Jameis Watch: “Perennial Pro Bowler”

January 11th, 2015

jameis 0108

Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, former national champion Jameis Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon and Josh McCown.

It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback to wear No. 5 ever in the state of Florida.

Often, very often, guys who never made it to the NFL or who had forgettable NFL careers make the best analysts. Quick, what NFL team did Bill Belicheat play for? Or Bill Walsh? Or Mike McCarthy? The list goes on and on and on.

That is why Joe does not dismiss borderline NFL players. At all. One’s ability to play has zero connection to how well he breaks down players and the game itself. That brings Joe to BSPN analyst Danny Kanell.

The former NFL signal-caller pretty much had a garbage pro career, yet squeezed seven seasons out of his limited talent. He played the game and knows what it takes to succeed in the NFL, partially because he didn’t succeed.

Kanell is not only in the Jameis Winston camp as being a stud NFL prospect, but also believes Winston is a future elite NFL quarterback, so he recently told Matt Baker of the Tampa Bay Times.

Former FSU QB Danny Kanell said he believes Winston should be the No. 1 pick because of the system he runs with the Seminoles and his ability to take hits in the pocket.

“I think the upside potential is infinite with Jameis Winston, I really do,” said Kanell, now an ESPN analyst. “I think he can be a perennial Pro Bowler at the next level.”

Joe always listens to folks who either played the game or worked in an NFL office making a living breaking down players. Joe emphasizes those guys, rather than those who hope to work in the NFL and flood Twitter with their own breakdowns.

The list of NFL types giving Winston a thumbs-up continues to mushroom.

Is that an ace bandage around Winston’s head?
He may have strained his brain studying for his upcoming drug test.
    🙂

Former FSU Qb….. No bias there? None at all.

Joe, it’s January, the playoffs are still happening, and we are 3+ months from the draft. We have time to analyze much more than the 1 QB entering the NFL Draft. Teach me about the OL and DL studs coming out. We need those guys too.

  4. John McKillop Says:

Again I don’t have a preference as to which quarterback is chosen by the Bucs. The fact of the matter is just like Oregon quarterbacks, Jimbo system quarterbacks haven’t found success in the NFL either. Not one qb Jimbo has sent to the NFL has had success without him, that is a fact. The draft is a crapshoot at best, especially picking quarterbacks. Whichever one the Bucs choose we can only hope he is successful. Go Bucs!

  5. Bird Says:

    Damn. Joe buc
Can we keep it under one Jameis article a day.

  6. WINdycitybuc Says:

I wonder what Kanell thought of himself coming out of college? And of course he is being totally objective considering he went to FSU, as well (wink wink). I am personally not ready to draft Winston based on what Danny Kanell says, but those that believe in the thesis that mediocre players are viable talent evaluators…sleep easy tonight…Danny Kanell (can’t stop laughing) has got your back.

  7. IK Says:

Did anyone else notice the swan neck deformity of Winston’s ring finger on his throwing hand?
It was very apparent when he was showing 4 fingers at the start of the 4th quarter in the semi-final game.
It is not his thumb or index finger but I have to think it would affect his grip on the football.

  8. Mr. Patrick Says:

Let’s see, how did the last two QB’s that came out of that FSU pro style system do in the NFL after being picked in the 1st round? Kanell said great things about their future success also.

  9. Eric Says:

Man if these playoffs don’t convince the folks at OBP that we need a QB, they all need to be committed.

    What a throw by Rodgers.

  10. LargoBuc Says:

Winston has talent and can run a pro style offense. No one doubts that. But will he give 110 percent every day for the Bucs? What will winston do when things get tough? How will this kid stand up to adversity? Those are the things many people wonder. Would Winston even want to play here? He’s going from FSU with all the swagger and a winning culture to the Buccaneers. The lamest team in the NFL. The refs could blow a call against us but it’s just Tampa no one would care. Would Jameis want to play for that? Is Winston willing to put in the hard work to change our loser culture? If not we just wasted the first overall pick.

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Now we’ve come to using most of the article to defend the analyst. Wow….I’m impressed.

Joe took the time for the crowd that rips analysts because, say, a guy wasn’t a Pro Bowl player. –Joe

I wonder what some of the mentioned ex players/experts are getting to promote jameis? it is starting to look like a conspiracy.
time to get scully and muldar from the x files to investigate the anti mariota conspiracy.
the same thing happed years ago with aaron Rodgers pre draft day. the experts/ ex players/ ex coaches were seriously wrong about aaron Rodgers. I am starting to think if the bucs trade down they might pick up mariota late in the 1st round like aaron Rodgers/or teddy bridgewater.

  13. cmurda Says:

Wow. Dez Bryant and the Cowboys just completely got railroaded on that replay reversal. No way. Terrible call.

