Jameis Watch: Lockout Changed The Game

Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, national champion James Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon and Josh McCown.
It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback to wear No. 5 ever in the state of Florida.
Many, Joe included, point to how Jameis Winston typically plays in a pro-style set, which makes him more attractive as an NFL prospect because the learning curve won’t be as steep on the big stage. By contract, University of Oregon QB Marcus Mariota is playing in a spread offense and would have to transform.
Former safety Charles Davis, seen often as a FOX college football analyst and on NFL Network, made a great counterpoint today on CBS Sports Radio.
He agreed Winston is more suited to the pro game right now and is a better NFL prospect than Mariota, as it relates to instant success. However, Davis talked about how the 2011 lockout changed the approach in the NFL.
Davis said incorporating college concepts that were familiar to 2011 rookies Cam Newton and Andy Dalton could not be shunned by their NFL offensive coordinators. It was a matter of urgency, Davis said. There was just no time to teach Newton and Dalton,with players reporting to work in late July, post-lockout. So there was a lot of college football in those Panthers and Bengals offenses.
Both went on to stellar rookie seasons that included Pro Bowl appearances.
Davis said it was a game-changer season that paves an easier path for Mariota.
Regardless, this further illustrates just how important it is for the Bucs to have the No. 1 overall pick, not No. 2, so they can pick an offensive coordinator that exactly suits their choice of quarterback.

Three years later defenses has caught up to every single option QB in league and Andy Dalton plays from the pocket. Charles Davis is a Pac-12 guy simply building up his guy without a solid foundation.
Mariota is RG3 without the cannon arm.

Agreed Joe, that the OC will make a difference. Knowing Lovieball though we won’t draft a QB. Lovie doesn’t like scoring points. Saints, Green Bay, Patriots, or Denver who run spread offense can take Mariota and we can watch him do very well on Sundays.

These are the types of interactions that NFL scouts watch intently when evaluating quarterbacks, for whom intangibles such as leadership and attitude are integral to success (ahem, Jay Cutler). Winston’s rah-rah innocence of 2013 has given way to a diva-type petulance that has gone unchecked by Fisher, Florida State, the ACC and the NCAA.
It is too late to correct that disruptive behavior in college. Soon it will be up to an NFL team. Can Jameis Winston be reined in? Will his personality mature to match his undeniable ability, or will he become one of those high picks that haunt a franchise? It’s going to be the most fascinating NFL case study in years.”

I keep hearing people say that mariota is like rodgers but when I hear people say that Winston is like brady many say no with conviction, don’t understand it. They say that mariota has a better completion percentage to INT ratio while Winston is a turnover waiting to happen. 1st: if mariota throws more short passes than long and they are caught that increases com%. Mariota is a safe thrower who will run before throwing a pass down field into a tight window (alex smith, kyle orton). When Evans is open down the field and Mariota is running outside and does not throw it and ends up with less than a 1000yrds next season while he will get a 1000yrds with scrub McCown you’re gonna have problems.
When the Bucs need to drive down the field to score the game tieing or winning field goal and the opposing defense is spying him and bottleing up the pocket forcing him to throw you know like the Bengals did Manning last night or the Bucs did rodgers sunday or how seattle does every running QB with 1:05 on the clock and one time out. Short passes to pad the stats won’t do it and then the people who clamored for mariota will wonder why the Bucs defense couldn’t do more.

When the Bucs pick an OC who will tailor the offense to fit mariota but a defender hits him in the legs going out of bounds or before he slides and he has to leave the game. But there is no backup who can run this system like mariota can then the Bucs are screwed. When mariota realizes that he cannot run so much and must throw down field more than he is use too then you’ll get int’s causing the defense to get back on the field killing all momentum. Like Bridgewater is leading the vikings with nothing on offense or like Carr is leading the RAIDERS with nothing on offense and like Winston will lead the titans to a better record excuses will be made for mariota’s failure. Even with the 7th best defense in the conference, an improved o-line, weapons on offense and much improved special teams. But it’ll be the coaching right! Arians could fix it, kelly could fix it, abcd could fix it is all joe buc readers will be typing.

