Dirk Koetter And The Red Zone

The Bucs offense was miserable last season. Joe knows that. You know that.
But believe it or not, despite being led (mostly) by turnover-prone Josh McCown and guided by ill-suited Marcus Arroyo (yes, he’s still with the Bucs), the Bucs improved in their red zone offense over 2013.
No, really.
In 2013, the Bucs under then-commander Greg Schiano had a 51.43 scoring percentage in the red zone. This season, the Bucs had a 53.85 percentage, good enough to rank in the top half of NFL team at No. 14, per TeamRankings.com.
What does this have to do with new Bucs offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter?
Well, the Dixie Chicks, who he coached last season, finished fifth in the NFL in red zone scoring at 61.36 percent. This was done without Julio Jones much of the season, with an aging Roddy White missing two games, with virtually no running game, and with an injury-riddled offensive line that saw Gabe Carimi (remember him?) start seven games.

I’ll take just about anyone at OC that has done it before compared to last years Arroyo.
I also think it’s a plus to still have Arroyo on staff.

I don’t think Arroyo should retained. He may be a QB coach, but it doesn’t usually work out when a guy is demoted and his replacement is brought in from outside. Also, Arroyo is a Tedford guy, unless there’s a history with Koetter and Arroyo I’m not aware of, I’m sure Koetter would like to bring in a qb coach he’s comfortable teaching his system.

I am sure that Koetter will/is evaluating each and every coach in his empire and will do what any good new leader would do, keep the ones you think you want and terminate the ones you don’t want.
If you stop and think about what we do have and what we need all we “need ” is a great QB, servicable OL, and a plan. Oh and Lovie to keep his fingers out of it.

why are we better this year in the redzone than last? greg schiano thought glennon was the second coming of tom brady and couldn’t resist making this rookie throw the ball and unlike the rest of us that are not in denial he didn’t realize he played like a rookie afraid to take chances with the ball. mike Sullivans offense was pathetic on tape and in the stat sheets

Aroyo wasn’t really demoted and no one should be surprised if he is retained. He was in an impossible situation.

Most people in the know say Lovie is a “hands off” guy with is coordinators, so why do I keep seeing so many people accuse him of meddling in the offense. From what I could find, he never has, which means there are people here just waiting to jump on Lovie for anything. What’s next, “Lovie sucks because his hat is more red than the others?” Sh*t sakes guys, lay off the haterade!

It’s not the red zone % that I care about…..it’s how many times we get there….the difference between last year/this year is minimal
Koetter will bring in his own assistants…give it some time..

You are soooooo off the mark. 1. The percentage difference is about 1.5%…which equals maybe a field goal difference. 2. Mike Evans.
This has nothing to do with Schiano or Glennon.

Why is the total points less this year (277) when 2013 had (288) despite playing a much harder schedule ( especially defenses ). Last year was the worse offense I have ever seen. And I was 1 of 30,000 that gave Bryon Leftwich a standing Ovation when the Bucs finally got their 1st first down late in third quarter in 2009!

Arroyo=zero experience in nfl.
Koetter=years of experience in nfl south.
Koetter= keep glennon get rid of mccown(or major pay cut)
Koetter= trade down in the draft.

Why do you keep saying he was without Julio Jones most of the season? He started 15 of 16 games and caught a career high 104 passes.

Snook your right; he missed one game but he did play hurt a lot this year. I had him in fantasy and he had a few stretches with 50-60 yd days, which is unlike Julio when healthy.
I think everyone will like this hire once they see how he can use our assets best and put guys in the right spots for success. We need a bill walsh type magic to fix our OL; not sure Warhop can do this but maybe Koetter can help. I can see the bandwagon being full by week 8 for all the haters not liking this OC pick.

8 games lost by 6 points or less
4 of those by 3 points or less
How many of these games were we winning in the 4th quarter, only to lose?
Fix the PASS RUSH NOW! Leonard Williams makes as much sense if not more as drafting a QB with that 1st overall. O line and Petty or Hundley can follow….

Your whole argument supports drafting a QB. Even just average QB play this year would have resulted in far more wins. Leonard Williams won’t score us more points. Drafting a pass rusher and keeping a turnover prone QB is a recipe for disaster, no thank you. Take a solid look at the Texans, they have the best pass rusher in the universe and they didn’t even make the playoffs. Draft a QB and don’t look back.

If you’re referring to Clowney, I called him a bust before he even played his last 5 games for SC before declaring (Im a Gamecock, I followed him closely and know what I saw).
Btw, I didnt say “KEEP” a turnover prone QB! Theres more than 2 in this draft!
Your “WHOLE ARGUMENT” is reminiscent of how a sick gambler goes into his approach with “never looking back”.
I DO NOT want gambler mentality with this calculation!!! It must be precise and a SLAM DUNK HOME RUN!!!
Both QB’s might not work out (look at the history of Heisman winning QB’s). But pass rush is the QB Killer! And theres no denying we need to get GMC some help.
And what if he goes down to injury again? Are we going to rely on Bowers? HAH!

Last I checked Clowney wasn’t the best at anything. Why on Earth would I be talking about that bum? Who I was referring to as the greatest pass rusher in the universe is J.J. Watt. Texans are the perfect example as to what I’m talking about, you can have the best defensive player of this generation and the best pass rusher in Watt, but if you don’t have a quarterback you won’t be going anywhere.
Take a look at all the teams still playing in the playoffs and the common thing amongst them is that they all have great quarterbacks.
I have no clue what you are talking about when referring to me as a gambler. But drafting a pass rusher is never a sure thing either, there have been just as many, if not more busts with drafting pass rushers high in the draft than drafting a quarterback. It is never a sure thing with pass rushers either.
So you say there are more than 2 QBs in this draft? I would have to completely argue against that logic. This is one of the worst quarterback draft classes in recent years, outside of Winston and Mariota there is a massive drop off in terms of talent at the quarterback position.
You can find pass rushers in free agency year after year. Also, there are plenty of pass rushers in this draft, Leonard Williams isn’t the only one either. You can hit on defensive lineman all over the draft and undrafted free agents. But, you will never see a franchise quarter back in free agency. You absolutely have to draft your franchise quarterback, and outside of Mariota and Winston there clearly aren’t any in this draft.

I almost pointed out JJ Watt too in case you were talking about him instead….but he wasnt doubled or even tripled that much this year…so forgive me. And point taken, pass rushers arent a sure thing either (ex: Clayborn/Bowers)
I completely agree with the poor QB class we have this draft. But disagree with you on the drop off between talent at QB…..Ive been pointing out Petty here for months, and I could be wrong, just as you and everyone else on Winston and Mariota. The NFL level reveals all flaws and you either have “it” and correct them (usually with gifted or God given talent) or you dont….and then theres that “in between” level where you hang around. Thats what I see with Winston and Mariota. But in Leonard Williams, I see that “IT” factor! Barring injury, he’ll be a star.

53.85% TD percentage is middle of the pack but I bet the Bucs rank for overall scoring in the redzone has to be in the bottom 5 or so given how many times McNown coughed up the ball via turnover in the redzone last season and that is one stat we can not hang on Marcus Arroyo as he did not throw the picks…. Koetter should help, heck he can not hurt but lets fall back on Winston Wolf’s advice from Pulp Fiction and not get too overboard with our Bucs O until we see exactly who the Bucs draft this spring and find out who will be qb and filling the trenches……
