Jameis Watch II: News Hints At Decision
December 30th, 2014Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, national champion James Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon and Josh McCown.
It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback to wear No. 5 ever in the state of Florida.
Joe is breaking from pattern to offer two “Jameis Watch” updates because there seems to be telling news.
It seems Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller, who was lost for the season due to a right shoulder injury, is looking to transfer as a fifth-year senior, a move so a player can play one more year to use up his remaining eligibility after graduation.
It’s not unlike what Russell Wilson did when he transferred from North Carolina State to Wisconsin for his final season.
Well, per Tom D’Angelo of the Palm Beach Post, Miller has informed Florida State that he is interested in bringing his talents to Tallahassee.
#FSU has been told it’s on list of schools Ohio State QB Braxton Miller is interested in playing for next year.
— Tom D’Angelo (@tomdangelo44) December 30, 2014
#FSU interested in taking Miller. Miller can transfer and play immediately having already graduated from Ohio State. — Tom D’Angelo (@tomdangelo44) December 30, 2014
So let’s think this through: Surely Miller is not going to even waste his time considering a transfer to a school that already has an entrenched star quarterback. Miller is going to transfer to a school where he knows he can start right away.
Perhaps Miller already knows Jameis Winston has made a decision to turn pro and enter the NFL Draft. That’s the only logical explanation.
December 30th, 2014 at 4:21 pm
I hope Braxton Miller knows how to throw the football. We don’t need running quarterbacks in the state of Florida.
December 30th, 2014 at 4:22 pm
Miller looking to resurrect his draft position for next year and Winston shouting “Show Me The Money!!!”.
December 30th, 2014 at 4:24 pm
OR…
He’s waiting on a decision from Winston and is interested in playing if Winston leaves. You may be reading to much into this.
December 30th, 2014 at 4:24 pm
Uhhhhh. Duhh ?
December 30th, 2014 at 4:31 pm
Just say NO! to Jameis the menace…
December 30th, 2014 at 4:32 pm
Now if we only knew what Lovie is thinking. Have to wait months to figure out his thinking. From his recent statements, Lovie seems open to the possibility that a rookie QB can be successful in making a big impact in the NFL. I don’t know if those are just empty words to temporarily pacify fans who want a top QB drafted. With Lovie, the Bucs future is a complete mystery.
December 30th, 2014 at 4:41 pm
#FSU has been told it’s on list of schools
______________________________________________
This does not mean that Miller knows that Winston is leaving. He told the school if Winston decides to leave that he would be interested in playing for them. Joe, you reach way too much….
December 30th, 2014 at 4:41 pm
BASEBALL baby! Bring on the MILLIONS not the millions that you get in the NFL.
December 30th, 2014 at 4:43 pm
Deadline for declaring for draft is January 15th. When is the transfer deadline? Gut tells me it is after NSD which is first Tuesday in February…
December 30th, 2014 at 4:48 pm
This is about as much of a reach as it is to state the Bucs need a quarterback. Don’t be dumb just to be argumentative.
December 30th, 2014 at 5:00 pm
Another logical explanation is that Braxton Miller is a dumb football player.
Another logical explanation is that Braxton Miller is exploring all possibilities and options.
The smartest thing for Jameis to do is stay in school another year, keep his nose clean, and be drafted #1 overall. Right now it’s possible he might not even get picked up in the first round.
December 30th, 2014 at 5:00 pm
One telling thing I heard Licht say yesterday was they investigate backgrounds thoroughtly which we all know… then he said “we don’t need a choir boy necessarily”…. Hmmm sounds like laying the groundwork for Winston for sure!!!
December 30th, 2014 at 5:00 pm
What are the odds Winston gets arrested and/or accused of something within the next 5 months? Anyone?
December 30th, 2014 at 5:01 pm
To Zam I believe the Bucs can inform Winston he will be their pick and if thats the case there is no need for him to return to FSU.
December 30th, 2014 at 5:02 pm
What Bruce said.
December 30th, 2014 at 5:02 pm
What would Winston gain from telling anybody what his plans are right now? How would an Ohio State QB get to know that? How could such news not have filtered out from all his friends but be common knowledge for a transfer?
December 30th, 2014 at 5:03 pm
I don’t know if there is a transfer deadline under the graduate rule.
