Bears Say McCown Made Life Easier

November 24th, 2014

mccownlovie1Forget about the Division III ball security displayed by re-starting quarterback Josh McCown, his mere presence on the field was a bonus for the Bears yesterday.

Chicago safety Chris Conte explained.

“Josh was the guy we were playing against every day in practice before so if you’re not really thinking about it,” Conte told the Chicago Tribune. “It’s like you’ve seen him so many times you have a feel for him, you know?”

Conte said he believed familiarity with McCown helped the Bears defense. It felt more like a Wednesday than a Sunday.

Conte had an impressive interception of McCown, who had a defender in his face on the throw, courtesy of right guard Patrick Omameh. Conte had a great read on McCown to get his fingers on the ball, though it wasn’t the smartest decision to even throw it.

Of course, this drives Joe back to the silliness of having McCown on the field at all in a lost season. Play young Mike Glennon and let him develop as a backup, or as a potential trade commodity. It’s not a tough concept, not when 35-year-old McCown is 1-5 as a starter, and has thrown more interceptions and fewer touchdowns than Glennon.

Until the Bucs draft or trade for an NFL caliber QB, this will be the outcome week in and week out. It’s as simple as that. After the first 5 minutes of the second half I knew the outcome was sealed and went to bed for a well deserved nap… woke up and bingo, I was correct. When 59 went out with a boo boo, and Fletcher came in the defense went down hill quickly. This team is water thin. The starters aren’t worth much, but the backups are useless. It will take years to rebuild this mess. It may not be possible actually.

  2. Chef Paul for Brandon Scherff Says:

McCown sucks!! I’m all in on drafting Winston. We just cant go on like this any longer. Make it happen Lovie!! I know Glennon aint much better, but he is still better. Plus, I can’t believe Glennon gets a bunch of slack for looking goofy when McCown has the gull to walk around with that stupid hair cut.

  3. bucrightoff Says:

Lovie needs to go back to Glennon just to earn a little credibility back from the fanbase and to perhaps show us he’s a little different.

  4. meh Says:

Mariota please. Both our QBs are terrible.

  5. Fort Myers Dave Says:

Man we need a new qb, no one can argue with that! But Buc fans we also need help in the trenches; this OL sux bad! So the question is which comes first: the chicken or the egg; the franchise qb or the starting OTs that will be BNucs for a decade???? Tampa will only get one with its top 5 pick in next spring’s draft unless they trade down for additional picks…. No way the Bucs sign any decent OL help via the free agency route; look at the disaster that occured this past off season where the OL is actually worse then the one anchored by Zuttah, Joseph, Penn and Larsen who all now start for other teams and would be better than the crap the Bucs currently have in the trenches. YTeah we need a qb, but that franchise qb needs to have help in the OL which is currently not here. If the Bucs go all in on Winston or Mariota that kid could get crucified on the field like Bortles or Carr are this years for the Jags and Raiders who coincidentally are the only teams worse then the Bucs, jets and Titans who all will be qb shopping this next offseason!

  6. Simpleasthat Says:

McClown definetly lived up to his name yesterday.

There are so many holes too fill its scary. I don’t know if even Billicheat could turn this mess around.

    McCown is McGarbage…..

Who thought this guy was gonna win football games?

Oh yes, that would be head coach Lovie Smith!

  9. BucBob1 Says:

I still would take McCown over Glennon anyday.

  10. RastaMon Says:

Ideally the Bucs can find a trading partner in the 1 st round…trade down…QB…OT…OG…Center …with by the end of the 3rd round

  11. SteveK Says:

    Glennon > McCown

  12. OB Says:

Since we win every five games, we have three more losses before a win. Lovie proved yesterday why he should not be a head coach. It was painfully obvious the McCown lost his touch in the second quarter with throws no where near his receiver, and he left him in the second half and we lost on two plays. I will say this the first interception was like a punt and we lost nothing and the last take away prevented us from scoring, if McCown didn’t couch it up again, and the two in the third quarter by Josh killed us.

Our mostly veteran line needs to be retired and put out to pasture they are clearly over the hill. So one is really in charge of this team and they better jettison the cancer that is killing this team before it is too late for next year.

  13. Thomas2.2 Says:

Glennon & McCown are both backups at best. One is 24 with room to grow, the other is 34 with his growth stunted as a non-starter as determined by many other teams.

