Mike Glennon’s Season Seems Over

Offense was one subject yesterday that was brought up in Lovie Smith’s daily presser, and it seems that the Mike Glennon Mob better take a chill pill.
Just judging from Lovie’s words, it seems that until or unless Josh McCown gets completely hammered by opposing defenses, Glennon will not take the field for the Bucs in 2014.
In fact, Lovie said the subject of starting Glennon never came up in meetings.
“Not at all. It would be pretty hard to tell the guys we’re looking to the 2015 season and we’re just going to start doing it that way,” Lovie said. “What I’ve talked to the team about is that you come to work, you try to win every week, so how could you do it any other way besides that? The future is not here right now. This is the 2014 season and we feel like we can get some things accomplished. With the organization we’re all on board with what we’re going to do on these last games now, whether that means looking at someone, if we look at someone it’s because we feel like they give us the best chance to win and we’ll see how that goes.”
The story Joe referenced above that will be published later may give you an additional peek into the mindset of why Lovie has no plans to start Glennon.
Joe isn’t sure what good it does to keep Glennon on the bench. The future is not McCown and every snap Glennon takes, that is not just more experience for him to gain to get a head start on next year, but also gives coaches yet another opportunity to judge if he really is the quarterback of the future.
Unless the Bucs already have decided next season’s starting quarterback is not currently on the roster.

Continue to hide Glennon on the bench. Playing him only serves two objectives – they may actually win and lose the first round draft pick (not a good idea) or he gets hurt and loses any trade value. Either way, the season has already been flushed. Don’t flush away the possible future benefits of another losing season because someone wants to make Glennon feel better about his future in Tampa. Seems to be a good kid in a suck situation, but it’s not about him.

Not sure why Joe would want Glennon to start! He is a statue so the sack totals would probably double. He sucks and can’t hit the broad side of a barn with his deep balls so the deep threat would be gone. He has soundly proven that he is nothing more than a career back up. Last but not least He lost Lovie’s trust when he personally announced his benching on a local radio show on a Tuesday! This last point may be the biggest reason. He is gone Joe so while Lovie knows he has little trade value he doesn’t want to risk injury. While he probably won’t fetch better than a 5th round pick, that is better than just cutting him.

This is pretty simple. Lovie is a coward and rather than hold himself accountable for his countless bone-headed decisions, rather than accept the OBVIOUS TRUTH (McCown – as much as I like the guy – McCown SUCKS, DUH!) and make the ONLY decision a thinkin man can make and play Glennon for better or worse, he continues to stubbornly stick with ‘his guy.’ Just like he will continue to do so always and forever to the continued detriment of his-OUR team and franchise. Lovie has proven he is incapable of rational thought. He’s just a mindless dufus hopelessly clinging to what is simultaneously his dream and our nightmare, stealing Glazer coin until someone can wake up and end it.
I didn’t start thinking it until last week – I HATE losing and I’m sick and tired of it, but we should all be on board now with the REALITY of our situation. The ONLY thing left for us to win this season, the only accomplishment that remotely has any consequence is for us to “win” the #1 pick. Playing McCown does at least fit into that directive…

This is the first assumption, we knew Lovie would not go back to Glennon and why should he?
His stock is up as high as it could be
He brought his qb here to start
Glennon did nothing to prove he should be the starter
He can be a trade asset for the draft
He doesn’t represent a upgrade from McCown
Long story short here is there is no reason to start Glennon and the only focus of the team and fans should be securing the first pick.
Any pointless wins would damage the attraction of a legit OC knowing he can choose his own qb.

We might as well start Michael Koenen at QB. Or Michael Johnson or Anthony Collins. They sure as hell can’t play their own positions and the more we get blown out to end the year, the A. closer we come to the #1 pick, and B. closer we get to Lovie getting his @ss fired. Like I said hawk, no better than a a 5th round pick if a team is looking for a back up. That is better than nothing though. McCown isn’t very good but he is better than Glennon. I want Kafka to start. If this team screws this up and we win a game and drop to the 6th or 7th pick I am going to lose my mind. Having said that, I have a feeling we will do precisely that. As a lifelong fan and never having a franchise QB I have sickening feeling that they are going to screw everything up this weekend against the Panthers.

