Yesterday, Joe brought word that a former Buccaneer said Vincent Jackson isn’t worth the $10 million owed him in 2015.
Tampa Bay general manager Jason Licht agrees.
Licht, however, is not taking the negative slant. Licht made it clear that Jackson’s true value can’t be measured.
Speaking on the Buccaneers Radio Network last week, Licht raved about the Bucs’ offensive captain.
“Everybody on our team really holds Vincent in very high esteem, as a person and as a player,” Licht said, “And he sets such a great example for these guys without even knowing he’s doing it. He’s one of those guys that is gonna behind the scenes mentor young guys and not tell anybody he’s doing it. He doesn’t want a gold star for it. I mean, we all know that he’s big in the military, in support here, and he’s got a little bit of a military mindset when it comes to unselfishness.
“So he’s a very valuable player. In addition to being a very good player, he’s a great person in this locker room. And, yeah, you know, you can’t put a price tag on that.”
Man, that sure sounds like the Bucs wouldn’t even consider parting with Jackson this offseason.
Joe would like to see Jackson return, but Joe surely wouldn’t bet on it. The Bucs might decide to pull a Revis and look two land two quality, younger players in free agency for the price of Jackson, plus a draft pick as part of a Jackson trade.

He is certainly not as explosive and sure handed as he once was, but with the salary cap going up, I say we keep him. Unless we could get a 2nd round draft pick or better, that is, in trade.

Well he’s not restructuring since he held out on an actual winning team, so seriously, seriously doubt he takes a pay cut to play for a loser. But he shouldn’t have to restructure, his deal is fine. Considering the awful talent evaluation skills shown so far by Lovie and Licht, the though of trading Jackson and getting two guys to replace him sounds like it’ll backfire.

Can someone please explain why are we in the position to let quality football players go and what evidence do you have to suggest we will end up with good football players instead? The Bucs have a really tough time identifying good football players if you haven’t noticed so getting rid of one of the few we have left sounds like a Lovie/lapdog move.

look for the patriots to take him. there seems to be a trading relationship between the two teams. the bucs always get the the bad deal in the trades. darelle revis, tim wright, la garrett blount, logan mankins, etc….etc….

A restructure should be a win-win…..I am sure Bucs will try…..even VJ may try….nothing ventured, nothing gained. A restructue will be a 2 or 3 year deal….I think VJ can be a good # 2 reciever for that period…..no longer.
We need players like this to stay.

If this was a Haynesworth type of situation where we are overpaying for an extremely talented underachiever that is also cancer in the locker room, it would make a lot of sense to part ways.
Jackson and Mankins are two players who are worth less than their production suggests. But they bring some intangibles and set an example for many young guys. For a team below the cellar, we can do much worse than overpaying two high character average players.

Heck, he’s worth every penny as long as someone else is picking up the tab, if it were Licht’s money, it might be an altogether different take…!!
Besides, why get a guy who catches everything when you can have a great guy who catches some and drops a lot too!

Agree,,….you have to average things out on salaries….you can’t always have every player performing to their current salary level.
A good example is Vjax & ME13……because of the lower draft salaries ME13 earns $510k in 2015……he did get a 9mil 5yr salary bonus…. but even adding a portion of that gives us a great financial deal for the two recievers,
You could do the same with Goldson/McDougald or Dotson/Mankins
It averages out…..but you must keep good players especially if they are leaders.

These NFL owners make $ hand over fist. $10 million isn’t sssssssh*t to them. This guy may not be worth it because of his age and drops but he sure as hell is a consummate PRO. There will not be a better receiver on the open market. Guaranteed!

His money isn’t preventing is signing anyone else we need, and if he is slightly overpaid versus production, that happens in every workplace on the world.
There are some people who are underpaid, some who are overpaid, and that will always be the case.

We saw how good Carolina and other teams are when they got rid of their high priced receivers. The only reason Carolina is in the playoffs is no other South team had a winning record. Just think what Steve Smith would still do for them.
We only had GMC that was any good in the DL at the beginning of the year and he was double and triple teamed because we had nobody else.
What do you think is going to happen to ME13 as a lone ranger receiver, double and triple teamed.
It is like our running backs without a blocking OL running up the middle, they usually don’t reach where the center starts the play.
And I guess our offense without an OC and McCown doing anything, just like pissing in the wind.

