The Dreadful Offensive Line
December 24th, 2014Joe has just about tapped out his vocabulary detailing how miserable and how dreadful the Bucs offensive line has been. And to think the Bucs wanted this offensive line after gutting the roster from the previous regime.
Last Sunday against the Packers it was a complete and utter jailbreak. When you cough up seven sacks, that is out of hand. And that’s not counting how many other times Bucs quarterback Josh McCown was pummeled.
A brave man like Andy Benoit of theMMQB.com decided to go over the tape of the game and he seemed aghast at how little the Bucs offensive line mustered against the Packers.
These are just a few examples below. Benoit’s notes on the heinous play just go on and on and on and on and on, via his Twitter feed. He actually had one good thing to write about Patrick Omameh and that was it.
#Packers #Bucs Film: Matthews sack was edge rush vs. overloaded 6 OL front, he got matched 1 on 1 vs. Gilkey on edge.
— Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) December 24, 2014
Film: #Bucs pass pro was bad; McCown under pressure and moved off spot. Dotson and Cousins did not hold ground well. — Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) December 24, 2014
#Bucs Film: Cousins vs. bull rush is a problem. Ex. Peppers sack.
— Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) December 24, 2014
#Packers #Bucs Film: Neal sack was very well-executed long stunt inside. Mankins late coming off the setup block, Neal good speed. — Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) December 24, 2014
#Packers #Bucs Film: Peppers destroyed Allen on next play too but Matthews stunt beat him to the sack.
— Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) December 24, 2014
Film: #Bucs OL, which had 3 backups in at times and 2 for game, simply could not compete. This was as one-sided as any film all year. — Andy Benoit (@Andy_Benoit) December 24, 2014
As much as the Bucs need a quarterback — and they most certainly do — the Bucs simply must revamp this offensive line (again), or next year may just be more of the same.
December 24th, 2014 at 11:11 am
No need to worry, Lovie can sign a strong line next year thru free agency…. OH, WAIT! Cancel that…
December 24th, 2014 at 11:13 am
Hand picked by L&L…money… traded drafts picks…nothing to hold them back….and this was the BEST they came up with….
December 24th, 2014 at 11:16 am
Yup, drafting a QB to play right away is terrible idea with this line. If we draft a QB without significant OLine upgrades, he has to sit all next year so we are destroying him right away. McCown has $5 million reasons to be our rag doll next year while we save the rookie.
December 24th, 2014 at 11:18 am
Trade down twice in the 1 st round….collect picks for 2015 & 2016
then pick
OT
OG

December 24th, 2014 at 11:21 am
It’s a trench war.
We are never going to get any better as long as we neglect to draft O and D linemen.
Trade back the #1 pick, and stock up on some beef.
December 24th, 2014 at 11:36 am
The lions game though. Lol, now that’s what you call pass protection.
December 24th, 2014 at 11:41 am
Andy Benoit had to watch film to come to the conclusion the Bucs O-Line is horrible?
December 24th, 2014 at 11:44 am
Trading down would be a huge fail. Bucs are in position to take a QB. It has to be done.
You can find very good OG past the 1st round. We have tried drafting OGs, but just keep whiffing.
December 24th, 2014 at 11:49 am
Lovie said we already have the QB of the future !….to those that somehow still envision Lovie as HC next year….Lovie is a colossal failure…every step he takes is wrong
December 24th, 2014 at 11:57 am
I have officially named our vaunted Offensive Line the…
“Pewter People Greeters”! Patent pending. Look for these Tee Shirts at a Flea Market near you.
December 24th, 2014 at 12:09 pm
Line of,the reasons are OL is so horrible is we keep thinking we can draft premium guards and tackles in,the third and fourth round, you can”t. Not when other teams are going after the top players in the trenches in the first and second rounds.
The other reasons our OL is so bad is because of our OC.
Seriously, I can’t believe all of these players who used to be good on other teams all decided to collectively go bad at the same time. Think of the odds of that happening. They are astronomical.
With the lone exception of Collins, I can’t see one player out there loafing.
So what is the common denominator among all these players.
They all operate under the same extremely inexperienced OC who is running a scheme he doesn’t understand or believe in.
So what he reverts to is the same formations and the same plays time after time which the opponent recognizes and is then able to tee off on the snap of the ball.

