Jameis Watch: “The Only Choice”

January 10th, 2015

jameis winston 1113

Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, former national champion Jameis Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon and Josh McCown.

It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback to wear No. 5 ever in the state of Florida.

A guy Joe wishes would get a job at a big time network would be Emory Hunt. You know, the Czar of the Playbook?

Hunt does a weekly video of top NFL games and he really does a lot of research and uses his information in easy-to-understand sound bytes. You won’t hear Hunt talking much about “Banana-Y-Two” routes without explaining what they are.

In breaking down college prospects, Hunt said the Bucs should already have their mind made up. And that decision, Hunt said, is Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston.

Obviously, this was posted before just before Winston declared for the draft. But the point is clear.

Once again, for the reading impaired, Joe would be content with Marcus Mariota and would be OK with sitting him for a season so he can learn an NFL offense. Joe just thinks with the Bucs having the top pick, they should pick the top quarterback: Winston.

The stars are aligned for Jameis to come to the Bucs. Don’t mess with the football gods.

You cannot read the “tweet” and determine when it was posted?

For they share two of the same qualities, Really good, Not great arm talent; and a tendency to hit defenders square in the numbers.

We need to Draft Mariota and then let Koetter and his Qb coach groom Marcus Mariota into the next great Pass first Mobile Qb, even if it means we sit him for a season or two. Mariota’s ceiling is sky high man, I don’t know how you can’t see that. This duck is not like the others Joe, it’s plain for any one with an open mind to see.

  20. OB Says:

For those of you that think that the number one pick could be so dumb that it would take an entire season to learn an offense is amazing. Neither Winston nor Mariota is dumb, Winston maybe stupid about his off field activities but he is not dumb, Mariota is smart about on and off field.

I am happy with either, I like Mariota better and will see more of him in the Championship game against another good defense. but it is what the new OC wants and believes will be best for the future that should and must happen.

    @gatrbuc17

Hang in there….there are many of us who are. I fear the deliberate attempt to push one choice is polarizing the readers…..It was different last year because the choice wasn’t clear if we were even going to draft a QB and if Manziel would even be there when we picked. I just hope when all this is over we don’t continue to be force-fed Jameis.
I actually have stated that I could accept any decision that is made…but I would sleep better if it was Mariota.

  26. CruelBuc Says:

Winston should be the pick. Since when are we so perfect that we crucify a college kid for being a college kid? Aside from the rape **ALLEGATIONS**..are we mad b/c he yelled a popular internet phrase or shot BB guns or lifted freaking CRABS?? Grow up, pls. It’s all so petty, lol. We’re talking football and the kid is far & away the best QB in the nation. I don’t wanna bank on us getting the next Russell Wilson in Mariota..these ‘athletic’ guys win how often? Go down the list of them and think about it. Russell is an anomaly, not a trend. Give me the pocket passer with scrambling ability. Give me the guy who rallys his offense and exudes confidence on the sidelines no matter the situation. Give me the guy w/ that CLUTCH GENE baby – in my Skip B voice. Leave the propaganda and gossip to the females, fellas..it’s embarrassing. Let’s talk football! #RaymondJameisStadium

  27. Eric Says:

It will become more and more obvious as the draft approaches and Mariota drops out of the top ten.

Remember Bridgewater was the consensus number one at this point last year, until the real NFL people started looking at it.

All those Oregon quarterbacks put up big numbers. Means nothing to the real NFL scouts.

  28. gatrbuc17 Says:

    TBBF
I have been with you the whole way. I will support the team no matter who they take. That is what being a fan is all about. I am not sold on either but lean towards Mariota because he is a Sound Man besides being a QB.

I should be Jameis then It would all be forgiven

  32. BrooklynBucsFan Says:

The map is from Tallahassee to Tampa… Who could they possibly be talking about?

  33. monk Says:

Check out the “head”. Winston dissed his teammates and the coach. He’s immature and is a project. Mariota is level headed and I believe easily developed. He’s smart and has all the tools. I don’t look forward to all the crap about development, mentoring and potential with Winston. Draft Mariota.

  34. rayjay1122 Says:

Regardless of which QB we pick if that is the direction we go, that rookie should sit and learn the ropes in the NFL. That being said, we need to choose the one who is not a head case. Winston will not have a long successful career and is grossly overrated IMO. If we draft Winston it is going to be really tough for me to support him and continue supporting the Bucs. Even if he does get his head on straight, he needs to play much better in the first half of games. The heroic come from behind crap is not going to equate to wins at the next level. I am not saying that Mariota I’d the answer either but at least he is a safer bet to not miss seasons due to suspension or legal issues. I do not have a personal grudge against Winston nor do I wish him to fail but he is a much bigger risk. Can we afford to miss with the first pick in the draft? Maybe with an actual NFL OC and some improved OL play, we can at least be average with MG or JM until the rookie is ready to take the helm. I can be patient if there is light at the end of the tunnel but if we draft a bust as we usually do with first round QBs then I just may lose the little sanity I have remaining. Lol.