  15. Eric Says:

Winston is known as the hardest worker on FSU’s team.

Going 13-0 with BSPN and the NYT’s engaging in a never ending witch hunt against him tells me he is very good with adversity……

  16. Eric Says:

Shades of Bert Emanuel…..got to hold onto the ball all the way through the catch. Nose hit the ground and he lost control.

  19. Buc-O's 82 Says:

Kanell thinks? Boy Joe digging way deep in the pile of losers to find some back his agenda ridden chase for Shameis , the jail bird that threw 17 picks against unranked teams. All of Joe’s picks seem to be boat anchors (Johnny Football was his pick last year). Well at least he’s consistent.

  20. LJS4th Says:

Also could be a perennial pain in the @ss to the team and law enforcement in Tampa. No one knows, but the question is do we want to? The Bucs can not afford to make a mistake with this pick and Winston has to many issues to take that chance.

  21. Eric Says:

Winston has never been to jail.

    Try again.

  22. Tom Edrington Says:

This Jameis Watch nonsense is seriously and totally, officially, without a shadow of a doubt, heinously and incurably OUT OF CONTROL….

    Simple as that…..

  23. Mr. Patrick Says:

Lovie, Licht and the Glazers know that the vast majority of Buc’s fans don’t want Turd Winston here. The very last thing that the Bucs want or need is all of the controversy and the circus coming to town.

  24. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

Any ideas about O-line prospects or FA’s to pick up? Because without them, Winston (or any other QB for that matter) will not even make it to the start of Pro Bowl voting without getting blasted by an NFL front 7.

  25. Buccfan37 Says:

I thought that Bryant catch was down at the 1 yard line. Oh well, Cowboys sent packing once again. You gotta love it. Fans might have to picket OBP in droves to draft Winston, not that it would do any good.

  26. BucDaddy Says:

  27. ihateloviesmith Says:

hey joe how about entertaining some articles on petty, or the other QBs coming out at the draft, we as fans would like your input on this matter, seeing that there is a real possibility of trading away our spot for more picks in this years draft, it would be very informative on your thoughts as well as other analysts and broadcasters of who is expected to be not only serviceable but could be and should be successful in the league to come.

  28. foghead407 Says:

  32. BucDaddy Says:

Winston reminds me of……(in no particular order) Vince Young, Ryan Leaf, JaMarcus Russell, EJ Manuel, Christian Ponder, Blaine Gabbert, Andre Ware, David Klingler, David Carr, Todd Blackledge, Rick Mirer, Heath Shuler, Tim Couch, Art Schlichter, Scott Mitchell.

  33. Eric Says:

Mariota just got a speeding ticket.

He must have been drunk and the cop let him go cause of who he is.

Can’t draft a guy who can’t obey traffic laws.

  34. Bangkok Buc Says:

Love the site Joe but agree with pancake. Losing interest in coming to the site to see redundant Jameis articles with no objectivity with other prospects. This will be my last reply. Hopefully other who agree will follow suit and the overall lack of activity will lead you to diversify your posts.
    Come on Joes!!!!!

  38. cmurda Says:

Ah, the good ole Bert Emanuel catch. Brings tears to my eyes. I’ll still argue anybody that Emanuel caught that ball. I think Dez caught that one. Clear control of the ball reaching for the TD Line. Ground caused the ball to move after the catch. I miss the old days. If it even looked like you caught it for a nanosecond, it was a catch. But then again, you used to be able to John Lynch somebody and you can’t do that anymore. From now on until HOF nomination, I’m calling any hard hit a John Lynch.

  39. Dave Pear Says:

    @Nate,
Where do you want me to send to?

  40. BucDaddy Says:

Top-rated seniors at positional needs: OT: Brandon Scherff (Iowa), Cedric Ogbuehi (Texas A&M), La’el Collins (LSU); Pass rusher: Vic Beasley (Clemson), Alvin Dupree (Kentucky), Owamagbe Odighizuwa (UCLA); QB: Sean Mannion (Oregon State), Garrett Grayson (Colorado State), Bryce Petty (Baylor)

  41. BucDaddy Says:

The Bucs probably could use two offensive linemen. I’d move LT Anthony Collins to guard, where I think he’s better suited, and draft a left tackle. They need to upgrade at quarterback. Josh McCown isn’t a long-term solution and Mike Glennon is a marginal NFL talent.

  42. Eric Says:

Wow Marcus was going 80 in a 55. Should have been arrested for reckless driving.

    No character.

    Along with no pro arm.

  43. CAN'T FIX IT Says:

I’M TIERD OF SEEING WINSTON ON HERE HOW ABOUT PUTTING MARITOA ON AND SAYING SOMETHING GOOD ABUT HIM EVERY DAY…….

