Jameis Watch: Outside “Developmental” Class
December 12th, 2014Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, national champion James Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon and Josh McCown.
It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback to wear No. 5 ever in the state of Florida.
Former Bucs quarterback Shaun King has his mind made up: Jameis Winston is far and away the cream of the 2015 quarterback crop.
King is a lead NFL Draft analyst for Yahoo! Sports and is seen on NBC Sports Network. Speaking on the Ron and Ian show on WDAE-AM 620 today, King said Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota should be lumped into a “developmental” quarterback group with Michigan State QB Connor Cook and UCLA QB Brett Hundley, all expected to be in next year’s draft.
King said you’re “flipping a coin” with any of those three quarterbacks, versus the surer thing of Winston.
Yes, the debate will rage on for months. But for Bucs fans, what’s important here is that 2015 will not be a golden class of NFL quarterbacks. This isn’t 1983.
If, say, the Bucs have the No. 5 overall pick, then their QB options will be limited.

What will Lovie do??????? Oh Man thats scary…,
December 12th, 2014 at 11:10 am
Cook has already said he is staying another year.
“Michigan State junior QB Connor Cook said he intends to bypass the 2015 NFL Draft and return to the Spartans for his senior season.
“That’s the main goal,” Cook said in response to possibly going pro early. “I’ve always talked about it with my parents and stuff, and you want to use up your eligibility. Michigan State’s a great place, and I’ve had a lot of fun here and I had a lot of great relationships.
“My goal, my main priority is to use up my years here at Michigan State.”” – CBSSports

I think Jamis can be every bit as good a Vince young.
December 12th, 2014 at 11:31 am
Gaytor fans can whine all they want but Winston is the ONLY NFL ready QB in the Draft.
Do not worry it really does not matter what the bucs do with the draft or fa until the Glazer clowns strip lovie of total control or do the right thing and fire his lying / hypocrite arse.
People you cant throw licht and tedford under the bus when it’s lovies team and lovie has the final say. Lovie is not a good head coach maybe a decent cordinator but that is even questionable considering the Defense sucks too coupled with his out dated and stubborn way of thinking. Living in the PAST never works, not only in sports but life as well.
December 12th, 2014 at 11:32 am
“Shaun King, one of two Buc Quarterbacks that lost a NFC Championship Game when his defense gave up 11 or fewer points.”
Joe…I noticed you didn’t give Shaun King credit for leading us this time…..hope that’s a permanent decision so I won’t feel compelled to counter.
As for his opinion on Winstion……well, we don’t need a JBF poll….there is a poll out that has Buc Fans 80-20 for Mariota.
I would take either that drops to us….and if one doesn’t, I would trade for extra picks and select a project QB with potential later in the draft.
December 12th, 2014 at 12:03 pm
TBBF,
We already have a project QB, we don’t need another one.
December 12th, 2014 at 12:03 pm
Jameis Winston as Bucs QB. Kind of has a nice ring to it. Will Lovie be forced to draft a QB with a high draft pick? That’s the hard part to believe.
December 12th, 2014 at 12:06 pm
Here is one thing….we win this Sunday and you can kiss a 1st rd pick good-bye.
Also, the only people that want Winston right now are Nole fans. Everybody else that doesn’t want him are not Gator fans.
December 12th, 2014 at 12:13 pm
Doesn’t matter who anybody wants. Only matters who the front office wants.
I would be surprised if this front office drafted a read option QB.
December 12th, 2014 at 12:29 pm
If anyone cares to remember, the knock on Freeman when he was coming out of college was the amount of interceptions he threw….the most he threw in one season…15. Go ahead FSU fans keep pumping this kid up, it will only lead to another wasted 5 years, just like Freeman gave us, and he had a decent O-line infront of him.
December 12th, 2014 at 12:30 pm
The only advice Shaun King should be giving is his recommendations on which buffets to go to. Surprised you didn’t call him an icon given you said the same about Dilfer.
December 12th, 2014 at 12:42 pm
It’s simple – avoid Jameis Winston like the plague.