McCown was horrible yesterday and singularly handed the Bears the game. It’s easier to accept when a 24 y.o. Developing QB makes those mistakes as opposed to a 34 y.o. 5 time reject.

Why does anyone think McCown is better than the 5 other franchises determined? He went 3-2 last year and was fired by the Bears-you now see why.

Stop this stubbornly foolish McCown experiment.

  14. billy buckaroo Says:

    Picture this for yesterday:

    Tom Brady throwing to
    Mike Evans
    Vincent Jackson
    Louis Murphy
    ASJ
    Rainey/Sims/Martin

    Same results-doubtful

  15. Espo Says:

Tom Brady doesn’t play here, go whack off on another site.

Josh McCown makes life better for every defense.

Can we please stop with the McCown vs Glennon arguments? They’re both absolutely terrible. Glennon might actually fetch late round pick though. Less than the 3rd we used to grab him.

  16. passthebuc` Says:

Why would you play Glennon, we are making a run for the playoff’s (Sarcasm)

If you draft a QB and play him without a line, you are throwing away a draft pick. Of course we could do what Rock Star did and Have 2 first round picks and end up with Barron and an obscure running back.

Its a process, do it right. from the center out.

we do not need qb yet. its like going to the bank and borrowing operating capital and only having the janitor as an employee.

  17. Espo Says:

Actually on second thought, I hate Brady so yes for a second I will picture him being protected by Collins, Mankins, Smith, Omameh, and Dotson. Hehe happiness inside.

  18. Espo Says:

Pass the Buc you’re probably right but that capital is so tempting and there’s no telling if it’ll be there later

  19. bucrightoff Says:

We have used 2 first round picks this millenium on offensive line, or the same amount we’ve used on running backs. We’ve only use 3 firsts on OLine since 1990. This is why we are a very bad team. Should be spending 2 firsts on OLine every 5 years, not every 15. Most teams have spent more first on OLine in the last 7 years than we have the last 25.

Yeah, a shiny new QB would be nice, until we absolutely wreck him right away by offering him no chance to succeed. Build it up first, then find your QB.

  20. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

“Yeah, a shiny new QB would be nice, until we absolutely wreck him right away by offering him no chance to succeed. Build it up first, then find your QB.”

    @ Bucrightoff

Exactly! Look no further than two other dumpster dweller teams (Jaguars and Raiders) that supposedly drafted their franchise QB’s this past draft. Both teams have worse records than the Bucs and both QB’s while drafted higher than Glennon have not played as well as Glennon did in his first 13 games (statistically and W’s). As unpopular as it is the Bucs need some kind of O-line to protect a QB and open some holes for the run game so a young QB isn’t forced to throw 40 times (and make inevitable rookie mistakes like our 12th year journeyman hand picked vet QB is doing in most of his starts)

  21. riggs685 Says:

No QB could have been effective with that protection… You can’t put that on QB. I’ve been a Bears fan long enough to know that. I’d like to welcome Bucs fans to o-line under Lovie. Call for whoever you want to start… Draft whatever QB you want. It’s not going to matter without an o-line.

  22. riggs685 Says:

bucrightoff, go take a look at how Lovie’s first round o-line selections worked out with the Bears, lol. Next year after Lovie was gone, picked up two starts in the 1st and 6th, one of which was pro-bowl rookie. An o-line than McCown thrived behind.

  23. bucrightoff Says:

Hey trust me I’d prefer Lovie have no say whatsoever in personnel, his track record in Chicago and FAs this offseason show he’s horribly incompetent at talent evaluation. Look at Tim Wright, better stats than ASJ playing 60% fewer snaps. The less Lovie is involved in talent evaluation (and offense), the better we’ll all be.

  24. Brandon Says:

I think the Bucs were trying to hold onto what little trade value Glennon had. The more he played, the more his stock plummeted. He had his shot, he’s definitely not the guy. McCown has been very up and down, but he does give the team the best chance to win.

I agree 100%, perhaps the Bucs can accomplish what the Lambs did in 2012 with the 2nd overall and trade RG3 for the 6th overall and a slew of picks from the Deadskins and then move that 6th overall to Dallas for a later 1st rounder and some more early action in the draft. That could possibly give Tampa a chance to fill the talent void it currently has……..

    please, just stop.

McCown has been very up and down, but he does give the team the best chance to win.