  35. gatrbuc17 Says:

I could not POSSIBLY care LESS about the six or so “Incidents”

  36. Tampabaybucfan Says:

No risktaking with this pick please……If there isn’ complete agreement between the Glazers, Lovie, Licht & Koetter…..then trade down and let someone else take that risk.
We need a QB badly…but we also need several other players….and many will be slam dunks compared to some of our less worthy 1st & 2nd round picks….

  37. Rrsrq Says:

Can April 30, 2015 get here fast enough, we Bucs fans have been waiting for that day since playing the Falcons on Thursday night. That way all the JBF posters can start the fire Lovie campaign for drafting Jameis and then we can let them back on the bandwagon as Winston leads us to the playoffs as all is forgiven.

  38. port richey george Says:

Joe would be content with Marcus Mariota and would be OK with sitting him for a season so he can learn an NFL offense.

you don’t draft the number 1 overall pick and have him sit for a year. better to trade the pick than do that.

mariota will fall in the draft. just like your boy johnny football did last year.
jameis Winston is a pro style offense plug and play starter. he will start from day one.

  39. Eric Says:

Maybe he has made some great decisions that you don’t even know about?

Nahhhhhhhhh obviously an unbiased, objective, and complete picture of Jameis as has been produced by the NYT and BSPN.

The Bucs shouldn’t even look at the guy, talk to people who know him, meet with him, work him out. Just take Mariota and accept as gospel what the media sez about the guy.

Forget he watches three hours of film after practice and works harder than anyone on the team, has a burning desire to win and be the best, and is a good student as a dual sport athlete.

The media knows it all and their never wrong. Put the future of the franchise in their hands…….

  42. StPeteBucsFan Says:

OK guys love ya all but we could settle down a bit. It’s not Joe jerking our chains. We are jerking our own chains. LOL

Anybody who claims they KNOW the choice already is certainly lacking in credibility.

Anybody who claims to know WHO the choice should be is merely expressing an opinion and that is Joe as well as us.

Now let’s all take a deep breath and knock off the hyperbole.

Joe is not going to lose any clicks to speak of if he keeps promoting Jameis.
Despite what anybody thinks of their football opinions the two Joes have scoreboard on the clicks and their website. They’re obviously doing quite well.

And 87..luv ya dude but the ticket sales of the Bucs are not going to be effected dramatically if we choose Jameis over Marcus or vice versa. BOTH of the players have major pluses and minuses.

We need a QB! There are more than two potential choices. I concede that given our draft position it’s nice that we could have either of these two choices but there ARE other options.

I will say this. If Mike Glennon cannot beat out Josh McCown next year then move on and try any number of different QB’s.

I smile when I think of 27 Heisman QB’s selected since 1950 and only FOUR have enjoyed true success. Imagine the arguments at the bars, before blogs, about whether to take that Heisman and all the people shouting stuff like…
The ONLY selection to make is Johnny Manziel…oh we did read that already.

The ONLY selection to make is RGIII….Cam Newton…Sam Bradford…Tim Tebow..Troy Smith…Matt Leinert…Jason White…Carson Palmer…ding ding ding at last a winner!! Let’s get back to the ONLY player to select in 2001 since a QB is essential Eric Crouch…

The ONLY player to draft WAS Chris Weinke…Danny Weurfel…Charlie Ward
Gina Torreta…are you guys not getting a little nervous about the Heisman curse?

Bottom line…there is no ONLY player to take. IMHO we’ve already gotten the most important piece in Koettler. The best QB draft in the world would have been useless last year with Arroyo. I’m content to let Koettler decide whom he feels comfortable with at QB. I think Koettler had some leverage and Lovie will give him a lot of power.

In fact I have been reading this site everyday for quite awhile and now am just posting because I cannot take all this crazy Mariota talk. Why can’t you people see that he has this great completion % because everyone is wide open because that offensive is going at warp speed and the defense is lost?

  45. rayjay1122 Says:

    @StPeteBucsFan

Well said on your last post. Good points IMO.

  46. mark2001 Says:

Fair enough Joe…just wonder what Lovie and Licht thinks…. Have said all along the only question about Winston being the best guy is his character/maturity if you will. The question is, are Lovie and Licht ready to put their careers in the hands of Mariota or Winston….no neutral outcome on this one, unless they both are similarly successful.

So tired of seeing our Bucs go down in flames giving up forth quarter scores, and my Redbirds did the same thing when one last series stop could have clinched a victory…hope for better the rest of 2015 for both.

Amendola throws a perfect spiral for a tying TD.

I still do not understand why NFL teams don’t make more use of QB’s who have athletic skills but are not up to standards as a QB.

