Trading Down For Nick Foles And Draft Picks

Ahh, you gotta love the modern media landscape.
On Thursday, Bucs beat writer Woody Cummings, of The Tampa Tribune, floated on Twitter that the Bucs trading down their premium, first-round, 2015 NFL Draft pick to the Eagles could be a sound move.
And right on cue, a notable Eagles beat writer wrote a story about it.
Here’s what Cummings asserted:

Eiliot Shorr-Parks, of NJ.com, likes the move for Philadelphia.
That certainly wouldn’t be a bad deal for the Eagles, who would jump up to the top spot from No. 20 (if they don’t make the playoffs) while only losing their second-round pick and quarterback Nick Foles. Considering some in the organization “soured” on Foles even before his injury, it is hard to imagine him being a deal breaker.
The fact that Foles is thought of so highly in this potential trade, however, might speak to how he is viewed outside of Philadelphia.
The suggested trade would seem to be a steal for the Eagles, at least according to what personnel executive from an NFC told NJ Advance Media.
“I’d want a one and two this year, two more ones and Shady (running back LeSean McCoy),” the executive said of any potential trade to go from a top-three selection to No. 20. “I mean look what Washington had to give up for RGIII. Look what Buffalo gave up last year to move a few spots for (Sammy) Watkins.”
Joe doesn’t like the Cummings proposal, primarily because Nick Foles is a free agent after next season. For that reason, at minimum, Joe would demand the Bucs get more from Philly. More in the ballpark of acceptable would be two No. 1 picks, Foles and a second-round pick.
Regardless, Joe would prefer the Bucs draft and groom their own franchise QB.
Playing along with the hypothetical, if the Bucs did land Foles, then his former Eagles quarterbacks coach, current Dolphins offensive coordinator Bill Lazor, would be an ideal choice to lead the Bucs offense in the post-Tedford-Arroyo era.

Puke. Terrible trade. Foles was quite pedestrian before he got hurt. Or how bout we just keep our pick and draft our own qb how about that?
In this scenario the eagles would be trading up to get mariotta anyway. Why not us just take him since they don’t believe in files pass. Trade has bust written all over it for us.

That’s insane. According to media reports, Foles was not playing that well this year before he got hurt.
Remember the 2013 draft with three OL and Dion Jordan going in the first four? None of them have made an impact. Bucs are “lucky” enough to be in line for a top when when you’ve two QBs that are consensus Top 5 picks.
They have to take one of these guys, warts and all.

So there’s a shocker an Eagles writer likes the idea of trading their 3rd round QB who gets called Napolean Dynamite for the Bucs #1 pick. No thanks we already have the better 3rd round QB nicknamed Napolean Dynamite currently on roster. Not Glennon’s fault Chip Kelly (a guy who is making Sanchez look like he might be an NFL worthy QB…an impressive feat) spurned Tampa.

Don’t want him. To me he’s basically another project. Why not get the franchise qb while we have a pick relative enough to get a possible stud for our team and build around him? You can’t build a team around Foles. He’s basically another Glennon with a little more talent. Mariotta and Winston are at least athletic enough to get out of trouble in the pocket.

Joe made the key point but because Foles is a free agent after the year he can’t be anything other than a throw in. 2 firsts and 2 seconds should be the minimum acceptable trade for the pick. Winston and Mariota aren’t Andrew Luck so if you can get a massive package for the pick you gotta do it. Team needs so much more to be competitive.

Pretty sure Cummings was drinking or snorting blow when he wrote that. It’s the same guy who thought Schiano would be back this year.
But getting Foles would be better than what we’ve got, have to say at least that is a positive. Need more picks to make that work though. Probably another 1 and 2 pick.

Agree with you Joe as well as Zam. I hear Gatrbuc as well.
The concept might have had merit if Cummings hadn’t given away the farm.
From the top pick to #20 is a MAJOR drop. Nick Foles? I’ve always looked at him as someone who has had a few good games in a high powered offense.
Foles has yet to prove himself as the real deal. I will concede he has proven that he may develop into the real deal.
And remember Matt Flynn? The Seahawks grabbed him as an upgrade to Tavaris Jackson. Think Foles as the obvious upgrade to MGM. Feel free to disagree with that assessment but one would have to believe that to pull the trigger. Then remember an unheralded 3rd round pick who coincidentally played with MGM in college, Russell Wilson came in and upset the apple cart.
I can easily see Foles coming in, looking “adequate” and then getting beat out by Connor Cook or Dak Prescott the following year.
I can’t believe Cummings, a writer I respect, would advocate for so little return.
Foles is still a gamble. He might just be a journeyman. He brings very little value to the deal other than being apparently better in Cummings eyes than Glennon. I’m not part of the MGMob. But I’m not part of the Foles mob either.
The ONLY reason to trade down is for MULTIPLE higher round draft picks because we believe our cupboard is so bare.
It’s not really that bare other than at the coaching position. We NEED a QB.
I”d go for Mariota…if we pick Jameis I’ll root for him and keep my fingers crossed he stays out of the new for off field.
But Nick freaking Foles. C’mon Man. Either a BOATLOAD of high picks like St. Louis got for RGIII or pull the trigger on one of the two Heisman’s and take our chances.
Again having the top pick produces a wonderful multiplier effect. First pick in the second round is not that far behind the 20th pick in the first…carry that all the way through the draft…our 3 rounder will be the equivalent of a late second rounder and so on.
We can get one of the Heismans and STILL pick up a great offensive lineman and have a good shot at finding a pass rusher…or get the pass rusher and then the OL.
Bottom line…we should be able to get one of the Heismans AND two other NFL quality players for the OL and DL.