  44. rayjay1122 Says:

What? 80 in a 55? What a half ass effort. I prefer 155 in a 70. Damned governor. Lol. I do miss the auto bahns in Germany at least in non populated areas where speed limits were not in place.

  45. Tampa2Dominates Says:

All I hear is Winston this and Winston that. Look if they take Winston, I will support him(unlike most people who wouldn’t support Glennon). However, I want to propose an idea. I know it is a radical one, but hear me out. How about we take the long term prospect instead of the quick fix. I realize Jameis Winston is the best pro ready quarterback, but so is Josh McCown. I don’t have a problem with sitting a number 1 pick the first year. We rushed Steve Young, we rushed Vinny T, we rushed Trent Dilfer, we rushed Josh Freeman. Let’s draft the more dynamic player, sit him for the year, build the roster up, give Lovie the job security that Gus Bradley has to develop the defense and build the O-Line and hand over the reigns to Mariotta in 2016 with a rebuilt O-line, an improved defense, and Quarterback the community can be proud of leading our team.

  46. Jj Says:

  49. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I was enormously relieved when we signed Koettler. I now believe the Bucs will have or perhaps already have a plan. But there is a long time until the draft and so much will change.

But ALL former FSU players are not so sure about Jameis. Did you all read Rick Stroud’s piece on Derrick Brooks opinion this morning. He has not signed off on Jameis at all and has his own doubts.

Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston isn’t prepared for what comes with being the No. 1 overall pick and the Bucs would need safeguards in place to help him mature as an NFL player.

That’s according to Hall of Fame linebacker Derrick Brooks, who played for both the Seminoles and Bucs and has a personal relationship with Winston.

“I think that’s got to be two-fold,” Brooks said. “I think Jameis has to have his own plan of maturity and his representatives discuss that and he be able to communicate that during personal interviews with teams. And whatever team that does it is going to have to have that internal player development for him as well. To say that he’s ready? No. He’s not. He’s not ready for being in this position and what this position calls for. He can’t (be). He can’t imagine it. He hasn’t been through it. But you can plan for it. The team that has the Bucs’ pick…when is the last time they had the No. 1 overall pick? It’s been awhile. So the team has to prepare with what comes with being in this position.”

Brooks said he had several talks with Winston that were productive but would have to do more research before selecting him.

“But now, this is a different ballgame, different level, different time,” Brooks said, “Different circumstances. So I would have to get to know him a little bit better before I put out points of a plan.”

When pressed for whether he would select Jamies with the No. 1 overall pick, Brooks said he would keep his options open.

That’s not exactly a ringing endorsement from DB!

  50. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

  51. Eric Says:

I got an idea, what are the three worst things any of you guys did in college?

As I understand it the proven allegations against Winston are shooting BB guns on campus, shouting obscenities in the student lounge, and stealing crab legs.

    I’ll start.

I got drunk one night and fell asleep on the hood of a squad car, cheated my ass off on several exams, and submitted a term paper I never wrote or even read.

Any of you guys ever do anything? Nah of course not.

  52. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Yes Eric because a speeding ticket is the same as getting a girl high and doing her in front of your friends while they video the event. Genuine class!

A speeding ticket is the same as getting up in a student building and screaming F her in the P….real class

I don’t hold the crab legs against Jameis because I accept the explantion that Publix managers in Tallahassee are jock sniffers who let FSU stars (not to pick on FSU I’m sure it happens in Gainesville or Tampa with the Bucs) walk out with stuff free…and so that was an “honest” mistake.

The bb gun is young dudes playing around…get it…

Yelling at your receivers and coach is just firing everybody up I get it.

I had to choke down jacka$$ Warren Sapp and since we were winning I held my nose and celebrated his sacks.

But with the face of the franchise….that’s simply going to be a lot tougher.

  53. Rrsrq Says:

Joe you got em’ feigning for Winston, feed the beast

  54. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I’m a bad example Eric. I went to Vietnam first and so by the time I got back I was already 21 and used the GI bill to go to school as well as working 30-40 hours in Delta Airlines reservations. I didn’t really have the time to get into to much trouble. Smoked some weed. So perhaps there’s envy in me that Jameis has had it freaking handed to him on a silver platter, born with a 6-5 230lb body and a 97MPH fastball.

Now if you add in Vietnam and Thailand I certainly f’d them in the p…but I had to pay for it, and I was doing what 90% of the other guys were doing in the anonymity of a war zone across an ocean not under the white hot light of being a Heisman Trophy winner.

As Derrick Brooks pointed out in that Stroud article can you imagine the pub here in Tampa if Jameis comes to town. Fairly or not. Even if he’s a choir boy from here on in.

