Lovie Knows “Exactly What We Need To Do Going Forward”

The Bucs’ leader says he has precise clarity

Your beloved Buccaneers are not only “on the verge,” as Lovie Smith said last night, Lovie and his ranking colleagues are supremely confident in their roster evaluation and what their next steps need to be.

Man, Lovie is one confident, calm leader.

One would never know he’s a head coach that couldn’t stop Derek Anderson and a Panthers offensive line laden with two rookies and a guy on the Bucs’ practice squad last year.

Speaking on the Buccaneers Radio Network last night on WDAE-AM 620, Lovie explained that injuries and other circumstances have accelerated the evaluation process.

“We’ve had to look at a lot of different guys on our football team. We feel like we know our roster right now, know exactly what we need to do going forward,” Lovie said. “But, again, we will win based on this foundation that we have right now in place.”

Joe knows many Bucs fans are scared by Lovie’s words. Even Joe is a bit.

How can Lovie know exactly what is needed going forward when he doesn’t even have an offensive coordinator, and radical change is likely coming to his offense?

Joe’s going to take a deep breath and hope the Bucs are ready for that radical offensive upheaval in 13 days, when the firing and hiring frenzy begins.

I’m not sure I doubt that he knows what we need, because I think we all know what we need: an OC, a special teams coach, a QB, an OL, a DE, and 2 new safeties. Of course knowing what you need and actually going out and getting it are 2 different things entirely.

  2. HawaiianBuc Says:

You could probably add a MLB, another CB, and another WR to that list too, but Rome wasn’t built in a day.

  3. Dave Pear Says:

Lovie has reminded us numerous times that he spent last year in his basement.
Well, he has emerged from his hiding to lead us into the NFL basement.
    Thanks Lovie.

  4. willie d Says:

it was a nice thought to bring in Thigpen(I admitted he was the best of the bunch)fired him then brought back Patton. Of coarse Thigpen had top ten play this weekend, for buffalo. Nice talent evaluation goin on there.

  5. The Buc Realist Says:

    Lovie says,

We just need a Head Coach, Offensive Coordinator, QB, Healthy TE’s, 1 offensive Tackle, 2 Guards, New Center. Fast WR’s, Punt/Kick returner, Punter. Defensive End, MLB that can drop in coverage. 2 safties. 1 slot corner.

At least lovie knows what he needs now.

  6. Connor Says:

“and another WR to that list too”

Actually, that’s probably our only real strength on this team. We have two receivers who are each going to have 1,000 yards on our roster. Unless they for the some stupid reason decide to let Jackson go this offseason, we don’t need another one.

  7. bculaw Says:

How can Lovie know exactly what is needed going forward when he doesn’t even have an offensive coordinator, and radical change is likely coming to his offense?

Because, in Lovie’s mind, defense wins games. The defense’s foundation is there. Dominating d-tackle (McCoy), dominating WLB (David), playmaking SLB (Lansana), ball-hawking cb (Banks), and a glimmer of hope of an outside pass rusher (Smith). Tighten up the MLB position, solidify the edge, find a ball-hawking safety, and build some depth, and you very well may have a dominant defensive unit.

    But, we can’t win 0-0.

Hopefully, Lovie understands that, aside from our WRs and RBs, we need to blow up the offense. New coordinator, new QB, new OL, new slot receiver, and a speedster to take the top off the opposing defense.

My first concern (and apparently yours too, Joe), is that Lovie is dead set on Buc ball. I just don’t know if it works in today’s NFL.

My next concern is that, if you add the defensive needs and the offense’s needs, it becomes apparent that this team is not going to contend for a while. Bucs went all offense in the draft last year and got a 2-12 record to show for it, with little production from the rookies aside from Evans. My sense is that Lovie uses this draft to shore up the defense and get it to that “elite” status. That will be the Buc’s culture going forward. Then, you bring in your “QB of the future,” Glennon, and install a run-heavy, QB-friendly system in which he develops. Wouldn’t be popular, but I can definitely see this as “precisely” what Lovie wants to do. Hard to argue against it given the Seahanks’ success, but, as a fan, I am ready for the Bucs to have a true “face of the franchise” at QB for the next decade+. Either way, PLEASE give the fans something to root for and something to believe in!