What would happen if the Bucs signed Tim Tebow and Koetter created a new position for him called T back. The Tebow version of an H back. Timmy could line up all over the field except NEVER under center. He’d be fine at TE…could even go out wide occasionally and even serve as a decoy blocking back in the backfield and of course is the quintessential wildcat.

Seriously. Tebow does not have an NFL quality arm for QB. But his arm is as good as Eric Amendolas!!! A truly creative mind could exploit Tebow’s variety of athletic skills.

Anybody know if Tebow simply refuses to play any position but QB?

I worked in Tennessee in the 80’s with a guy from Lakeland and whenever I btchd about the rotten Bengals he’d tell me to put a sock in it. He was a Bucs fan and he knew REAL suffering!

  85. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @rayjay22

Oh….don’t feel sorry for me….I love being a Buc fan even with all the losing….builds character….I have my Yankees to balance out the W-L.
’79 was a good year….Sat at the Sombrero….watched the LA Rams beat us 9-0 in the rainy NFC Championship….

  86. Soggy Says:

@87ForJameisNoMariota, Thanks I was born and raised there 30 years, been here and bucs fan sense 98 in time for the superbowl man that was sweet..

  87. 87ForJameisNoMariota Says:

TBBF…Same as me. I have my Noles and Red Sox to lift me up most of the time.

I think I’m a bigger Buc fan than Noles and Sox though.

  88. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    TBBF

The stinkin Yankees? Say it ain’t so Joe! You now have another alternative.
The most professionally run sports organization is right here in Tampa.!!!

The Lightning are awesome this year and a lot of fun to watch. I’m hoping the Bucs can capture the same kind of magic.

  89. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @loggedontosay

I have posted the results of that poll countless times and have never been corrected or contradicted by Joe….

Yes……it is only a poll that was there for one day and Joe is welcome to do a tracking poll like his Lovie poll if he wishes….

  90. 87ForJameisNoMariota Says:

Soggy…I left the Pats behind in 87 when I moved to Florida and never looked back. I had about 2 Pats t-shirts and a hat back then.

The Pats kind of sucked back then too…so I figured what the hell. Plus I was new to football and knew nothing about the Bucs history. So essentially I went into becoming a Bucs fan with a blindfold on.

  91. Soggy Says:

Correction I meant moved here and a bucs fan sense 89.. anyways the super bowl was sweet, detroit has never been there..

  92. rayjay1122 Says:

Yes. Losing does build character. That is why Tampa is full of “characters”. LOL. Seriously though, if we always won, then winning would become so routine, that it would lose its luster. We have the Superbowl win and I will never forget Ronde running that interception back to seal the NFC championship. That was good times.

  93. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Wow. Moving the ball and everything and Flacco has a huge brain cramp.

He didn’t have to throw into double coverage for the home run!!! Damn.

  94. 87ForJameisNoMariota Says:

I still cry when I watch the SB DVD…so yah it means something to me.

  95. Soggy Says:

@87ForJameisNoMariota, Ya I know what you mean, My lions love went down alot after the move but I must admit I was rooting good for the lions this year after the bad year we have had..

  96. rayjay1122 Says:

I am really going to be torn if the NFC championship is between Dallas and Seattle. I lived in each city about the same length of time but regardless of what big dog says about allegiance to the teams where you live, I never put them before the Bucs.

  97. Mcruzer Says:

St. Pete Bucs Fan, I hear you. Joe keeps saying he has never seen a left tackle or guard score an 80 yard TD, but you do have to wonder how many arm chair QB’s on this message board could chuck a football 40 yards for a TD when we have a solid 10 seconds like Flacco has had tonight. While i do think we should draft a QB, the rest of our draft…..

  98. MTM Says:

Nice article Joe (s) but the Glazers are not going to draft Winston. I don’t care if Dunn, Brooks, Weike, Ward and the almighty Trent Dilfer pine for Winston it ain’t going to happen.

Even if Mariota needs some time to adjust to ridiculously simple and slow pro style offense’s that are run in the NFL. Mariota will have to adjust to waiting before he can runs plays. In case the defense isn’t ready or needs time to substitute players. The NFL is soooo complex. Maybe Chucky can work with Mariota in the off season and get him up to speed.

  99. The Real Drew Says:

I’m starting to think Winston should be the pick. I was full blown Mariotta to begin with and I still think he would be a good pick. I don’t think Mariotta will be a bust or just a system QB. But, Winston just seems to be more capable of reading defenses and throwing receivers open. I don’t think we can go wrong either way, but Mariotta will take more time to develop as a pro.

  100. rayjay1122 Says:

    ,@Soggy

Sorry about the Lions. That reversed pads interference was crap. I have family in Plymouth, so I feel for the long history of losing up there.

  101. Soggy Says:

X-bucs move on to the next level..

  102. 87ForJameisNoMariota Says:

I think after the combine..Winston will be our pick..