  60. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I think it’s just too bad that QB is perceived as the face of the franchise. If Jameis was a WR we could hide him and keep our squeakly clean choirboy GMC as the face of our franchise. But that’s just not the way it works.

Not even the girl said she was high, or that Winston even gave her a drink.

She said she went to his apartment and went to his bedroom – all voluntarily (obviously to recite poetry).

Now let me ask you guys a question, try and put your hatred of Winston aside for just a minute. Your in college, you meet a girl for the first time at a bar, get her number, while outside the bar you text her to ask if she wants to come home with you. She agrees (it’s 1:00 am). She goes with you and two of your friends in a cab to your apartment. She then goes with you alone back to your bedroom, away from everyone else in the apartment.

Do you really believe she wasn’t there to have sex?

  63. Rob Says:

This site is getting unbearable with the nonsensical Winston pumping. It’s as bad as Manziel last year, maybe worse. If this is how it’s going to be until the end of April, I’m going to have to get my Bucs news elsewhere…

To answer your question…no, of course she was there to have sex.
That’s why all charges were dropped.
Too many inconsistencies in her story.
    Case dismissed!

  66. Eric Says:

Thank you Mr. Pear, I always admired your fist pumps during games.

  67. Dewey Selmon Says:

This site is the best to get info on the Buccaneers. Joe puts alot of time and effort to keep this site running. Some people have a lot of nerve to tell this man what to and what not to put on HIS website. If you don’t like his content then start your own site or hit the bricks and go to BSPN. It would suck if Joe packed it in and closed up shop. Some of you people will never be happy and will never stop complaining.

Joe thrives on the controversy and has no problems with readers who respectfully disagree with him…..I can’t imagine a site with a bunch of sheep…..Joe isn’t the Pied Piper.
And FYI….in case you haven’t noticed…..Joe is perfectly capable of taking care of himself and can pull the plug on anyone he likes.
Joe attracts readers for his advertisers…..the more readers…the more advertisers….more controvery….more readers & so on….

First off, you are dead wrong. And it’s comical that you think this way. Joe would thrive much, much more if the Bucs were a good team sans controversy, like the ones we’re watching in January. Look around the stadium. A percentage of fans check out when the team is miserable. The Bucs are 30-70 in their last 100 games. Controversy is not what generates readers. Heck, Joe’s “Jameis Watch” isn’t even close to the most read pieces on the site every day. Stick to reading and talking about football.–Joe

Listen…you can’t control the W-L record…..and I’m sure the Tribune, NY Times, WTVT…..FOX NEWs and others would disagree…..or maybe they wouldn’t admit it….but Controversy absolutely sells!!! You are dead wrong….

  74. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Joe’s “Jameis Watch” isn’t even close to the most read pieces on the site every day

The combination of Jameis Watch & other Articles surrounding the QB positon dwarf all other JBF articles….and they have…..from Freeman to Glennon to McCown to Winston vs Mariota…..

Controversy is perhaps the only thing that fuels interest especially when you are losers on the field.

  75. rayjay1122 Says:

I think that most of us agree that we have all done things that were at least shameful if not criminal in our lives. Winston just got attention brought to some of his exploits. I am in no position to judge him. It is totally wise however to fear that he could potentially run into issues at the next level. I do not know exactly what Freeman lost his career to but we can’t afford to lose another 1st round QB with franchise potential to legal issues, league suspension or just turning into a head case due to breaking rules. So, I am OK with Winston if he is truly the best QB available but at this point I feel like it is very risky unless he truly matures quickly. Picking Winston is like being dealt 2 aces in Blackjack, you split them and hope for two 21s but can just as easily wind up with two twelves. Taking Mariota is like doubling down on a 10 when the dealer has a 6 showing. No guarantee of winning either way. Both of these rookie QBs are gambles but you have to play to win.

  76. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

Some interesting stats in the TBT this morning that I think are worthy of their own post:

“Mariota threw the ball 27 times during the first half of the Rose Bowl. All but five of those involved some sort of misdirection: a pump fake to a receiver, a designed quarterback rollout, a fake handoff to a teammate, or some combination of the three.

According to profootballfocus.com, Mariota used play action on 51 percent of his 372 passes during the regular season”

“Only two quarterbacks in the coun try have thrown for more yards than Marcus Mariota, but his passes are usually short rather than downfield. Here’s a breakdown of how far his 36 Rose Bowl passes traveled:

    0-5 yards downfield: 20
    6-10 yards downfield: 3
    11-20 yards downfield: 8
more than 20 yards downfield: 5”

That style of play does not work in “the league.” Can MM learn to play the position like a pro? Maybe, maybe not. Can Jameis. Yes he can. We know that because we’ve seen it for the last 2 years game in and game out.

  77. 87ForJameisNoMariota Says:
