A Few Thoughts On Lovie Smith’s Job Security

With a 2-12 record and staring down the barrel of a 2-14 season — in perhaps the worst division in NFL history — and guiding a Bucs team many thought talented enough to be winners, Lovie Smith has earned questionable status when it comes to job security.
And Joe’s really sick and tired of hearing fans and media types spout off about how Team Glazer would never fire Lovie with three guaranteed-salary years ($15 millionish) remaining on his contract.
That’s the equivalent of saying Team Glazer only cares about money, and there’s no evidence of that.
This ownership group ousted Chucky with three years and $15 million left on his contract, following consecutive 9-7 seasons. The guy was an icon and won a Super Bowl and three division titles.
The owners bounced Greg Schiano with three years left on his five-year, $15 million deal, and Schiano had a built in excuse for last season’s slide — a franchise quarterback gone mental and The MRSA infecting his locker room.
For those not paying attention, Team Glazer is a very wealthy bunch.
Just last week, the BBC dove into a pending stock sale by Bucs co-chairman Ed Glazer. It makes buying out coaches’ contracts look like a paltry transaction. And that stock deal represents just a fraction of Ed Glazer’s assets, per the BBC, part of the big pie members of the Team Glazer conglomerate hold.
Joe’s not calling for Lovie’s head here. There are two games to play, and there’s much, much more to assess. But the concept that Lovie is rock-solid safe is ludicrous. It’s also not reflective of how savvy business owners operate.
Joe is confident Team Glazer will scrutinize Lovie’s 2014 performance and weigh how hiring a new offensive staff factors into the overall picture, as it relates to football, finances and fan opinion.
Nothing is guaranteed, though Joe expects Lovie back next season.
What would and should lock down Lovie’s return, however, is something called a victory. Winning a home game or two isn’t too much to ask — neither was stopping Derek Anderson and Greg Olsen for the second time this season.

So then instead of hoping we tank for the #1 pick should we be hoping for two more embarrassing first half blowouts so the Glazers make Jim Harbaugh to Tampa a reality? He’s the closest thing we’ll probably see to Gruden 2.0 (good and bad), but he is a proven CONSISTENT winner at the NFL level like no other HC that will be available.

If this was any other season than his first with the Bucs, Liar Smith would be on the chopping block. How embarassing that the great Lovie Smith has been shown up by the mediocre college coach Greg Schiano. Schiano’s team would spank Lovie’s team, and Schiano’s Bucs were awful.
Why is it that we have to settle for cellar dwelling year after year whereas teams like the Seahawks, 49ers, Cardinals, Chiefs, etc. can go from pretenders to contenders in as little as one or two seasons??

Lovie has failed miserably this season.
Forget the offense, the defense is soft and porous and the special teams aren’t quite average and have made horrific mistakes. Lovie’s player evaluation blows.
I thought he was a great hire, and he’ll be a great fire. Draft a QB and hire an offensive mind. Keep Leslie Frazier if you want.

If not for the miracle at Pittsburgh, we’d be 1-13. Lovie needs a win the next two weeks to avoid the worst Bucs record in 28 years. He’s been nothing short of a debacle as a head coach. If the Bucs are truly drafting a QB at #1, Lovie needs to be fired for that QBs sake. We need that QB to succeed. And you’re a liar if you’d rather have that QB under the guidance of the worst QB evaluator in the league who changes OCs frequently, as opposed to an offensive minded coach.

I hope they evaluate and base his performance on player acquisition and development of talent because he’s failed in multiple departments. Also his press conferences are repetitve and dont show real cognitive or addressing of the replicating problems with penalties and discipline – amongst other things.

More to assess? Lovie’s problem is blind loyalty to Josh McCown, who once again cost a chance at victory with a fumble a few steps from the end zone that gave the Panthers a “gimme” touchdown and the margin of victory.
Should McCown be the starter after the draft, the fan base will riot. I had a guy last Friday, who is a season ticket holder, tell me: “I hate going to the games……”
So he doesn’t go. Certain he is not alone.

