Jameis Watch: Pocket Passer Revival
December 4th, 2014Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, national champion James Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon and Josh McCown.
It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback to wear No. 5 ever in the state of Florida.
Great old school Peter King writing in a piece he penned about drafting quarterbacks for theMMQB.com yesterday.
King explored the trend of a league a little down on mobile QBs. He checked in with various sources, including former Bucs rockstar general manager Mark Dominik and the godfather of all things NFL Draft, Gil Brandt.
“Let me tell you this,’’ Gil Brandt, the draft guru of draft gurus, said Tuesday night. “I think we’re slowly, slowly going back to the age of pocket quarterbacks.”
That factors in to this story. More and more general managers I speak with are hesitant about putting their quarterback at the kind of risk so many mobile quarterbacks are in these days. Look at the young, athletic playoff quarterbacks last year. Colin Kaepernick, declining. Cam Newton, declining. Russell Wilson, treading water. Andrew Luck is athletic but also effectively functions in the pocket; he’s certainly a rising star. But there’s been a hey-wait-a-minute moment when it comes to mobile quarterback as the wave of the future. And it’s because, obviously, mobile quarterbacks are getting the tar beaten out of them in the NFL today.
There’s much more to King’s piece, but the point here is that young Jameis Winston is a pocket passer playing in a pro-style offense. And he also can move.
Also interesting from King is his speculation that Colin Kaepernick and Cam Newton could be available on the market this offseason. Boy, that could lead to some wild action on Day 1 of the draft.

No JM please.
December 4th, 2014 at 5:26 pm
Randy Gregory or Leonard Williams, your likely 2015 Tampa Bay Bucs 1st round pick (assuming they stay in the top 5).
December 4th, 2014 at 5:40 pm
At approximately 7:15pm Eastern on Sunday, Dec 21st, 2014, the Buffalo @ Oakland contest will end and the Bucs will move up to the #1 Overall Pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.
December 4th, 2014 at 5:40 pm
I love young mobile QBs… they come equipped with their own built in check-down (their legs) that help them develop and win games until they adjust to the pro game.
December 4th, 2014 at 5:43 pm
Guilty?
December 4th, 2014 at 5:43 pm
RGIII can be yet another example… Many running QBs, when asked to rely more on their arm, seem to lose their edge and even do poorly…
Many of them don’t last long in the NFL taking all those hits… The Bucs need someone smart and accurate not fast!
December 4th, 2014 at 5:46 pm
We already have 1 QB who throws into coverage for INT’s, why do wee need to waste a first round pick on another.
If Winston thought he was seeing ghosts with Muschamp’s defense, wait till he gets into the NFL.
This guy is another Josh Freeman waiting to happen and he already has a head start on him as far as partying goes.
December 4th, 2014 at 6:15 pm
We all know lovie won’t pick a qb in the draft he stated Glennon was his qb of the future! Don’t get are hopes up joe! For mariota or Winston
December 4th, 2014 at 6:35 pm
Athletic/Mobil but functions in the pocket. The functions in the pocket part is what sooo many of these guys lack. S’why RGIII is on the bench & Luck excells.
December 4th, 2014 at 6:47 pm
Lol I can only assume you’re joking Todd. Lovie is very dishonest about anything related to his team and the roster. Case in point read his quote about Revis days before he traded him. Glennon is gone and I have a feeling even if Lovie didn’t want to the Glazers will force him to draft a QB one just to sell tix if nothing else. Glennon is on the bench during a lost season. That is your answer. They have seen enough and he is not in their future plans.
December 4th, 2014 at 6:56 pm
How many times can this be spun? Everyday? Brutal same comments every time outside of FSU fans no one it seems wants him. I can’t think the hits (which are dwindling on this subject) are worth posting anymore. Please Joe stop the kid is not very good. He’s won this year on the running game, somewhat good defense and a mediocre opposition. 7 recorded picks combined against Florida and Louisville, not NFL quality players at least at this stage.
December 4th, 2014 at 7:34 pm
Bucfan4life…They have seen enough, you say. No, what has been seen enough of is McCown, not saying he could’nt lead the team to a win in Detroit. If Lovie does’nt know offense and QB’s, which has been argued, then how could he know if Glennon is the QB of the future. Glennon has more value than is being realized. McCown is like a little bulldog, let him and his 5 mil toughness take the ridicule of the O line. Save Glennon until after the upgrades.