Sure the upside is great and if things work out for the best, good for Jameis Winston and the team that ultimately drafts him.
For he Buccaneers, however, it’s more complicated as Tampa Bay can ill afford another high first round pick bust. Winston has enough character issues that drafting him is a crap shoot. An established winning team with veteran leadership and an established coach and staff can take the risk and absorb any potential fall out – the Bucs can’t.
The rudderless ship that has been the Bucs for the last six years cannot afford off field issues stemming from an immature high first round pick franchise quarterback – Jameis Winston.
If the Bucs must draft a QB then go with someone with no history of off the field issues. The future health of the franchise demands the establishment of a sense of stability and normalcy so it can develop as a football team.
December 12th, 2014 at 1:01 pm
So Joe, let me get this straight, you would be okay with having a rapist criminal as the Bucs starting QB. No problem(s) with the precedent that sets – just win baby, being a decent human being has no bearing on winning games. Bucs fans will understand and overlook the fact that the face of the team is a rapist and thief. Come on, this is just a game, it has no bearing on people’s lives other than entertainment. Fans that desire this “Thug” are nothing more than shallow people, and their lives are empty of morals.
December 12th, 2014 at 1:07 pm
29-O as Starting QB for a pro Style offense !!! Has been breaking down Coverage , and knowing where to go with his hot reads since 7th Grade !!! Has never SHRUNK in the Moment!! With all the off field issues he has had to deal with !!!! Freeman vanished when the going got tuff !!! Give me a guy that came in with all the Hoop La and all he has done is gone Undefeated , Has a Heisman Trophy as a Freshman, one the National Championship . has brought the Noles Back time and Time again !!! give me a guy that has had everything thrown at him adversity wise and just keeps rolling and winning !!!
The problem with all you Bucs fans is we have never had an Elite QB on our team Eve so you guys don’t know how to act

He may be the best quarterback playing baseball next year… that’s a serious concern.
December 12th, 2014 at 1:15 pm
Has Winston been convicted of a crime NO therefore you ignorant fools calling him a rapist or criminal need to review Webster for meaning of those to words.
December 12th, 2014 at 1:18 pm
I think you all are getting hung up on what style of offense a QB runs in college. You can list off quite a few players currently starting in the NFL that didn’t run a pro style offense. If that is your only knock against drafting a QB then you probably shouldn’t be talking about QBs.
December 12th, 2014 at 1:20 pm
You got a point there. Freeman cared when things were’nt going his way, breaking down every which way but loose. Winston now, nothings going to faze him. Good attribute.
December 12th, 2014 at 1:32 pm
It’s not a matter of starting in the NFL. Josh McCown is starting in the NFL. Geno Smith (read option) is starting in the NFL. The point is the vast, vast majority of read option QBs have had a some early success only to regress as defenses caught up to them.
Feel free to list the read option QBs that do not fall under this description.
Russel Wilson is a great guy. I like him. But, the team is predicated on the Seattle defense and playing at home.
Otherwise?
As far I can tell, anyone here can discuss their opinions on QBs. You included. Unless of course you are actually employed in a NFL front office. If so, do tell.
December 12th, 2014 at 1:46 pm
@ Bo Jim
“other’ was factored out……80/20 was Mariota/Winston head to head….
I also was in the other until very recently….if Mariota is there when we pick…I want him!!!
December 12th, 2014 at 2:00 pm
@ Joe
How come you did not post an article about how Mariota cleaned up at the College Football Awards on ESPN last night, winning every award that a QB could win and Winston not even getting a mention?
December 12th, 2014 at 2:00 pm
Mariota is a great college QB running a college system (just like Tebow). The nfl will be much different for him when he actually has to scan the field and go to his #2 or #3 WR.
December 12th, 2014 at 2:10 pm
More than the fact that he runs a college system, look at the fact that he didn’t even start until his Sr. year in HS and Hawaii isn’t exactly known for having powerhouse HS football programs. Not to mention that stats have shown that Mariota throws to his #1 option on 85-90% of his throws. Granted he’s open most of the time because of that college gimmick style offense that they run but during his transition to the big league he will find that things are much different.
