“On The Verge” Of What?

Lovie Smith proudly uttered the stunning quote above on Monday. It was painful and confusing for Joe to hear. Is Lovie seeing something Joe and Bucs fans everywhere are not?
Joe really doesn’t get the “on the verge” assessment.
The Bucs were non-competitive today for the fourth time this season, twice in the past three weeks. And it was no surprise.
That’s not “on the verge.” Perhaps Lovie really was talking about the NFL Draft?
What most disturbs Joe is the Bucs don’t look like an angry, violent, hungry football team. They don’t look they’re building anything going into next season.
At least Raheem Morris won two of his last three in the rebuilding year of 2009.

Fire him, blow it up except the young guys and get real football people in here. This team is so far away it needs to realize that Lovie can’t get us anywhere and there is no shot we’ll ever win consistently under him. He’s poor at developing players and we need someone to build this roster from the ground up. Lovie isn’t the guy, we are a miracle win away from 1-15.

I’ll still back Lovie in saying that we’re on the verge. The defense looked just fine. Sure, we could use a couple more talented players, along with our starters back from IR, but they did fine. We didn’t budge the football on offense. I’m surprised that the center was able to get his hand on the ball without it being slapped away. This loss was 100% on the offense, and I’d give 90% of that to the come l choke job by the qb and the line. Weak play and poor schemes all day long. Those are fixable things that this offseason can fix.

Ever think that by improving the offense during the draft you would actually be helpful to your beloved defense by giving them some quality time off the field? Does it have something to do not being able to successfully trade up to get Carr? Inquiring beloved fans want to know.

He’s obviously talking about the defense. And he’s not totally wrong. Today our defense, sans Gerald McCoy, held the most explosive offensive attack to 20 points. And had an Impressive goal line stand. We would’ve had a chance to win, if not for the incompetent, man-child, crybaby, dipstick of quarterback. And the sieve of an O-line. We are on the verge, if we draft a franchise next year, and get some more meat up front, we will win more games, simple as that.

I disagree with the non competitive statement. Yes the offense was quite offensive. The defense however was something to be proud of. What else can you ask of them when they’re on the field for two thirds of the game against a team like the Packers? If anything we need a true offensive coach to come in and be granted the ability he needs to change the offense without Lovies input. Probably won’t happen.

The defense did look very decent against a monster of a QB. I’m really starting to believe in Frazier. We need a strong and competent character for an OC. Lovie is going to need to be truly hands-off on that side of the ball. We do NOT need a yes man in that position, and if Lovie refuses to loosen his grip, then yes, he should be fired.

I will defend the defense a little. Our defensive scheme is going to give up a lot of yards. It’s designed to bend but not break. Also, they are missing a bunch of key cogs. I was pretty impressed with them, considering.

I have no confidence in Lovie or the general manager and I do not understand why he continues to start Mcown and you cannot tell me he gives you the best chance to win.
This message goes out to the Glazers, how are you going to instill confidence to the fans that they will be better. I supported Lovie at the beginning of the year but now he is a horrible coach and has effectively made a very bad Schiano team even worse and has shown that neither him nor the gm cannot evaluate talent at all. I do not put the blame for the bad offense on Tedford leaving because Lovie could have easily brought in an interim offense coordinator to help run things. So this 2 win season is on Lovie.

I agree with Patrick’s take in terms of talent. But the coaching will still hold us back.
Let’s take a best case scenarioi. We take one of the Heismans first. Our 2nd will be like a late 1st round and we pick up a stud OT to match with Dotson whichever side they line up. We pick up a pass rusher. Then we draft a couple of guards in the hope that at least one of them works out.
The sticking point is still Lovie/Dungy. Lovie wants to play Dungy ball. That was freaking boring enough in the late 90’s and early oughts. It’s just not smart anymore. The NFL wants an offensive game and have changed the rules making the defense first, pound the rock coaches dinosaurs.
As many of you have said…what self respecting OC would want to work for Dungy or Lovie…that’s why you get jokes like Clyde Christiansen and Marcus Arroyo. And why do we give Tedford so much benefit of the doubt. I’m sorry for his illness, no personal ill will on my part, but I suspect Tedford would have sucked as well. If he and Lovie agreed on so much then Tedford has to suck at offense.
Lovie IS the problem. At least for now. He’s a class act. Players like and respect him. If he could change with the times and rules and get an actual NFL quality OC and give him one of the Heiman’s to work with we could become good very quickly.
it’s not out of the realm of reality to at least reach the playoffs next year with either Jameis or Marcus. Remember we’re talking the NFC South. The Falcons are in shambles and ready to fire their GM and coach. The Saints have run aground and there’s even talk Sean Payton is ready to move on.
That leaves the stinking Panthers. We can beat them even with a rookie QB if we had an OC that could game plan and call a decent game and our defense continues it’s obvious improvement.