  8. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

The fate sign language interpeter at the Nelson Mandela memorial made more sense..

  9. mike Says:

Has he made one good evaluation decision since he was hired?????
    I mean besides the placekicker.
Lovie needs another year off to watch football from the couch.

  10. Patrick in VA Says:

Perhaps his confidence in what needs to be done going forward, even without an OC in place, is based on some behind the scene wheeling and dealing to get an OC to verbally agree to come onboard once the season is over. Just because he couldn’t say it at the podium when asked doesn’t mean that they haven’t been addressing it behind the scenes. Maybe he does know what they’ll be looking to do next year and he’ll let us know when it’s appropriate to do it.

  11. jb Says:

This team looks to be going nowhere fast. All Lovie’s doing is giving fans the same sales pitch he gave us back in January. But, it looks like that’s all the Glazers are concerned about. They couldn’t care less about wins, as long as Lovie keeps helping them sell those tickets and those ridiculous looking jerseys. We are “Leeman Bennett” bad now!

  12. HawaiianBuc Says:

    @Connor,

So you think it’s okay to only have 2 WR’s on the roster? I’m confused by that logic. What if one gets hurt?

  13. Patrick in VA Says:

@Hawaiian – I’d argue that Murphy makes a solid 3 and stood in well enough when called upon to fill in for the 2 spot. Given that, yes you want to have a ton of depth but there are other positions where we don’t have a viable #1. We can’t afford to have one position that’s 5 deep and other positions where we don’t even have starter caliber players.

  14. Tye Says:

Lovie is nothing more than a polatision…. Saying what he believes others want to hear so they will ignore the fact that he couldn’t get it done this season… Actions speak louder than words and his action say he is NOT even a decent HC…. His decisions this past season has been 1 bad choice after another and their is no reason to believe that is going to change…

Don’t forget how often he would lie and speak delusional chatter… Lo doesn’t know squat!

  15. IdahoBucsfan Says:

He is an empty suit! Why did it take him a full year to learn what we knew before the season started, and why is his boy still playing QB? He doesn’t know anything now, that he didn’t know before, because he still knows Nothing!

  16. Patrickbucs Says:

Well we will see what he does in the offseason, right now it’s all hyperbole. I’m going to have a real difficult time renewing my season tickets again next year at this point. I do not want to since I’ve had them for a long time and they are great seats but I can’t continue to shell out money to watch the team continually lose at home.

I never ever thought it would be this bad. Outside of Evans on offense I can’t really be positive of anything.

  17. Greg Schiano Says:

    Joe,

You may be taking a deep breath but I am holding my breath until Team Glazer fires this dope! What a deer in the headlights. I would agree with HC Loser (Lovie) that Jim Harbaugh could win with this roster after making intelligent draft picks and free agent changes, but Jim Harbaugh could win with most any roster after making the necessary changes with his OC and DC.

I am not sure why everyone including the Big Poodle believe HC Loser has done anything to merit another painful year of this pathetic brand of football. A better coach would have won the game last Sunday and a better coach would have coached this team to victory in 2-4 other games this season, but if anyone believes holding their noses and submitting to another season of Loser (Lovie) Ball is going to reward the faithful with anything but another great draft position, you are not being honest with yourselves.

Fire the entire staff and start over. I know that is hard, but if not all that will happen is one more 16 game season, Lovie is fired NEXT year, and the Buc’s start all over. Be honest. Stop wasting time. Lovie can’t coach HS football, let alone an NFL team! My record was better than Lovies!

    Greg Schiano

  18. Tom Edrington Says:

Lovie gives reason to believe in re-incarnation…..

