. Things and life happens which causes you to take a detour or change your plans. That does not make you a liar, but because it is Winston, we make it more than what it is.

    Just like people like you wanted to condemn the young man when he said he wanted to concentrate on getting better and his baseball season right after the loss to Oregon. You and others said he is not committed to football yada yada yada. Mariotta after his lost said he may not enter the draft to complete his Masters after the loss to OSU, but none of you Winston bashers said anything. People like you are too funny.

  74. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

    A social science degree is not pre-med.

  75. Tiny Tim Says:

    Show me where Mariotta was graded just below Luck. Now you are making up stuff.

  76. Tiny Tim Says:

    I am not sure where you got a social science degree from so I am not sure what you are talking about.

  77. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

    I didn’t condemn him for wanting to play baseball. I’ll call you a liar for that.

    Wilson still goes to the Rangers training camp to make face. No reason Winston can’t do the same thing.

    I already posted that.

  79. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

    So you think people who were concerned about Winston not being all in on football because he wanted to play baseball were wrong. But people who aren’t getting on Mariota for wanting to get a Masters while playing football are wrong? That makes no sense man and you say I’m removed from reality.

  80. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

    NFL.com

    “An NFL general manager told mmqb.si.com that the Oregon quarterback, who has yet to announce whether he will enter the 2015 draft, falls between where Luck and RGIII were rated as draft prospects. That comes just days after an NFL college scouting director told NFL Media’s Albert Breer that he expects to give Mariota a higher grade than Griffin as well. On top of that, an NFL personnel director regards Mariota as a “safer” pick than Griffin, according to MMQB’s Peter King, because he played more effectively from the pocket this season than Griffin did at Baylor.”

    I know you Mariota bashers don’t really like to read up on Mariota, but if you guys took the same effort in finding articles about Winston you would find them about Mariota.

  81. Tiny Tim Says:

    And it doesn’t freaking matter if what degree he is majoring in. I bet you were not smart enough to get a scholarship to Stanford. And I am willing to bet you are not a 3 time ACC honor roll receipient. You are nit picking

  82. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

    You are the one that brought up he was a pre-med and biometric engineer. Now you are getting defensive about it. Interesting. I wasn’t a high profile athlete, so no I didn’t get a scholarship to Stanford to play sports. You are right. And I didn’t go to school in the ACC so no I was not a 3 time ACC honor roll recipient.

  83. Tiny Tim Says:

    I see your comprehension is not so good. I did not say you said something about Winston playing baseball. I said people like you had a problem with him playing baseball. Yet we want to condemn Winston for his vocabulary. Too funny.

  84. Tiny Tim Says:

    Again your comprehension is awful. I said people got on Wnston because he said he was concentrating on his upcoming baseball season right after a loss when asked if he was declaring for the draft. When Mariotta was asked after his loss was he declaring for the draft, he said he may stay in school to finish his masters without anyone condemning him like they did winston. That is what I said.

  85. Tiny Tim Says:

    No, you did not get a scholarship from Stanford because you are not smart enough to based on you comprehension skills I am not surprised. And I am willing to bet you have never been a 3time honor roll recipient at any college based on your comprehension skills. Its ok. What you don’t understand is those who prefer Winston over mariotta point out facts ie system qb, one read system, never took snap under center, all spread qbs put up great numbers etc. Winston bashers have to result in calling this guy names, saying he isn’t smart when his degree of choice shows otherwise but can’t state the obvious. Winston is by far the better qb. Deal with it

    Vince Young had a lot of comebacks in college…..how did that work out for the Titans? Leftwich lead a comeback on a broken leg, top that Winston!! Its funny to see all the FSU fans argue for Winston. Someone please try and argue the fact that he has horrible throwing mechanics and sloppy footwork. How is he more NFL ready when his mechanics are worse then Johnny Manziels and everyone claimed he wasnt NFL ready and they were all correct!!! Ya know why Winston had so many come from behind wins, cause his team was far more talented then the teams he was playing and in the second half of all those games Winston stopped playing for the other team and allowed his fellow teamates to make plays and win those games! We have seen a lot of great College Qbs who were duds in the NFL, one thing they all had in common…..Bad Mechanics!!! ask Tebow!

    I didn’t say anything. You can try going back on what you said, but that is what you said. And my point still stands about Mariota. So maybe you comprehension is a little taxed right now. It was a nice debate while it lasted, but I can see this one is over already as you have no idea what you were talking about.

    Also, I never said anything about his vocabulary.

  89. Tiny Tim Says:

    Boy your comprehension is so weak I am done arguing with you. I will make it very elementary for you. When I said people like you, I mean those who obviously hate Winston like you seem to do. I did not nor do I know every post you made about Winston personally so therefore I could not accuse you personally for saying that. I do know many haters of Winston condemned him for stating he was concentrating on baseball and that is why I said people like you (also a hater of Winston). If I wanted to say you personally had a problem with his baseball decision, I would have said you personally had a problem like I am saying you personally have comprehension issues. No need to further discussing with you because I am losing you on simple stuff.

    This kid is Cardale Jones without the good attitude. Where Cardale Jones knows he is not ready – Jameis thinks he is. Like those that love him, Jameis doesn’t REALLY think he needs to change anything. Just saying your sorry for your mishandling, misspeaking, mis-stepping, (etc).

    Jameis’ needed to change A) attitude B) take coaching…for two years, has shown zero improvement, keeps trying to the same things to achieve different results…while nearly letting the Clemson game get away from him, and ultimately being exposed in the Rose Bowl.

    I pretty happy the Bucs won’t be picking the kid…unless he does a Johnny Football (which I think he WILL do).

    While I may/may not be entertaining the idea of what it might look like if our Bucs went DE with the 1st overall – I’m still pretty impressed with Mariota. He lost while playing within his system, keeping his team competing til the end…and his team did NOT quit on him.
