Oniel Cousins Not Worried

Bucs OL Oniel Cousins, now a free agent, isn't losing sleep over his immediate NFL future.

Oniel Cousins, soon a free agent, isn’t losing sleep over his immediate NFL future.

The Bucs finished the season at a very Leeman Bennett-like 2-14 (that’s who the coach was the last time the Bucs were so putrid). Hell, even good teams make changes to the roster after a season.

So, you can bet your Jameis Winston jersey when you are the worst team in the NFL, changes are afoot.

Mason Foster? Joe fears he is gone. Josh Allen? Ought to be. Michael Johnson? Better be. Anthony Collins? Probably. The list goes on.

Arguably, the Bucs’ offensive line played its best game of the year in their last game of the year. The Bucs were tearing up the sadsack Saints defense on the ground. That was, until Bucs coach Lovie Smith ordered the team to go full-blown turtle mode in the second half.

One guy who very well may have played his last game with the Bucs is Oniel Cousins. Starting at right tackle yesterday, Cousins’ contract has come to an end. He’ll be an unrestricted free agent and by some, is regarded as the worst offensive lineman in the NFL.

When Joe asked Cousins about his uncertain future after the game, Cousins was matter-of-fact.

“That is the NFL,” Cousins said. “That’s how things go. That is not in my control. If they want me back here, we’ll see how it plays out. Right now I am going to reflect on the season and spend time with my family.”

Joe has stated the following many times. Joe can only see two O-lineman close to being locks return. Patrick Omameh and Demar Dotson, whether it be left or right tackle. Decked out in full John Travolta in “Saturday Night Fever” garb, replete with white sports coat, black shirt, white pants and white shoes yesterday, Dotson joked he knows he is a tackle for sure.

The rest better have a number for U-Haul saved on their phones.

    Any chance EDS comes back as depth or maybe moved to guard? Just curious.

    @Joe

    Please forward that number to Offensive Line Coach George Warhop as well.

    Another sh*t year coming. New offense and players needing to gel….

    Solution:

    Bring back Aaron Kromer….

    Remember Aaron Kromer, Bill Muir, Paul Hackett and Jon Gruden built- the most successful line we’ve ever had as an organization.

    Kromer, know for his teaching skills and attention to detail. Under his watch …

    *Five Saints blockers were selected to the Pro Bowl. That same line only allowed 70 sacks over the past three seasons, the third-lowest total in the NFL.

    @MadMax – While I cannot imagine the team not looking in earnest for serious upgrades along the line, the serious lack of available talent out there means that we’ll probably see a few familiar faces along the line still next year, beyond Dotson and Omameh. They should be able to upgrade a few positions, which will help greatly, but I don’t think they’ll dump the whole line. We saw this year that just changing for the sake of doing it leads to bad play. If they can legitimately upgrade, I can’t see a situation where they wouldn’t.

    Kromer’s in Chicago and was the source of the Bear locker room leak. That being said, he’ll definitely be available.

  7. OB Says:

    We need a new line coach whoever he is.

  8. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Brandon

    True he was the source of the Leak.

    But as ESPN blogger Michael Wright stated

    “Aaron Kromer broke locker room code and breached the trust of quarterback Jay Cutler,” Wright asserts. Yet, “make no mistake, what Kromer said wasn’t wrong. It was just the manner in which he did it.”

    Let’s also be honest, by stating there’s a lot of players, equipment and office personnel quietly available to the press. Anyone of them could’ve said would we already thought.

    @Brandon

    With that being said, no doubt he will be available. He’s one of the Upper Tier Talent evaluators for the position. Would be interesting to see if Gru takes the Oakland job; will Kromer follow.

    I know everyone is in full blown Qb mode but we need an O-line and O-line coach bad. I mean if you really think Winston or Mariota will work with this line or whatever Warhop puts together your nuts. Also we should go back and grab PJ fleck from Western Kentucky, he seems to be doing well in College and did well with Jackson and Willimas under Schiano. Might work out well as an Asst OC or OC in general.