No doubt in his former life he was the Captain of The Titanic

  19. bucrightoff Says:

Of course he’s confident and calm. I’d be the exact same if I was getting $20 million no matter how poorly I do my job.

  20. J Moné Says:

    Lovie is too smart

  21. MadMax Says:

This man is delusional and only in it for the “bucks”, yea, those kind of bucks, not our BUCS!

How about if the Glazers dont want to can him, can we at least get a new HC and maybe make Lovie the DC? I dont even know if thats ok….na, just fire him! Dude is smoking some funny stuff!

  22. LargoBuc Says:

If Lovie had done a somewhat decent job, we would’ve beaten the Rams the Saints in NOLA the Vikings the Bears the Bengals and no way would we have been swept by Derek Anderson. This year was about learning and building a foundation but my gosh bringing in Josh McCown to lead us through the growing pains was moronic and set us back. The kind of move that gets a coach one and done.

  23. bucrightoff Says:

Hawaiian is right, Murphy doesn’t provide any variety from Evans and Jackson, he’s just another tall receiver who lacks top end speed. We need a true slot guy (convert Charles Sims?) and a real speed guy to stretch the defense. WR isn’t a huge need but VJax is only here next year I would think so it is worth considering.

  24. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Speaking for Pablo

“Pablo doesn’t like all this negative talk about Lovie around the holidays…it make Pablo feels bad”

Now….as far as the Tampabaybucfan goes….

Buckle your seat belts….Lovie is here for a while….I suspect in return for that he will be awarded a top OC that could provide competetion for the HC job down the road….If I’m the Glazers, I make sure that happens.

  25. Patrick in VA Says:

@bucrightoff – I see your point but I don’t feel the same. I think that having Murphy as our 3 and a healthy ASJ, performing at the level he was sold to us at, would be enough to give defenses fits without having to bring a burner in immediately. I mean, it’ll be great to have one eventually when we’re just rounding out the team but while we’re filling legit holes I think we can do well with what we have, so long as we adjust the OC/QB situation.

  26. Buccfan37 Says:

Lovie is one rootin tootin high falutin Bucs coach. The Bucs reach to nab his services is legendary. What a bunch of freaking geniuses at the helm of the Bucs ship.

    Well yeah….diabetes.

  29. Casual Observer Says:

Perhaps what this team needs most is an improved system of evaluating talent. It seems to me that there were more misses than hits in the free agent activity.

  30. tmaxcon Says:

How can we trust him to evaluate talent when he has NEVER been able to do so. I have an office in Chicago and I proudly wear my bucs gear when I am there. However, each and every time, I get to hear Bears fans complain and say the exact same t hing that we complain about on these pages. I actually had a random guy buy me a beer the other night and tell me he felt sorry for me being a bucs fan. I went on to listen him rant for 2 hours on lovie’s tenure in Chicago and believe me it was WORD for WORD of what goes on here. Complaints about his lying, talent evaluation and condescending tone. His track record speaks volumes about his previous failures. The Glazers did not think this hire through. Lovie has a horrendous record against winning teams and his only playoff runs were when other teams in the division were reloading or had significant injuries. Talk about living off 1 super bowl appearance that he LOST!!!!

Hawaiian: — Lovie just the other day, was raving about how great his special teams coach is. How dare your suggest otherwise. (sarcasm) That is the main problem; his blind defense of “his” guys.

For those of you who want to defend Lovie you have ZERO history to stand on because the numbers are their to back up the fact that he is a mediocre coach and a horrible judge of talent. The object of the game is to WIN not get better or field a team of choir boys. If my math serves me correctly between Dungy and Smith they have had 14 Offensive coordinators during their head coaching tenures. Now that is stability. It’s one thing if those OC’s were promoted to head coaching positions but they were fired or replaced.