December 30th, 2014 at 5:05 pm
@Nick2 there’s no way the Bucs would have told him that already. In the future sure, but we are talking about Miller somehow having advanced knowledge right now.
December 30th, 2014 at 5:05 pm
Joe,
I’m not opposed to selecting a QB, just not sure about Mariota or Winston, or whether we should use the #1 pick on them to be our best move.
So according to your mad math, you want everyone to believe that Winston has already declared, when in truth he really hasn’t. What if he decides that staying with FSU would be the best PR move he could make, especially if they win the National Championship. Fisher may ask him to stay, give him a chance to clean up his image, and make it 3 championships in a row. Now, if I were you I’d be rooting for FSU to lose, or my scenario could come true.
OH, and thanks for not using bold italics…
December 30th, 2014 at 5:05 pm
Nick2, he also said he had to have something above the shoulders. Winston hasn’t proven that yet.
December 30th, 2014 at 5:05 pm
Nick2 Says:
“One telling thing I heard Licht say yesterday was they investigate backgrounds thoroughtly which we all know… then he said “we don’t need a choir boy necessarily”…. Hmmm sounds like laying the groundwork for Winston for sure!!!”
Smoke and mirrors, folks, smoke and mirrors. Let’s see how much we can get some desperate HC/GM to offer so we don’t take ‘their’ guy.
December 30th, 2014 at 5:10 pm
So why would Braxton Miller be interested in transferring to Florida State if Winston is staying? You telling Joe that Miller wants to learn how to fly in a trapeze so bad he’s willing to p!ss away his last year of eligibility? Short of Winston getting hurt, there is no way in God’s green earth Miller would start over Winston.
December 30th, 2014 at 5:12 pm
Why do I get the feeling we’ll see “Jameis Watch III and IV soon!
December 30th, 2014 at 5:12 pm
Yawn…..
December 30th, 2014 at 5:12 pm
Skyline I agree he has made stupid decisiions. One bright spot is he has intelligence, the guy was offerered a scholarship at Stanford. You don’t get that even as an elite athelete without above average intelligence.
December 30th, 2014 at 5:19 pm
Compare what happens if Winston falls to mid first round this year, or stays in college and gets drafted #1 in 2016:
Enter Now Wait
2015 $7,000,000 $0
2016 $2,000,000 $19,000,000
2017 $2,500,000 $ 5,000,000
2018 $3,000,000 $ 6,000,000
etc.
By foregoing $7 million now, in 3 years he’d pick up an additional $17 million, assuming he keeps his nose clean.
December 30th, 2014 at 5:21 pm
Because Miller sees a possible opening. It doesn’t mean that he already knows.
again, FSU has been told they are on Braxton Millers list of schools he would be willing to transfer to. No where does that statement imply that he has beforehand knowledge that Winston has declared. geeze
December 30th, 2014 at 5:23 pm
Let me add also, if Winston stays at FSU, Braxton Miller will sign somewhere else
December 30th, 2014 at 5:25 pm
Winston is going to be a bust just cares about Winston will be worse than a freeman or jonny football the kid respects nothing.
December 30th, 2014 at 5:27 pm
He isn’t able to stay three more years. And he’s goin to go in the top 2. That’s done.
If we don’t take him Tennessee will laugh all the way to the playoffs, happy as anything we passed on him.
Might not go in round 1. What a crock of…..
December 30th, 2014 at 5:27 pm
When Jameis has his contact lenses in, He becomes dangerous on the football field.
I hope the Bucs pick him. Love him,or Hate him the kid is big, poised, athletic, and has tons of NFL potential. He already has more pocket presence than Josh McClown. He’s proven to be a winner, and a leader on the football field. I’m not willing to base his future performance on past mistakes.
There’s not a person alive who hasn’t made mistakes on the way to becoming the person they are today.
With proper mentoring from some of the Locals like D. Brooks, or Tony Dungy, and The current,or future Bucs coaches Jameis will do just fine here in Tampa Bay, and in The NFL.
December 30th, 2014 at 5:31 pm
SAMCRO:
Yeah, you are right. He and his family spent hours going over prospective colleges to transfer to that already have star starting quarterbacks. Makes all the sense in the world. No one talks off the record or texts one another. We all live in vacuums.