Stop lying to yourselves and admit that Winston is the better QB and stop projecting your animosity towards him to justify your mariota love. You will want a J. Winston who will be angry that so many people doubted him because of alleged allegations and want to prove everyone wrong. You will want a Winston who will inspire the offense to fight for that extra yard. You will want a Winston who will rally the team around him to protect him and embrace being the bad guy and put new meaning to “fire them cannons” or “skullz and swords”. The only mean team on the field in the NFC South with all of these finesse offenses. MNF fans will tune in to watch the Bucs get manhandled but instead watch them punish the other team and celebrate afterward and give short interviews after the game an “US AGAINST THE WORLD MENTALITY”

People are mad that McCoy picks up an opponent now but soon will McCoy crushes a QB and David lays a bone jarring hit on someone or McDougled comes up and puts the wood on a runningback or hits the receiver who catches the ball in the soft spot of the zone. Then they’ll put their hand out to pick them up and the opponent won’t have it. Doing nothing but making the Bucs D play harder. I think we should all act like most of us don’t live in Florida. I suspect that if we eliminated Gator and Seminole fans from this discussion the results would be much different. In addition most of us have watched Winston play much more than Mariota. That is why I rely on the draft experts. They are not right all of the time, they know more than most of us because they have seen both guys play. This is a very important pick, it will affect our franchise for the next 5 years or more. The pick is too important to rely on local knowledge or biases. I am for Mariota because about 70% of the experts are.

You can’t run read option every play but it is still very effective if used in smaller doses…and besides that, it is used to some degree in most offenses in the NFL. Even Peyton Manning lines up in the pistol formation and hands the ball off out of it a good amount of times per game.
Mariota being so good at read option means that other teams have more to prepare for, the read option plays and the regular plays. It’s not a bad thing… BTW, Mariota has a plenty strong arm and his mechanics, height, and frame are WAY better than RG3’s.

Two overhyped QB’s who will both struggle their first two or thre year with a pro style offense If the Bucs get either one and start him, you are looking at two more losing seasons unless they get a better QB than McCown in free agency and start him.

Made my point anyone disagrees it’s your opinion, go with the “experts” if you want, no problem. Mariota in a dome could showcase his speed and be dangerous. Mariota in Tampa on grass won’t look so fast just my opinion and i’m not an FSU alum (ASU by the way) and have rooted for the Chicago Bears since I was a toddler. Only started rooting for the Bucs when Lovie came over there. Maybe Mariota could be good there but I would rather the Bucs select Winston but he’s damaged goods in this climate and probably won’t get selected.

Look at those numbers and tell me Mariota’s stats aren’t padded by the system. I have watched a lot of UO football this year. Mariota is good little player at the college game. He will not have success at the NFL level.

Probably more worthy of examination than the way-off-the-field stuff if you are a head coach or an OC. part of me says “that sounds like stuff a WR would do and get criticized for”, and the other part of me says “that sounds like stuff Philip Rivers would do and get praised for”.

Mariota won the Heisman so that means far and beyond, right? Obviously Dixon wasn’t good enough to win it. Also, Dixon was a 5th round pick in the draft. Mariota is projected #1. That is a huge difference. I mean I guess if you want you can say a #1 pick is the same as a 5th rounder, but I wouldn’t.
Also, how are you going to say don’t google a players stats and say which is better when you just did that? You weren’t making a point about it you were saying Mariota will not be good because of these stats by other Oregon QBs. You can do that. Mariota is a completely different player than those guys are. Mariota and Winston are the top 2 QBs in this years draft. They both have faults and they both are really great at different things. I just like Mariota better than I do Winston. If Winston would have had a year like he did last year I would agree he is the kid, but he has regressed. I think he should stay another year. Also, I think he will stay anyways to play baseball.

@Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says: I agree with you, newbucsfan can’t be watching many of Mariotas games. He has 668 career rushing yards, hardly a guy who tucks the ball and runs all the time. And one more thing I want to say, 68% completion percentage, 38 touchdowns and 2 interceptions, I’ve seen Winston throw three picks in the first half of a game. Winston will be a good NFL quarteback, I just think Mariota will be better.

BOTH of these QB’s have talent! Both are tremendous prospects.
BOTH are worth a gamble with the pick we have.
Trying to tear down either of these QB’s does not make your guy look better. Makes you look biased and a bit desperate. It’s widely reported that Jameis has off field issues that concern NFL brass. They’ll get to the bottom during the draft process and Jameis will get the chance to put his best foot forward.
It’s possible that BOTH Jameis and Marcus will succeed on their own terms with their own special skill set as NFL QB’s. It could be that trying to separate them would be like asking whose better? Aaron Rodgers or Ben Rothlesberger. Wow! They’re both great but they have different styles.
And you don’t make Rodgers look better by putting down Big Ben’s style or vice versa. And it’s the same with Jameis and Marcus.
Roll the dice and go for it!!! Pick one of the Heismans.

Skyline, the people who want Mariota point to his completion percentage, TD/INT ratio, and that he’s never offended their delicate sensibilities by saying naughty uh-oh boo boo words.
The people who favor Winston point to his size and arm strength, ability to stand in the pocket and make a tough throw and his football IQ — not his stats (which by the way are still fantastic)
If it’s as easy as googling the stats and comparing then why do NFL teams even employ scouts? Just look at the stats, right?