December 4th, 2014 at 7:46 pm
Lol. Glennon sucks and if we know it so does Lovie. McCown will be here next year to help groom the QB we draft. Glennon will be traded for a 5th or 6th round pick for a team looking for a back up!
December 4th, 2014 at 7:47 pm
Mariota please. Winston has little experience. What 26 college games. He needs to stay another year and see if he can find some accuracy.
December 4th, 2014 at 7:52 pm
Believe or not I think Glennon is firmly planted on Lovie’s hot seat for announcing that he was being benched before Lovie had a chance to say it. That on top of Glennon’s brother slamming him on social media put the proverbial nail in poor ole Mike Glennon’s coffin.
December 4th, 2014 at 7:56 pm
POLL PLEASE!!!
December 4th, 2014 at 8:01 pm
Who is to say lovie just signs hoyer and drafts a left tackle in round one don’t assume he is going to pick mariota or Winston.
December 4th, 2014 at 8:02 pm
Hopefully Glennon goes somewhere he has professional coaches unlike the jokes we have for us. Hopefully McCown is gone as well.
December 4th, 2014 at 8:03 pm
TBBF, how about a poll to see if Glennon should be starting?
We all know that a poll to see if we should draft Winston would
Probably overwhelmingly be in favor of drafting anyone other than
Winston, including Jeff Driskel.
(Just kidding about Driskel).
December 4th, 2014 at 8:03 pm
I’m hope we sign hoyer! Forget mccown or Glennon get mariota and hoyer please lovie
December 4th, 2014 at 8:03 pm
^i completely agree. For whatever reason Lovie seems compelled to lie about who will and who won’t start each week (as if any team would be concerned either one off these two starting at QB). I am sure he was beyond livid when opie went on a local radio show and made the announcement early in the week. Lovie NEVER would have made this announcement until the last minute. I completely agree that this was the nail in the coffin and proved that he couldn’t trust Glennon. Lovie can’t entrust the keys to the future Ina QB he can’t trust! He will never see the field again in tampa unless McCown is injured mid game in the next 4 games.
December 4th, 2014 at 8:04 pm
I’d rather take Newton than Hoyer. Cam is hurt and has been all season. He has no receivers besides Benjamin. A healthy Newton is much better than Hoyer, but I don’t think they let him go.
December 4th, 2014 at 8:18 pm
No clue lovie scares me will he draft mariota or Winston I don’t know ? Will the glazers step in and say pick a qb ? Idk ?
December 4th, 2014 at 8:33 pm
I read the link with the court transcript that you provided about jameis testimony under morning cup of joe. it definitely changed my opinion in a positive way in favor of jameis as a potential draft pick. but, given a choice of cam newton as a draft day trade or jameis I would go with cam. I know what cam can do.
December 4th, 2014 at 8:33 pm
Like I said before….
I’m seriously pulling for Mark Sanchez
Because if Philly wins the NFC East….. and at least ONE playoff game.
Nick Foles will become trade bait
We could send Chip Kelly our 1st pick. Of course he would draft Mariota
In exchange we’ll get Nick Foles-their 2015 1st, 2nd round picks & future compensation
December 4th, 2014 at 8:44 pm
Winston is in trouble for releasing the document as well.
December 4th, 2014 at 8:53 pm
I say trouble….i should say probably in trouble. Also, his story doesn’t even involve the recording. Also, it reads like a lawyer wrote it. Surprise surprise.
December 4th, 2014 at 9:15 pm
Seems like the Noles have won IN SPITE of Winston instead of BECAUSE of him.
He has looked an awful lot like Josh Freeman this season. Appearance and performance. I have been do Winston up to this point, but I think I am switching to Mariota first, then Winston.
December 4th, 2014 at 9:17 pm
Hmm..
December 4th, 2014 at 9:18 pm
Make chip kelly pay big! Foles and 1st this year and next year plus a 3rd round pick! Then chip gets mariota!
December 4th, 2014 at 9:26 pm
I’ll always remember sapp saying that he dreams of the day that an NFL qb would run an option. Told the report they were crazy for even thinking about. Said this is the nfl not college if you want to get your qb destroyed then have’em run the option. This was maybe 10+ years ago.
December 4th, 2014 at 9:27 pm
If anyone wants Mariota that bad they’ll trade with the Raiders unless they take Cooper or Gregory.
