Joe would like to thank Josh McCown for making a postgame point today that Joe’s made for months:
The Bucs could use another offensive coach.
One stunning happening this season was Lovie Smith’s unwillingness to hire a coach or consultant to help fill the void of former offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford.
The Bucs lost their offensive mind, their artist, a guy who was poised to work 80 hours a week on the offense, yet Lovie didn’t find it worthwhile to hire another body to help out.
Why?
Would it have hurt to bring in Kevin Gilbride or Chan Gailey for a few weeks to study film and work with Arroyo?
There are plenty of other seasoned, retired offensive minds out there. Marty Schottenheimer, anyone?
Heck, Chucky sits in his Tampa office watching film a couple of days a week. Maybe even just a quarterbacks coach with a load of NFL experience. Mike Sullivan’s not working. Surely, Lovie had some connections, or could have tapped his connections.
But no, Lovie was content to dump more work on his offensive assistants and hand the offense over to Marcus Arroyo, a 34-year-old with no NFL experience.
And what about Lovie himself? Why didn’t he slide over and work nearly full-time with his defense? Just last week, Lavonte David said Leslie Frazier was calling the shots on defense.
McCown passionately lamented the loss of Tedford and its significance and talked about how the offensive staff was left shorthanded.
“Just another person can help,” McCown said. “When everyone’s workload gets split, it makes it tough. [Offensive coaches] have never made an excuse, but the reality is when that happens, it’s hard to be at your best.”

McClown runs the OFFENSE on the field. Why the PHUK doesn’t he audible out of some plays. The dinosaur needs to retire and Arroyo will never coach again.

Not if it’s another Warhop. I still remain unconvinced that Tedford himself would have made that much of a difference.
Perhaps if Tedford had been here he would have had the credentials to tell Lovie to stick it and call his own game.
Lovie’s styles is a setup to lose close games. His view of offense as a four letter word simply handicaps and 2014 NFL team.
Hey I got it Lovie. Bring in Ga. Tech’s Paul Johnson. Why not run the triple option you freaking dinosaur.
Dungy ball is dead. The NFL powers hate it and they’ve written rules to stop it. Dean Smith had to drop his four corners strategy when the NCAA adopted a shot clock. The NFL has adopted rules in the passing game, and add in the concussion fears and Dungy ball makes as much sense as a college basketball coach still trying to run the four corner.

Not to make excuses….but it seems to me they expected Tedford back after a couple of weeks….then…perhaps later and by the time they parted ways….it was perhaps too late..
Regardless, it’s been a disaster….Warhop should be gone Sunday after the game….perhaps at halftime….

The bucs are playing for Draft position. It is so freaking obvious.
I wish I was a fan of any other team besides the Bucs.

Even if we win next week…we may pick 2nd….and even if we lose….we may pick 2nd…..nevertheless….is Mariota is gone when we pick….I don’t see Lovie & Licht pulling the trigger on Winston…..if we can trade down…(less likely at #2) we should….and I wouldn’t even mind trading down again….we need lots of picks….lets get some younger help on the O line….perhaps a MLB, DE…..maybe a QB other than Winston

Lovie doesn’t know sh*t about an NFL offense, that’s why he hasn’t personally been involved.

the whole coaching staff should be fired January 1st.
throw a lot of money at either tony dungy or jon gruden and give them complete control to be head coach and also GM(if they want it). this is the 3rd bad coach in a row.
Raheem, schiano and now lovie. I don’t think drafting a top QB in the draft will change things. look at Jacksonville and blake bortels. they lose every week. the JAX stadium on the espn highlights film is always 1/2 empty.

I don’t think you can classify Arroyo as the OC he is the QB coach and play caller. The Offense according to Lovie is by committee, therefore you have no OC and no offensive system just a bunch of opinions. You have to have one person to be in charge of the offense and let them run their system. Arroyo, I agree, doesn’t have the experience to have a system that works in the NFL. Lovie needs an experienced OC with a proven system and playbook and LEAVE HIM ALONE and let his system work. Until that happens you have no offense. Yar has spoken!

UFC…you don’t think we could snatch defeat out of the only thing that would make the off season extremely interesting? I’ll sleep better knowing that we can’t find a way to beat a disheartened NO team and end up without being able to draft one of the two best QB’s.

Excuse me, but I told you that Lovie would coach exactly like this before the first press conference….saw it in Chicago for years.
I just hope Licht ends up being a good GM………..with a good GM, you don’t make the kinds of mistakes we have made the last decade.

Lovie is that person driving in the passing lane below the speed limit that we all hate because he is either arrogant or to stubborn to move over. Lovie please move over and retire.We all know the offense is the worst ever,but you are smoking crack if you think the cover two will ever be relevant again with all the new rules in the NFL.The Packers beat Chicago eight out of ten times with Rogers as the QB against a Lovie coached cover two defense.

We can not fire Lovie. The media and his supporters will not tolerate such negative views of their beloved leader. His past success gives him immunity. Fans need to to have patience accepting losing and failure.True fans can see that we are on the verge. Our own eyes and mind are deceiving us. Lovie is actually the best head coaches in the NFL.The Bucs and Lovie deserve each other.