Meanwhile, Joe is going to spend the rest of the night researching brand new Chevy trucks – straight off the assembly line — for sale only at Ford dealerships.
December 30th, 2014 at 5:46 pm
Makes little sense as to why FSU would want a 5th year QB for a single season. Seems like Jimbo would prefer system guy that could at least a two year starter.
December 30th, 2014 at 5:59 pm
The whole football nation knows that there is a chance that Winston will declare. I’m sure after Miller graduated it didn’t take him a minute to list FSU as a place he would like to transfer to if Winston leaves. I’m sure there was not much planning there. You are way to dramatic. Sir, we get it. You’re supporting Winston’s jock strap and just to make certain you’re not wrong this time, you’re hedging your prediction to include Mariota. Just like you claim being in the corner with Bridgestone when 99% of your articles supported Johnny Numbnuts.
and while you’re talking with the Ford rep about your future Chevy truck why don’t you ask him if he can include Dodge’s performance package? ..smh
December 30th, 2014 at 6:03 pm
seems like a much more sound conclusion to make if he had already committed to FSU, but it sounds like he might be waiting on an announcement just like everybody else to know for sure
December 30th, 2014 at 6:09 pm
I honestly don’t care what Winston does. As the consensus #2 QB prospect, he shouldn’t even be a consideration for the team with the #1 draft pick. #simplelogic
December 30th, 2014 at 6:29 pm
An article on a college QB possibly going to FSU? And I thought this was a Bucs website.
December 30th, 2014 at 6:35 pm
@ Joe why don’t you talk about the best player in college football? He where’s number eight and plays for the ducks. How many head coaches college or NFL have vouched for Winston. I have heard a few for Mariota.
December 30th, 2014 at 7:38 pm
Nybucsfan, agreed. We have the #1 pick, meaning we can draft the best player in the nation. Who cares about the #2 QB?!?? Not me. And I’m sure not the Bucs. Unless we’re really stupid.
December 30th, 2014 at 7:52 pm
Joes sorry but mostly with zamcro on this one. Story seems a bit of a reach. Besides, if I’m counseling Jamies, I have him buy a huge insurance policy and go back to fsu next year. He had a mediocre year stats wise this year. He could stay clean, proving his character to the nfl, put up big numbers and be #1 overall.
December 30th, 2014 at 7:57 pm
Lol at Erik. Watch a little film before you type nonsense! 5 yard slant passes to wide open receivers and zero progressions is not what will be expected of an NFL QB. Mariota is a HUGE gamble. Winston is the best QB by far and everyone knows it. because he was accused of something that he was never tried or convicted of everyone just assumes he will end up in jail any day now. Do a little research, look at what Winston has really done both on and off the field, compare it to what Mariota does on the field and the college offense he runs. After you do that come back on here and admit that you were wrong. Winston is the clear choice. If the Bucs pass on Winston it will go down in Bucs lore as another one of the huge mistakes this organization made.
December 30th, 2014 at 8:20 pm
@bucfan4life have you really watched film? Who throws off there back foot big problem in the NFL? Who has a fast release and sets there feet? Why does Winston have 17 int’s bucause under presser he try’s to make throws he shouldn’t? Mariota does a nice job keeping his eyes down field even outside the pocket and makes the right read. I would say you should watch tape. And mr.Winston has a funny delivery and a trouble maker
December 30th, 2014 at 8:40 pm
“We don’t need running quarterbacks in the state of Florida.”
Luther better not tell that to Gator fans. I don’t think they want to return that Heisman Trophy or the National Title Tim Tebow ran the Gators to.
December 30th, 2014 at 8:54 pm
yes I think jameis winston has made his decision to go pro.
or the ex ohio state QB thinks he has.
December 30th, 2014 at 8:54 pm
It’s seems Joes can post anything stupid and all us sheep comment.. Who cares.. He’s not a Buc nor will he be.. Dumb waste of space on the site.. See Johnny football for other examples…
December 30th, 2014 at 8:55 pm
lightningbuc Says
“An article on a college QB possibly going to FSU? And I thought this was a Bucs website.”
It’s related. This kid would not be going to FSU unless Winston was declaring for the draft.