I like mike glennon. the offensive line is the crummiest in the NFL. they can’t protect anyone. mccown is supposed to be mobile. why waste glennon’s talent and get him hurt. the season has been over for several weeks. mike glennon is the future of this team. lovernious smith and his staff are not. the next coach will want to utilize mike glennon’s talent.

Having gone through OTAs, training camp, preseason games and 13 games of the regular season, plus months of practices, I believe that the coaching staff knows who can play and who can’t. These last three games have little value. (Remember how excited we were a year ago at William Gholston’s emergence as a pass rusher? He was going to be “the man” this year at DE. Not.)
Every year we bemoan lack of depth, a synonym for “we don’t have enough good players and some of our starters should be backups.”

Welcome to Lovieball. This will happen again next year even if Mariota is taken #1. Lovie’s wood for vets, it’s difficult to explain. He’d rather die with vets than risk it with young guys. There’s no world in which Josh McCown gives us a betetr chance to win. Mike Glennon has had us ahead in the 4th quarter in 4 of his 5 starts. Josh McCown has done it 3 times out of 8, and as is continuously pointed out, Glennon has more TDs than INTs unlike McCown
This is really sad to think, but it’s true: when Lovie says he thinks Josh McCown is better and gives us a better chance to win, he legitimately believes it. Amazingly scary thought going forward that our coach believes what the eye test clearly shows is not true.

Mike Glennon would give everything he got out there to try and impress the coaches. That might lead to a win and we can’t have that.

The only skill Glennon needs to be practicing is his Radio Skills. He will be out of the league in 3 years and joining his crybaby brother. he does not have the skills, passion or leadership ability to be a good backup much less a starter. I’d like to see a race between Eric Legrande in his wheel chair and Gleenon with a 20 yard head start. My money would be on Eric based on his heart and determination. Glennon has no heart.

Lovie Smith’s QB evaluation skills, or lack thereof, shouldn’t mean anything around the league (and they likely don’t). This is a guy who stuck with Rex Grossman for HOW long? End of story.

People talking about his trade value are, to put it lightly, not very bright. You think he can hurt it by playing? As has already been mentioned, getting bench for Josh McCown crushed his trade value. And you all think he’s a pure backup, and that a pure backup actually has trade value? In what world? Playing cannot hurt his value in anyway, and he ends the season with 3 wins and throws 8 TDs and 1 INT, that can only drive it up. It can’t go down anymore, Lovie has already devalued him to nothing.
This will end the same as Revis. The smarter teams (i.e almost everyone else in the league) will be patient, the Bucs are likely to cut Glennon and keep McCown, and they can have him for free. Just because our coach and management are horrible doesn’t mean other teams are the same. Pretty much every GM/coach tandem is better than ours.

Lovie Smith signing Mccown and handing him the starting job is more an indictment of the head coach than the other QB (Glennon). As for trading him, Gabbert fetched a 6th for the Jags so the Bucs would likely get the same, if they go that route.

I half-jokingly said in the offseason that Lovie signed the wrong ex-Bears QB, and that Orton would’ve been a better choice than Mccown. Neither is anything special but Kyle’s been serviceable up in Buffalo, which is better than what we’ve had down here. Oh well.

When evaluating a player, teams don’t just say “Well x coach benched y player for z player, so y player therefore sucks because z is awful” . They actually put on the tape. I mean, hey, the Bucs have cut/traded a bunch of guys and since we’ve been a wretched team for years, that must mean said players suck, right? All those players scattered around the league that played for the Bucs and are succeeding say otherwise.

Lovie has sold low before- remember he once traded Greg Olsen (TE) to Carolina and only got a 4th rounder in return…not sure who ultimately had final say in that up in Chicago but he’s the common denominator. If I played poker, I’d want to play against Lovie.

