Did Jeff Tedford step aside to let his close friend Marcus Arroyo continue in his dream job?
This summer, Lovie Smith shared that Aaron Rodgers strongly referred former Bucs offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford to him with a powerful endorsement.
Of course, Joe asked Rodgers about Tedford, following the Packers’ beating of the Bucs today.
Tedford coached Rodgers at the University of California, and Tedford had been open about their close relationship.
This afternoon, Rodgers told Joe that Tedford walked away from the Bucs, he believes, because he didn’t want to move back in on Marcus Arroyo’s turf.
“I’m happy for Jeff that he’s healthy now. Him and I are close friends, and the NFL was an opportunity he was looking forward to. But because he had to be away from the team, I think, you know, he felt like he didn’t want to step back in and take somebody’s job,” Rodgers said.
“Jeff is head coaching material. He’s got that personality to be able to inspire young men and men. And I’m excited for him for the opportunity up in Canada.”
So there you have it. Rodgers seems to think his good friend Tedford didn’t want to snatch the reigns of the Bucs offense from Arroyo, his close friend and understudy.

Whatever. If you have decent NFL personnel, you should be able to line up in a Wing-T and score more points than the Bucs have this season.

I understand and even admire Rodgers loyalty to is old coach. And he may be right that Tedford didn’t wish to displace Arroyo.
Problem for me is that Tedford and Lovie supposedly bonded during their year away from the game. If Tedford signed off on Lovies’ idea of NFL football I lose respect for Tedford. If Tedford was that smart he would have realized the Arroyo was in over his head and that indeed coming back would have actually been the charitable thing to do FOR Arroyo. By not coming back to face the music of this horrid offense Tedford has ruined poor Arroyo’s career or at minimum set it back dramatically.
Personally I believe Tedford would have sucked this year as well. How can any self respecting OC sign off on any Lovie idea about football.
Lovie is probably a great DC. His demeanor is perfect for an HC. His creativity and courage to try and WIN a game instead of playing to not lose and hope your defense and FG kicker win enough for you is just outdated in 2014.
The rules have changed. Dungyball is just as outdated now as running a triple option attack. The game has been tilted dramtically against defense and towards the passsing game. Until Lovie recognizes and accepts that fact he’ll continue to suck as a HC. And there’s no way to sugar coat this year. Lovie sucked!!!

It probably would’ve helped Arroyo’s career had Tedord come back in and taken the reigns. He went from bad college offensive coordinator, to underqualified NFL QB coach, to completely inept NFL offensive coordinator.
I think no matter how bad this offense is, in the long run, it will make Arroyo a better coach and probably help boost his resume en route to his next stop… assuming he doesn’t come back as a QBs coach for the Bucs.

Brandon is right. The way I look at it is that Tedford (for whatever reasons) chose not to come back and help the Bucs and his protege Arroyo. The debacle that ensued with the Bucs floundering offense now will be placed on Tedford and can be used a a shioled by L&L when Black Monday comes next week…. Arroyo is now a laughing stock in the NFL and the Buc franchise not much better as this was allowed to happen. Tell me, would this ever be allowed to happen at a franchise like New England, Dallas, Pittsburgh, Green Bay, Seattle, etc??? The answer is no and someone has to take the blame: either the Glazers for trusting L&L or L&L themselves…. The fact that tedford is now completely heal;thy and off coaching the CFL makes this look all the worst as if Tedford was a quitter and/or the Bucs did not want his help and just wanted the offense to wilt under the overmanned Arroyo. The fact that the OL is the worst since the expansion year of ’76 should not be overlooked either. I would not be surprised if L&L and the Glazers are actually glad for the failed Arroyo experiment as it deflects attention from the fact that the OL FA acquisitions as well as the signing of McNown himself were all epic fails and demand accountability… Arroyo a big part of the problem but so was talent evaluation which is Licht’s issue not Arroyo’s….

It sounds like Aaron Rodgers was prepared for that question, and just gave the diplomatic safe answer. I doubt seriously if Arroyo would have been upset if Tedford returned.

I too concur with most of what StPeteBuc wrote; however I still think there’s more to the story that the public hasn’t been told.
Bottom Line? As a Charter Season Ticket Holder, this is the first time in 38 years that I have actually lost some interest in my beloved Buccaneers. We are missing so many pieces; the direction that Lovie and Licht have taken this team I don’t believe will ever lead to a championship caliber team, and I think we are no less than five years away from “Righting” the ship, assuming that we get the right personnel here in Tampa to do the “Righting”. In short, I’ve lost faith in L&L, and this whole Tedford debacle is but one small sliver of the reasoning as to why.