  103. finishers Says:

Mariota will stay in college,if Oregon blows the championship game!

  104. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Predictions anybody? Seattle 28 Carolina 17

  105. Soggy Says:

@rayjay1122, Thanks, I will never miss the weather there..At least this time of year..lol

  106. rayjay1122 Says:

My auto spell on my phone is truly amazing. I have no idea how it replaces what I type with stuff that makes no sense. Lol. Damn Patriots. OK well now I am ready to watch the Seattle spank the stinking Panthers… I hope.

  107. rayjay1122 Says:

    Seattle 38 Panthers 17.

  108. StPeteBucsFan Says:

WOW! Have you guys seen this? This will toss some interesting fuel into the Marcus-Jameis debate.

    http://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/ncaafb/oregons-carrington-ford-benched-after-positive-drug-tests/ar-AA80vBv

DALLAS (AP) — Oregon was forced to bench two players because of failed drug tests days before the team competes in the first College Football Playoff title game, coach Mark Helfrich said Saturday, detailing the latest hit to a roster already depleted by injuries.

Wide receiver Darren Carrington and running back Ayele Forde did not travel with Oregon for Monday’s national championship game against Ohio State after each failed NCAA-mandated drug tests. Carrington tested positive for marijuana; the results of Forde’s test weren’t disclosed.

Helfrich insisted the team remained focused.

“Unfortunately, we’ve been tested in the realm of guys not being available for whatever reason all season long,” Helfrich said. “And our guys have stepped up.”

The loss of Carrington is particularly difficult for the Ducks, who are already short at receiver for Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Marcus Mariota.

The Ducks have also been playing for the last four games without star tight end Pharoah Brown, who went down with a season-ending leg injury against Utah.

And before the season started, junior receiver Bralon Addison tore a ligament in his left knee. Although Addison said Saturday at the team’s media availability in Dallas that he could play in the championship game, Oregon’s coaches don’t want to burn his redshirt year.

  109. rayjay1122 Says:

John Lynch…sweet. I really hope he gets in the HOF. He was the man in his hay day before the rules quit allowing bone crushing hits.

  110. BFFL Says:

I hope Lovie/Licht draft Mariota and implement the Oregon zone read. That scheme is damn near impossible to stop with the right players.

  111. finishers Says:

    20-17 Panthers Win

  112. rayjay1122 Says:

Interesting article about the Ducks players. If Mariota still shines without them maybe it could change some perspectives. It is too bad, and this is just my personal opinion and I am not trying to start any debates, but I will never understand why marijuana is so evil in our society? I have been high and drunk in my lifetime and again it is just my opinion, I feel that alcohol is far worse. My wife read some interesting stats in Colorado since the legalization of marijuana for recreational use, the state has had I believe she said over 40 million in tax revenue and violent crime has decreased. Again this is just my opinion and I respect those who are against it as long as they are not getting drunk all of the time. That would be hypocrisy in my view.

  113. rayjay1122 Says:

Nice defense. Newton may not survive this game.

  114. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @rayjay

+1 here. I share your experience. I learned to toke in a guard tower in Vietnam in 1968 and so my experience probably covers more years than many of you have even lived..

Completely agree about which drug is worse…alcohol or weed.

Driving tests have also shown that alcohol impairs driving far more than weed and just as dangerous as alcohol…texting and driving.

NOTHING scares me more than looking in my rear view mirror and watching some chick look down as she texts away.

  115. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Serious question. When a dude like the Panther punt returner has long golden locks flowing from his helmet is it against the rules to grab it during a tackle?

  116. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Speaking for Pablo

“Pablo didn’t know that Ducks smoked marijuana” If Pablo knew that he would have ordered Peking Duck more often”

  117. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    St. Pete

    Hair is fair game!!!

  118. Cascade Says:

    Jameis Watch: off.

  119. Soggy Says:

@StPeteBucsFan, Yes horse collar flags have been picked up because of the hair tackle..lol

  120. rayjay1122 Says:

    @StPeteBucsFan

Right on. Thanks for your service. I am an Army veteran myself. 92-97 and pulled plenty of guard duty in Bosnia. Lol. And for anyone against toking, no I do not currently smoke MJ but if it were legal I would.

  121. rayjay1122 Says:

    @Tampabaybucfan

    That Pablo comment was hilarious.

  122. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Airforce 64-68……MacDill AFB…..tough duty…..lived on Davis Island surrounded by nurses for 4 years!!!

  123. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @rayjay

Back at you for your service. Yeah I can’t imagine Bosnia was too exciting.

i’m like you. Don’t use weed to much anymore but as Morgan Freeman said recently in an interview…still drink Morgan…oh no too rough on the system…do any coke…no too old for that can’t do drugs…and so Morgan have you given up smoking MJ….Oh no I’ll never give up Mary Jane completely. She’s a life long affair.

  124. Danati74 Says:

Do you want poor mans Andrew Luck, or poor mans RG3?

  125. StPeteBucsFan Says:

You still served TBBF and so good on you. My service wasn’t all bad either.
I spent a lot of time in Thailand as well as Vietnam…I was 20…I behaved like Jameis but I wasn’t a star athlete. That’ll give the Jameis lovers some ammo to hurl at me, LOL.

  126. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I think we’re looking at our competition for next year. As much as I hate the stinking Panthers I must confess they’re beginning to earn my respect in these playoffs. Fumble’s gonna hurt but they seem to be hanging with Seattle.

I’m waiting until the 2nd Half and crunch time to see how Cam does.

  127. StPeteBucsFan Says:

LMAO…How’s that for jinx. I no sooner give the Panthers props and they give up the TD on Stewart’s fumble. I still gotta say the Panthers probably were the best team in our division. They are set at QB and MLB and so they’re going to be competitive again next year.

  128. 87ForJameisNoMariota Says:

Ha ha ha…most of us behaved like Jameis when we were 20 years old. Some of us did more stupid things than the crab legs, and BB gun thingy…

    Me for one.

  129. ndog Says:

I hope you Mariota lovers are watching these games today. The difference between the real qbs and these read option guys is night and day. I mean just in the first quarter you can see the good defenses, which you play in the playoffs just don’t let that crap work. Also ask yourself this how many qbs have the Eagles been through in the past two years under Chip Kelly? So let’s say we draft Mariota and run read option. What happens when he goes down, Josh McKnown comes in and runs read option?

  130. Soggy Says:

I took a boat for a test ride, It was not mine=Felony

  131. rayjay1122 Says:

    @TBBF
    @StPete

No, Bosnia was not very fun. It was like being in prison except the inmates were all armed. Lol. Could not even have a beer and had to be in full battle rattle just to go from the tent to the outhouse. Davis island and nurses? Now that sounds like torture. Hehe.

  132. foghead407 Says:

I would love winston. Just dont know if lovie will draft him. Hope so

  133. foghead407 Says:

    I really hope.we draft him

  134. WINdycitybuc Says:

Wasn’t this the same blog pining for the Bucs to draft Manziel? People whose actions have consequences chose an Offensive Rookie of the Year candidate, so why do people give any amount of credence to what is posted by those without consequence?! The point here is to get you excited and piss you off at the same time. Nothing more, nothing less. Think for yourself (if you are capable).

  135. kaput Says:

Is Mariota functionally any better than RG3? If he is, I don’t see it.

Both great pure athletes, both played at an incredibly high level in college (and won Heisman’s) and both played in systems that aren’t anything like the NFL game. What Oregon does isn’t found anywhere in the NFL, not even in Philly.

Has there been a quarterback make the transition from an up-tempo spread-option college offense to become a great NFL signal caller? I can’t think of a single one. If so, who?

I don’t like Winston’s character, but his skill set is much closer to NFL ready than that of Mariota.

We need a franchise quarterback in the worst way. Look at the teams left – Brady, Luck, Manning, Newton, Wilson, Romo, Rodgers and Flacco (just lost). Teams without franchise quarterbacks don’t play deep into the playoffs.

  136. Erik with Clean Athletics Says:

Ahh, the daily ‘Jameis Crime Watch’…. Did he do anything stupid today? It’s only a matter of time, I’m sure. Lol, the Glazers will NEVER pick this clown. Get over it. Marriota is our guy. Winston would be a shameful and embarrassing ‘face of the franchise’, thus it’s not happening.

  137. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    ndog

I get your post after watching Brady and Flacco. They are not statues and have some mobility but watching Wilson and of course Cam makes me think exactly of Mariota.

Our formula is on the screen tonight. Let’s see how it holds up against what will probably be the toughest competition in our division next year.

Lovie’s already pointed out his admiration of the Seattle formula. Great mobile QB who DOES run a lot but because he’s got brains knows when to run and how to get down WITHOUT getting hurt. Mariota is just as smart as Wilson.

  138. foghead407 Says:

Winston isnt a poor mans andrew luck

  139. 87ForJameisNoMariota Says:

Erik…Winston is going to sell a shytload of tickets….when the Bucs draft him.

Probably not to you, but I have 4 season tickets waiting to be bought if I hear that name on draft day.

You can add about 20,000 FSU fans to my 4 tickets. The Glazer WILL draft him.

  140. StPeteBucsFan Says:

OMG was that just a read option run by Wilson with the handoff to Lynch?

Can’t have any of that this is the freaking NFL dontcha know.

  141. ndog Says:

Erik fans like you are shameful and embarrassing to us real fans who actually know what we are talking about. Please tell me the last time Jameis was arrested. In fact the last one to break the law between the two was Mariota for speeding. No one is perfect and if you do any research you would not make comments like the uninformed one you just posted.