I agree with Mac, why would we want to dismantle our best position because of a few million dollars, which I believe V-Jax deserves. He’s been one of the best players we’ve brought in, in a long time. He taught Mammoth Mike Evans how to become a NFL ready WR and that’s worth the extra money that he would otherwise not deserve because of the drops, but he did have a broken wrist. He’s a veteran leader as well. What we need is clear a OC first then a, QB, OL, LB, DE, & depth everywhere.

I thought if a team would trade for V-Jax they would have to also take his salary too. What team would take him at that cost? If he would restructure the contract for a new team, he would probably do it for us. He’d make more here in FL than anywhere else bc of the taxes, and be apart of turning this mess around. I’ve got a feeling we’re going to have an OUTSTANDING defense next season. OUTSTANDING I SAY!

Stupid fans asking a proven player to be traded so we can have another glaring need to add and not know what we have with who is brought in. That worked great with revis trade ? Yet we have enough under cap now to keep revis. Who cares if we pay him $10 mil we are under cap by more than that every year. That being the case we would not need that money to sign players when we have the money already. His numbers prove no drop off in ability even with age so that’s not excuse. It’s impressive considering the offense and QB he had to play with this year.
Let evans be only proven WR next yr and you guys will be calling for his head cause his production is down. Football 101 easy to defend one wide out and 3 other WR on the other side that barely make practice rosters.

Getting rid of V Jax would be another HUGE Mistake! He was a Pro Bowler 2 years ago with over 1400 yds and the only reason he hasn’t done it the last two years is because we don’t have a good QB (Glennon/McCown) No Oline , No running game, we cant keep the O on the field. He would easily have at least 1400 yds if play’n with Rogers, Brady, Manning (either one) Luck, Bree’s, Flacco, Rothlesburger, Ryan, Stafford, Romo, or Rivers. Yeah he’s a little older but played hurt last two years also. Awesome leader! He deserves to be paid a high salary on the worst team in the NFL (2014). No way our O plays better in 2015 with out V Jax. We will be worse without V JAX,, And that’s scary to think about.

Why in the hell does local media and fans want to see VJ gone over ten million dollars? Sure, if you can restructure his contract to $7-8 mil/yr with a bit more guaranteed money, then great. To put it in perspective, 49ers WR Stevie Johnson’s average yearly salary is $7.25 mil/yr. VJ was 23rd in receiving yards with the worst offense and worst QB in the league. The guy isn’t a head case, doesn’t get into trouble and is a great teammate. All of those things have intangible value that doesn’t show up on the stat sheet. You’re not going to get the same production from anyone in FA for a cheaper price. Getting rid of VJ would make Tampa worse.
As for Ian Beckles, I didn’t even know he still had a radio show. I thought Shaun King ate him some time ago.

maybe 2 years from now when he has declined more and we are itching for more cap space, but we have so many garbage players we can purge before we think about VJax. there is a salary cap floor the bucs have to meet, and every year teams prove that you can’t buy a turnaround in FA. we might save a couple million vs what another #1b WR might demand, and you then run the risk that you’ve signed the next mike wallace or anthony collins, with no assurances that you will get the character, effort, and production that VJax has proven he brings to the table every season.

As was stated above, his salary will not prevent the Bucs from signing players they need. He is a known commodity and is much better than many of you are giving him credit for.

We getting down to market value. What is something, an asset worth in simple business terms.
Let’s use real estate for example. It’s worth what an unbiased buyer (no connection to the seller at all) would pay in an open market.
And so what would an NFL team pay for Vincent Jackson on the open market?
There must be some way to gauge this. I think Vincent Jackson should make whatever any team would pay him and that’s what the Bucs should offer.
If VJAX can get 10 million somewhere else he’s worth it. If he would have to take a cut on the open market then he should give us a restructure.
Because VJAX is “priceless” in the locker room we should pay him whatever the max is on the open market. He’s a gem and out of respect we should pay him market value. Out of respect to us he should respect market value as well and settle for whatever that is.