December 4th, 2014 at 9:50 pm
you glennon people just need to give up. your boy is done!!!! he won’t even be in the league in three years. He can’t read defenses, he can’t get out of his own way and most importantly he is NOT a WINNER…. How many games has he won??? Oh I see he needs an All Pro at every single position or the worlds against him and its unfair. All the BS excuses and creative math to justify that loser is enough. Stop it and move on. And those of you who think he has value 6 or 7th round pick MAX if you call that value please raise your standards. Nothing personal probably a nice guy but he SUCKS!!!!
December 4th, 2014 at 10:00 pm
Raiders need cooper need help for Carr

Ummmmm check how many comments we’re made on the last 4-5 articles Joe put up today before this Jameis Watch.
8 comments, 17 comments, etc.
This one has 32 so far.

December 4th, 2014 at 10:35 pm
I agree mariota makes things happen! Winston gets tons of help
December 4th, 2014 at 10:39 pm
Todd ….tons of help from whom? He has 1 WR and 1 TE. Everyone else are freshmen. He’s been running for his life all season, so no o-line help.
5-6 of his INT’s were from tipped passes off his WR’s hands btw.
December 4th, 2014 at 10:53 pm
“going back” to the age of pocket passers? It never ended. Look at the Super Bowl winners for the last 15 or so years:
Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, Aaron Rodgers, Eli Manning, Joe Flacco, Brad Johnson, Trent Dilfer, Kurt Warner.
Mobile quarterbacks are fun to watch, but they don’t win Super Bowls.
Wilson is the exception, not the rule. And of all the young quarterbacks in the league, there isn’t one I’d take over Andrew Luck.
December 4th, 2014 at 11:19 pm
Hey Joe’s-
Take a walk on the wild side.
How about a Glennon poll?
Should start or shouldn’t.
December 4th, 2014 at 11:20 pm
It’s as simple as that!
December 4th, 2014 at 11:44 pm
Mariota is the beat QB in this draft right now.
December 5th, 2014 at 12:00 am
Winston looks like freeman 2.0 go mariota
December 5th, 2014 at 12:22 am
Jamarcus Russell
Geno Smith
Vince Young
Cam Newton
Josh Freeman
RGme
EJ Manuel
Akili Smith
(Insert Next Buc QB)
Take your running QB and shove it up your A$$.
We need a pocket passing veteran
December 5th, 2014 at 12:32 am
Just look to a former Buc. Super Bowl Winner Doug Williams.
He was a pocket passer with Washington and won a superbowl.
In 3 years at Washington he rushed for 5 total yards.
Bring in a Veteran to lead this team.
December 5th, 2014 at 12:39 am
Jamarcus Russell
Geno Smith
EJ Manuel
Akili Smith
Equals pocket passers….EJ Manuel is a running QB? Akili Smith? WTF?
December 5th, 2014 at 12:40 am
“Bring in a Veteran to lead this team.”
How about Josh McCown? He’s a veteran pocket passer…
December 5th, 2014 at 12:41 am
It may seem far fetched, but I’m predicting right now that Chip Kelly and the Eagles will make a major power play to try to move way up and pick Mariotta. Don’t be shocked
December 5th, 2014 at 12:47 am
Jay cutler and Bears 1st and 2nd rounder to bucs for mccown and are 1st round pick
December 5th, 2014 at 1:00 am
@Todd…are you insane? So we give up the number 2 pick in the draft, Josh McCown for Jay Cutler, the number 18 or so pick and a 2nd rounder?
Insanity.
December 5th, 2014 at 1:40 am
No I don’t want to but lovie might do that!
December 5th, 2014 at 1:43 am
How do the Eagles trade up way down there ?
December 5th, 2014 at 3:07 am
I stopped reading at “Russell Wilson – treading water”
LOL what a joke.
December 5th, 2014 at 3:59 am
Mariota is the next wilson but better
December 5th, 2014 at 10:58 am
if you’re a team pushing for the playoffs and beyond (which i hope the bucs become again someday), you are FAR better served by having an above average QB who almost never misses a game than a transcendent talent who is out or playing hurt an average of 6 to 8 games a year. no consistency = no contention
December 5th, 2014 at 11:53 am
The only way we don’t get Mariota is if some team trades up with the Raiders and takes him. There quite a few teams out there that could do that knowing we need a QB. Then again the idiots that run this franchise could trade our pick away and we have a 4-12 or 2-14 season again. YAY!
