Gruden Talks Gerald McCoy
November 14th, 2014There are Bucs fans frustrated enough to berate Gerald McCoy for his on-field play.
These angry types don’t like McCoy’s off-field chatter and let that cloud their judgment.
Reality, however, reveals McCoy has gotten little help from his defensive line mates the past couple of seasons. Heck, McCoy might even be longing for Daniel Te’O Nesheim about now. You remember him, a starting Bucs defensive end in 2012 and 2013, who is out of football.
McCoy plays a couple of levels above the next best Bucs defensive lineman and coaches around the league know it. McCoy pays for it in the trenches every game.
Here’s video of Redskins head coach Jay Gruden talking about McCoy this week:

ESPN has a story about McCoy asking Sapp for help with double teams.
November 14th, 2014 at 1:08 pm
“It used to frustrate me,’’ McCoy said Thursday. “But then I kind of realized that’s what comes with it. Ninety-nine told me, ‘It’s tough sledding down there. When you’re the guy, that’s what you’re going to get. Get used to it. Get over it.'”
That’s solid advice from a Hall of Famer. Like Sapp once was, McCoy is the best player on the Tampa Bay defensive line. The double teams aren’t going away. McCoy said he has to deal with the double teams and find ways to beat them.” -ESPN

So does TBO.com.
November 14th, 2014 at 1:20 pm
FYI, GMC has more sacks than Ndamukong Suh. GMC gets ZERO help. Suh plays on a significantly better defensive line.
November 14th, 2014 at 1:20 pm
Good stuff Skyline.
November 14th, 2014 at 1:22 pm
You never heard warren sapp complaining about double teams and mostly because his teammates stepped and made them party for it but hey I changed my tune from saying this d line lacks talent, they lack training and proper technique and rush moves. The d line is much different from the cornerback position because there’s zero talent. Banks is OK but tony dungy had nobody’s at corner that performed and made a name for themselves by working hard
November 14th, 2014 at 1:28 pm
Uh_oh – Gruden said they might have to change the snap count. what’s the over-under on how many offsides Gerald has this week?
November 14th, 2014 at 1:28 pm
@Joe, he has more sacks, but I’m sure will say he is better because he doesn’t help people up. haha
November 14th, 2014 at 1:29 pm
^^^will say Suh is better.
November 14th, 2014 at 1:29 pm
I get no help…….wa, wa….cry me a river.
tell that to julio jones, adrian peterson, megatron, brees, manning…..
if he’s so damn good it would not matter
November 14th, 2014 at 1:30 pm
I’m hoping for the Bucs sake and McCoys that he figures something out because we need to rush the QB.
November 14th, 2014 at 1:31 pm
Buc fans that whine & complain about GMC are simply disgrutled about losing and will blame anyone that is in the limelight.
GMC is a steady performer….and its about time others earn their paycheck like he does.
Are you listening…..Johnson, Collins, EDS, Goldson, Koenen…..et al..
November 14th, 2014 at 1:32 pm
Not sure anyone watched the game last night, but the Fins were getting some great pressure on Orton and he was just throwing it away everytime. Even the Bills sacked Tannie 5 times, but you could see late in the game when Orton was being pressured he couldn’t do anything. I felt like I was watching the Bucs play as the ball was snapped the QB was throwing the ball away because they were already in the backfield.
November 14th, 2014 at 1:35 pm
Back in the late 90’s, I clearly recall that the Dean of Tampa Sports Radio used to routinely insist that it was Brad Culpepper, not Sapp, who drew the double teams, which allowed Sapp to look so good and put up such great numbers. Maybe GMC should be calling Culpepper for help…
November 14th, 2014 at 1:36 pm
GMC is an absolute beast. The rest of this d line lacks talent. If you have a guy that is double and tripled teamed every play somebody should be able to beat an opponent one on one once in a while. That doesn’t happen here, Lovie and Licht have a lot of work to do to shore up this defensive line with more talent.
November 14th, 2014 at 1:37 pm
TBBF, how is Koenen still on the team? He is the 39th ranked punter with an avg of 39.7 yds a punt. His longest punt is only 56 yds. Why do we still carry him on the team. Bring in 6 punters on Monday and replace him by Tuesday.
November 14th, 2014 at 1:43 pm
Lovie.
November 14th, 2014 at 1:44 pm
hey joe,
if you posted a column completely blasting lovie. and I mean BLASTING him (there is not one coach on this team under him with any spunk and he has hired and acquired FA flunkies)…taking him apart.
or got real pointed with your question in press conferences and such.
would they kick you out. Just curious if you have to appease the team/keep the peace to a certain extent.
because no one has really taken this coaching staff to task as they should. bits and pieces here and there, but there could be a book on the incompetence at one buc place right now.
