Jameis Watch: Inconsistent Drive
December 13th, 2014Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, national champion James Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon and Josh McCown.
It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback to wear No. 5 ever in the state of Florida.
Lovie Smith spent a lot of years working with longtime scout and NFL personnel man Greg Gabriel.
Gabriel, who has become rather cranky recently as media type, now does all kinds of draft analysis at NationalFootballPost.com
Yesterday, he cranked out an in-depth look at Jameis Winston. There’s plenty of positive and negative. Here’s a snippet in which Gabriel takes a slap at Winston’s mechanics:
Florida State plays from mostly a spread offense with some snaps from under center. They run and pass from both formations. Winston seems to have a good command of the offense and shows the ability to change plays and protections at the line of scrimmage. He also seems to be a strong leader on the field. Winston can set up quickly from both under center and in the spread. When he takes snaps while in the spread he still drops back some. He has good form and generally stays in balance. He has good mechanics to go along with a quick release. He usually does a good job setting his feet before he throws and seldom over strides into the throw.
While he has a very strong arm, he doesn’t consistently drive the ball to his receivers. I have seen a number of plays where he floats the ball. He shows the ability to go through a three man progression and he also can go from a primary receiver to a secondary receiver and back to the primary.
Driving the ball more consistently certainly is correctable. Winston shows the ability in every game.
To conclude his piece, Gabriel says he wouldn’t draft Winston in any round, though he’s certain a team will fall in love with Winston and marry him quickly.
That’s for sure.

This guy scares me unless it’s 3rd or later
December 13th, 2014 at 6:29 pm
Pablo says……lets take Winston…….”I love his off-field deportment and choice of women”…..”I also think he would be a great community asset…..what community, I don’t know”
Thought I’d step in for Pablo….

Cranky Gabriel sums it up well in his last paragraph. None of these media types see, know and understand the whole football game, their own self-infatuation notwithstanding. Once upon a lifetime they get it right. Gabriel has his lifer in that paragraph. Archive it for when Lovie is coaching up JW.

Is there going to be a Mariota Watch after he wins the Heisman tonight? Or after he spanks Jameis’ Seminoles?
December 13th, 2014 at 7:02 pm
“…wouldn’t draft Winston in any round…”
That might truly be the most ridiculous statement I have ever read from a member of the media – and that says a LOT. Really? Not in any round? Not even in the 6th or 7th?? Ridiculous
December 13th, 2014 at 7:04 pm
@tbbf,
Well done. That was so Pablo. I had to keep looking up as I read it to see that it wasn’t him, lol
December 13th, 2014 at 7:06 pm
Whichever wins the Heisman, I do NOT want.
Wait, did Luck win it?
December 13th, 2014 at 7:10 pm
For the Robert Griffin III naysayers in a trade scenario, who was a Heisman winner, he has never had a QB rating in the nfl below 82.2 for a season. In fact, his rating is over 86 this year.
Of course, he’s only played in 6 games this year and has never had a complete season.
December 13th, 2014 at 7:19 pm
If we stay at #1, Im gonna be singing “TRADE TRADE TRADE”
We can still land “PETTY PETTY PETTY”
December 13th, 2014 at 7:20 pm
No to RGKnee. Idiot let the fame go to his head.
December 13th, 2014 at 7:24 pm
Wow “wouldn’t take Winston in any round?” What an ignorant statement.
December 13th, 2014 at 7:38 pm
Cooper wins the Heisman, IMO.
December 13th, 2014 at 8:02 pm
I’d like to know what the Bucs braintrust is thinking going forward. Or are they just winging it as it comes. It feels like the expansion era Bucs all over again.

dammit, you big dummy.
December 13th, 2014 at 8:13 pm
Gabriel is a joke, best qb in college and this guy says he would not draft because of some maturity issues now we know why he is not working for a team now
December 13th, 2014 at 8:17 pm
Mariota is winning the Heisman. Unfortunately, Heisman winners don’t do well in the NFL. Hopefully, Mariota and Winston can Buc that trend.
December 13th, 2014 at 8:32 pm
Joe doesn’t have a complaint department. Whatever is happening is not from Joe. –Joe
December 13th, 2014 at 9:20 pm
Wouldn’t draft Winston in any round. Hmmm, didn’t Tony Dungy say the same thing not too long ago?
December 13th, 2014 at 9:33 pm
Mariota is #1 in completions of over 15 yds. Tell me how he doesn’t throw deep again.
December 13th, 2014 at 10:14 pm
Jameis Winston is coming to Tampa!
December 13th, 2014 at 10:17 pm

