Josh McCown Endorses Marc Trestman

Josh McCown had a farewell chat with media at One Buc Palace this morning — no tears.
Joe asked McCown about the next Bucs offensive coordinator.
Thankfully, McCown didn’t dare suggest Marcus Arroyo had a shot.
McCown likely has played for more offensive coordinators than any quarterback in NFL history, and after some pressing, McCown did acknowledge that just fired former Bears head coach Marc Trestman tops the list he’s been around.
“I think Marc’s an outstanding coach and a great offensive mind,” McCown said. “In regards to here? Yeah, I would keep that conversation between Lovie and I, but I just think Marc is an outstanding coach and an outstanding person, and has a great sense of offensive football, especially quarterback play. I just know, for me personally, I played the best football of my career under him.
“Just as I’ve been around, like you said, a bunch of different [offensive coordinators] in my career, He’s probably one of the most detailed, as just with our gameplan and stuff like that, I really felt like was on top of it.”
The Bucs could do a lot worse than Trestman, who guided the Bears to the No. 2 offense in the NFL in 2013.
Joe likes Trestman, in part, because he proved he knows how to use big receivers, and Trestman also sought a big tight end, Martellus Bennett, in free agency this past offseason. That’s very similar to the Bucs’ personnel. Of course, Trestman’s background is in QB coaching.
The Bucs could do much worse.

If we brought in Mariotta, I’d like to see them trying to talk to Kyle Shanahan. He did a great job of making RGIII good, despite not being able to read defenses and having questionable ability to go through progressions. He was also able to make the browns’ offense competitive, despite Hoyer not being great and Josh Gordon missing most of the season. I think he’d be able to put something together to help Mariotta be serviceable early in this league and, hopefully, really good in time

I could accept Marc Trestman.
But I suspect Dirk Koetter will be fired by the falcons. Matt Ryan isn’t too bad, plus he knows a division rival.
Still, Trestman is a good option too.
Whoever it is, Lovie and Licht to make the right choice, choose quickly, and get him from the NFL, not college.

Funny how so many people want Winston because “he is Undefeated” as if the QB wins all the games.
If this is your argument then you Must admit that Tebow is a better QB than many other QBs because he has 9 wins and 7 losses in the NFL which makes him a “winning” QB. Plus he won a playoff game so that makes him better than a Bunch of NFL qbs right???? Right??????

No one should be surprised by this endorsement!
If the Bucs decide on a more traditional offense (Broncos/Patriots), and I believe they will, they should not rest until Marc Trestman, who is just released as HC of the Bears, is comfortable in the Florida sun. The man is a virtual QB Whisperer and is known as one of the best offensive minds in the business. Some guys make great OCs, but lousy coaches. Marc Trestman and Norv Turner stand alone in this regard.
And the Bucs should hire Aaron Kromer, his former OC, as O-Line Coach. Kromer was hired by the New Orleans Saints in 2008 as the running backs coach, before becoming the offensive line coach the following season. Under his tenure as OL coach, the Saints sent five players to a combined nine Pro Bowls, and tied for the fewest sacks in the league with 96. Under Kromer, the Saints line twice won the Madden Most Valuable Protectors Award as the best offensive line in the league (in 2009 and 2011). Kromer filled in as the Saints’ interim head coach for the first six games of the 2012 NFL season when Sean Payton was suspended.
Experience, experience, experience! With the state of the QB situation at the Bucs, this is not the time to give a deserving guy an opportunity or grow someone in the position. The Bucs need a CEO for the offense – an area where Lovie has the least experience to offer. Trestman is well suited to prepare a new QB for the NFL and work with the existing talent to put a competent and competitive offense on the field. This is especially true if McCown is retained as the back-up QB. The pieces immediately fall into place.
Trestman is a mad scientist and has the personality and interpersonal skills of dried paint, but he knows offense and how to get the most out of a developing QB. Nobody questions the work he did with MVP Rich Gannon at the Raiders or even Josh McCown at the Bears. The most notable QBs Trestman worked with were Bernie Kosar, Steve Young, Jake Plummer and Rich Gannon. He served as either QB coach or OC when coaching each player. Trestman was able to boost the performance of every quarterback he has ever coached (nobody can help Jay Cutler), with impressive results as his coaching career went on.

Joe, you made a point on Twitter that bears repeating I feel and that is the Marc Trestman was able to somehow coach up Josh McCown for a few good games last season. If Trestman can perform that kind of magic with McCown, just image what he can do with the #1 pick!

Trestman is such a great offensive coach he just led the Bears to a season where Houston easily outpaced them, and where the Jets barely finished behind them. And that’s with their yards being hyper-inflated by garbage time, with 20% of their total yards coming from garbage time
Trestman is overrated. If he didn’t get to coach the greatest QB in CFL history he probably never gets the Bears job.