Chucky had one promising year besides the super bowl season. Raheem let his train go off the tracks in glorious fashion. And Schiano never felt like he was going to have a championship team. Outside of the 2 blowouts this year, this team has been in every game… But the offense has stalled to cryptic levels. Get an OC, a couple running linesman and next year will be fun.

people i am going nuts reading all these harbaugh comments. trading for him makes no sense with all th holes on this roster. The last thing the bucs need to do is fork over picks for a coach that prefers college. Harbaugh himeself has made remarks that he prefers college. Second, why would a coach want to come work for a dysfunctional franchise. It’s not like it’s a good job in Tampa right now. No state Taxes only goes so far.

The Bucs are worth 1.22 billion, I believe in the latest value. The Glazers better be smart in evaluating Lovie and staff. The retro thing blew out some tires here in Bucland. What’s a few million here or there when you’re that loaded? Spend away! Hire a competent coach with an inkling of a future plan. Start over at square one? That seems like the best option available right now.

We need continuity. I’m tired of starting over. I feel the problem is that we were so bad last year that Lovie felt a roster upheaval was the way to go. Obviously that was wrong. Let’s see if he learns instead of being stubborn like he has shown he can be or like our last coach sure was.

Why the hell they didn’t start Pamphile over Cousins? He can’t be as bad as him. How comme Herron wasn’t activated. Injury to Murphy prevented the Bucs from using near half of their playbook..
How can McCown can still be the starter? He will be out at the end of the season and now Glennon value has dropped badly so we’ll trade him for what? a 6th rounder??

Sticking w/Smith = Losing w/Lovie
Another season with Lovie Smith as HC does absolutely nothing to excite the majority of the Bucs fan base…. Many agree with the overall pick in the draft that Lovie will either screw up that pick OR the QB that is drafted at that spot… Why any person would renew their season tickets for this mess and their is no defining change to try and resolve this matter is insanity to me…
Looking at going 2-14… worst Bucs record since the mid 80’s… Way to go Smith… Thanks for nothing!

All the answers we want, all we need, and certainly all we deserve will be supplied by Lovie during his hour long talk with TJ Reves on this week’s show … NOT. These shows hosted by the Buccaneer Network don’t even take calls anymore, the reason being they cannot control the content of the callers, they can for the texters, Emailers, and tweeters. The shows are nothing more than an extension of the dialogue the Bucccaneers spew forth … garbage, evasion, and lack of accountability. At this point, it’s beyond McClown’s fault, beyond Arroyo’s, beyond even Lovie’s fault. At this point, after 15 weeks of garbage football, it’s the Buccaneers ownership’s responsibility to be honest with the Buccaneer faithful, before there are no more !!! Be honest with us, we deserve at least that. We the Buccaneer faithful, and all citizens in fact built your stadium, we buy your merchandise, we watch your team, we defend our support, now it’s your turn … be honest with us. Give us answers as to why we have continued to start perhaps the worst QB in the NFL week after week. Telll us why we shed from the roster a complete offensive line only to replace it with a line that would be second to what Wisconsin has on it’s squad this year. Tell us why our D line continues to provide opposing QBs ample time to hit the receivers who seemingly know all the openings in our fabled Tampa Two. Finally, tell us why our coach can make contradictory statement after contradictory statement to the press and not be held accountable ? Tell us Ownership … tell us.

As I see it…
I was not on board with the Lovie hire. I believed it was just going to be Dungy 2.0. Well I was wrong. It’s Dungy .0003.
Having said that, I doubt that the Glazers will fire him, and nothing we SAY will change their thinking. What we DO, just might. The Glazers guaranteed fans the opportunity to watch the games from home, in the hopes that Lovie/Licht would field a product that would have fans storming the ticket booths. The fans ARE storming the ticket booths, but it is as they are leaving the stadium.
The Glazers are not likely to offer that ‘gift’ next year. It was an expensive gamble that Lovie/Licht barfed on. The three things (besides losing seat-butts) that will hurt Lovie’s chances at a second year, are his…
#1 – FA signings
There didn’t seem to be any investigation into the ‘football’ character (heart) of these players or the actual physical talent possessed by these guys. They were signed because Lovie/Licht heard that their services were in demand, so they must be good.
#2 – Discipline
Dungy’s teams were disciplined. If a player had the same penalty multiple times, he found himself ‘watching’ the game. Discipline must be important to the Glazers, because they were willing to hire GREG SCHIANO just to instill discipline into this team.
#3 – Stubbornness
Going back to Dungy, the thing that got him fired was his unwillingness to let the OC have control of the offense. No matter who Dungy hired, for OC, the Bucs still threw a 5yd pass on third and 7, and then waited for the defense to score.
Lovie would have Banks sitting next to Glennon if ‘his’ CB hadn’t gotten hurt. How many weeks have the Bucs put out the same O-line with the same results? How many games does he need to play McCown before he sees a problem?
I wonder if the Glazers laughed or cringed when Lovie said (@ 1-6) that football starts in November?
We shall soon see if they’ve been laughing or reading applications.