December 12th, 2014 at 2:57 pm
Waterboy, you mean like Mariota already does? He reads his 2nd and 3rd options quite a bit. He actually sits in the pocket for a while. I’d like to know where you got the stat of 85-90%.
December 12th, 2014 at 2:57 pm
Tank us for Jameis?
December 12th, 2014 at 2:57 pm
Tebow was shafted. He has more NFL playoff wins the Matthew Stafford and Sam Bradford combined!! Tebow has more playoff wins than RGIII, Colt McCoy, & Curt Cousins combined.
I am so over this crap about Tebow. He beat out the guy who is starting for the Panthers 3 years ago!
If Tebow was given 3 years without being yanked, he would be great! If Tebow went with a real coach like Jim Harbaugh who reclaimed Alex Smith’s career!
December 12th, 2014 at 3:00 pm
Oregon runs a spread offense, which is used in the NFL and there are spread offense QBs in the NFL currently. Not sure what this read option stuff is. He does very well in the pocket and scrambles around to get a receiver open. I’ve seen it time and again from him. Hell, he did it against Arizona in the championship game.
December 12th, 2014 at 3:04 pm
GUYS……………………..Don’t you realize that the difference between this yr and last yr is there is finally enough film on the guy. If college coaches and players can figure the guy out enough to make him throw 14 first half Interceptions just Imagine what they are gonna do to him in the pros. What is Cam’s record by the way?
December 12th, 2014 at 3:18 pm

LOL. Thanks for making my week. A career 49.7% passer with a record of 8-6 was shafted. Awesome.
All Tebow does is win right? Guess who had lost even less that Tebow? Meaning not at all….
December 12th, 2014 at 3:20 pm
Mariota is the most heavily hyped quarterback since Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III in 2012. Only one QB was taken in the top-10 in 2013 and 2014, Blake Bortles, and that was a minor shock. The Jets, Raiders, Jaguars, Buccaneers, and Titans are all tied for the worst record in the NFL at 2-11. The Jaguars and Raiders both drafted quarterbacks in 2014. If either of them got the No. 1 pick, there could be a bidding war to get Mariota.
December 12th, 2014 at 3:28 pm
“What is Cam’s record by the way?”
What’s Cam have to do with Jameis? His college style was much closer to Mariota’s than Winston’s.
Cam is exactly what I am talking about with Mariota. Primarily one read option college QBs: RGIII, Cam, Kapernick, etc.
Winston – Prostyle, hard to take down, moves but always looking downfield, comparable to Big Ben. Not Cam.
December 12th, 2014 at 3:28 pm
HAHAHA, you gotta read this from SI: ““We got tape of (Saint Louis) and Marcus would come in for six or eight snaps. He was faster and had a different release and it was like, ‘Wait, who is that?’” Helfrich says.
Intrigued, Helfrich booked a ticket to Honolulu. “The whole thing was like a movie,” he says. “It felt made up.” Teachers, coaches and fellow students gushed about Mariota’s abilities in the classroom and on the field, proudly telling the Oregon assistant that one of the best athletes was also the nicest. Really, how many quarterbacks also serve as team tutor? Helfrich kept thinking he would find “a skeleton in the closet,” and he was convinced Mariota’s playing ability had to be overblown when he didn’t. Then, in a spectacular setting — Helfrich remembers Diamondhead glowing the background, blue skies and balmy weather — he watched Mariota throw. It took approximately five minutes for him to call head coach Chip Kelly with an assessment.
“This guy’s unbelievable!” Helfrich said.
“Offer him,” Kelly replied.
“Shortest evaluation conversation of all time,” Helfrich says now.
Before Mariota left for the Ducks’ camp that summer, he confided in Arceneaux that Oregon was his dream school. Johnny Manziel had already pledged his loyalty to the Ducks when Mariota committed on June 30. According to Rivals.com, the three-star prospect had one other offer: Memphis.
“I was telling everybody, ‘I have this quarterback …” and no one would listen,” Arceneaux recalls. “Then he commits to Oregon and everyone starts to call. I told them, ‘Yeah, go check your emails.’”