“McCown Endorses Marc Trestman”….isn’t that kind of the kiss of death? I realize anything is a step up from Marcus Arroyo calling plays, but I think there are other priorities here…not just getting an OC that Josh McCown is familiar and comfortable with. If McCown is on this team next year (shudder!) it needs to be in a backup/mentor capacity only. I think who the Bucs chose as their next OC, will give us a lot of insight into which way the proceed with the #1 draft pick.

Here’s the thing. Football fans always like to blame the head coach for everything, but it’s not always accurate.
A head coach has to hire his coordinators and then trust them. No coordinator will work under a dictator. They want to control their units because they want to be in charge of their own destinies.
There are a few exceptions, but mostly, head coaches place their trust in their assistants. Lovie does. Marc does.
I’m sure he had “some” influence on the offense, but not as much as some might assume. He had other duties.

I’d be all about Trestman coming in. I liked what I saw last year and it sounds like there was inner turmoil that brought the team down this year. If he can just focus on the offense, instead of all the other HC stuff, I think he’ll be really good

Really, I think the coordinator hires are more important than the head coach hires most of the time. The exception would be Bill Bellicheat, of course.

I’d pass on Trestman too. When is Lovie going to be through picking the scraps from Chicago? As if that carcass has’nt already been picked clean. The Bucs should do a repeat of last years draft, by drafting all offense.

I’ve been saying this since about week 5 that if the Bears tanked this season that Trestman would be running the show.
Lovie has shown over and over again that he only stays inside his comfort zone. This one is right on the money.
I truly do hate how we’re becoming Chicago’s sloppy seconds tho. But Trestman would be a good hire. I could see him liking a Mariota.

IMO-Jameis Winston personality would dominate the quieter more reserved Trestman. On the other hand I think, some of the strengths of Chud’s personality would benefit the development of Winston. (ref: Cam Newton)
I wouldn’t stop there though. Hiring a QB Coach that actually played in the NFL-So IMO Jim Zorn would be an ideal candidate

Robert 9, if the Bucs were to keep three QBs again, I could live with keeping McCown. He wouldn’t meet incentives as a third stringer, and he’s a great mentor in the off season.
Really, his pock presence is very good too. He senses the defense and moves well in the pocket. It’s the rest about his that sucks. Which is why he should not be a starter.
But mentor? Top-notch. And it surprises me to say that, because I did not think it would be the case.

You can’t have an entire staff of laid-“Don’t rock the boat” type dudes. You got have some type of balance. Listen to how many owners that have fired Coaches and GM’s today-Because they wanted folks that can coach & mold multiply types of personalities.
As we all know there’s 2 sides to every coin- You gotta have a few crazy uncles on your roster. You need aggressive, physical TONE SETTERS to help balance out a roster & coaching staff. Not just a bunch of choir boys that became team captains and positional coaches.

did you see the safety yesterday????? the DE was coming from 10 yards and mcclown never took his eyes off the left side of the field.
it was like he has no peripheral vision.

I agree with what you are saying, but Bilicheat isn’t the exception. He is the example. He chooses good coordinators. Successful coaches do. They are good at spotting them like scouts are at spotting good players.
My ‘hope’ is that Lovie wasn’t able to get ‘his’ assistants last year, and will fix (at least) some of that problem this off-season.

So unless these guys egos aren’t that big you think Lovie wants to hire a guy that replaced him and now that same guy wants to work under Lovie? Umm don’t see that happening. And that QB whisperer basically oversaw a really good QB go down the drain in 1 season much like our own Josh Freeman last year.
Why is it people just look for familiar names? That’s the best we could get? So what, we can trot out McKown again next year?

so in 2016 we are willing to give the 37 year old a contact extension.

I’d be fine with that if it was so Mariota could spend a season watching a pro – but if they see that as an excuse to not draft a QB I’m going to lose my mind.

Trestman would be a perfectttt fit. He gets the 1st overall pick, 2 big wrs, big te, several solid RBs. This is an OC’s dream job. Plus Trests daughters are hotttt. I wanna see em in bikinis at Hogans.

Testman would be a great OC hire. Hope it happens. If we can get both Trestman as OC and Marinelli as DC – Then we would be in great shape coordinator wise.
If Trestman is willing to be OC for the Bucs – promise him total control of the Offense and let him be in charge of who all the Offensive position coaches will be. And of course let him choose which QB he thinks will work best in his system. I hope it’s Winston but I trust Marc Trestman’s opinion as to which of the top 2 QBs will be a better pro more than anyone we currently have in the building at OBP.

One of Trestman’s so called weaknesses as an HC was his dry, scholarly, calm approach. He’s not a rah rah yeller. That could be perfect for a new Heisman QB who will already be under a ton of pressure without an excitable OC.
If Trestman comes here as OC that’s also a good sign vis a vis Lovie. It means Trestman believes Lovie has learned his lesson and will give Trestman considerable control over the offense. Otherwise Trestman wouldn’t come to the Bucs.