  142. Soggy Says:

    That was sweet nice TD

  143. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Damn. Right now if I had my pick I’d probably stick with Aaron Rodgers as my preferred QB but Wilson is something. What a freaking pass!!!

  144. ndog Says:

Smart does not always equal good. Being able to make touch throws and fire the ball on time are just as important and Wilson can do that, not convinced Mariota can. I know Winston can.

  145. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Two drops so far for Cam. His receivers are not helping him one bit. Given all that’s going on I gotta say Newton is playing well.

  146. StPeteBucsFan Says:

That’s cool for me to see. Chancellor one of Seattle’s most feared hitters helps Jonathan Stewart up after a tackle. I told the story of Luck who tells guys who nail him with good sacks…”Great hit”….he shocks them with compliments.

Gawd I miss sportsmanship, but then I’m a dinosaur.

  147. Eric Says:

Panthers never should have drafted Newton. He stole a lap top in college…and some kind of gambling thing with his dad.

Unfounded, but that doesn’t matter there was an accusation.

  148. Eric Says:

And then when the police were closing in he threw the lap top out his dorm window!

That’s actually two felonies. Grand theft and destruction of evidence.

Can’t draft a guy like that.

  149. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Just rub it in. Joe favorite exBuc castoff Michael Bennett is having a great game. We’ve had no pass rush since he left.

  150. BFFL Says:

    @kaput

Philly absolutely runs the zone read which is not to be confused with the read option play. The 49ers with Kaepernick or Redskins with RGIII did not run the zone read but did use read option plays. The zone read in philly uses more passing as opposed to QB runs but the formations, WR/TE routes and play philosophies are the same thing Oregon does. Chip would love to run the QB more out of the zone read but does not have the right QB. If Sanchez can move the ball then you know this scheme can work in the NFL. Imagine how well it will work with Mariota.

  151. LUVMYBUCS Says:

SIDE NOTE: For those of you that believe.. A Safety, can no longer impose their will. PLEASE go back in watch the hit Kam Chancellor just put on Carolina’s fullback Tolbert.

Wait just go back., and watch the whole freaking game.

This KID is ALL FREAKIN’ WORLD

  152. rayjay1122 Says:

I am glad it is not my job to pick in this draft. I do not know what is best. Winston, Mariota or trade back and load up on picks and if someone on our radar slips we still get a difference maker. Since neither rookie QB is a slam dunk and we need a QB, this is a tough decision. This will be an even more interesting off season than last year’s for sure holding the 1st pick. I am not too concerned about Winston’ s past behavior. 20 year Old guys do stupid things. I do not know how I survived my 20s. I am more concerned about his abilities on the field. I will be honest. I have not been able to watch a lot of his games, but the few I did see, I was not blown away. I also have not seen too much of Mariota and I do understand the whole system QB not translating to the NFL. What a bunch of rambling just to say i do not know what the hell is best. Lol

  153. Soggy Says:

@rayjay1122, Ya, I Really feel about the same, L&L need to get it right or they will never live it down, The draft can’t get here fast enough for me so we can stop all the debate’s, It’s fun but going to get old real fast..

  154. Erik with Clean Athletics Says:

If I’m so ignorant, and Winston hasn’t committed a crime, tell me why he would destroy the video tape that could have proved his innocence?!?? You guys are stupid. He raped that girl. It might not have been some violent rape scenario, but she was hammered drunk and they took advantage of her disoriented state and banged her. Yea, u guys are right… He’s got excellent character and he’d be a great face of the franchise and role model… Get over him. We will NEVER draft a guy like that. Guaranteed.

  155. rayjay1122 Says:

    @soggy

Yes. The debates, mock drafts and speculation is going to get old. The Bucs are at least going to get a lot of attention by the National media this off season though. I am going to try to enjoy it though since it is rare to have the 1st pick and hopefully we won’t be in this position again anytime soon.

  156. Soggy Says:

@rayjay1122, Thats true, I was more talking about the rude kind of debating that goes on in here sometimes, I should of made that clear before..The other stuff is great..

  157. Soggy Says:

I really did not think the panthers would have a chance in this game and it looking like they might

  158. rayjay1122 Says:

    @soggy

I understand. Yeah, there is plenty of rude and degrading comments on this subject. It is easy to be an ass hiding behind a keyboard but if more people would respect one another and realize we are all Bucs fans as well as having other things possibly in common, maybe there could be a little less hate. Sharing opinions that differ can be done in a civil manner but some people like to hate. Woo hoo go Seahawks!

  159. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Glazers would be better off with the 2nd pick….that way they wouldn’t have a choice….when you have a choice the possibility of mistakes go way up…..when you have 2 QBs, you don’t have any….isn’t that what they say?

  160. rayjay1122 Says:

Lol. This article has had so many unrelated comments. Joe should create an open thread for each playoff day.