The Head Coach is responsible for the entire team, not just half of it. Yes, the defense is improving, but in 16 weeks Lovie has sat by and let the offense get worse.
16 weeks of ignoring the biggest problem on the team. This man has to go next Monday. There is no justification for keeping him.

I hate to break it to you, but Tampa will never have winning football if they keep firing coaches after 1-2 years. You have to be willing to sit through the hard times and gain stability.
Otherwise, players will NEVER buy into a head coach, because they will figure he’ll be gone in a year or so.

If we could score points we could win every game. But even a good OC & QB don’t guarantee that every week. What we are guaranteed next year, Buc fans, is that if a game or crucial decision of any consequence comes down to the head coach, we are guaranteed to lose that battle. I’m sorry, I don’t believe in things that aren’t real! The defense looks much improved, yes, but it’s the whole philosophy of Tampa2. Our team sucks so bad and any excuse you want to make can’t change the fact that it all falls on Lovie. He has been a complete and total FAIL this year. Major, big time, FAIL.

Mcown loses another one. This guy thinks he can hold the ball forever. He doesnt even know his protections to keep himself upright and doesnt audible out of obvious blitzes. When he lucks out with a decent fit then he overthrows wide open receivers. The defense is very legit.
If you dont see progress then you have to trust the coaches and stop whining all the time or learn the game at least.

Because us drafting a QB has a chance of happening. Firing Lovie isn’t going to happen, period. It’s great to write about what could or should happen, but there has to at least have a possibility of it happening. Lovie isn’t going to get fired, period. Does he deserve to based off of this year – absolutely. However, this is obviously a long term project. There’s no point in playing coaching carousel. Vince Lombardi couldn’t take this team anywhere.

All is not lost yet. Yes the season has been a total disaster.
Depends on what the Glazers do next. If they bring in L&L and tell them they’ve lost confidence in Lovie and they FORCE him to draft one of the Heismans and then tell Licht to shop for the best OC they can find to develop him and the rest of the offense I can honestly see this team getting to the playoffs next year.
Depends on how much power the Glazers are willing to take from Lovie. They should tell him he’s not in charge of this years draft, and he’s not going to be calling the offensive shots at all. FORCE him to accept an OC with the authority to run an exciting open offense, not an offense designed not so much to win but simply to avoid losing.
What could Lovie do if the Glazers did that behind closed door without embarrassing him publicly. Quit? That works for everybody. We could use the money he’d give up to hire a coach who doesn’t consider offense a four letter word.

The Bucs were in the game for three + quarters. The offense is the big problem. The team needs an offensive coordinator, QB and an offensive line. The team absolutely needs a QB but it won’t do much good without a line. It’s time to spend early round draft picks to shore up the line.

But Hawaiian you’ll notice almost all our best players this season were here last year and most of the players Lovie has brought in have not been all that great. It was that way in Chicago, he made the playoffs two of the first three years and missed five of the last six, which is no coincidence as the team has more Lovie drafted and developed players. I just don’t see him being a guy who will build us to be competitive for the long term. If it’s all about QB Lovie has nothing to do with it. I’d rather have an offensive coach developing a #1 pick QB.

@LightningBuc – the defense bent but didn’t break. Look at the time of possession. The defense was on the field the whole game. They had an bunch of big stops. They gave upa td to eddie lacey, which I’d like to not have happen of course, and they gave one up when the offense gave the pack the ball on a super short field. That’s against the best qb in the game who is being talked about as the mvp this year. Yes, that’s a fine day. They can give up all the yards they want. They kept a high octane offense out of the end zone pretty well, considering how many chances the pack had to score

lovie is a veteran coach, and if he is as good as the media, and analysts say, well with his veteran defensive coordinator you would have think they could have, should have, at least won 5 games in a rebuilding year, but he promised us that it wasn’t a rebuilding year, and can only manage 2 wins in 15 games. with his experience I would have to say that is unacceptable. it would do no harm at all to fire this whole group, because after totally gutting the offensive line, as well as all the other hand picked players he signed on, they actually are going to have to do the same next season, because this group is not cutting it. and thus here we go again on another rebuild year. where we have to have new lineman on both sides of the ball. as well as another QB throwing the ball, so really what is the point to keep L&L . other than saving money there is not going to be any continuity anyway. and the glazers can write these checks everyday no problem. so with the first pick i would have a competent coach to go along with him because it is going to be a long rebuild without one. by the way can anyone on the bucs count past eleven