If I’m the Glazers, I don’t fire Lovie…but….I take control and hire a very strong OC….perhaps an ex HC…..I tell Lovie he can keep his job but to focus on defense and let the OC run the offense….I also give the new OC very strong input into the draft & FA.
I am essentially hiring Lovie’s replacement if Lovie doesn’t turn things around…..he has one more year.

Oh yeah Lovie’s career record against above .500 teams? 19 wins, 38 losses. So not only does he miss the playoffs more twice as much as he makes it, he losses to above average teams or better twice as much as he beats them. Seriously where is Lovie’s career without Devin Hester? No wonder he loves him so much.

Another option that is not being talked about enough in my opinion is:
For the glazers to hire a real football guys to run the show with real power a team president type…
Then Strip Lovie of full control and let him coach. Pres / GM makes oc hiring and player evaluations and let lovie focus on coaching and learning how to manage a game on game days. I have never been a fan of the total control route. I think combining 3 jobs into one always short changes one of the jobs.

The very things Lovie was fired over in Chicago have shown themselves to be more than true here in Tampa….he is a horrible evaluator of talent, his football instincts are awful and his clock and game management skills are non-existant….what made anyone think things would be different here in Tampa, here they are actually magnified because of the lack of talent as compared to some of those Bears teams, all anyone had to do was look a little deeper than W/L and you would have seen the signs that Lovie is a horrible head coach. Good business people cut their losses quickly as to not incur more losses…

The biggest problem for Lovie, besides the aweful record, is his big swing and misses in free agency. Lovie isn’t just costing the Glazers on his own contract, he’s costing them with all the money spent in free agency with nothing to show for it. I’m sure the Glazers want to win and they want the stadium sold out for every game. They could decide Lovie isn’t the guy to get the job done. I could certainly see them being intrigued with the idea of bringing in a name like Harbaugh, especially if they have the first overall pick in the draft. It’s easier to sell tickets when you have optimism from the fan base. Lovie was supposed to be that guy, but the optimism is all but gone now. There’s something to be said about stability, but a 2-14 season could change things.

Coaches need to know that they are going to receive a fair chance, and having a 3 year coach (Rah), then a 2 year coach (Schiano), and then a 1 year coach (Lovie – former NFL Head Coach of the Year) is not a situation any candidate worth his weight would waste his time with.
Unless you just enjoy an endless cycle of coaches and not going to the playoffs, well then we should fire Lovie after one season

I mean we have been subjected with this nonsense since training camp and preseason. and things sure have not got better have they. look at the big picture with smith, he’s like the 12 stepper who keeps doing the same thing over and over thinking it will be different only to remain the same. cut the chord with this loser name an interim coach. win back the trust of your fanbase, and hire a competent H.C. with a competent staff next season to go along with your top pick. I am not buying in to we need to keep smith around as not to scare off perspective coaches. if the monies right and the prospect of picking first, along with the absolute homerun of pairing that pick with mike evans for years to come, should be more than enough of a incentive for any offensive minded coach, as well as the pieces he would have on defense-GMC-LVD-so forth. We wouldn’t have to “trade” for Harbaugh since he’s on the outs with the SF management. There is no Al Davis to hold him hostage.
I admire Harbaugh enormously. Are we sure he’s said no to his alma mater?
He’d kick some butt in the Big 10. And his tough style is probably more easily accepted in college than the NFL.
But Lovie isn’t going anywhere, nor should he in fairness. But then again after the mersa and JFRO meltdowns I thought Schiano deserved another year.
I think what got Schiano fired more than anything was the appearance that his players quit on him at the end. I don’t see that yet under Lovie. They still seem to be playing very hard if also very stupid. And so Lovie WILL BE BACK.