  161. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Let’s trade down with Tenn…..then trade down with the Jets……boatload of picks….maybe pick up Petty…

  162. Soggy Says:

@rayjay1122, I’ve been in a couple of those internet shootouts and it’s not worth it..lol

Theres the dagger ronde like pick six

  163. rayjay1122 Says:

    @ TBBF

You are right about not having the burden of screwing up and picking the wrong guy if we were at #2 but having #1 all the attention is fun. This Seahawks game is fun too. Yessss!!! Down with the Panthers.

  164. Dave Pear Says:

    @Eric,
You do know Cam Newton was never charged with stealing that lap top don’t you?
He completed some pre-trial diversion program and all charges were dropped. Also, a lot of people think he was kicked out of UF for that incident, but he was only suspended from the football team for a period of time.
The only reason he left UF was because Tebow announced his intention to return for his senior year. Then he bolted.

  165. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ rayjay22

“With the first pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, The Tampa Bay Buccaneers select………..!!!

    Yes….that is very exciting…

  166. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Cam Newton is my second most despised NFL person……#1 is Jerry Jones…..hopefully, Jones’ tears will freeze up on him tomorrow.

  167. SAMCRO Says:

If Mariota’s game can be closely compared to Wilson’s game and Winston’s game can be compared to Newton. Could this Seattle, Carolina game be somewhat indicative to what we can expect from Mariota and Winston in the future?

This game is Very entertaining, and it will be interesting to see Mariota square off to Winston in the future.

As much as I prefer Mariota at #1, if we do draft Winston instead, I will be OK with that. Although I think Winston will give me a few coronaries on the way. 🙂

  168. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ SAMCRO

As much as we like to try to compare players…..you just really can’t….different coaches….different teams….different personalities….some have similar skillsets but that’s about it.

As far as the coronaries…..more like a continual uneasiness with Winston…..like waiting for biopsy results….

  169. Soggy Says:

    @rayjay1122 Says:
    January 10th, 2015 at 9:12 pm
    Seattle 38 Panthers 17.
    ————————————–
    not a bad prediction..

  170. rayjay1122 Says:

I predicted Seattle 38 Panthers 17. The Panthers played tough. Today was a great football day.

  171. rayjay1122 Says:

    Calling it a night. Peace.

  172. Rex Says:

Eric, your first comment was dead on. I agree 100% with that. Oregons history of QBs have no QB that has been successful in an nfl offense. I’m glad some people can see the facts and not say what they want to believe in. Long story short, Winston is NFL ready, and Mariota is another RGIII/Newton. I couldn’t care less about false rape allegations or $6.00 crab legs. What matters is football. Lovie can help him with his off the field choices.

  173. HolyBuc Says:

Oregon hasn’t ever had a QB as talented as Mariota. Sometimes a system is beneficial to a player and sometimes the player is beneficial to the system. Jimbo has produced two recent 1st round picks lately and both have been busts.

  174. Andrew 1 Says:

people look at Mariota’s inflated numbers and automatically assume he is the best QB, but talent wise Winston IS better and is hands down the best QB in this draft. And no I dont have a bias one way or the other. Just an honest assessment.

  175. Andrew 1 Says:

Do the bucs have the testicular fortitude to pull the trigger though…

  176. Connor Says:

Well at least I got to watch some good football for once this weekend!

  177. Billy Buc N Brazil Says:

Hell will freeze over before the Bucs brass choose Leftwiints!!! Folks relax we are in the drivers seat for once with our bright new Shiny#1 stud!!! Thank the good Lord above for the ultimate tank job and the ever so brilliant Mr.Smith and his McClown!! I am certain one way or another we are receiving a blessed stroke of joy and pain from the Almighty Football Gods!!!

  178. Joe Says:

The question is do you have the nerve to stand up to the Big Dog with your strong convictions. I doubt it because he will bury you as usual..

Hey tough guy, already explained to Big Dog live on the air, to his face, in studio.

  179. Draft the Chip Kelly Bait Says:

I’m not sure which QB the Bucs will take. But with how torn I’ve been wondering which is the better choice, I’m glad we are #1 and not #2.

  180. Eric Says:

Winston hasn’t ever been charged with a crime either, that was my point….

  181. DallasBuc Says:

Winston is worth the risk. If you don’t have hope at the QB position you don’t have a chance at winning a championship. With Winston we could actually win games in spite of the abject failure that is Lovie Smith and little sidekick lapdog Licht. Take Winston, win football games, restore hope!