November 14th, 2014 at 1:53 pm
Come on man. He is not double and triple teamed every play. What game are you watching. Only the real play makers and great ones make $hit happen regardless. He is not worth the $. What the hell is Gruden supposed to say… Coaches always talk good about the other team when interviewed. And to say he is the best DL we got ain’t saying much. Watch the game Sunday and see how many times he’s double and triple teamed. Also watch how many times he loses his 1v1 battle.
November 14th, 2014 at 2:04 pm
Ray Ray,
McCoy is actually the 3rd ranked DT in sacks this year. Marcell Dareus is #1 with 10 sacks and 2nd is Tom Johnson with 5.5 sacks. McCoy has 5. So he is doing his job.
November 14th, 2014 at 2:24 pm
What about putting Mcdonald and Spence in the middle with McCoy and Johnson on the Edges. It would limit McCoy’s double teams. But he would need to get there real quick and nit get beat off the edge as far as running plays.
November 14th, 2014 at 2:40 pm
@ Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston
Surely you noticed I included Koenen in the group that needed to earn their paycheck!!!
Of course I agree….with no guarantees…he should have been gone with Barth to save some $$$ for players like GMC & LVD
November 14th, 2014 at 3:12 pm
@TBBF, That is why I brought him up. He should have been cut and not even on the team right now. I don’t think there is any chance for him to earn his paycheck at this point.
November 14th, 2014 at 3:15 pm
Koenen needs to refund several weeks of pay….and be gone!!!
November 14th, 2014 at 3:37 pm
@ Robert9 so you are trying to compare to McCoy to a bunch of OFFENSIVE players? Geeze, some bucs fans are just so ignorant…
November 14th, 2014 at 3:38 pm
In talking about the defensive line, is Michael Johnson even gonna be here next season? Talk about overpaid. This guy’s been so worthless, it’s almost worth taking the cap hit to get rid of him and get someone that has a bit of Want To in their play. This guy plain sucks, and there’s no way he’s taking advantage of the tie ups that McCoy is providing in the middle.
November 14th, 2014 at 4:09 pm
If you think bad of McCoy you are an idiot and should be banned from making comments on here as your level of intelligence is the size of a wad of toilet paper after wiping my ass.
You bunch of absolute stupid morons. Please stop breathing my air you stupid f****s
November 14th, 2014 at 4:18 pm
For what the Buc’s are paying McCoy, how much help should the guy need? He should be a dominant force. Oh that’s right, the Bucs organization sucks so much, they have to overpay people as an incentive.
November 14th, 2014 at 4:23 pm
JJ Watt still gets his, despite constant double and triple teams.
GMC is a really good player, not elite.
Where is the nasty?
November 14th, 2014 at 4:33 pm
Im not going to hate on McCoy. He is one of our two best players, LVD being the other. I just want to know how its possible for the rest of the line to be so invisible. McDonald is a worker but you can tell he isnt the talent that McCoy is. So Johnson, Spence and the rest of the gang seem to be taking the day off when the Bucs play, something or someone has to give.
And Robert9 — WTF????? Peterson????? Brees????? Are you kidding me?????
But then again, you do hang your hat on being the founder of the MGM. How is that working out for ya?
November 14th, 2014 at 9:47 pm
SteveK is another Glennon crush guy.
Guess these boys got love for the mediocre, and that’s it.
November 15th, 2014 at 4:54 am
Why do the majority of our players not find work after we cut them? Oh because we are consistently at the bottom of the barrel in the NFL. When we do have good players Bill Belicheck fleeces us for them. So frustrating to be a Bucs fan
November 15th, 2014 at 6:41 am
“These angry types don’t like McCoy’s off-field chatter and let that cloud their judgment.” – Joe
Those people are complete idiots. All of them. They want to blame anyone they can for the losing record, even one of the few bright spots.
buc4lyfe Says:
“You never heard warren Sapp complaining about double teams”
Talk about revisionist history. During the first half of his career, Warren Sapp did indeed complain about double teams. Its one of the reasons guys like Simeon Rice were brought in.
November 15th, 2014 at 6:45 am
Robert 9 Says
“I get no help…….wa, wa….cry me a river.”
Robert, Robert, Robert.
It’s important to note that Gerald is not the one saying this. So before you berate him for saying something, at least confirm who is actually saying it.
It is simply an observation made by those with a lick of intelligence. It is an obvious fact. Above your head perhaps, but a fact nevertheless.
November 15th, 2014 at 6:46 am
Joe, I SOooooo hate autoplay videos. Every time I comment I have to scroll to the top and stop the stupid thing.