No one is gonna say “Well Mike got thrown into his second dumpster fire in a row, let’s hold anything he does against him”. He cannot hurt his “trade value” at all, it’s an utterly stupid argument. All he can do is enhance it by playing well. But no one is going to look at these 3 games and say “Well we would have paid a 4th rounder but after 3 games in a dumpster fire season, under the worst QB evaluator in the league, with a destroyed offesnive line, well, now he’s only worth a 7th”.
Teams that may want him have already decided on his value. But if he goes out and plays well the last three weeks, that can only drive the value up or make more teams interested. Playing him hurts the potential draft pick, which of course is a loser mentality. We can’t afford to be putting the worst option out there…except Lovie think’s he’s the best option. As he will choose McCown over a rookie. Dark days ahead under Lovie.

yep, this may be a tryout for McCown. They may also know that Norla wants Glennon, and don’t want to damage the merchandise (or devalue it).
But most likely Lovie never thought much of Glennon, Tedford was the one who thought he had potential, and Lovie can’t stand the way Mikey plays and wants no more of it.

glennon is a better passer than mccown but he’s still garbage and we sucked when he played just for different reasons and despite popular opinion it wasn’t because everyone sucked around him because hello everyone sucks around both qb’s. he sucked because he’s so damn scary and scared to make a play, scared to throw downfield which I understand because he’s so freaking inaccurate and I really get tired of seeing people say he has a cannon when every week both our deep threats have to slow down and run back and fall down to catch his passes

If Lovie Smith wants to win another game then Glennon is the best option to accomplish that. He’s better than McCown. If Lovie wants to tank the season (and I’m certain he doesn’t) then starting McCown is the way to go. Whatever any of you feel about Glennon none of you believe he’s worse than McCown.

My favorite player pic leading off an article is the one of Glennon and Jackson after the Pittsburgh win. Just the look on both players faces tells the whole QB story. Lovie didn’t give Glennon a fair chance. Glennon wasn’t doing well, but he wasn’t god awful like McCown. This isn’t about which quarterback gives us the “best chance to win” anymore. We’re f$&@&ng 2-11. You play the young QB who still has the potential to be better; not some 35 year old who’s proven he’s sucked for 12 seasons now! Evaluate Glennon!

Not that facts should be used in a debate, but according to ‘Advanced Football Analytics’, McCown’s deep ball completion percentage is 23.6% and Glennon’s is 33%.
It’s OK to say that Glennon is worse than McCown, at something, but you need to pick something where he truly is worse.

So, now that the facts don’t jibe with your assertions, you want to change the argument? Was Glennon given a “fair” opportunity? There are NO facts to back up either side of this debate. I will say that for a ROOKIE being thrown into a crazy situation, last year, he did, IMO, very well. This year hasn’t been any more “fair” to him (or McCown). Neither year did he go through camp as ‘The Starter’. He was not drafted as a ‘First-Round, Can’t Miss, Franchise QB’. He was a third round pick, a ‘project’. He has started (barely) ONE season’s worth of games, and you expect him to already be Manning, Brady, Ryan? Check their stats from their first 16 games(as a starter) and tell me that Glennon’s stats don’t give him more opportunities to grow, just like they got. With the expectations on those other QBs, they should have come out of the womb throwing TDs and winning Super Bowls each year compared to Glennon.
As I said, this part of the debate cannot be won/lost. This is my view. I’m as sure that I can’t change your mind as I am that you can’t change mine.
Somewhere down the road we’ll agree on something and all will be right with the world.
BTW, as my father used to say, “The only ‘fair’ is for two weeks in January and even the parking will cost you something.”

Just watch the games. Whenever Glennon tried to throw a pass over 20 yards it was way off target. The majority were just uncarchable, but if they were caught the receiver had to make an adjustment and go after the ball that was either off target or under thrown. McCown isn’t much better, but he tends to hit guys in stride more often. Both of the stats thrown out there are bad, but you have to remember that there are other players catching the ball and they have an impact on that completion percentage.