December 30th, 2014 at 8:57 pm

…um…you do realize there is a 50-50 chance of him being numberone this year, right?
December 30th, 2014 at 9:17 pm
Really!!?!! ‘Jameis watch 2’ or ‘Johnny Football Redux’?
December 30th, 2014 at 9:25 pm
Agree it is a reach to say he IS declaring. I think Braxton is just saying I’m putting FSU on my list and if Winston declares I would be happy to come there for a year. I don’t see FSU letting him though as they have a good backup that could step in. See Clemson game for that one. He also has Duke and Oregon on his list. That means Mariota declared. hahah. I’m sure Mariota will though. So we will probably see Braxton at Oregon before you see him at FSU.
December 30th, 2014 at 11:17 pm
It all makes sense, 2014 was all about drafting a QB in 2015! There are really only a handful of really good QB’s in the league and those Qb’s aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. The only shot at a great one is to hit the lottery and draft one. That being said 2014 draftable QB’s were a joke. Every last one of them are mediocre at best, a couple have the potential to grow into something more but for now it was Meh. 2015 provided not 1 but 2 outstanding prospects up for grabs IF they decide to leave their respective schools. Either will provide us with a much greater chance of winning than any FA available out there!
December 30th, 2014 at 11:24 pm
I prefer Famous Jameis over Mariota simply because Winston is the better football QB of the two. I strongly feel this locker room and coaching staff can keep his mental lapses in check! 1st. it’s all in the contract. Let’s not forget having millions of dollars ripped from you is much worse than being slapped on the wrist in college. 2. We have some strong minded leaders in this locker room IE VJack, Mankins, McCoy, McDonald, David, Gholston I don’t think they’ll allow such childish things go down after he was drafted to be the savior of this franchise. 3. Lovie, although not Schiano stern, is quite strict and doesn’t take issues like that lightly. Most of 2014 has (for the first time in years) actually been quite in the negative headlines (outside of losing almost every game).
Mariota is nice and all but i just don’t see him being as good as Winston can be. I really seem him as a more talented version of RGIII. Bottom line both need work to get them to be truly successful in this league. Why not try to fix the one with the most talent to offer who potentially can give the biggest return. It’s simple business?
December 30th, 2014 at 11:31 pm
I hear you StPeteBucsFan and I hated Uban Myer for that crap. He is the reason why struggled Alex Smith so bad and why Tebow never made it in the NFL.
December 31st, 2014 at 12:56 am
Of course Braxton wants to go to a school with a strong defense, great running game, and 50-50 airball receivers who are actually closer to 70-30. What QB wouldn’t want that set-up?
December 31st, 2014 at 10:29 am
Winston will stay in school. As much as I believe he is the best QB in college football by a long shot, his off field history will scare off teams in the top half of the draft. I think teams that are adverse to any type of risk like the Bucs will pass and he is likely to slide quite a bit. If he stays and keeps his nose clean for the year it shows he’s matured making him a lock for the 1st pick next year assuming he stays healthy. Keep in mind he also has a potential promising baseball career as well m
December 31st, 2014 at 11:07 am
Skyline I wish I could be there to see your face week one when that Seminole breaks that huddle and gose up under center for first time. That will be priceless.
December 31st, 2014 at 11:22 am
Zam, no one reputable, and I mean no one, is projecting Jameis Winston outside of the top 10 in the draft. ESPN has him at two. Most projections have him in the top 2. There is very little to gain from staying in school for one year to move up ONE spot.
Scouts and the NFL are basing their selections on projection to the NFL, and despite the increase in INTs Jameis projects very, very well to NFL and has shown it on film. He will be a top 10 pick and most likely top 2.
December 31st, 2014 at 11:43 am
^^^ most projections had Johnny football going in the top 10. By now you should know that none of that means a damn thing.
December 31st, 2014 at 12:05 pm
I’m taking bets on Jamies going #1 over all,I’m willing to provide my phone number, home and work address, along with my email for anyone interested. Hit me up,to all yu duck lovers.
December 31st, 2014 at 12:18 pm
The fans in the stands during last weekend’s game were holding signs saying”draft Jamies”. Now I dont know about you daily poster but it seems to me those folks were making it clear about who they want next season.