Haven’t you been paying attention? Since we’re not going to the playoffs, the “fans” would rather get a higher draft pick. Wins mean nothing anymore.

  27. Zam Says:

Glennon’s done, he stinks. So does McCown for different reasons, but at least he can deliver the ball to Mike Evans. That’s more important to develop.

What I’d rather see is signing a whole bunch of O-line off the street and trying to find a diamond in the rough. It couldn’t be much worse than what we have.

  28. Buccfan37 Says:

Starting McCown at Chicago was a mistake, yeah because of that teams knowledge of McCown. MG should have played at least in the second half, the Bucs would have two wins in a row now. Glennon is the better QB, hands down no comparison, his shortcomings don’t reach the level of Lovie’s designated starter. Lovie is clueless on offense and stubborn as a goat in bad decision making. I guess McCown’s tears have turned to dust, what’s left to say? The final verdict on MG’s capabilities is not complete, no matter what any of you say. He need’s to play out the season. Any other direction is just unwatchable, imo.

  29. Tomcin Says:

Why in the world would the Bucs pick a TE in the 2nd RD when they needed so much help on the OL? Thats what you get from L & L with Dovie having the final say. So why would we think the 2015 draft will be any better? I know I’m in the minority but I would have given Schiano another year. As far as drafting a QB in the 1st RD. I wouldn’t do it, especially Winston or Mariota. Maybe a Qb in 2nd or 3rd depending who’s available.

  30. John McKillop Says:

Terrible o line play = terrible running game, which = terrible quarterback play! No matter who we put at quarterback behind this offensive line they won’t have an easy time. I still can’t believe anyone in our front office or coaching staff looked at collins and EDS and said i’m in love, all of our oline problems are solved. What a shame!

  31. Brandon Says:

Imagine a player that can make all the difficult throws McCown has made, and then some, plus have quite a bit more escapability than McCown, but not make nearly as many of the bone-headed mistakes. That’s Mariota or Winston…possibly even Hundley. We’ve now lost 7 of our 9 games in the 4th quarter, and 6 of our losses came down to the final possession. Don’t you think a stud QB could make a big difference and help this team NOT lose on the final possession? We’re talking about a player that would add 8-10 points a game to the offensive output…that would equal wins. We’d be 9-2 if we had a stud at QB. We’re losing by a little, a better player at the most important position would make a world of difference.

Yeah, I’ve been paying careful attention to everything Bucs related. I too want a higher draft pick and that was my greatest worry when Lovie decided to go back to McCown. He could’ve stuck with Glennon and we would’ve been guaranteed only 1 win, we go with McCown and suddenly plays happen (remember that first down to Vincent Jackson on 3rd and 23? How many QBs make that throw? Glennon couldn’t imagine making a difficult throw like that…or many others that McCown made.

As far as what the fans want (higher draft picks), wins are nice too, but Lovie’s job isn’t to secure the #1 overall pick, his job is to win the game… or did you forget Herm Edwards? “YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME!”

FYI: Through yesterday’s games, BOTH McCown and Glennon have EACH been sacked 16 times. So McCown’s supposed “escapability” has not been in evidence much.

    So far this year:
Glennon has rushed 10 times for 49 yards, for an average of 4.9 ypc.
McCown is obviously much better since he has rushed 16 times for 92 yards for an average of 5.7 ypc.(sarcasm). And when he loses the football while scrambling, whatever supposed advantage he gives, is completely lost.

Lastly, with JM12, the Bucs have scored 88 points in 5.5 games =16 ppg.
With MG8, the Bucs have scored 112 points in 5.5 games = 20.4 ppg.

    @ ticker

Shh…stop showing the Glennon haters the real facts, they’ll accuse you of only looking at stats instead of wins and losses. Oh wait, that’s right they each have one win. Sorry JM12 mob…the smart play at this point of the season (that is realistically a lost year) is to give Glennon more play experience so he can continue to hopefully improve for the Bucs

Glennon makes that pass easy. 20 yard out/corner route? All day

More importantly is how Murphy had the ball at the 22 and we ended up on the 50 3 plays later bc of penalties.

  37. buc4lyfe Says:

Who the hell plays a quarterback to let him develop as a backup quarterback. If you play Glennon he’s gonna continue to lose trade value as he already did during his time this year. It doesn’t matter who is at quarterback this team has never been this boring on offense