Your a great fan Dave Pear. You probably also sell bottled water for $10 after a hurricane.
December 24th, 2014 at 12:24 pm
I’m all in for the tank to get better theme. Now if the Bucs could come up with a wise sage to make the necessary picks this team could make a quick turnaround towards winning.
December 24th, 2014 at 12:25 pm
Pewter people greeters. Lmao classic
December 24th, 2014 at 12:26 pm
Steady as she goes.
December 24th, 2014 at 12:32 pm
Me and ddneast agreeing, say what? But yeah if we draft a QB with the 1st pick, that will mean we’ve spent more first round picks in the last 20 years on QBs than on offensive lineman. That’s simply terrible to read, we keep expecting QBs to look good when we’ve never given one a truly great line.
December 24th, 2014 at 12:40 pm
Take one of the Heimans with the first pick.
Then take the first pick of the second round, very much like late first round pick anyway, and put together a package that will let us move up enough to draft a franchise tackle…Stanley-Sherff-Peat…take the next two pics which again will be pretty high…top of 3rd like late second..and grab the best offensive guard/center available.
Football is still a team sport. There are guys who can lift the play of their teammates….guys who are simply good enough to hold their own when surrounded by other good to decent players…and guys who shouldn’t be in the league.
If we had matching stud tackles in rookie/Dotson..picked up at least one really good guard prospect, those three could help hide the play of EDS and Mankins.
EDS and Mankins surrounded by the right talent could probably compete..
December 24th, 2014 at 1:04 pm
OL Coach Warhop has to be upgraded w someone that can pick talent there and develop them.
December 24th, 2014 at 1:15 pm
ddneast,
What are you talking about?
I’ve been a fan since day one.
Never waivered. So how do you correlate a joke to
an accusation on price gouging?
Oh, and it’s “You’re a great fan Dave Pear”.
You mental midget.

Joe said,

Could this statement be misconstrued as a contradiction to what you have been saying? So, if L & L choose to select an OT first, you won’t go all ape sh?t and rally your minions to pick up arms?
You are so, so silly. One can build an almost average offensive line without premium draft picks, and then build from there.–Joe
If this is truly how you feel, then I applaud you, but for some reason I don’t believe you. I think if we don’t take Winston first you’ll throw a tantrum like you did after we didn’t take Manziel. Then after that, you will ramp up your effort to write more anti- L&L articles because you’re insanely mad, with again almost 90% of your offseason articles leaning on the negative side.
Joe reminds me of a large predatory fish. Just throw something real shiny in the water and Joe will bite totally disregarding the risk of being caught. If we had taken Manziel he would still be the fifth best QB in our division and there maybe no doubt at this point that we would already own the #1 pick in the upcoming draft. Without the O-line to protect how can anyone expect a rookie QB to save the day, no matter how talented they may be?
It’s really a good way to ruin a QB prospect by throwing them to the wolves without some form of protection. Fear can change the way a rookie QB will develop in the future regardless of their athletic prowess. Joes argument that O-lineman don’t score 80 yard TD’s by themselves is true but ridiculous. Because without them neither can the rest of the offense.

Once again, a Bucs opponent — Clay Matthews — is the Player of the Week. The Bucs have to be leading the lead in this category over the past several years.

You don” t sound like a loyal fan to me, Dave Pear.
DB55 likes your joke though which figures.
Sorry you don’t understand my sence of humor. That doesn’t”zit surprise me either.
Next time I’m just smack you with a pie in the face, the type of humor you understand.
December 24th, 2014 at 3:07 pm
ddneast,
“That doesn’t”zit surprise me either”.
Was that another joke?
If so, you are absolutely correct, I don’t understand your sense of humor.
You not only don’t seem to be a “real” fan, you sound a little off your rocker.
If you know what I mean.
A little ” Coo Coo for Cocoa Puffs”!
Oh yeah, by the way..it’s spelled sense not sence.
Get a dictionary.

I think you and I should chip in and pay for a freshman English class for dd. Do you SENsE that also? It’s is CHRISTMAS afterall.
“Mobile-friendly – sence. 1. This is how idiots spell sense, since they have no sense, they can’t fking spell it. 2. This misspelled word is …”
December 24th, 2014 at 3:11 pm
Dave
Great minds think alike. And it’s not autocorrect cuz he spelled it the same way the other day. Lmao
Reading is fundamental.
December 24th, 2014 at 3:15 pm
DB55,
I’m all for it. I think he’s mad though. He wants to throw a pie in my face.

And how is that working out? “The Rockstar” deserves a lot of blame for never drafting OL.
Great post bucrightoff. You are dead on.

Dammit, Lovie!