As far as those preaching patience and still blaming last years staff, Lovie himself said it was WIN now… I believe his exact phrase the “Bucs fans do not deserve to Wait”. So please tell me why us fans are wrong for holding him accountable for his OWN words. 3 Players that were not good enough for Lovie are playing at a pro-bowl level on their new teams. It was a HUGE risk banking your entire season on a Career backup and a future radio show host. Those were Lovie’s decisions and his alone. He was responsible for those decisions therefore he is accountable.

Patrick in VA – stop the use of the word prejudice until you understand the meaning and history. There are plenty of white / hispanic and other black coaches that have been run out of this league with better records than Lovie. This is not a race issue. I almost threw up when you used the word Prejudice in a previous post. People like you have rendered the words prejudice, bigot and racist meaningless the way you toss those once powerful words around. And another quote you made that is ridiculous is, “It’s lunacy to expect that someone is going to waltz in and, in the first year, completely turn around something that was that bad.” Then Lovie should have stood up and said that it was going to take some time when he was hired. Instead of preaching patience, he raised hope and expectations of the fan base and then crushed us. It’s one thing to have a positive outlook or attitude but it’s entirely another to be delusional.

In addition, Lovie is the one who blew up the roster and let quality players leave. It was Lovie who botched the Tedford hire. I don’t want to hear about Tedfords health. If it was strictly Health related Tedford would have been allowed to return. Holding someone accountable to their own words is not hatred or racism no matter how you spin it.

This country is in a world of hurt because responsibility and accountability are non existent.

No player or coach deserves verbal abuse that being said they are accountable for their actions and words. And yes the Bucs organization is accountable to the tax paying citizens of Tampa bay. Once any organization accepts public money or tax incentives they open that door. Luckily the stadium deal has been a good business decision by both politicians and team but for anyone to suggest the bucs organization is not accountable to their fans is short sighted at best. Sure fans have the right not to attend games nor watch on TV but to simply remove any accountability because it’s entertainment is lunacy.

Bottom line is Lovie made his bed and needs to lay in it. He could have handle the team and fans much better if he was just realistic and honest at the beginning and none of this so called hatred or criticism would be going around. He set the exceptions way to high and is paying the price.

  31. Curse of Gruden Says:

Is Lovie serious? Soggy, please pass me the Kool-aid…

  32. Hawk Says:

Lovie knows what is needed to go forward. After the last game, he will take Evans, GMC, and LVD out of the locker room and have the janitors go in and sweep the place out. He’d have Jackson do it, but he’d drop the broom.

  33. mikeh Says:

    hahahahahahahahahaha! idiot!

  34. Patrick in VA Says:

@tmaxcon – sounds like you’re the one that needs to figure out what the word means:

    prejudice
    [prej-uh-dis] Spell Syllables
    Synonyms Examples Word Origin
    noun
    1.
an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason.
    2.
any preconceived opinion or feeling, either favorable or unfavorable.
    3.
unreasonable feelings, opinions, or attitudes, especially of a hostile nature, regarding an ethnic, racial, social, or religious group.

That said, you’re entitled to your wrong opinions on all other counts

  35. Broy34 Says:

I’ve been reading that back in November the Bucs had Hundley Winston Mariota In that order. Per 2 different sources. With Hundley out the way it’s time for the Mariota Winston debate to heat up

  36. tmaxcon Says:

I know exactly what it means. You LIBTARDS love twisting definitions around. I stand by my opinions. 37. rob w Says:

I can’t buy in to this. We have the worst team in the league, and one of the worst teams we have ever fielded. How can we win from here?

  38. FowlBall Says:

For Lovie’s sake, I hope the Glazers buy his nonsense, because the Bucs’ needs “going forward” are the same as when he took over a year ago.

I’d love to be a fly on the wall as Lovie explains to his bosses why he whiffed, not only on FA decisions, but on his coaching hires (Warhop, O’Dea et al) as well.

Suggestion to the Glazers: hire a knowledgeable football guy as President over L&L.