I’m joining the darkside. Even though I doubt Lovie takes him, I’d rather draft Jameis than Mariota. Running QBs are what they are, whatever OC we get is going to have to tailor his offense to Mariota. And the first year Mariota might do well. But once teams have film on these running QBs, they all get figured out. A pro style QB is what we need. Jameis is a moron but I think he’s a better NFL QB than Mariota.
Also if you want Jameis, pray for a win Sunday. If Mariota is off the board #2, Jameis is much more likely. But Lovie will not take Jameis ahead of Mariota. Mariota and Lovie can go to Sunday School together; Jameis and Lovie at Publix? I doubt it.

I don’t care what his GPA is, most athletes are led by the hand through their collegiate career these days.
There was a great story on Real Sports about what actually gets taught to student athletes these days. One class simply consisted of the ‘professor’ holding up cards with a single letter on it, asking the student what sounds it makes.. In college! One kid said he wanted to learn to read so that he could read about himself online.
Of course this isn’t every athlete in the school programs, but it’s a very large amount, and especially in the basketball and football programs.

I’m amazed at everyone calling for Winston. I’m smart enough to know I don’t know more than the experts. It’s not even close among them, mariota big time. And for those citing the pr style offense argument, we got a good look this year. 17 picks. If FSU played in a stronger conference they would have not come back late in as many games. They would have won about 8 games and would be playing in the who cares bowl this weekend. Take away the “winner” arguement and there is little that is special about Winston. And those of you who think he can suck in the first half and wake up and win in the second half in the nfl, you’re crazy.

I defend Mariota by his play not stats. He throws from the pocket more often than not. People just see highlights of when he runs and automatically assume he runs all the time, which he doesn’t. Mariota has strong arm as well and is the same size as Winston. Mariota is shy maybe 10-15 lbs, which isn’t very much.
Interesting piece in ESPN magazine on sizing up the two QBs.
Completed throws from inside and outside the pocket.
Mariota
Inside – 72%
Outside – 51%
Winston
Inside – 66%
Outside – 58%
Both of these QBs are very comparable. Like I said before….if Winston was playing like he did last year he would be #1 no doubt about it, however, he appears to have regressed in his decision making and his throwing. Mariota on the other hand has progressed from last year. I’m sure both of these QBs will kick the Heisman curse trend, but I prefer Mariota for his throwing and mobility.
We can certainly get an idea for which one we will go after once we hire an OC.

St Pete, I love you man and know you’re trying to play it down the middle. For the record, I don’t think either are worth the 1st overall pick. To me, the middle of the first round sounds about right. If we are going to gamble, it has to be mariota. Imo Winston is the next manziel and if we weren’t in Florida, few of our friends on this site would be saying we should take him. Unfortunately, there is huge homer bias at work here. It is similar to how many of the Texan fans were pining for manziel. The Texans wisely resisted. I hope the bucs are equally wise.

I’m interested to see how Mariota performs against FL State and possibly Alabama. I expect him to be in for a rude awakening facing that level of competition. Both teams have athletes fully capable of locking down his #1 WR and forcing him to either read the coverage or run. If he performs like a heisman trophy winner against these teams then I might potentially change my view on whether I think he’d be successful in the nfl or not.

I’d be interested to see how Winston reads a 3-3-5 defense.
“The Arizona 3-3-5, on first glance at the game film uses their defense in a multitude of looks. I saw 3-4, 4-2-5, 3-5, and 4-3 looks used on various possessions. What this does is it confuses offensive lines and their protection schemes. The Arizona defense can and will bring pressure from anywhere, which when combined with a stunting defensive line, can confuse offensive lineman on their blocking assignments, leading to sacks, negative plays and whatnot.”

Love the debate you guys have going, not an FSUfan at all, the Lovie picked OC will make a difference, I have not heard any of the experts say don’t take Winston because of talent, only his off-field behavior. What I have heard them say, this guy can read read defenses, he can make throws in tight windows, he may not be overly athletic, but mobile enough. I do remember his first college game against Pitt, did he throw about 80%(exaggerating), but he was impressive. Lovie may shy away, but it will be a mistake. BTW, can’t believe Josh Freeman couldn’t get picked up by the Browns, lol

Winston is the better NFL prospect. Size, strength, great arm strength, fearless with a gunslinger’s mentality, big leg up on reading defenses, pocket passer first – yet plenty mobile and can run for 1st downs or buy time with his feet to make pass plays downfield. @Eric – I’m not on either side of this debate but bring up a college athlete’s gpa, especially at a place like Florida state, is really just irrelevant. If you honestly think that he’s turned in a paper that he’s authored since the fifth grade, you’re crazier than I am

If you do a bit of research you will find that Winston took advanced placement classes in high school and graduated with a 4.0. His vice principle and classmates say he was an excellent student.
Perhaps that is better evidence than the 30 second interview after the kid won the championship game?
Often the stereotype doesnt fit the prrson. Which is why they are an ugly thing.