I floated this idea out here a couple weeks ago without any knowledge of Foles record this year but definitely knowing he is better now than Michael Vick ever was.
Also said the Bucs would should at least get two first round picks and a second for the trade. Gatrbuc17 I agree wholeheartedly with you about this year’s QB crop.
Just because you have two top QB’s that have been over hyped by the media, that does’t make them worthy of being automatically worthy of a No. 1 pick. (See Josh Freeman, Mark Sanchez’ etc…)
People who want to draft them because they are rated the top two by the media (and that is all who is rating them) just show what hayseeds they really are.

Any trade with Philly would have to would have to include multiple 1st round picks plus players and additional picks. A trade would look like an exchange of 1st round picks this year, a first in 2016 and a 1st in 2017 plus Nick Foles and additional 2nd and 3rd round picks. A precedent was set by St. Louis and Washington in which I believe 7 total picks were involved. Roy Cummings must have been drunk when he came up with his scenario of a trade

I honestly think these journalists want clicks. Why does everyone always have us taking up other teams leftovers? Can we finally have our own face of the franchise , young QB whose jersey we can potentially retire? Why is that so hard to imagine? Every other franchise for the most part can point to at least one guy who is their former QB great. This all seems to happen when we are finally in the best position since Lord knows when to get someone to energize our franchise and bring hope, yet everyone talks about trading down or picking up some garbage QB that other teams do not care to keep around anymore. IMO- I’d rather have a proven Pro Bowl QB.
That struggled early on, because of the injuries to his interior Offensive line, and the lose of his deep threat(DJAX). Then a guy thats not proven. The boat load of picks are a major bonus.

I do not disagree with your post other than that cheap shot at Vick. I’m am not Michael Vick fan. He ran way to much for my taste but he WAS a good QB in his day.
We can express our opinions all day long and agree to disagree but one thing we can’t do is change the record or the scoreboard. There are many athletes/coaches I do not admire, personally perhaps, or the style in which they win (Tony Dungy) but you have to give them scoreboard. Tony Dungy won a SB so he has SCOREBOARD.
Michael Vick OWNS Nick Foles if you go to the scoreboard/record
In six seasons with the Falcons, he gained wide popularity for his performance on the field, and led the Falcons to the playoffs twice. During his tenure with Atlanta, Vick was selected to three Pro Bowls.
Get back to me when Foles gets to the playoffs and Pro Bowl.

Going into training camp, new head coach Chip Kelly announced that Foles would compete with Vick and newly drafted rookie Matt Barkley for the Eagles starting quarterback job in the 2013 season. Going into preseason, it became clear that the job was a 2-way battle between Foles and Vick. Foles played average during preseason while Vick would excel past him. On August 20, it was announced that Vick would start the season and Foles would be the backup.
And this is when Vick was old, over the hill and a shadow of his pro bowl days.

I am with Joe T. Way to much pain and suffering went into getting to the top of the draft to trade it for a QB that had 1 good year. By this time next year everyone will be back on these same boards asking why we did not draft a QB again and then others will be saying that we should wait again till the following year because they do not see Andrew Luck or Peyton Manning in the draft. And so will go the circle of buc life.

And that trade is exactly why the Bucs have no shot of getting that package. That the Redskins got so thoroughly torched by the trade will prevent other teams from even considering the package. The more realistic package is what Atlanta gave up to move up 21 spots from 27-6, 2 firsts and 2 seconds. Those picks plus possible cap relief (like dumping Michael Johnson on them) and cheap, solid players coming back (like Foles or Jordan Matthews) would be a pretty nice package.

St.petebucsgfan, you sound like an Eagles fan, not a Bucs fan, which further supports mt belief that many of the people who post out here are not really Bucs fans.
Vick is a running QB because he can’t read a defense to save his life. Like many of today’s QB’s he is a one read QB which is why the Bucs used to eat his lunch whenever they played him.
I won’t even talk about the character of someone who enjoys torturing, mistreating and watching man’s best friend fight to the death.