  39. Patrick in VA Says:

Sounds like you’re the one doing the twisting. I said nothing about race, but that’s what suits your narrative so that’s where it needed to go, right? Thanks for unplugging from your Fox News feed for a moment to regale us with your well informed opinions. Now make sure you go plug back in so you don’t miss out on a talking point. Heaven forbid you miss out on an opportunity to push the collective agenda because you aren’t in the know.

  40. mikeh Says:

@TMAXCON- spot on pal. never liked this hire.

  41. bigpoppabuc Says:

Fix this O-line, patch up the defense and let the cannon take over.

  42. BirdDoggers Says:

The foundation Lovie is talking about already existed before he got to Tampa. He cut or traded part of that foundation in favor of less talented players.

  43. Biff Barker Says:

The man is a complete fool.

    I can’t wait till he’s gone.

  44. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

Didn’t Schiano also say he knew how to fix this during his 0-8 start last year? He went on to win 4 games and was fired. Lovie has won two games and will most likely lose his remaining two. He is basically proclaiming he knows what is needed and how to fix this. One thing about the Glazers they have shown that (1) they are somewhat secretive about things…Gruden thought he was safe, Schiano thought he was safe, and (2) they are not afraid to pull the plug prematurely if they feel they have something better lined up. It would not surprise me one bit of the Glazers haven’t at least tried reaching out to Harbaugh’s agent and the 49’ers front office on the down low to at least gauge interest and compensation. Afterall isn’t the rumor that they had Lovie on the hook mid season last year?

  45. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

    ^^^
    Make that “two things” 🙂

  46. CAN'T FIX IT Says:

HOW DOES HE KNOW WHAT WE NEED GOING FORWARD HE DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT DAY IT IS, LET ALONE HOW TO COACH. YOU WOULD THINK HE KNEW WHAT TALENT WE NEEDED AT THE FIRST OF THE YEAR WHEN HE BROUGHT IN FREE AGENTS AND DRAFT PICKS , NOW HE’S TELLING US HE KNOWS WHAT WE NEED AGAIN, WHAT IF HE MISSES AGAIN , AND AT THE END OF THE YEAR HE TELL US AGAIN ,OH, I KNOW WHAT WE NEED NOW AGAIN, HORSE CRAP, THEN YOU WOULDN’T FIND A FAN IN SITE OR FIND A FAN WITH A POSSY, CUTE THE TIES AND GET A COACH THAT KNOW HOW TO RUN A GOOD OFFENCE LIKE GRUDEN DID AND HE WILL FIND A GOOD DEFENCE COACH…….

  47. PanthersSuck! Says:

This year was all about securing the #1 overall pick

  48. Phil Says:

What we need most of all is a new head coach.

  49. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

Lovie =’s NO season ticket renewals…and only a fool would sign up for first time season tickets if L&L are still running the show….not since the shuttle Challenger has this state been the center of such a disaster…..

  50. ihateloviesmith Says:

he can’t even count to twelve, enough said. as in the words of paul Harvey “good day” when he’s gone

  51. Tom Edrington Says:

Can’t get hurt from drinking Kool-aid, doesn’t anyone remember Jonestown?

  52. Buccfan37 Says:

The Glazers will ride out at least another year with Lovie coaching. One shot Lovie will lead the Bucs to a few more wins In 2015, securing a third year to reach .500 ball. Playoffs seem so distant under Lovie. This is the verge the Bucs are traveling. The verge of complete mediocrity.