December 13th, 2014 at 10:21 pm
Mariota Heisman Winner! 54tds 2ints we are ready for the Mariota Watch now…
December 13th, 2014 at 10:26 pm
Trade down because Winston will fall a little bit. I hope the Bucs get that #1 draft pick so L&L can wheel & deal and get Winston later in the first round.
December 13th, 2014 at 10:29 pm
Suck for the Duck.
December 13th, 2014 at 10:31 pm
Winston’s not falling because there will be too many teams that will need a QB at the top. Example : The Jets.
December 13th, 2014 at 11:01 pm
I still anticipate the draft if the Bucs win over the Panthers. I don’t remember the Buc’s ever tanking for a better pick in the draft. It could have happened.
December 13th, 2014 at 11:36 pm
Bucs don’t need to tank sadly. I think they can actually beat Carolina or New Orleans, probably Carolina since the Bucs are better on the road for some reason.
Liar Smith’s Succaneers will get blown out for the 3rd time this season in the Battle of the Bays though. Rodgers or no Rodgers.
I think the Bucs win 1 game out of the 3 left, possibly ruining our chance at Mariota or Winston, barring a victory from the NY Jets and/or Titans.
December 14th, 2014 at 12:20 am
Mariota….Throwin Samoan
December 14th, 2014 at 1:19 am
I consider the fans in here knowledgeable so I have a question I would like to hear your answers to.
What if we draft Leonard Williams from USC to bolster the dline then trade into the late first round to nab Connor Cook or Hundley? Would this piss you off bc we missed out on the top 2 QBs?
If Pamphile at either tackle and Edwards at C/G can show promise this scenario would be awesome I think. Can you imagine a JJ Watt or quicker version of Seymour type player next to McCoy? The Tampa 2 needs big time pressure to disrupt the timing of the vulnerable passing windows.
Also i like Cooks and Hundleys size, they will hold up better than Mariota. They both run nfl offenses and can read defenses.
December 14th, 2014 at 1:30 am
Trade back for more picks. To many holes on this team.
December 14th, 2014 at 4:34 am
@Joe
You gotta admit
Rich “The Rockstar” Hahn….has a nice ring…lol
If some kind of way he could Dump Danks & Viciedo for some peanuts
Then parlay that w/ a for Tyler Clippard… its a wrap!!!
December 14th, 2014 at 4:41 am
Ahh Damn, I’m in the penalty box again (Your comment is awaiting moderation. )..smh..lol
What I do this time …was it the Canadian Joke?
December 14th, 2014 at 5:48 am
Unfortunately, those who complain maliciously (aka lie to discredit Joe publicly) have forced Joe to focus on the literally 99 percent that have no issue. It’s just not a good use of Joe’s time. Sorry. –Joe
December 14th, 2014 at 5:57 am
Williams does not sell tickets a qb does Glennon and mccown are the guys now winston or mariota must be the pick!
December 14th, 2014 at 6:03 am
To properly judge his opinion for yourself, you gotta look at his previous analysis of the QBs that came out last year, take a step into my time machine. Kinda interesting him calling Carr:
http://m.bleacherreport.com/articles/2028620-2014-draft-why-no-quaterbacks-are-locks-to-be-drafted-in-the-top-10
December 14th, 2014 at 6:08 am
Matt love where your heads at.. Would love it more if he was a DE, but I think he’s more of a guarantee than any QB. You gotta develop any QB u take, and since neither has all of what you want, pick one at the top of the second or back of the first
December 14th, 2014 at 6:58 am
@MOWorwalkdaplank
One of those two will not be in contention anymore since they play each other today – Jets @Tenn

Griffin’s biggest issue is his indecisiveness. His mechanics are a mess, he holds onto the ball far too long… he needs a change of scenery. While he may never be as fast as he once was, he is still a great athlete and has had great production for his brief time in the NFL. I would not be opposed to bringing in RG3 for a look….of course Washington would have to flat out cut him for that to happen.
December 14th, 2014 at 9:09 am
Man…reading some of these posts is so frustrating. There will be a huge market to trade up from QB needy teams. If you are NOT a QB needy team, I would say trade down and get those pick. But we are the QB needy team at the top of the draft so you stand pat and pick a QB. For the life of me, I just don’t think it’s that hard. Lose the rest of our games and Mariota is coming to Tampa, it’s as simple as that.
December 14th, 2014 at 10:56 am
Marcus Marriotta is the best choice.
Lovie Smith will pass up on him though… or even ruin him.
December 14th, 2014 at 2:44 pm
Cook isn’t coming out. I’ve said several times, yet people still wanna draft him. He is staying.
December 14th, 2014 at 9:51 pm
Fair enough Joe I’m just a die hard fan as yourself, even though they are horrendous this year I’m all about this team. Your site is by far the best source of Bucs news and info and I visit it numerous times daily 365 days a year. This is why it is frustrating when redirected. Sorry for bitching.
