Rex Ryan Could Muddle Dirk Koetter Shot

NFL Network is buzzing this afternoon with word that Rex Ryan will get a second interview for the Falcons’ head coaching job.
Are their enough feet in Atlanta to entice Ryan? Regardless, this doesn’t smell like good news for the Bucs.
Tampa Bay doesn’t need a defensive wizard like Ryan in the NFC South. That’s a dangerous matchup for a rookie quarterback. And Joe’s on his knees begging the football gods for a rookie quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick.
But more important, a Ryan hire in Atlanta — very likely, given that owner Arthur Blank want sizzle and buzz from his team as they enter a brand new stadium — could mean Falcons offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter could stay put and continue calling plays for Atlanta.
Ryan’s a defense-first guy through and through, and why would he want to mess with a good Atlanta offense?
Remember, Koetter got permission to interview with the Bucs and other teams for their offensive coordinator gigs, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the Falcons already signed away the rights to Koetter.
Joe suspects Koetter would be elated to keep working with Matt Ryan and friends. That’s a pretty sweet gig.

I enjoy the femininity and beauty of a gorgeous woman with cute well kept feet. As long as you aren’t a creep and loser about it, nothing wrong with a little foot fetish. So on that front, leave Rex alone! LOL. As far as him coaching the pigeons? Bring it. He is overrated, just like his brother.

That scares the crap out of me. Rex is a GREAT defensive coach and we already know that the Falcons have a great receiving corps. That could turn the NFC South upside down for years to come. If Blank brings in Rex, keeps Koetter and follows Ryan’s principles of toughness, run the ball and great defense, then we got our hands full. Rex couldn’t find a QB in NY and that was the thing that held him back.
In Atlanta they already have Ryan and their great receivers. Watch out.

Great we need to strengthen the division. Strength can only be gained through elevated competition. Screw Koetter, Rob Chudzinski’s the better play anyway.

rex made built his reputation on darelle revis’ ability to blow up the gameplans of elite QBs in the playoffs. i’m not sure his teams ever touched double digit wins, as his OL aged and the running game disintegrated as did the entire offense. and everytime the jets tried to take that “next step”, they went further backwards. still, just like dungy, i fear that when you give him the type of QB that lets the offense hold up its end (mark sanchez wasn’t that), he will be able to reach another level like dungy did. i’d rather he stay out of Atlanta

Let’s be real about it, with Lovie Smith as the Bucs HC, they make the teams around them look better…. Rex as the Falcons HC is going to have a huge impact on the Bucs whether people want to believe it or not…. He has had years of experience going up against Bill Belichek 2 times a year…

Rex in Atlanta should worry people. The Jets are my wifes team (shi**y footbal year in our house) and those guys bring the defense.
He’s a blitz guru that will split out QB in two. Him on a team with a good offense is a scary thought let alone in our division.

I was a big Koetter supporter because of his connection with the Oregon program his close personal association with Helfrich would have made him perfect to mentor Mariota.
If he’s not available….then I’ll toss in with Luvmybucs. We could do a lot worse than his lineup which makes sense to me.

You may be right but that is actually stupid logic on the part of Lovie. The ONE thing Lovie could do to INSURE a third year as head coach would be hire a really talented OC…draft the Heisman of the OC’s choice and then simply make sure the defense plays well.
In that scenario barring a defensive collapse Lovie will be given a pass and he should. He’ll simply say I turned it over to this OC with the big rep and let him pick the best QB in the draft. It’s not my fault. And Lovie will be right.
If Lovie picks an OC and let’s him really run the offense then I’d breathe a sigh of relief. If Lovie tries to interject himself into the offense or play calling I’m truly frightened!

I see one real problem with the OC search…..on one hand the Bucs can pick the brain of the prospect in regards to which QB they like and why….they can also check their thoughts on Glennon…
But it’s hard for it to work the other way……OCs will want to know which QB that L&L are interested in…..and if Glazers are on board….and that information is likely to be kept a secret.

my question is mainly to you joe, but honestly, everybodys input is welcome, what do you think about marty schottenheimer, is he retired completely from the league, or is he on another teams staff in one capacity or another, do you think he would make a good O.C. and do you think he would even be interested if offer was on the table what do all you buc fans think?

It will take Rex a couple years to turn that defense into something, they are soft like, Michael Johnson soft. By the time he does that he will be forced to scheme against a much better Bucs offense. That whole team in ATL is usually in the tub.

What happened to your confidence in the almighty Winston? Rex’s DEF will be like swiss cheese based on the 1,459 articles previously written about the greatness that is Winston. You either believe he is the second coming of Joe Montana or not. Be consistent in what you spout. I will be glad this is over when they announce Mariota. lol I mean your track record on QBs is not great…last year it was the idiot Manziel…but oh yeah every 10,000 word you did mention Bridgewater…way to put it all on the line big guy.
This bucs team will only get better when Lovie is gone. Some birds just dont change their feathers no matter how long they spend in the basement unemployed watching film.

It’s a game of musical chairs and the Bucs will not have a seat at the end of the music. What would entice a top OC to come here over the other opportunities that are available? We have earned the reputation of being the choice of last resort. Yes, in the end, someone will justify it in their mind with the pleasant climate, beautiful surroundings, outdoor activities, no state tax etc, but they would only choose the Bucs, because they weren’t offered anything better (can you say scrapheap, or another college coach “wanna be in the NFL”). Sort of like what happened with Bo Jackson (Don’t draft me, I won’t play for the Bucs), but now with coaches (and FA’s).

I don’t see why anyone is worried about Rex Ryan. His teams fall apart….they fail. I would absolutely LOVE for Rex to be the next coach of the Falcons. We will be one step closer to winning the South. I hope they hire him. We just need an offense. If we can get an average offense on the field we are in the game.

19 years ago Koetter coached in Oregon for one season. So this would make him a great coach for Marcus M.? I just don’t understand this reasoning.

Not sure I agree with Koetter connection but Mark Helfrich Oregon’s HC just said that Koetter and Chip Kelly are his mentors and had the most influence on him as a coach. Coached under Koetter for 9 seasons.

Good point: I think when the Bucs hire an OC we will have a clear indication if Lovie is afraid of hiring a potential replacement. His seat could become very hot if the Bucs start off 1-5 or so again next year and if a potential replacement is on staff there is a possibility he could get the pink slip like the Raiders did to their skipper this year….