LOVIE PICKED THIS SITUATION ABOVE ALL OTHERS IN THE NFL. When will people understand that? All the “he needs time to correct the roster, get his guys etc” talk is insane. Andy Reid was the top candidate a year earlier. He intelligently sat back, and evaluated rosters and chose the Chiefs, because he knew they were a couple pieces/ scheme away from being good. And he was right, because he can evaluate talent and knows football. Lovie did the exact same thing (so he thought- see offseason interviews where he is almost cocky about how good we can be) and spent more than Reid ($150 mill he might as well have light on fire) and let our most versitile lineman leave in Zuttah (who is a top 5 center in NFL right now and can play 3 positions!?!?!)- and we started Cousins at TE after letting Wright go for peanuts after a 1200 yard rookie campaign. And AustinRastafarianJenkins has been a bust thus far as a second rounder. I hate Lovie!!!!!!!

I expect Lovie to stay but what exactly did he get right and what did he make better? Tedford’s loss was unexpected and catastrophic. His failure to return is a huge warning that all is not well at One Buc. It’s their money but it wouldn’t be a shock if the brothers decide to spend it differently.

If you’re a Lovie hater and want him gone then you do not want us to draft Marcus or Jameis. That virtually guarantees Lovie a third season.
There will be a huge cry of joy, tickets will be sold, and Jameis/Marcus will be declared the savior taking all of the pressure from Lovie.
If they lose next year Lovie simply claims he needs more time to groom the “savior”. It’s a built in excuse and an incredible distraction.
If we pick a QB #1 in the draft, the white hot glare of expectations just goes through the roof. And with it comes the disappointment of watching most rookie QB’s. See this years crop or perhaps Peyton Manning,

This team has lost a lot of close games. I think for the most part they have played hard for Lovie. They just do not have a QB. McCown has made it quite apparent why he has been a back-up his whole career. Love his heart. Love his determination. But he makes 2 or 3 mistakes a game that gets the Bucs beat. Either the Bucs draft Jameis Winston or get a game manager and draft defense until Lovie and Leslie Frazier can get that defense right. I haven’t lost faith in Lovie. He’s a good coach. But 2015’s draft has to address the offensive line and more depth on defense.

All the talk was how bad a coach he was and we needed a players coach like Lovey. Well now we have him and a washed up has been who never was. Only hope for us not getting snake-bit again net year is to chop the head off the snake. He does not even teach tackling fundamentalist. Who said he was a defensive coach. Time to get on the ” Fire Lovey bandwagon “. Oh ya the dog sat back down in his spit.” For the Glazers to have any credibility they will have to require more from a experienced NFL Head Coach than a new Coach from the Colege ranks. schiano had built in excuses? you mean the besides that no one in the organization including the folks that worked in ticket sales liked him? or that he is the one that caused all the quarterback drama by playing games in the offseason. he’s the one who drafted glennon who didn’t turn out to be any better than the quarterback that went mental before him and you can debate that all you want but nothing you say would make any sense because he didn’t play any better than mcclown is playing right now and he’s not even as accurate as a career backup.
if you think lovie is going to get fired because of the offensive line and the defensive end he signed in free agency your dreaming because everyone knows that’s not the way to build a winner and everyone including glazers knows theres not enough talent on this roster to fire a winning head coach, for all of you that thought we could retool this team in one offseason need to go back to your franchise football season on your xbox

I have enjoyed reading everyones comments. Its time to comment myself.
What Professional sports organization would lose on purpose and what makes you people think that the #1 pick is going to work out. there are more duds than studs picked #1.
I personally would not be a fan of a team that would lose a game on purpose.
The problems are bigger than lovie. he should get 1 more year. We were doomed as soon as we lost our OC the first week of the season.
My opinion is that if the defense doesnt get any better next year and get a QB (not nessisarily #1 pick) then its time for Lovie to go