Take phillys 1st 2nd and 1 of their 3rd rounders and take Sanchez grab Lazor and let’s do something big we would be loaded with picks and can work on offense and defense problems with some fresh talent but let Lazor handle the offense picks lol maybe let McCown move to QB coach shoot even trade saints for a couple pick for Glennon and get a 3rd QB in draft. What we got to loose the best we’ll probably be this year is 2-14

LMAO I HATE all Philly teams but especially the stinking Flyers. The ONLY time I came near to fisticuffs at a sporting event was about ten years ago at a Lightning game. I had half season tickets it was the ONE game my wife couldn’t make it so I sold her ticket to a scalper. Big mistake for a Philadephia game.
And so I had to sit next to an obnoxious Philly fan. The WORST kind. The ones who leave Philly for our community and live here and still root againt US!!!
And this was when the Lightning sucked…like the Bucs now. This guy is running his yap all game…swilling the beer. And so finally in the third period with the Flyers up by several goals I turn to this guy and say…Dude you live HERE. Home is where the heart is. You come here to take up space on our highways, drink OUR water and breathe our air and then you cheer against us.
Ok I give you scoreboard on the ice. You can give me scoreboard where it really counts which is where would anybody rather live?
You don’t see thousands and thousands of Floridians bailing and moving to freaking Philadelphia now do you? If Philly was so great why do you all have to move here?
He got peoed…stood up…and ah the advantage of season tickets. Everybody knows all the folks around them. When he stood up about five guys around me stood up to face him. He sat the f back down. Hopefully he’s moved back to Philly who wants him here.
As I said I’m no fan of Vick from even before the dog fighting, because as you mention he’s too quick to run. He DID however get the Falcons to the NFC championship game as I recall.
I’ve conceded Foles MIGHT be the real deal. He has far too limited body of work to pronounce his value just yet.
Again I bring up the example of Matt Flynn.
Flynn was the backup to Aaron Rodgers when the Packers won Super Bowl XLV. On January 1, 2012, Flynn started the final game of the season against the Detroit Lions. He threw for 480 yards and 6 touchdowns in the 45-41 victory, both of which set single-game Green Bay Packers records.
Seattle thought they has stuck gold. Foles certainly has some highlights but no long body of work to confirm his NFL ability. Not saying he won’t be great, simply saying he hasn’t done enough yet for us to sign off on that lame deal Cummings proposed. More picks and I’d certainly consider it.

I stains corrected St. PeteBucsFan in regards to your allegiance. For some reason Flynn plays good in Green Bay but not very well anywhere else.
What I know about Foles is he is better than the last three QB’s who have stArted for the Bucs.
Doesn’t make him great, just a lot better than what we currently have.

Due to Foles’ limited experience, and recent run of far less success (did teams figure him out or the Eagles?), he is a tainted prospect, no way he is worth more than a late to mid 2nd rounder on his own. That being said, if the Bucs were to allow the Eagles to trade all the way up, it had better be for a Rams-Redskins type break the bank trade involving no less than 3 1st rounders (one this season and two the following seasons), and 2 2nd rounders and some change (Foles can be part of the change). Don’t forget, the Redskins traded up not as far as the Eagles would and they only got the #2 overall selection, not the #1.
The Bucs should rightly be able to acquire a king’s ransom for that pick.

I think you guys have lost perspective on the importance of this rare opportunity to draft a potential franchise QB. There is no upside to a Foles or Cutler – they have reached their peak under superior coaching. And look at the talent around Cutler, but he still can’t get the job done.
I know there are no guarantees in drafting a QB, but there is a LOT more potential upside. Look at what other teams do to try to have that elusive franchise QB: teams pay the likes of Cutler, Kapernick, hell even McCown, ridiculous money just to have a chance. They give up tons of draft picks (RG3), possibly setting their franchise back YEARS in the HOPE he is the one.
Now the Bucs are in prime position to draft a QB without having to give up anything, and you want to give that up? I realize we have a LOT of needs, but it starts with a franchise QB.

How stupid are you? No college QB is ready to play from day 1, stupid. They all have to be prepared first.
If you have the first pick and need a QB, you ALWAYS take the chance. The only other position worthy of the #1 pick is DT, and we don’t need one that bad.
Trading down is only acceptable under three conditions
1. We move down no more than 10 picks
2. We get 3 #1s or 2 #1s, a #2 (this year) and a starting calibre QB

Cummings’ tweet just shows how he is part of the reason the Tampa Tribune is a POS rag of a newspaper! There is nothing good about that deal, we would get screwed out of a top draft pick and in return, we get a system QB whose play is already falling off and will be a bust wherever he goes next!