The fact that we DIDNT bring in another offensive coordinator makes it blatantly obvious we are tanking on purpose. Next year’s job will be an offensive coordinators dream bc it has nowhere to go but up bc the bar is set so low. Make no mistake, thatvis THE worst oline in the league.

Lovie is either tanking for the #1 overall or he is a total moron. There is no way Arroyo should have been left to run the offense by himself. Would this be allowed to happen anywhere else in the NFL? I doubt it? The Glazers should realize that the stadium is going to be empty of all fans but those of the opposing team next season thanks to Lovie, Licht and Arroyo; I hope they are happy……

Depends on the Glazers. if they call Lovie in and tell him he has failed totally on the offensive side of the ball, tell him all of the guys he brought in were expensive failures and then give him a choice.
Lovie needs to give up all personnel decisions, including the draft, and Licht becomes a TRUE GM. Licht and the Glazers will hire the new OC and give him a lot of autonomy including the call on whether we select a QB first or rebuild our offensive line first. I want an expert OC making that call along with Licht.
I think they could handle this behind closed doors so as to not totally neuter Lovie in front of the fans and players. They also need to tell Lovie that “Dungyball” is dead. They fired Tony for boring teams even though they won a lot games. It’s 2014 not 2004. The rules and game have obviously passed Lovie by and the Glazers need to let Lovie know he’s a caretaker.

Yeah Dave, Im too young to remember that expansion team, butvI do remember the Texans expansion team and how David Carr was a sitting duck. And I remember actually feeling sorry for him much the same way I feel sorry for McCown. The Texans drafted Boselli and another couple expensive veteran linemen who all played horribly and they never addressed the line early in the draft. All the top.teams have 2-3 1st rounders on the oline. That’s always going to be the magic formula.

Yeah Matt, no one will really know how good David Carr could have been behind a decent O-line. I suspect that if the Bucs draft a qb first overall this spring that he could face the same issues as Carr. Only way to build an OL is through the draft as no one is going to let good Tackles go via free agency or a trade unless they are near the end of their career like Mankins. I thought that the OL in 2013 was bad with Penn, Zuttah, Joseph, Larsen etc…. but if the Bucs had them this season a good chance the team would actually still be in the playoff conversation, albeit with 6 or 7 wins but that is a marked improvement over 2….
BucFansince’76: I think Lovie merits a pink slip but doubt if the kid Glazers want 3 head coaches on salary at once. They could force Lovie to clean house though and it could be more than just Arroyo, maybe they go after the personnel evaluators too like Licht and his scouts and director of player development and bring in someone to answer to them not Lovie. A great Chef can make anything good as long as he gets to shop for the ingredients as Bill Parcells used to tell the Cowboys and the Pats but a decent cook can only make it good if given a recipe and quality ingredients and is not allowed to dabble outside the kitchen shopping for stuff. Lovie is not a master chef type of coach, more like a fry cook kind of coach who might make the product decent if someone else buys the groceries and he is given simple instructions to follow; I think this season and the previous offseason proves that………

Mark- lol couldn’t agree more. Cutler acts like a spoiled kid, he’s a prick. That last interview was so awesome. McCown could go 0 for his next 20 and reporters would still be therecon that 21st loss asking him questions bc McCown is a man and he owns up.and treats everyone in there with respect.
Im sorry to take over this thread with this conspiracy talk about us tanking but it is blatantly obvious. I think the NFL and media talking heads will talk about implementing an NBAlike lottery after we look like a completely different team next year and crystal clear hindsight shows that we tanked.

I’m not sure why you’d want lovie to get involved in the offense. Judging by what matt forte had to say about his time in Chicago, it sounded like he wasn’t involved in the offensive game at all. Would you want someone meddling with things who doesn’t know what he’s doing? Arroyo is bad. He’s real, real bad. But sending someone out there that doesn’t havea grasp on how offenses run isn’t going to help. Arroyo may not be creative and he may not be a tactician, but having lovie get involved will only make it worse. I prefer it this way. Lovie is concentrating on the defense getting stronger and being the core of the team for next year. There’s no saving the offense this year. He’ll leave that for the offseason. The defense is getting better and better and that’s the momentum that we need going in to next season. Then we can couple it with the overhauled offense that will actually have a grown up in charge who knows what is supposed to look like

Really Joe, there’s about a million fired coaches with offensive coordinator experience and somehow you lump the one guy with absolutely no experience running an offense in there? Schottenheimer made his way up as an LB coach, then defensive coordinator, then head coach…he was never ALLOWED on the offensive side of the ball. You should’ve cited Dungy and Bill Cowher while you were at it.

The fact that Lovie didn’t bother hiring another OC or someone to help the obviously overwhelmed Arroyo is a serious lapse in leadership and judgement on Lovie’s part. Lovie should be fired but I’m sure he won’t. Really nervous to see if he will get an OC after the season or stick with Arroyo. You just can’t tell.