  182. Bucfan4life Says:

I’m confused about you guys complaining about some silly poll (how many actually responded because who the hell cares what a bunch of readers prefer) and why Joe continues to promote Jameis. Joe thinks Jameis is clearly the better pick and usually quotes experts that believe it too. So should L&L just poll you guys and make the pick based on the winner? Joe has well reasoned thoughts for having Winston rated higher than Mariota. Watch him tomorrow night. He will throw multiple screens at the line of scrimmage and QB runs over and over. He will also be slightly off line when he throws it more than 5 yards (ala Josh Freeman). Mariota is going to continue to fall in mock drafts over time. By the time April rolls around I predict that Mariota will not even be projected to go in the top 10.

  183. Bob in Valrico Says:

combine and individual workouts will probably decide if Marriota can make
all the throws. But winstons backwards fumble was very reminiscent of some
of Mccowns terrible turnovers. It made me wonder if a good NFL defense would
shatter winstons poise. I have seen it happen to Brady, peyton,Rogers and Brees.
Marriotta’s escapabilty is an X factor that could help him a lot. The big Question is who has the football smarts to be a success and handle the defensive pressure. Neither has experienced it so let the homework begin.
But the Russell Wilson skillset is one I think is the future.
Jason Licht said his quarterback needs to eat in sleep football.Marriotta
seems to be very much like Wilson in that respect.

tell me why he would destroy the video tape that could have proved his innocence?!??

As 87 and other Jameis lovers can testify I’m hardly a Jameis supporter. But I do agree with his supporters that any ONE of these events taken by themselves can be explained away.

The INSTANT any ADULT became aware of that cellphone video they would have IMMEDIATELY said destroy it. It couldn’t possible prove his innocence because she would have claimed it was just a snippet of that night’s activity.

Meanwhile even if the tape was her moaning in pleasure at Jameis manhood and made it look like consensual sex imagine if it showed up on TMZ and unedited on the internet. Talk about a PR disaster. Even if the girl recanted and said it was consensual that tape on the internet would have been disastrous for Jameis just ahead of the draft.

Destroying the video may have been the only ADULT thing Jameis and his buds have done in this entire affair.

It’s just such a big investment, the Heisman curse…4 out of 27 successful!!
Each side here presenting the flaws of each QB have scared the beejesus out of me. Again we are now reduced to hoping Koetter is the QB guru and creative OC his record indicates and trust the judgment of L&L and Koetter.

Saying Winston is worth the risk is kinda idiotic. Mariota is also worth the risk. And his risk vs reward is way better. SMH. Winston would be a shameful and embarrassing face of the franchise and thus it will NEVER happen. The Glazers need to repair the Bucs image in the community, not tarnish it further.

  186. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

” thus it will NEVER happen”

People who use hypotheticals as absolutes are humorous.

Jameis will be the number one pick.

Jamies will win the Super Bowl in Tampa.

See, anyone can do that. It doesn’t make it actually true.

The Bucs were winning a Super Bowl with non boy scouts in Michael Pittman and Warren Sapp, and everyone was cheering. Winning is what will repair their image in the community.

    L&WD

BINGO!!! I’ve been trying for the last two days to point out there is no “ONLY CHOICE”.

I accept the criticism of my long pieces. If I was as talented as L&WD I could have condensed a lot of it into his single sentence.

People who use hypotheticals as absolutes are humorous.

That wasn’t directed at you Eric but rather to the entire group who are absolutists.

  188. Gt40bear Says:

Joe, the same football gods who have screwed the Bucs at every opportunity save once? I’m to the point I really don’t care which they pick as long as it’s the RIGHT one. Each has his red flags. I just hope, if they pick Winston, Publix or Mons doesn’t come back to bite us. Never will like drafting a young underclassman QB…no matter who it is.

Never will like drafting a young underclassman QB…no matter who it is.

That is an excellent point GT.

  190. DallasBuc Says:

Erik with Clean Sht that hauks it on a Bucs website is kinda idiotic. Calling a different opinion than yours idiotic is also kinda idiotic. Depending on your own opinion of perceived risk determines whether or not you agree that it is a risk worth taking. Clearly you disagree. That alone doesn’t make you an idiot but the name calling kinda does. I suspect the Glazers would take a winner if it meant some immature growing pains from the young man. Professing to know what they are thinking and how they would act could also be perceived as idiot Erik with Clean Sht to hauk on a Bucs website.

  191. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    @StPete.

Thanks, I think. 🙂 I think some people forgot this place is all opinions, Including Los Joses.

For the record, of course I am happy that Jameis is a Nole, but, I never, ever looked at guys like Ponder or EJ as NFL starters, and thought their draft spots were mistakes. Ponder’s injuries, especially his elbow, robbed him of whatever borderline physical ability that he possessed. Smart guy though. And, EJ has smarts and the physical tools but lacks the ability to throw a guy open and put it in small windows. EJ can get it there if the guy is ALREADY open. That’s the big difference between good ones and great ones. Jameis has that.

  192. Jack Says:

How about a proven QB? Trade for Atlanta’s QB.

  193. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Winston = Leaf
    Mariota = Manning

Read up on the 1998 draft.