That September Manziel flipped his commitment from Oregon to Texas A&M, where in 2012 he became the first freshman to win the Heisman.”
Manziel was going to be a Duck and then switch when Mariota signed there. hahaha.
December 12th, 2014 at 3:35 pm
“Don’t you realize that the difference between this yr and last yr is ”
His top two running backs to the NFL, two of his top 3 WR’s to the NFL, his starting center to the NFL, new inexperienced receivers quitting on routes, and causing a good picks of the picks. New center breaks arm and brings on a very undersized center, allowing his pocket to break down continually.
It’s funny, when UF had all those injuries in 2013, that’s all I heard, but when FSU has issues, it’s only that other teams are figuring out Jameis. Sadly, they didn’t figure out enough to beat him.
He certainly tried to do too much at times this year, with the defense struggling, unlike last year. But, whether he spanked UF like in 2013, or waited to the 2nd half to get the win this year, the important part is he got the win. Wins. All of them.
December 12th, 2014 at 3:36 pm
“Mariota is the most heavily hyped quarterback since Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III in 2012.”
And stylistically, which of those 2 does he resemble?
December 12th, 2014 at 4:35 pm
Can we compare Cam draft questions to Jamis? Look how Cam turned out.
December 12th, 2014 at 4:36 pm
Winston’s playing ablility is without question, it is his maturity that is in question. If he has grown up, then he would be a credit if not you would wonder each week will he be on the field or confined to not being on the field.
We will see him and Mariota in the Rose Bowl so that should give us a good comparison on the field.
December 12th, 2014 at 4:47 pm
@Love and Warrick………………..lol bro you really should get off Winstons pole. Did you SEE the UF game?? If we had a SHRED of offense not only would UF had won but by stepping up the tempo and scoring points it would have made Winston throw more than the FOUR that he threw. Three of em were completely boneheaded reads. The kid is not ready yet to play as it is………….MUCH less the fact that he is a friggin head case. He has Vince Young written all over him and most Rational Seminole fans that I know believe the same thing. I hope against all hopes that nobody in our front office is stupid enough to take the risk.
The Cam reference is because he was supposedly a “Once in a generation” QB and all that but he too was a headcase or still is rather. Panthers jumped out and took him expecting an instant turnaround because of this “Elite” prospect. Four years later look where they are. Build your team from the trenches is the only way to make one last. I dont want a QB in this draft because Im smart enough to know that is not our most pressing need.
December 12th, 2014 at 4:54 pm
So what. Mel kipper is ESPN’s lead analyst and I wouldn’t listen to him either. The only thing I would let King pick for me is the best buffet in Tampa.
December 12th, 2014 at 5:03 pm
Damn, Bucrightoff, you beat me to the buffet remark. Sorry guy, swear I didn’t read it before I posted mine.
Greg Schiano, you really are an idiot. I should have known you were a little Tebowite. Why don’t you try emulating his character a little since you admire him so much.
All the vitriol you throw Smith’s way certainly isn’t very Tebowi like.
December 12th, 2014 at 5:06 pm
He resembles neither. Griffin ran all the time. Mariota does not.
December 12th, 2014 at 5:10 pm
All this whining about he lost this player and this player is BS. Every college team goes through it. Hell, Ohio St is on their third QB and they are still dominating. Everybody loses players to the draft. Quit making excuses for Winston’s awful throws at times. He has regressed this year.
December 12th, 2014 at 5:20 pm
Whining? I think he tried to do too much. That’s a flaw, certainly. But, no question I have zero doubt he will be the superior NFL QB. Ohio State lost to a horrible VT team. A loss is never dominate.
I certainly can’t wait to see them head to head on Jan. 1. If Mariota looks better, I will say as much.
Ultimately, the truth will be found out in about 2-3 years. then we will see who’s better for sure.

Cam has always been a one read and run QB. There’s no comparison. Same with VY. Not the same type of QB whatsoever. His style of play is zero like the FSU offense.
I’m glad you think you’re smart. Rock on, man!