  53. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

“Lovie Knows “Exactly What We Need To Do Going Forward”……yeah….. but he does not know what to do when he is GOING BACKWARDS……

  54. Mr. Patrick Says:

Lovie is totally clueless. Period Costing the Glazers millions on bad free agent deals. There’s a reason that he spent a year in his basement and no teams were exactly knocking down the door the hire him

  55. ddneast Says:

Wow, if I’m following this right, seems like we have people that watch Fox News and who are uber conservative that don’t like Lovie.
    Big surprise there.
I have seen a few suggestions about this teams needs and they were numerous. That should tell you something.
The cupboard was pretty much bare when Lovie got here. He tried to put some bad aids on it through FA this year but the two major ones didn’t work. No one has a crystal ball.
Joe likes to point out that the Panthers started a line with two rookies but fails to point out that save for The Ghost, Michael Johnson, the Bucs DL was full of non starters.
Also, Derek Anderson is not only better than our starting QB but is also probably better than the starter on his own team.
Also, for All of you morons who think a rookie QB is going to come in here and turn this team around should take a look at the story that was posted earlier about rookies low success rate.
Neither of the top two QB picks are first round worthy. Just because they are the top two college QB’s doesn’t make them worthy of a first round pick (see Mark Sanchez, Josh Freeman, RG III, Cam Newton).
You are looking at two more losing seasons in a row if you want to go with a rookie.

  56. Couch Fan Says:

Of course he knows what we need. We all know what we need going forward. Question is does he know how to meet and accomplish those needs? I’m seriously doubting it.

  57. ddneast Says:

Tmaxcon, once you said you hung your hat in Chicago I pretty much turned you off and put you in the long list of so called ” fans” who really support other teams and just post out here to annoy others.
In internet lingo, that makes you a troll.
I hope you returned the favor to the guy that bought you a beer that night by fixing him breakfast the nest morning.
I feel sorry for Chicago fans. They are stuck with Cutler for god for god knows how many years. And hey that Trestman guy is rally doing a bang up job. Their locker room is coming apart

  58. buddha Says:

A lot of would-be, wanna-be general managers on this board. Lovie knows he needs a middle-linebacker and another player that can sack the quarterback as well as a safety. He needs a punter too. On the offensive side, he needs guards and another tackle. Also a backup center. On the coaching staff, he needs an offensive and perhaps a defensive coordinator and an offensive line coach.

I’m not of the mind that Lovie wants to lose. As for his firing in Chicago, how has that worked out? I’m not someone who thinks that the NFL is a totally new game in which offense carries one to championships. The Ravens and Seahawks put the lie to that notion–as have the Giants, who haven’t done squat since they tore apart their defense. I do favor drafting a quarterback, though that is surely no sure fix for this franchise. Atlanta and New orleans have pro bowl quarterbacks and no defense and thus both are 6, 7 win teams. Minnesota, Cleveland, and Jacksonville got last year’s darling quarterbacks and none is going to finish at .500.

  59. mike Says:

same talent here as the dolphins and they are going to fire their coach. More talent here than in buffalo and they may make the playoffs. Also, we are 2-12 in the worst division of all time

  60. pick6 Says:

i know what we need too. upgrades at 20 of the 24 primary starting positions on an NFL team. also, upgrades at both coordinator positions.

  61. tmaxcon Says:

ddneast — I have not missed a home game since 98… I fly each and every home game so before you spout off get your facts in order.

  62. tmaxcon Says:

  63. DB55 Says:

We should all file a class action law suit against Lovie for pain and suffering.

  64. JJV Says:

Lovie “knows exactly what needs to be done going forward”. He will secure the #1 pick for the next 5 years doing exactly what he did this year.

  65. tgreg Says:

“We were a 4-12 football team”

    Lovie sure fixed that

  66. ddneast Says:

I’d give you my seat location at RJS if you would like Tmaxcon but they you will have to buy a ticket to show up.
I would have no problem saying that to your face. If you air so prone to violence that you are going to physically assault someone because they have a differ opinion that you do or a different beliefs or teases you a bit, it certainly shows me what type of intellect I’m dealing with.
In fact, the mere fact that you would say something like that shows what type of child mentality you have.
What do you want to do next, meet me after school for some fisticuffs.
    LOL, what a simpleton.

  67. tmaxcon Says:

ddneast — Can you even read moron. I never once mentioned physical assault. I simply asked if you would say it to my face. I am at every game pal.