Nice to see at least one voice of reason. It is absurd to fire a coach and GM after one single season, especially considering the Tedford mess. This team is fighting and playing hard, they haven’t quit, something you can’t say the team didn’t do with Schiano, Morris, and even Gruden those last 4 games.
I think the knee jerk reactions to these losses is ridiculous. Their offense is terrible, an offseason with a new OC and more talent will make a world of a difference. Considering what we did on defense to one of the best offenses in the league, without our top defensive player (think about how we looked last time we didn’t have McCoy), and the fact that adding additional talent is inevitable, they will only improve.
Mariota at QB and Philbin or Lazor or Trestman or Carl Smith (QB coach of the Seahawks) or Ben McAdoo (OC for the Giants) or maybe even Pete Carmichael (he’s the OC for the Saints but doesn’t call plays) and suddenly this offense becomes formidable.
On a less depressing note, Mike Evans is 3 yards away from 100 and Jackson is only 9. When was the last time the Bucs had 2 1000 yard seasons at receiver? My guess is ZERO.

No, the worst we can be if we win next week is #3. That being said, if we manage to lose to the Saints, our strength of schedule advantage is significant enough that we are pretty much locked into #1 overall.

The dumpster fires known as the Browns and Redskins tell us it a GREAT idea to skip QB and go straight for the franchise LT.
BTW, quick, name Peyton Manning’s starting LT for the majority of last season… it wasn’t Ryan Clady…. Ken Clarke…yeah…who’s Brady’s LT right now? don’t pass on a possible franchise QB for OL..EVER!

Peyton and Brady have never had lines that come within a mile of this garbage. We can’t run so teams don’t even have to consider it. Teams don’t have to blitz because the line is so easy to beat straight up or with stunts. We have to draft Mariota simply because he can run as we can’t actually protect him. You’ll notice none of the best QBs are the running ones.

While I agree with HawaiianBuc, that firing Lovie (after one year) might unsettle some HC prospects, I won’t go so far as to say the Glazers “won’t” do it. They have done some very bold and unexpected things, in the past. After all the money Lovie asked them to spend, the high expectations that Lovie preached, and the results of this season, I believe the release of Lovie has (at the very least) crossed their minds.
When Lovie said “Except for three games this year, we’ve been in every one. So I think true football fans can see that we are on the verge.”, I believe he thinks that next year we will be ‘in’ all 16 games. We might even win a few of them. Even a blind squirrel…

I certainly take your points and used to feel like you. But now I’m willing to roll the dice on a Heisman at #!. My preference is Mariota because he doesn’t scare me off the field and I think he has more upside than Jameis. But I’m now ok with Jameis as well.
There are at least three franchise tackles in this draft if Peat comes out. Our second round pick is only one pick removed from the first round. If we take the Heisman we can still have our cake and eat it too. It’s not that big of a leap for us to trade the #33 pick for a mid round first rounder. Probably cost us another pick or two and we may have to give up a high pick in next year’s draft depending on how high we need to go.
But with Peat/Sherf/Duncan all considered franchise tackles we don’t have to use that #1 or even a #2 to get one of those three.
Many mock drafts have Leonard Williams going first or well up the board. That takes up a spot. I forget which LB but I remember one of them projected in the 1st round.
And so while I agree with your train of thought I think our high draft position and some clever dealing means we could get one of the Heismans AND a franchise LT in the same draft.

If I were the Glazers, after hearing that press conference, I would have called Lovie on his mobile and asked him to explain every statement he made in this presser.

Lovie is full of crap and he’s gotta go. Apathy doesn’t equate to winning. Does anyone really believe it will be different next year if he stays? They brought him in because they want to recreate the thrilling days of yesteryear. The Days of Dungy. Lovie is not Dungy.. he can never be Dungy and that’s fine. Let Lovie be Lovie, but be Lovie somewhere else. He can leave with his whole cast of characters and go back to the friggin Island of Misfit Toys.
